UMCOR Flood Bucket Challenge We have a bucket list! Please help! UMCOR (United Methodist Committee on Relief) follows right behind the Red Cross in responding to
emergencies, focusing on clean up and rebuilding. UMC members assist
UMCOR by assembling relief kits which are stored in warehouses across
the country, ready to be distributed immediately at the time of need.
During recent flooding in Louisiana and West Virginia, thousands of
cleaning buckets were distributed. Now UMCOR needs to replenish the
warehouses to be ready for the next time. We want to fill at least 36
buckets.
You can help in three ways:
Sign up to purchase items from the list. Shop and deliver items to the church on Sundays, October 2, 9, 16, 23 or during office hours on weekdays (9am-3pm) OR make an online purchase (e.g. Amazon, etc.) and have the items shipped directly
to FUMC for delivery before October 23.
Make a monetary contribution that will allow others to shop for you. Make checks payable to FUMC with Bucket Project in the memo line. Deadline for monetary gifts is October 23.
Come help on Friday, October 28th, here at the church. A free dinner will be served at 6:30pm and we will start bucket packing at 7:15pm. Children are welcome and folks of all ages will be able to help, so bring the whole family and serve
together.
Missions Team members will be in Fellowship Hall before and after the 10:00am service on Sundays, October 2, 9, 16 and 23 to
answer questions and collect donations. See the bulletin board in Fellowship Hall for what is still needed and to sign up to purchase items. UMCOR has figured out what will fit in a five gallon bucket. Most items will be unwrapped before packing, so it is okay to purchase in any quantity.
Needed Each 5-gal bucket contains:
Need 36 Liquid laundry detergent: one 50-oz. or two 25-oz. bottle(s)
Need 36 Liquid household container: 12-16 oz. liquid cleaner that can be mixed with water. No spray cleaners.
Need 36 Liquid dish soap: 16-28 oz. bottle any brand
Need 36 1 can air freshener: aerosol or pump spray
Need 36 1 insect repellent spray: 6-14 oz. aerosol or pump spray
Need 36 1 scrub brush: plastic or wooden handle
Need 648 18 cleaning wipes: Handi Wipes or similar reusable wipes

Movie Night: What Dreams May Come October 14, 2016, 6:30-9:00pm
As a preview of an upcoming Theology
Caf adult class (coming October 30th),
be sure to join us for What Dreams May
Come, an Academy Award-winning 1998
film (rated PG-13) starring Robin
Williams, Cuba Gooding, Jr., and
Annabella Sciorra.
The story: When Chris Nielsen (Williams) dies in an accident, he tries to remain
close to his mortal wife, Annie. But tragedy is not done with the family, and Chris
must begin a quest through the afterlife, with the help of a guiding spirit, to
understand not only the mystery of the heavenly realm he finds himself in, but also
to rescue his wife from a potentially hellish fate. A brilliant and visually stunning
movie, with a story that dares to ask: is love really eternal? And can we choose
what sort of afterlife we will encounter?
Discussion is led by Scott Roby, a film buff and our Director of Congregational
Care. Bring a friend! You dont need to participate in the Theology Caf class to
attend the movie event.
Join us in Rooms 205/206 (the youth rooms) from 6:30pm to 9:00pm for the movie,
discussion, and refreshments. We are providing movie fare - popcorn and drinks.
Pizza will be available or youre welcome to bring your own dinner. Childcare & Transportation will be provided. Contact Gina Dawson to reserve your spot. ([email protected])
Michael Wu Doctoral Choral Conducting Recital October 22, 2016 7:00pm
You are cordially invited to Michaels second doctoral choral conducting recital. The
program is free and open to all. A reception follows the hour long program. The
program is themed on contrasts in music, and so the repertoire is presented in pairs:
composers who are aiming for new and different tone clusters, featuring
Solfeggio of Arvo Prt and the Chichester Mass of William Albright,
composers setting varying poems about night, featuring Waldesnacht of
Johannes Brahms and Die Nacht of Franz Schubert,
composers setting a poem of Robert Frost, featuring Stopping by Woods on a
Snowy Evening by Randall Thompson and Sleep by Eric Whitacre,
composers contrasting settings of music about birds, featuring
O, Had I Wings Like to a Dove by John Milton the Elder and Bluebird by Charles Villiers Stanford.
The program closes with two very different treatments of Praise to the Lord, Lobe den Herren by Hugo Distler and Johann
Sebastian Bachs sixth motet (BWV 230) Lobet den Herm.

Theology Caf: Life Everlasting Sundays, 11:30am beginning October 30, 2016
What Can The Bible Really Tell Us About It? And What Can Christians Believe About Heaven?
In this six-week class, led by Scott Roby, Director of Congregational Care, well
consider why questions about Heaven,
Hell, and the afterlife have been such a
lasting part of the Christian tradition
and what it means pastorally for us today as members of The United Methodist
Church. Come with an open mind and be ready to question life, and reality, itself.
You dont need to attend the movie event to participate in this study. The class will
meet in Room 206 with coffee & tea available. Please contact Gina Dawson if you
need childcare ([email protected]).

King and Ray Bradbury November 4, 2016, 6:30-9:00pm
Thrill to a quartet of classic Halloween-inspired tales of the macabre in old
school style radio drama! Featuring one story by Mr. Bradbury and three by Mr.
King (adapted from his short story collections Night Shift and Skeleton Crew) and
the voice talents of actors John Judy and Deryl Davis (see bios below) and some surprise guest Faith members! The performance will be in the Sanctuary with

This will be a catered dinner, so please RSVP to Scott Roby, Director of Congregational Care, for the event and dinner by October 23 ([email protected]).
We will also need some help with a pot-luck dessert offering to be held between readings #3 and 4. If you can help with dessert or have questions, please contact Scott.

October 2016 The Good News page 8
In reading the book, Teaching Music with Purpose , the author, Peter Boonshaft,
has this blessing for his readers: May the journey of your teaching be filled with
the magnificence and wonder of those with whom you share it. Faith UMC has
been very much that blessing in my musical and spiritual life, and I thank you for
your continued support as a congregation, and for the myriad volunteers and
colleagues who make the music here such an integral part of our community.
Michael Wu
All Saints Sunday November 6, 2016
We are continuing our custom at Faith UMC to remember
those from our membership, and those who are friends and
family of our members and friends, on the first Sunday in
November. Last year, we explored that remembrance with a
Missa dro defunctis (Mass for the Dead) which developed in the
sixteenth century. Our Chancel Choir and Childrens Choir
combined to contribute to
worship excerpts from the
Requiem set by French
composer Gabriel Faur, 1845
1924.
This year, I invite anyone
interested in joining our
Chancel Choir for a special
occasion (those who maybe
are not able to make a full-year commitment or who have
sung at Faith in the past and want to wade back in!) as we
sing excerpts from Requiem set by John Rutter (b. 1945).
We will lead off the first 30 minutes of rehearsals in October
(8 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, October 6, 13, 20; 8 to 9 p.m.
October 27 and November 3) with learning portions of
Rutters Requiem, which at the moment includes Requiem
Aeternam, Pie Jesu, Sanctus, and Lux Aeterna. Scores are
available from our choir library. A full translation of the
movements will be inserted into the bulletin for that week.
Let me know at [email protected] if you are planning
to participate so we can be ready for you!
Christ the King Sunday and
Celebration of
Music Ministries November 20, 2016
In my time at Faith, we have used the
last Sunday of Pentecost, also known
as Christ the King Sunday, as a day to
bring as much of our community
together making music during 10 a.m.
worship. Our Chancel Choir and
Young Singers of Faith (who started
out as our Childrens Choir and have
continued to sing even with
members now in middle school) will
combine as they always have. If you
would like to join us, we are singing
Siyahamba and a gospel setting of the spiritual, Ive Got a
Robe. We will work on those during the opening part of
Chancel Choir rehearsals, 8 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays,
November 10 and 17. Again, just let me know at
[email protected] if you are interested, and we will
have music and space ready for you!
What choristers and bell ringers know, what I will discuss
during that November 20 message, and what I hope each of
you who has an inkling to sing will join us to experience, is
that this particular art of ensemble music is the most
effective and tangible way to experience contributing your
best to create something much larger than any of us could
do individually. It is that metaphor that causes us to be in
community as Christians at Faith Church, and how we work
together to offer God praise and spread his Word in ways
much more powerful than we could do separately!
