Sermon Pastor Terry Purvis-Smith “Free to Do Everything; But Not Everything is Helpful”
We seek to share the good news of Jesus Christ and his call to the realm of God: the practice of justice, mercy and faith. Our mission is represented by the
Celtic cross, a shepherd’s crook, the extension of the right arm of fellowship into the world and the
church’s hospitality toward the world.
Greeting The Lord be with you. | And also with you.
Focus on Ministry
Prelude We Are Marching in the Light Mary Howarth and Hiram Titus
Call to Worship I believe this is Jesus. Come and see, come and see! The light of God shines in his face. Come and see, come and see! He offers all his pardoning grace. Come and see, come and see!
Gathering Hymn 726 Will You Come and Follow Me
Prayer of Confession Nothing can be hidden from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth, whose wisdom is endless, whose mercy is great. Trusting in God’s grace, let us confess our sin.
God of abundant mercy, you embodied love for us in the life of Jesus Christ. You ate with sinners and shared with outcasts. You loved with boldness and healed with grace. Forgive us, O God, when we do not trust your love: when we doubt whether we are worthy of your care. Forgive us, O God, when we try to cheapen love: when we limit it to shallow feelings instead of bold actions. Help us, O God, when we cannot feel your love, when we are isolated, afraid, and unable to see your presence. Forgive us, O God, of the ways we fall short. Free us to try again, and let your love lead the way.
Time of Silent Confession
January 17, 2021 Second Sunday after Epiphany
Are you interested in contributing to our online worship? Contact Leah Bergman at [email protected] and she can help match you with a Sunday and the scripture lessons that go along with it. Then you’ll record yourself at home, send her the video and she will incorporate it into the worship service for that Sunday!
Here are some ways you could offer to volunteer during this time: Read or act out one or more of the scripture lessons for the day Read a prayer or other part of the liturgy for the day Play or sing some special music Dance, draw, paint, take a picture
Affirmation of Faith Adapted from the Confession of 1967 God’s sovereign love is a mystery beyond the reach of the human mind. Human thought ascribes to God superlatives of power, wisdom, and goodness. But God reveals divine love in Jesus Christ by showing power in the form of a servant, wisdom in the folly of the cross, and goodness in receiving sinful people. The power of God’s love in Christ to transform the world discloses that the Redeemer is the Lord and Creator who made all things to serve the purpose of God’s love.
