The Gospel According to John (January 24, 2014)

Chapter 1 – Verses # 1-3 The Purpose of this Gospel as set forth in the Prologue

(Definition of Prologue – the introduction of a statement or event that leads to the main point of a literary work or play)- To set forth Jesus Christ as the Son of God- The Gospel of Matthew sets forth Jesus in His Messianic Royalty: Mark’s Gospel as the Son of man and the Servant of God; Luke as the Son of man and the Savior of mankind- John’s Gospel exhibits Him in the glorious activity of His Divine Nature

The Subject of the Prologue- “The Word”- Jesus Christ is called “The Word” as He is the essential Revealer of the Divine Being- There is in the Divine Essence a principle by which God reveals Himself – “The Logos”; and a principle by which He communicates Himself – “The Spirit”(Definition of Principle – way of working: the way something or someone works)

- He is the “express image” of the Father’s person (Heb. 1:3) just as a word is an image or picture of a thought - He is also the “Interpreter” of the Divine Will (Jn. 1:18) – “The only begotten Son, hath declared the Father” 1. Through the Creation 2. Through the Prophets 3. Through the Incarnation

The Gospel According to John (January 24, 2014)

The Essential Nature of “The Word”

1. He is an absolute Eternal Being A. The “beginning” carries us back to the initial point of time – well beyond in the beginning God created the heavens and the earth B. The Word existed in the beginning – whenever that was – The word “was” indicates a continual state. The Word was therefore in existence before time and before creation. It was “before” all things. It was from all eternity. Jesus spoke of the glory He had with the Father, before the world was..(Jn. 17:5) C. There never therefore was a time, when Christ “was not” – “The words ‘beginning’ and ‘was’ are like two anchors, which the ship of a man’s soul may depend upon, whatever storms of life may come” (Basil)

2. He is a distinct person from God, yet one with Him A. “And the Word was with God” – “With” – not in the sense of co-existence, or location, proximity or communion, but of a mysterious relation with God. The preposition with implies that The Word was with God, before He revealed God B. The Life Eternal was not only “manifested to men”, but it was WITH THE FATHER (1John 1:2) – not with God as to emphasize the distinction of the Persons in the Godhead, not with men or angels, as they were yet to be created, but with the Father in eternal glory. It was to The Word that the Father said – “Let us make man in our image and our likeness.”

The Gospel According to John (1-31-14)

Chapter 1 – Verse # 4 “In Him was Life and the Life was the Light of men” “In him was life” –

1. He has the ability to “form or speak” matter into whatever state He desires and to give that matter “life” (#2222) Heb. (zÕe) That “matter” lives/exists by the Word of His Power i.e. He upholds all things by the Word of His Power.

2. His Life is a different kind of “Life” than that which He creates…His Life is best understood by the word “Light” #5457 (phÕs) which means to shine or make manifest by rays, luminousness, figuratively, “fire”

“and the Life was the Light of men”

1. The Life that gives life (ZÕE) to men, desires to give men His Life which is (PHÕS) so that He might dwell among them. PHÕS life and ZÕE life cannot exist together – they are different “types” of Life – PHÕS consumes ZÕE; therefore ZÕE must be changed into PHÕS, so that the two may dwell together. PHÕS may put on the ZÕE life, but ZÕE may not put on PHÕS life – PHÕS must change ZÕE life into PHOS life, which is accomplished by activating a chemical in ZÕE which allows a metamorphosis to take place, thereby transforming ZÕE into PHÕS.

3

Page 5: The Gospel According to John

The Gospel According to John (1-31-14)

2. PHÕS is to “become” the LIGHT of men through the resurrection of Jesus Christ who was:

“The First-Begotten from the dead” – (Hebrews 1:6)“The Firstborn (from the dead) of the church (His ruling body consisting of all races, kindred, tongues, people & nations – (Rev. 5-9)“The Firstborn (from the dead) among many brethren (Israel) – (Rom. 8:29)“ The Firstborn (from the dead) of every creature (all creation) – (Col.1:15)

3. Jesus Christ is the firstborn from the dead of a new creation which God ordained before the foundation of the world – Never before in ALL OF HIS CREATION had the Father and the Son, embarked on a plan to bring the CREATION through the experience of sin and death, that the creation might see the wisdom of God’s perfect law, having experienced the pain and suffering that result from disobedience, and that they might learn that the Law was given in LOVE by a faithful CREATOR Who would demonstrate His LOVE FOR all of His creation by allowing His only begotten son– Who never disobeyed, nor would He, because Had not the seed of sin in Him – to GIVE His life as a ransom for ALL. Once the penalty was paid, God could not allow death to hold the Righteous, and He “brought again from the dead” the Lord Jesus Christ, Who was raised a SPIRITUAL Body and Who thus became a “LIFE GIVING SPIRIT” – WHO will give this PHÕS life to all of His creation

4

Page 6: The Gospel According to John

The Gospel According to John (1-31-14)

Who has the authority to give His Life (PHÕS) to whoever He determines is WORTHY of it. WORTHINESS is determined by the recipients willingness to “REPENT” of His disobedient ways, “BELIEVE” into the LORD JESUS CHRIST – that He was delivered for their offences and was raised for their justification – be “TRIED AND TESTED” and be “BAPTIZED” by the HOLY SPIRIT AND FIRE and be conformed to the “IMAGE” of God’s dear Son. Having met these qualifications he or she will be added to the Lambs Book of Life and admitted to that city of cities, the NEW JERUSALEM – “whose gates are never shut at all by day: for there shall be no night (darkness) there. And they shall bring the glory and the honor of the nations into it. And there shall in no wise enter into it anything that defileth, neither whosoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s Book of Life.” (Rev. 21:25-27)4. Jesus Christ as the King of Kings and Lord of Lord’s will continue working through His Church (His Body) His Nation (Israel) to bring all nations (all creation) unto PHÕS life. Once this has been accomplished “GOD WILL HAVE BECOME ALL IN ALL”at which time the Son (The Lord Jesus Christ) will turn the entire (WORLD WIDE KINGDOM) over to the FATHER, who will then have not only a “model” universe from which to order all creation, but will have a vast number of servants – WHO ARE INCAPABLE OF SIN or DISOBEDIENCE because they possess the PHÕS LIFE – THEY ARE SONS OF GOD BY THE RESURRECTION OF JESUS CHRIST – HIS SONS SHALL BE “LIGHT” IN WHOM THERE IS NO DARKNESS (John 1:5)

Verse # 5 “And the Light shineth in the darkness and the darkness comprehended it not”

Comprehended – Gr. #2638 (Kat-al-am-ban’-o) from Gr. #2596 (kata) –meaning “down” and Gr. #2983 (lam-ban’-o) a primary verb meaning to take, get hold of)Definition: – to bring down, take down, or get hold of with the intent to bring or take down.

“And the Light shines in the darkness and the darkness is unable to “bring down or take down” the Light.”

Matthew 16: 13-18 – “And I say unto thee, That thou art Peter (pet-ros’ – a fragment of rock) and upon this rock (the understanding of Who Jesus is – the Christ, the son of the living God) I will build my church and the gates of “hell” – Gr. #86 (hah’-dace) – meaning the grave (darkness i.e. death) – shall not prevail against it.

Darkness – Heb. #2822 (kho-shek’) meaning – darkness, misery, destruction, death, ignorance, sorrow or wickedness

Verses # 6-9 “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light”

- A man sent from God – John was sent (as a prophet) to bear witness of the Light. He preached “repentance” as did the prophets of old (Isaiah, Jeremiah, Ezekiel, etc.) but he was also “the revealer” of the Logos – that WORD which was made flesh and dwelt among us.

- He came, and by penetrating insight and burning word, by flashes of moral revelation and intense earnestness “bare witness concerning the Light”

- His goal was to prevent the forces of darkness from “bringing down” the Light. He came to sting the apathy and to disturb the self complacency of the darkness

- He came to provoke the darkness by revealing the fact that Light was continually shining “it could not be dismissed nor would it” as did all the prophets before him

- He came to call conscience from it’s death sleep, to draw distinctions between moral and ceremonial obedience, to exalt obedience above sacrifice and works fit for repentance above Abrahamic privilege; to warn by lurid threatening's the fiery wrathand a terrible curse which would fall on a disobedient but consecrated people

7

Verses # 6-9 “There was a man sent from God, whose name was John. The same came for a witness, to bear witness of the Light, that all men through him might believe. He was not that Light, but was sent to bear witness of that Light” - He was the last of a good fellowship of prophets who bore witness to the Light of Life which had it’s being in the eternal Logos of God - He came as they had all come, with a view of producing far greater results, than as a matter of fact, they have actually achieved. - He came to bear such testimony that all through him, i.e. by the force of his appeal or by the fierce glow thus cast upon the perils and follies of the hour, might believe – might realize the full significance of the Light which hitherto they had refused to accept.

- The splendid ministry of the “burning and shining lamp” might have led all Israel to repentance; however, in the plan of God it was not to be – for He (that is Jesus) “came to earth to die” – “He Who knew no sin, was made sin for us, that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him” (Romans 6:25); however, through His death, Light and Life will forever reign – “for the Light shineth in the darkness and the darkness comprehended it not” (See. Revelation 21:4-5)

Father – full of grace and truth.”

Evangelize: John said something…..He pointed out who Jesus was, and not only who he was, but was he was going to do – The Lamb of God, that taketh away, the sin of the world.

Vs. 40-43 “Of a truth, this is The Prophet” (Deut. 18:15) “Shall Christ come out of Galilee?” (Micah 5:2) Read Matthew 2: 1-23

32

Page 34: The Gospel According to John

The Gospel According to John (8-6-14)John 8:1-15

Vs. 1-4 “ Brought unto Him a woman, taken in adultery” – the very act….. (See John 4: 15-18, and Hebrews 13:8) – Jesus Christ the same – “yesterday, today and forever.”

Point 1 – Were the scribes and Pharisees the witnesses or the accusers? Did they “witness” the act, or did they “hear” of it? It should be noted that “adultery” was common and that this charge was rarely, if ever brought before the Sanhedrin who lacked the judicial power to enforce the death penalty. The Sanhedrin were under the judicial power of Rome, having become (as the other citizens of Jerusalem) a subjugated people to the Romans.

Point 2 – It should be noted that the man who committed the act is not present..

Vs. 5 -9 “ Tempting Him, that they might have to accuse Him…..He wrote on the ground.. This was a “symbolic” display of “indifference” to the entire matter. Jesus calmly ignored the matter before Him, knowing within Himself that the individuals involved were not interested in “justice or mercy,” but that their motive was driven by the deceitful desire to “dishonor” His office as The Prophet. Surely, The Prophet would “uphold” the law to insure that justice was carried out.

His response regarding those without sin should cast the first stone, brought the moral identity of the accusers into question. What was the motive behind their zeal to stone the woman? Was it there concern for society, was it their concern for those who had been harmed, or was it simply an opportunity to exploit the Master?

33

Page 35: The Gospel According to John

The Gospel According to John (8-6-14)John 8:1-15

Vs. 10 – 11 “ Sin is not condoned, God did not condemn (For God sent not His Son into the world to condemn the world, BUT that the world through Him might be saved) BUT God did acknowledge the transgression and require that the individual change their behavior – “go and sin no more.”

Vs. 12 – 15 “ Judge not by appearances” (opinions, thoughts, rationale, what things seem to be or we assume them to be) but judge based on what we know to be true and judge according to God’s Word.

34

Page 36: The Gospel According to John

The Gospel According to John (8-13-14)

John 8:15-23

Vs. 17 “it is also written in your law, that the testimony of two men is true” Note the comparative to vs. 16 where Jesus refers to the fact that He is not alone, but it is I and the Father. Consequently, the (two men) of vs. 17 may also be a reference to vs. 16.

Vs. 18 “ I am the one that bear witness of Myself” – “I have said it, and abide by it, and I know what I say and how fully I am fulfilling these words – and the Father which hath sent me beareth witness concerning me.

His Words reflected His Own Divine self-consciousness. The bore one witness to His unique position. They brought out the inner life of Christ, and revealed the Light that was Life. The Word and the speech of Christ was a fire that could never be extinguished – it was the formal utterance of the eternal reality, BUT it did not stand alone. The Father that sent Him, by a long chain of events and revelations, by miracles, by the confirmation of prophetic utterances from the past as well as the convicting influence in the lives of those that “heard Him” were sufficient to prove His point – I and My Father are one…..We see the mind of the Father and the mind of Christ revealed in One person, even Jesus.

Vs. 19 “Their angry retort – “Where is thy Father?” You have born witness concerning this unique witness and relationship that You have with the Father, so as in the words of Phillip – “Shew us the Father.” They were scoffing at the claim of His unique relationship with the Father. What proof has He (The Father) given of any special relationship to Thee?

Vs. 20 “Yet no man laid hands on Him” – again the expression of their vehement anger at and utter contempt for Jesus. Had it been possible, they would have murdered Him at the earliest opportunity.

Vs. # 41 “We be not born of fornication” (See Genesis 38:24-30) Vs. #33 “We were never in bondage to any man… (Israel was in bondage for 430 in Egypt; however, the seed of Esau was never in bondage) Vs. # 37 – “Because My Word has no place in you…” (See Genesis 25: 29-34 & Heb. 12:16-18)

Vs. # 43 “Ye cannot hear My Word.. Hear Gr. #191 (Akouõ) – pay attention to, understand or obey

Vs. # 44 “Ye are of your father the devil…” See Genesis 3:15 – There is ALWAYS hostility between the seed of the serpent and the seed of the woman

Vs. # 47 “He that is of God, heareth God’s Words” – John 10:27 “My sheep hear My voice” (My sheep pay attention to what I say. They understand my expectations and they willing obey.”

Vs. # 50 “There is One that seeketh and judgeth” - “For The Father judgeth no man, but, but hath committed all judgment unto The Son: that all men should honor The Son, even as they honor The Father. He that honoreth not the Son, honoreth not the Father that sent Him.” (Jn. 5:22-23) (Moses, Joshua, David, etc…..Deut. 18:15 – A prophet

38

Page 39: The Gospel According to John

The Gospel According to John (9-3-14)

John 9: 1-12

Vs. 1 -2 “ Who did sin, this man or his parents, that he was born blind” - Here the idea is presented that sin results in physical defects, illness or death. While this is true – ALL have sinned, so therefore, by this reasoning ALL SHOULD HAVE A PHYSICAL defect, which they do – BLINDNESS. In this case physical blindness is used to as an adjunct for spiritual blindness.

See Deut. 28: 58-62, 1 Corinthians 11: 27-32

Vs. 3 “But that the works of God should be manifest in him.” WOW!~ This should be a HUGE encouragement to us. Our defects, weaknesses, mental and physical imparities are all opportunities for the “WORKS OF GOD” to be manifest in us. (See 2 Corinthians 4: 1-12)

Vs. 4 “The night cometh, when no man can work” – Darkness (See Zephaniah, Joel, Isaiah)

Vs. 5 “I AM the Light of the World”

Vs. 17 “He said, He is a prophet” (Luke 4:24 – “No prophet is accepted in his own country.” Mark 6:4 – “ A prophet is not without honor, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house.”

There is nothing in John’s writings to suggest that Jesus said He was a prophet, but this statement may have resulted from “what others said about Him, following the miracle”, or that others heard Jesus declare the words above, which may have been communicated to the blind man.

Vs. 18 -21 “He shall speak for Himself.” – Why?

Vs. 22 “They feared the Jews” They feared excommunication from the assembly – “They sought the praise and approval of men, rather than God…….

Vs. 27 “I have told you already and you did not hear…..why would you hear it again? - “My sheep hear My voice and I know them: and they follow Me.” Will ye also be His disciples? Interesting question – will you be His disciples? > The man didn’t know Jesus, but He asked the question? > We are Moses’ disciples…...? (Really?)

Vs. # 1 -2 See Leviticus 1: 1-3, 3: 2, 4: 4 “The door into the presence of God” – The Tabernacle or “tent of meeting, where God meets with His people.”Vs. #3 The Porter here is the Father – The Father opened the door for the Son to offer up Himself. Man brought his offering to the door of the Tabernacle, which was as far as he could go. Someone else had to present his offering, which really wasn’t his, God provided the offering, that He required.

Vs. # 5 – The sheep do not follow strangers… Why? – They know the Master’s voice (His voice is His Word, which is made alive by His Spirit)

Vs. 7- 9 “ I AM the Door into the presence of God…ONLY THE HIGH PRIEST, could enter in through the door (veil) of the second tabernacle. See (Hebrews 9: 1-18)

John 10: 22 – 41

Vs. # 22 – The Feast of Dedication (This was the celebration of Hanukkah) In 168 B.C. the temple of the Jews was seized by the Syrian – Greek soldiers and dedicated to the worship of the god Zeus. In 167 B.C. Antiochus made the observance of Judaism a capital offence. The soldiers forced the Jews to bow down to their idols and to eat swine. The High Priest Mattathias refused, drew a sword, and killed the Greek officers that were present. He then fled to the mountains with a band of men who joined forces with him. The rebels became known as the Maccabees or Hasmoneans. Once the Maccabees had re-gained control of the temple, they purified it using the oil of dedication, which was used in the offering of animals and the observance of temple rituals. The menorah was lit and the oil, which was only to last one day, lasted eight days. The temple was dedicated on the 8th day.

Vs. #7-11 “If ye had known Me, ye should have known My Father also: and henceforth you have known him, and have seen Him.” (See Genesis 15: 1-12) Jehovah was known to His people through the works that He performed on their behalf) All of the “works” Jesus performed were for the purpose of demonstrating God Mercy and His Compassion. Nicodemus stated “that no man can do the miracles that Thou doest, except God be with Him.” (See Luke 1:46 -55 ) – The Lord has done GREAT things to me…….Vs. # 13,14 Whatsoever. The scope of prayer. In My Name, the ground of prayer. This involves at least two things: 1) Praying in the authority Christ gives (Matt 28:19, Acts 3:6) and 2) praying in union with Him, so that one does not pray outside His will. That will I do – The certainty of prayer. That the Father may be glorified in the Son. The Purpose of prayer.

Vs. #15 – If ye love Me – this is the atmosphere in which not only the command to pray, but all other commands of the Lord will be honored by His servants. Keep is in the imperative in the Greek, but other manuscript authority calls for a future form – “ye will keep.” Love is not primarily a sentimental attachment; it is the dynamic for obedience.

Vs. # 16 – “Another” Comforter – the better translation is Helper – or One who strengthens. So we inevitably have two helpers – a double portion of help so as to speak – Jesus and the Holy Spirit – (See Eccl. 4:9-12)

52

Page 55: The Gospel According to John

The Gospel According to John (2/3/15)John 14: 15 - 27Vs. # 15 “If ye love Me, keep My commandments”

I. Obedience as a “natural” consequence of our love –

Individual: where there is true love, there is rarely the need for a command, for love follows or flows like a stream into a river or as light from the sun. It is natural, peaceful – The Eagles 1972 “ A peaceful easy feeling” (Matt. 11:29)

Nationally: where there is national love, there is the implementation and application of His commandments, statutes and judgments. Emotions and feelings are set aside and are replaced by rigorous enforcement of the Divine Law. The result – Evil is crushed, society flourishes, peace, prosperity and divine health ensue, resulting in a Thankful, Humble, and Helpful people.

Where there is love to Christ:

1. There is recognition of His Divine authority Authority brings with it, the right or power to command. Love recognizes that authority and submits to it. Authority over community, state, nation and of course the individual. As it relates to the individual, authority over the heart, the mind, the will, the life if you will, both physical and spiritual.

2. There is a close and essential connection between Him and His commandments His Word is seen as the expression of Himself, His Thoughts, His Will, His Character – It is actually the True and Living God acting upon and addressing man’s nature. It is the nation acknowledging that He is The LORD, OUR GOD, and we are His people.

3. The recognition of His Authority is practical Love expresses itself in practical ways, not sentiment like a Hallmark, or American Greeting card. Love does the dishes, cleans up after the kids, takes out the trash, keeps its’ commitments….etc. Love for Christ manifests itself in practical ways as the service rendered is actually done for Him, individually or nationally.

53

Page 56: The Gospel According to John

The Gospel According to John (2/3/15)John 14: 15 – 27

4. The recognition of His Authority is thorough and comprehensiveLove treats little things with the same importance as BIG things; love makes no determination between them. True love is wise and is able to discern between good and evil. Love recognizes that the law is good and right and that any transgression of it is an affront to the Lawgiver. It recognizes that “The devil is in the details” and that sin is deceptive; it also recognizes that the little sin that is left unchecked, blossoms into a flower with seeds that perpetuates itself. Repentance is swift and continuous. Love is loyal to Him behind His back, so even if He is not present as King, to the individual and to the nation His laws “are more to be desired than gold, and sweeter than the honeycomb.”(Psalm 119:

II. Love to Christ as the necessary basis of obedience to Him (“The love of God has been shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Spirit Who is GIVEN unto us.’)

1. Obedience must be real and must spring from a change in heart Obedience that does not spring from a heart of gratitude is empty and vain. (1 Corinthians 13) if our love does not have it origin in the “death, burial and resurrection” of the Savior, it is no love at all.

2. Obedience must be easy and delightful Obedience which springs from fear, torment or custom is not love…….Love delights to do His Will. It freely offers itself in affection, willingly “laying itself down” so that in turn it may please the “Object” of its love.

The Gospel According to John (2/10/15)John 14: 16 – 21

Vs. #16 – “and I will ask the Father” – the word “ask” in Greek is used of an asking which is based on close and intimate fellowship; it is the word which implies the presentation or wish from an equal to and equal, rather than the “asking” which rises from and inferior to a superior – and He will give…….make or give a Divine manifestation of His Spirit. Give to you as a possession, another paraklete (helper) that He may be with you forever.

The NASB translates uses the word “HELPER” whereas the KJV uses Comforter. Some of the early translations including the Septuagint use the word consolation; however, the word in the passive form denotes “one called in” or “one called to the side of another” to help in anyway, but especially in legal proceedings and criminal charges so that the word “Advocate” or Pleader in us and for us is generally accepted by the modern translators.

Vs. #17 The Advocate is to the child of God:The Spirit of Truth – One Who argues against opposition, both real and imaginary. Real as in physical: (See Mark 13:11) Imagery as in thoughts or imagination: (See 2 Cor. 10: 3-5)

The Spirit of Holiness – Rom. 1:4, 8:9

The Spirit of Adoption – Rom. 8:15

The Spirit of Wisdom and Revelation – 1 Cor. 1:30, 1 Cor. 2: 1-12

“Whom the world cannot receive” - some theologians believe the word receive has been incorrectly translated and is more correctly the word – “seize” – the structure of the words “receive” and “seize” are very similar. The pointy being if it is the word “seize” that the world cannot “take it from you, because it neither seeth him or knoweth Him. In addition to the word structure being similar, John 16:8 points to the threefold ministry of the Spirit, which is to “convince the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment”
