The Gospel in the New and Old Testament

At no time in the worlds history has anyone ever earned salvation by

his own works. In both Old and New Testaments, people were saved

by the grace of God and the merits of Jesus. The following texts

make it clear that people who lived before the cross were saved on

the same terms as were people in New Testament times.

"I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ: for it is the power of God

unto salvation to every one that believeth; to the Jew first, and also

    to the Greek." Romans 1:16.

"For unto us was the gospel preached, as well as unto them." Heb

    4:2.

"For by the works of the law shall no flesh be justified." Galatians

    2:16.

"Neither is there salvation in any other: for there is none other name

under heaven given among men, whereby we must be saved." Acts

    4:12.

"But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel

unto you than that which we have preached unto you, let him be

    accursed." Galatians 1:8.

The Old Testament itself teaches salvation through Christ. The "scriptures"

spoken of in the following texts are the Old Testament. These texts make it

clear that the Old Testament scriptures teach the same gospel of salvation

through Christ that we find in the New Testament.

"Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures." 1 Corinthians 15:3.

"From a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make

thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus." 2 Tim 3:15.

"Then he said unto them, `O fools, and slow of heart to believe all that the

prophets have spoken: Ought not Christ to have suffered these things, and

to enter into his glory? And beginning at Moses and all the prophets, he

expounded unto them in all the scriptures the things concerning himself."

    Luke 24:25-27.

"All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for

reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." 2 Timothy 3:16.

The Bible presents one gospel from Genesis to Revelation, one plan of

    salvation for humanity.

The Bible calls it "the everlasting gospel"(Revelation 14:6), the "everlasting

    gospel"

Rev 14:6 And I saw another angel fly in the midst of heaven, having the

everlasting gospel to preach unto them that dwell on the earth, and to

every nation, and kindred, and tongue, and people, ...

    (Psalm 105:10; Hebrews 13:20)

Psalm 105:10 And confirmed the same unto Jacob for a law, and to Israel

    for an everlasting covenant:

Hebrews 13:20 Now the God of peace, that brought again from the dead

our Lord Jesus, that great shepherd of the sheep, through the blood of the

    everlasting covenant, ...

    Separation

Behold, the Lord's hand is not

    shortened, That it cannot save;

Nor His ear heavy, That it

    cannot hear. But your iniquities

have separated you from yourGod; And your sins have

hidden His face from you, So

    that He will not hear.

What Gospel was preached to Israel?

Thomas said to Him, "Lord, we do not know where You aregoing, and how can we know the way?"

Jesus said to him, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No

one comes to the Father except through Me. John 14:5,6

Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary; Psalm 77:13

And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among

    them; Exodus 25:8

Heb 8:1 Now of the things which we have spoken this is the sum:

We have such an high priest, who is set on the right hand of the

throne of the Majesty in the heavens; 2 A minister of the sanctuary,

and of the true tabernacle, which the Lord pitched, and not man.

The Significance of the Old Testament SanctuaryServices

Every element in the Old Testament ritual system was

specifically designed by Christ to illustrate His own work in the

plan of salvation. Every lamb that was slain prefigured Christ,

the Lamb of God, who would be offered for the sins of theworld. Everything the priests did pointed to Jesus, our great

High Priest in the courts above.

By contemplating the meaning of the ceremonies he

performed, an Israelite could understand the entire gospel of

salvation. The gospel of Christ is in the Old Testament

illustrated just as clearly as in the New Testament it is

    proclaimed.

    Contd

The ceremonial system centered around the sanctuary and its

services. It should not surprise us then that every major scenein the book of Revelation is oriented with respect to the temple

in heaven where Christ is ministering for us. The heavenly

    temple is specifically mentioned 14 times in Revelation (3:12;

    7:15; 11:1, 2, 19; 14:15, 17; 15:5, 6, 8; 16:1, 17).

Revelation is full of sanctuary terminology. Twenty-eight times

in Revelation Jesus is called the "Lamb". References to

sanctuary furniture such as the candlesticks, the altar of

incense, and the ark of the testament are found throughout the

book. Other references to the temple in heaven include Psalm11:4; 18:6; 102:19 Isaiah 6:1; Habakkuk 2:20; Malachi 3:1; and

    Hebrews 8 and 9.

The tabernacle on earth was patterned after thetemple in heaven. It consisted of two apartments, the

Holy Place and the Most Holy Place.

And let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them.According to all that I shew thee, after the pattern of the tabernacle,

and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so shall ye make

    it. Exodus 25:8-9

    Made after the Pattern

Further, the tabernacle built by Moses was made after a pattern. The

Lord directed him, "According to all that I show thee, after the pattern of

the tabernacle, and the pattern of all the instruments thereof, even so

shall ye make it." And again the charge was given, "Look that thou make

them after their pattern, which was showed thee in the mount. " Exodus

25:9,40. And Paul says, that the first tabernacle "was a figure for the time

then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices;" that its holy

places were "patterns of things in the heavens;" that the priests who

offered gifts according to the law, served, "unto the example and shadowof heavenly things," and that "Christ is not entered into the holy places

made with hands, which are the figures of the true, but into Heaven itself,

    now to appear in the presence of God for us." Hebrews 9:9, 23; 8:5;

    9:24.

    The Pattern of the sanctuary:

Remind that the wilderness sanctuary was patterned afterthe heavenly sanctuary. Emphasize that Jesus Christ is the central figure in theheavenly sanctuary.

Highlight that the services and symbols of the earthlysanctuary pointed to Christ.

The central figure of the sanctuary in heaven is Christ. It isaround His life, death, and resurrection that the hope of

eternal life is based. Thus, the services and symbols used in the sanctuary onearth pointed to Christ, to the beauty of His character, and toHis love and justice.

The Sanctuary Revealed the Fall and Restoration of Man

In Adam, humanity sinned, was defiled, and condemnedto death. In Christ, the same humanity was reconciled toGod, cleansed from all defilement, and justified to life(Romans 5:18)

Through faith in Christ, sinners experience salvation

    Three Steps in the Atonement

By studying the plan of salvation as illustrated in the OldTestament sanctuary services, we may learn much about

    the great work of atonement.

The word "atonement," or at-one-ment, refers to the

process whereby man is reconciled to God.

ATONEMENT is a word that we do not normally use today.

Instead we prefer to use the words RECONCILE or

RECONCILIATION, which basically mean the same thing[look for example at Rom. 5:11 in the KJV and the

NIV, which, incidentally, is the same as the NKJV]

  • 7/29/2019 The good news about Jesus Christ

    25/102

The word atonement means removing any barrier that has

caused the separation of two people, thus bring them togetheronce again. Hence, when this happens, they have beenreconciled. When used theologically, the word atonement refersto the expiating or removing of our sins which has separated ussinners from a holy God [read Isa. 59:1, 2, 3].

1 Behold, the Lord's hand is not shortened, that it cannotsave; neither his ear heavy, that it cannot hear:2 But your iniquities have separated between you and yourGod, and your sins have hid his face from you, that he willnot hear. *3 For your hands are defiled with blood, and your fingerswith iniquity; your lips have spoken lies, your tongue hathmuttered perverseness.

  • 7/29/2019 The good news about Jesus Christ

    26/102

On the cross the sins of the entire human race was atoned for by thedeath of Jesus Christ. As a result sinful humanity was reconciled toGod. This atonement or reconciliation was perfect, full, and complete.

This is part and parcel of the good news of the gospel and theNew Testament clearly teaches this [read Rom. 5:10; 2 Cor. 5:18, 19;Col. 1:19, 20].

Does the fact that sinful humanity has already been reconciled to

God mean that there is no final atonement?

There is going to be a final atonement. But how can there be a finalatonement, to be accomplished sometime in the future, if theatonement on the cross was full and complete?

Salvation in the Bible is presented as both an objectivetruth as well as a subjective experience, the problem issolved

  • 7/29/2019 The good news about Jesus Christ

    27/102

As an objective truth, all Christians can claim I am already

saved in Christ [Eph. 2:6]. This is what gives us assuranceof salvation. But as a subjective experience, we Christians must alsoadd I am being saved daily from the power and slaveryto sin (i.e., I am being sanctified), as well as I will be

saved at the second advent of Christ from the natureand presence of sin (i.e., I will be glorified).

The same truth or idea must be applied to the doctrine ofatonement. As an objective truth the entire human racehas already been reconciled to God.But as a subjectiveexperience the atonement has more than one phase, ofwhich the final atonement is the culminating one.

  • 7/29/2019 The good news about Jesus Christ

    28/102

    Atonement Experienced

The Bible show at least threephases of the subjective experience

    of the atonement or reconciliation:

  • 7/29/2019 The good news about Jesus Christ

    29/102

    1. The reconciliation between mankind and God. Please note: Idid not say between God and mankind. That has alreadytaken place on the cross. In other words, reconciliation or at-one-ment is a two-way affair. As far as God is concerned, He

has already reconciled Himself to mankind by the death of HisSon. What is left is for us humans to be reconciled to Him [2Cor. 5:18-20.]

2 Corinthians 5:18 And all things are of God, who hath reconciled us tohimself by Jesus Christ, and hath given to us the ministryof reconciliation;19 To wit, that God was in Christ, reconciling the world

unto himself, not imputing their trespasses unto them; andhath committed unto us the word of reconciliation.20 Now then we are ambassadors for Christ, as though Goddid beseech you by us: we pray you in Christ's stead, be yereconciled to God.

  • 7/29/2019 The good news about Jesus Christ

    30/102

    2. The Bible also speaks of atonement as an on goingapplication through the high priestly ministry of Christ in the

heavenly sanctuary. While Christ is the Saviour of allmankind, He is the priest or mediator of only the believerswho have by faith been reconciled to God. We believers arestill sinners, in and of ourselves, and Satan uses this toaccuse us before God day and night [Rev. 12:10]. However,

while Satan does this, Christ is daily or continually applyingHis blood to defend our atonement or reconciliation [Heb.2:17].

    Hebrews 2:

17 Wherefore in all things it behoved him to be madelike unto his brethren, that he might be a merciful andfaithful high priest in things pertaining to God, to makereconciliation for the sins of the people.

  • 7/29/2019 The good news about Jesus Christ

    31/102

    3. Lastly, the Bible speaks of a final atonement when sin will beeradicated and the whole universe will be at-one-ment with God. Eventhough we Christians stand perfect in Christ and have the fullassurance of salvation we still have sinful flesh. Therefore, there is no

at-one-ment or peace between the flesh and our converted minds

    Romans 7: 24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver mefrom the body of this death? 25 I thank God through Jesus Christour Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God;

but with the flesh the law of sin.

Hence, we long for the redemption of our bodies [read Rom. 8:22-25;Phil. 3:20, 21].Phil 3: 20 For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also

we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ: 21 Who shallchange our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto hisglorious body, according to the working whereby he is able evento subdue all things unto himself.

This is part of the final atonement.

  • 7/29/2019 The good news about Jesus Christ

    32/102

Furthermore, until Christ comes we are living in a world which is, to alarge degree, still under the control of Satan, the enemy of souls. As aresult, we Christians may describe ourselves as citizens of heaven butliving in enemy territory. That means Satan can make and does make

life hell for us. So we look forward to the second and third coming ofChrist so that we may live in heaven and the new earth at-one-ment[Rev. 21:1 And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the firstheaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was nomore sea. 2 And I John saw the holy city, new Jerusalem, coming

down from God out of heaven, prepared as a bride adorned forher husband. 3 And I heard a great voice out of heaven saying,Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell withthem, and they shall be his people, and God himself shall be withthem, and be their God. 4 And God shall wipe away all tears from

their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, norcrying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former thingsare passed away.5 And he that sat upon the throne said, Behold, I make all thingsnew. And he said unto me, Write: for these words are true and

    faithful.]

  • 7/29/2019 The good news about Jesus Christ

    33/102

This is what the doctrine of final atonement is all about. It is notadding to the finished atonement of the cross, but making real inexperience what Christ has already obtained for mankind by Hisbirth, life, death, and resurrection. The final atonement is theclimax, the Halleluia Chorus of the plan of redemption. It is aglorious doctrine that we must not be ashamed of, because itpoints us forward to the reality of salvation, which at the momentis ours only by faith

[Heb. 11:11 Now faith is the substance of things hoped for,the evidence of things not seen.]

  • 7/29/2019 The good news about Jesus Christ

    34/102

When the doctrine of the final atonement is understood in thecontext of legalism, it becomes a terrible doctrine which robs usof the joy of salvation. But correctly understood, the doctrine ofthe final atonement is of tremendous help to believers to hold on

    to our confidence in Christ

[Rev. 22:20, 2120 He which testifieth these things saith,Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so, come, Lord Jesus.21 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all.

    Amen.]

the Day of Atonement. It was the day on

which the sanctuary was cleansed. It was

considered the most solemn and significantevent of the year. On that day the whole

congregation appeared before the Lord that

they might be made "at one" with Him. Sins

which had been brought to the sanctuary

throughout the year were figurativelyremoved from it on that day. But those who

failed to humble themselves before God

were cut off from the people.

On that day the high priest alone appeared before

God behind the veil of the Most Holy Place. With

him he took the blood of a goat and a censer of

coals from the altar of incense. This represented

the final phase of Christs work in the heavenly

sanctuary, performed in "the time of the end." The

work of atonement is not complete until the

    sanctuary is thus cleansed.

Scripture references to the Old Testament Day of Atonement

include Leviticus 16 and Leviticus 23:27-32.Information on the end-time cleansing of the sanctuary is

found in Daniel 8:14; Malachi 3:1-5; and Hebrews 8 and 9.

Sacrifice is made, the cleansing blood is applied at themercy seat as well as at the altar of incense. The sanctuary

is cleansed. The priest returns from the cleansing of the

sanctuary "when he has made an end of atoning for thetabernacle of meeting and the altar" (Lev. 16:20) Then he

goes and places ALL the sins upon the goat who is cast farout, forever banned (this goat is not the sacrifice )

    Exodus 27:1-8, 38:1-7.

After confessing his sins over the animal and slaying it, the sinner let

the priest as mediator take the lamb (or whatever animal was offered)

and place selected portions of it (such as the fat, Lev. 4, 9) on

the Brazen (Brass) Altar of Burnt Offerings, to be consumed by the

flames. For those too poor to offer an animal, an offering of flour was

permitted (Lev 5:11), which was also burned on the Altar. The Altar

was constructed ofAcacia wood, covered with brass. The Acacia

wood symbolized the works of humanity, that but for the brasscovering would be consumed by the fire.

The brass was a symbol of suffering, so this Altar represented the

suffering and death of Jesus Christ that covers and protects the

repentant sinnerfrom the divine fire of Judgment. The Altar had at

each of its corners, a horn, representing the power, strength, honor, and victory of God.

Before being sacrificed, the animal was secured to the horns of the

Altar (Psalm 118:27). Blood from the sacrificed animal was placed

on the horns of the Altar by the priest, and the rest was poured out

at the bottom of the Altar (Exodus 29:12, Lev 4:7). The fire for

the Brazen Altar of Burnt Offerings was a special

divinely lit fire, that was started by fire coming down

out of heaven (Lev 9:24). This symbolically represents

the fire that will ultimately consume all sinners,

known as the lake of fire in Revelation.

    The Laver

    Exodus 30:18-21, 38:8

Located between the Brazen Altar of Burnt Offerings and the Sanctuary, the Laver was a basin filled with water used for ritual cleansing. The Laverwas made from the brass "looking glasses" (mirrors) of the women. Before handling the animal sacrifices brought by the people, the priestwould have to cleanse his hands and feet with water from the Laver. This

was symbolic of the act of baptism. Baptism is adeclaration of the repentant sinner that he has been buriedwith Jesus Christ and resurrected with him as a newcreature (Rom 6:4-13). The polished brass of the Laver is to be a"looking glass" revealing our sins, and showing us our need for a Savior,

that we might be baptized and receive the righteousness that God offersus through His Son Jesus Christ. If the priest were to neglect thisact of cleansing, he would be struck dead as a result(Exodus 30:21). Why? Because to reject the cleansingrighteousness of Jesus Christ is to die in one's own sin.

for the services. These activities carried on outside

the Sanctuary represented the process of

justification or forgiveness or pardon and

reconciliation of the sinner through the death of

Jesus Christ on the cross, and the acceptance ofthat vicarious sacrifice of the Lamb of God by the

    The Golden Candlestick (Menorah)

    Exodus 25:31-39, 37:17-24.

Inside the Sanctuary itself, in what is known as the firstapartment, or Holy Place, were three pieces of furniture. To

the south side of the room was a large golden candelabra, or

Menorah, that had six branches off of a central candlestick. The

Menorah used pure olive oil as fuel. It was the job of the priests todaily trim the wicks (which were made of old priestly garments) and

refill the bowls of oil, so that the Menorah would constantly be a

source of light for first apartment or Holy Place. The Menorah

represented Jesus Christ, who is the light of the

world, and the olive oil was symbolic of the Holy Spirit

and the wicks were symbolic of the righteousness of

Christ. The Menorah also represents the seven churches of

Revelation, who are to share the light of the gospel message with

the rest of the world. It can be found in Revelation 1:12 and 4:5.

Exodus 25:23-30, 37:10-16. On the north side of the Holy Place was a small table known

as the table of Showbread. It was constructed of

Acacia wood and covered with gold. On it were kept

12 loaves of unleavened bread (Leviticus 24:5-9).These loaves were symbolic of Jesus, who is the bread of life

(John 6:35), but they also represent the 12 tribes of Israel.

Also kept on the Table of Showbread, were

offerings of wine (Number 28:7), so both the breadand the wine of the Lord's supper were

    Exodus 30:1-10, 37:25-29.

On the west side of the Holy Place, immediately before the

veil separating the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place, was

a small Golden Altar of Incense. In it was a brass pot,

containing hot coals from the Brazen Altar of Burnt Offerings,

and it was here that a very special blend of incense was

burned by the priest, which filled the Sanctuary with a sweet

smelling cloud, representing the prayers of the believers.

Sacrificial blood was sometimes put on the horns of the

Golden Altar of Incense (Lev. 4:7, 18). The Golden Altar ofIncense also figures prominently in the book of Revelation

(Rev 8:3-5) with regard to the end of judgment, or close of

    Exodus 26:31-33, 36:35, 2 Chronicles 3:14

This veil or curtain between the two apartments ofthe Sanctuary, the Holy and the Most Holy, has greatsignificance. This is because it was this veil that toreat the very moment Jesus died on the Cross,

The veil represents the torn body of Jesus

(Hebrews 10:20). It is only by passing through this veil thataccess is possible to the Most Holy place of judgment. The

tearing of the veil is symbolic of the death of the Lamb of God,

which now permits the believer in His atonement immediate

access to the Most Holy place, of God, the place of judgment, through the new High Priest Jesus Christ, the one and only

of the Ark was called the Mercy Seat (Exodus 25:17), andabove it was where the glory of the Lord was present, between twocovering cherubs, or angels, on either end of the Ark. The Mercyseat, or lid, represented Jesus Christ, the mediator for humanitybetween the Law of God, that requires the death of the sinner, and

a merciful God. The High Priest was the only person allowed toenter the Most Holy place where the Ark was kept, and that wasonly on one day of the year, the Day of Atonement (known today asYom Kippur).

    Judgment

The activities on the day of Atonement symbolized thepeople of God, seeking representation by their High

Priest Jesus Christ in the judgment, who met all thedemands of the law perfectly and then was sacrificedfor our sins. He paid the price for our disobedience, though he was perfectly obedient. The Hebrew Sanctuaryillustrates that ultimately all humanity will be judged by the

standards of God's Law. Those with faith will keep the Lawperfectly through Jesus Christ. Those without faith will not havebeen able to keep the Law of God, and must die as a result. Afterall, the wages of sin is death. Since the Law of God could not bechanged, Jesus died for us, in our place, to satisfy the Law.

By faith, we will take on the righteousness of Christ and be judgedas keepers of the Law, with a right to the tree of life and eternal life.

Just as all Israel sought representation by the High Priest on thatday, we should be fervently seeking our High Priest, Jesus Christ,to represent us in Judgment.

When you enter the Tabernacle through the gate, which is on the

east, you come to this altar first, made ofacacia wood, known

for its hardness and durability. It is harder than oak. The

boards are overlaid with brass. 7.5 square and 4.5 tall, with a

horn on each corner to tie the animals to. A mesh or grate of brass

is inside midway down where the offerings are burnt.

    V. 3 tells us of these utensils, some to get rid of ashes, others to

carry blood into the Holy of Holies. The fleshhooksallow the priestto move the sacrifice. The firepans were used to move the coals of

fire from place to place when the Tabernacle was transported...it

was a perpetual fire. The first ever sacrifice there was consumed

by fire from God in heaven which was never to go out. They alsoused these firepans to move fire inside to the altar of incense.

The word altar literally means, A place of slaughter. In the OT

man had to do this to meet with God. But why not today? Our altar

at the front is a different kind of altar.

He stands there as aconvicted sinner, guilty. To try to climb the fence or jump over would meaninstant death...theres only one way in. Purple Covered The Altar. Then they shall take away the ashes from the altar,

Purple has become the symbol of royalty, but it clearly was a symbolthat was related to the priesthood and sacrifice when God used it. Thiscolor was in the priest's garments and the coverings of the sanctuary andthe doorways. Significantly, the altar of sacrifice was covered in purplewhen the sanctuary was moved. (Numbers 4: 13). This prophecy was

fulfilled when he was dressed in purple at the trial. Covered The Priest-King. And the soldiers twisted together a crown of

thorns and put it on His head, and put a purple robe on Him; (John 19: 2;Mark 15: 17)

The priest is the lawyer for the government and law of God. He

studies this law and teaches it to the people and administers justice. Therefore, Christ becomes our priest and defender before God. The colorpurple is in the doors to the sanctuary because the sanctuary is the placewhere we go to get justice from God.

    Finding the Most Holy Place

All heaven watched with the deepest interest the reception of the

first angel's message. But many who professed to love Jesus, and

who shed tears as they read the story of the cross, derided the

good news of His coming. Those who rejected the first message

could not be benefited by the second; neither were they benefitedby the midnight cry, which was to prepare them to enter with Jesus

by faith into the most holy place of the heavenly sanctuary. And by

rejecting the two former messages, they have so darkened their

understanding that they can see no light in the third angel's

message, which shows the way into the most holy place.

    Finding the Most Holy Place

I saw that as the Jews crucified Jesus, so the nominal churches

had crucified these messages, and therefore they have no

knowledge of the way into the most holy, and they cannot be

benefited by the intercession of Jesus there. Like the Jews, who

offered their useless sacrifices, they offer up their useless prayersto the apartment which Jesus has left; and Satan, pleased with the

deception, assumes a religious character, and leads the minds of

these professed Christians to himself, working with his power, his

signs and lying wonders, to fasten them in his snare.

Some he deceives in one way, and some in another. He has

different delusions prepared to affect different minds. Some look

with horror upon one deception, while they readily receive

another. Satan deceives some with Spiritualism. (Contact with

fallen angels) He also comes as an angel of light and spreadshis influence over the land by means of false reformations. The

churches are elated, and consider that God is working

marvelously for them, when it is the work of another spirit. The

excitement will die away and leave the world and the church in a

worse condition than before. EW 260, 261

    Satan sends power and light

I turned to look at the company who were still

bowed before the throne; they did not know that

Jesus had left it. Satan appeared to be by the

throne, trying to carry on the work of God. I saw

them look up to the throne, and pray, "Father, giveus Thy Spirit." Satan would then breathe upon them

an unholy influence; in it there was light and much

power, but no sweet love, joy, and peace. Satan's

object was to keep them deceived and to draw backand deceive God's children. Early Writings 56
