October On Call Schedule

One of my favorite hymns in all the church is “I Sing a Song of the Saints of God.” I find it to be very

inspiring. It’s perhaps a little unusual to consider it that way, since we typically sing it during funerals, but the words are anything but depressing or mournful. This song is certainly no dirge. In fact, the melody moves pretty quickly from one line to the next, and even when we are together at church singing it over a family that grieves it’s hard to keep from smiling while singing. Here’s the first line: “I sing a song of the saints of God, patient and brave and true. Who toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord they loved and knew. And one was a doctor and one was a queen, and one was a shepherdess on the green: They were all of them saints of God, and I mean to be one too.” (See, I saw you. You smiled.) It’s perhaps a bit of a cliché, but we are very blessed as a congregation. Each time I drive up our driveway here on campus, and especially this time of year as the leaves begin to change into colors, I am over-whelmed by the graciousness and the bounty of bless-ings left to us by those that have come before us. Some of those from our past have already moved on ahead of us into the eternity promised by our loving God; some even rest in the garden behind my office. Others remain with us and continue to serve the future of our church, adapting our ministry in new ways girded and strength-ened by the past. And some are just beginning to clear their throat to find their voices of faith. Isn’t it great to watch children march down the aisle each week? It’s an amazing heritage we share as God’s people. All this is captured by the hymn. All these are saints of God. This month I want to invite you to partic-ipate in events that will enable us to be those “saints of God” we sing about. First, be sure and worship to-gether with us on Sunday, October 6, which has been designated by our denomination as World Communion Sunday. We will experience a parade of nations and the expression of our Christian faith in multiple languages. On Friday, October 11, you are invited to The Temple in West End for the Sabbath Service dedicating this year’s

Unity Build Habitat House. Last year, we joined hands literally across the aisles in celebration, Christians, Jews, Muslims and Hindus. On Sunday, October 20, we will welcome a special guest from the PCUSA in charge of our denominations missions to Central America and the Caribbean. Then of course, don’t miss our Fall Festi-val and Reformation Sunday Worship at the end of the month. As Reformed Christians, we see the world as di-verse and filled with the presence of God, and this month you can experience that blessing in all it’s fullness. One last thing, and perhaps as important as anything I have already mentioned. This year, our All Saints Sunday will be held the first Sunday of November as we remember those that have died since our last obser-vance. It’s not a mournful or distressing time, but one that is filled with celebration and the honor of those that have gone on ahead of us. Please help us by submitting to the office the names of those that have passed. Our custom is to remember the members of HPC and we have those names, but we welcome any other friend or family mem-ber that is significant to this congregation. Please plan to join together in worship on November 3; our early ser-vice will feature our tradition of Taize‘ and the late will be more traditionally Presbyterian. We will place flowers in the memorial garden that Sunday in memory of those loved ones at both services. My friends, I am overwhelmed by the bless-ings God has showered upon HPC. Simply said, those blessings are the saints that call this church home. As I continue to work alongside you and live life among you, each of you inspire me to be a better man, a better hus-band to my wife, a better father to my children, a better pastor, a better friend in my community and a better citi-zen of God’s world. You, O Saints of God at HPC, have toiled and fought and lived and died for the Lord you loved and knew. You are all disciples of Jesus Christ, but more than that you are a blessing for the world. I thank God for each and every one of you! May God continue to bless Hillsboro Pres-byterian Church!

Worship Team Notes It has been almost 25 years since a new hymnal has been intro-duced for PC (USA) churches, but the new 2013 Presbyterian Hymnal is being published this fall! The worship committee has chosen the red hym-nal to coordinate with our existing sanctuary colors. Throughout October you will have the opportunity to honor a loved one by purchasing a hymnal for only $20; envelopes will be in the pews for you to include your cash or check, and then place in the offering plate. A bookplate with your infor-mation will be placed on the cover of these hymnals that will be enjoyed for years to come. The goal is 250 hymnals, and the worship team will be staffing a table in the entrance following both services on October 6 and 27 to answer questions and accept donations. The flower book remains in the hallway with opportunities for you to honor someone or honor a special occasion with flowers in the sanctuary for the cost of $45. Statements or reminders for the cost are not mailed out. If you order flowers, please make a check out to Hillsboro Church and in the for line indicate flowers and the date. Please check and make sure you’ve paid for ordered flowers. We have a substantial amount unaccounted for. Stephen would like to thank everyone who participated, attended or gave a donation to the Moonlighters Big Band fundraiser for the music department! They raised almost $1000.00 to be used for the music depart-ment’s unbudgeted needs.

When I heard that a new Sunday School class was form-ing based on the Narrative Lectionary I couldn’t wait to get start-ed. I’ve tried in the past to keep up with the Revised Common Lectionary but found it to be way too much reading to incorporate into busy family life. The Narrative Lectionary takes a broader approach, and does it in four years instead of three—much more my speed. Each week Hudson emails pertinent information; links related to topics we discussed the previous Sunday, helpful info for the coming lesson, etc. While the lectionary is arranged as a comprehensive Biblical narrative, or a cohesive story, each lesson stands alone…so missing a week doesn’t mean there’s catch up work to do. We’ve had different faces and voices in the room each week reading passages, sharing diverse perspectives and explor-ing together the mysteries and messages of scripture. As the group continues to grow, I’m excited to share this journey into our col-lective story with others who are willing to wrestle with questions, know God more fully and be transparent with each other. There’s room for you. Come join us! *For a complete list of Sunday School classes see the flyer at the church entrance or check the Sept. newsletter

For $20 you can purchase a red hymnal, the worship team is trying to reach 250 hymnals.

The Mobile Meals program was started many years ago by Hillsboro and seven other churches in the Green Hills area to provide hot meals for those who can’t prepare them on their own. We have expanded the area covered to Division Street on the north, Franklin Road on the east, Old Hickory Blvd. on the south and West End/Harding on the west. The meals—prepared by Bates Senior meals and picked up by volunteers at the Calvary Methodist church— cost $2.75 a day and are delivered five days a week. Pat Fiete would like to extend an invitation to any one in the congregation who live in this area and need meals; please contact her about having meals delivered to your home. Pat is so blessed to have a wonderful group of vol-unteers who deliver meals on Mondays once a month. Do-ing God’s work are: Kim Srygley, Joe and Chris Swafford, David Dingler, Val Moth, Juliana Ericson, Lucy Carroll, Dot Blue, Nancy and Bruce Hartman, and subs Cheryl Ryans and Sherry Kelly, and of course Don and Pat who also do a route. If you would like to volunteer as a once a month driver or substitute in doing this blessed task, please contact Pat at 373-9775.

Mobile Meals Opportunity Women’s Prayer Group They will meet Thursday, October 17 at noon at Julia Harrell’s home. You are welcome to bring a lunch to

enjoy after prayer!

Women’s BreakfastThe women’s breakfast will be on Saturday, October 12 at 9:00am at HPC. Sharon will cook and all are

welcome!

Newsletter Changes Beginning in November, The Good News will start to transition from a logistics-based newsletter, to a more narrative-based newsletter. That means less

promotion of calendar events (which quickly become outdated) and more focus on telling stories about our members, our ministries and our events. Instead, the

church will utilize its weekly Emma emails to keep members up to date on basic information such as

meeting or prayer group times and locations. If you do not receive these emails please contact [email protected] to be added to the list. Also, please contact Whitley if you are interested in writing for the

newsletter, we can’t do this without you!
