On what seemed like the coldest Friday night of the year, the hilton hall held its inaugural “Pumpkin Party”.

This was a fun night for the people who attended. The many children had a wonderful time in the main hall running round slipping and sliding on the wooden floor, while the adults had a great time catching up round the fire. After the Pot Luck Tea, the pumpkins were judged - the children judged “Jack a Lantern”.

The committee thanks Geraldine ITM, Canterbury Long Run Iron, Gary Allan Builder, Timaru District Council and the hobson Trust for their assistance with re-roofing the hall. Without their support this project would not have been possible.

The hilton hall committee is now organising their annual winter dance for July.

In a world where prices keep going up, McKenzie Lifestyle Village’s weekly fee is guaranteed to stay fixed. That’s your rates, insurance,

building maintenance, gardening, lawn-mowing and community facilities all covered by a fee fixed for the term of your occupancy.

Good insulation and great supplier deals mean power bills are cheaper, too,and it’s even possible to participate in the capital gain when you leave.

If this makes sense, call David Connolly now on 03 693 8340.

Community and security that makes financial sense, too.

Girl Guides raising funds for jamboreesIt’s a fundraising frenzy

for Geraldine Girl Guides, to support 13 girls plus leaders who will be attending jamborees in Australia and Christchurch. A jamboree is a huge international camp attended by girl guides from all over the world.

Most of the Geraldine guides want to go to the Christchurch Jamboree but Sian Boase (12) and Brooke Dwyer (13) chose to go to Australia. “We want to meet other girls and learn more about them and swap badges,” says Brooke.

Kim Dwyer is the national contingent leader for the Australian Jamboree near Brisbane in September. She will take 29 guides and leaders from all over New Zealand to the event and is responsible for them all while they are away.

“ I t ’ s a n i n c r e d i b l e opportunity for the girls to meet guides from different cultures and learn to get along with other people. They’ll be camping in the bush near a lake for 10 days, so there’ll be lots of water activities.”

To raise costs of $2,000 each Kim, Brooke and Sian have run a bouncy castle at local events, and had a stall at the Geraldine Arts & Plants Festival. Sian has also made and sold earrings and flax flowers, and helped with the clean up after the Winchester rodeo. Kim has produced a tea towel printed with a favourite recipe (still available for purchase at $10 each or two for $15; phone Kim on 693 9533). Their next fundraising event will be to provide catering at the upcoming Woodbury dog show on 28 June. Kim, Brooke and Sian sincerely thank the Geraldine community and their families for their support.

The New Zealand International Jamboree happens once every four years and this time Geraldine guides are lucky that Christchurch is the venue. The event takes place in January 2016. Over 2,000 girls and 700 leaders will attend, including 11 Geraldine guides and leaders Maree Rowley and Kim Dwyer.

“My hope is that after attending the Christchurch Jamboree

the girls will do what Sian and Brooke are doing and take the next step overseas and be an international representative of New Zealand,” says Maree. She explains that at a compulsory pre-jamboree camp the girls have to learn to take three-minute showers as well as basic camping skills. “This is so they know how to sleep in a tent for a week without all the comforts of home.”

Charlotte Rowley (11) says, “I’m looking forward to making friends with people from different countries and all around New Zealand.”

The guides hope to raise over $8,000 and have started selling pine cones at $5 a bag; contact Bronwyn Patrick on 693 8770 to buy some. Other fundraising plans include:

A quiz night at Woodbury hall on Saturday 13 June. architectural award for former Geraldine High school student

Fomer Geraldine high School student Beth Cameron is an award-winning architect. With her colleagues at Makers of Architecture, Beth won a New Zealand Institute of Architects (NZIA) Canterbury regional award for designing a studio in Governor’s Bay.

T h e i r s m a l l - p r o j e c t category entry, now short-listed for the national-level award, is exemplary in terms of cost-effectiveness, sustainable materials and effective use of space; but what is especially remarkable is the two-storey studio’s digital design and pre-fabrication.

I t i s a lead ing -edge technology and the signature process of the Wellington company. “We 3-D model e v e r y t h i n g , ” e x p l a i n s Beth. “It’s called Building In format ion Model l ing (BIM).

“A computer numerical control (CNC) cutter - like a laser”, cuts cross-laminated timber (CLT) and structural plywood materials precisely. “There’s a drill bit that’s controlled by the computer and follows the lines we ask it to cut.

“We have a 470m2 workshop – basically, a big house-building workshop – that has CNC machines in it and we pre-fabricate building components.” With pieces cut exactly, the plywood and CLT connections are easy.

The award-winning building is the result of a full trial run of their design system. “Right at the beginning of the company, we had this opportunity to test our concept and method and equipment,” says Beth. With components cut, the 65m2 Governors Bay studio took only three days to erect. “It’s compact but surprisingly spacious, with a full-size kitchen and bathroom. It’s 2.7m from the floor to the ceiling.”

NZIA judges commented, “This little building punches well above its weight... Despite the precision of the fabrication process and the speed of design and erection, the building is humanist in every respect...”

The other point of difference for Makers of Architecture is

that from conversation with clients to build completion, the business owns the process. Construction is led by company partner Ben Sutherland, whose path to architecture traversed work as a qualified builder.

Traditional architect-builder separation can cause miscommunication, says Beth. her company’s process “changes the role of the architect. When the architects are responsible for the components going together properly, clients can be confident of a good outcome.”

Makers of Architecture personnel will eventually include a structural engineer, several builders, architectural designers and architecture students or draftspeople, as well as architects.

Company principles remain in clear view despite the whirlwind of process and business development. Beth says, “We want to make architecture accessible to everyone. Value should never be discounted over the lifetime of a holistically-designed building... and with our precision you get good-quality assurance and cost certainty.”

The New Zealand Architecture Awards winners will be announced in November.

Create your own energy in Geraldine

you too can begin to harness and use your own energy with the power in the sun with no upfront costs.

After Geraldine’s successful Future Living Festival, Chris Freear, a festival presenter is coming back to Geraldine. The interest in his talk “Powering our Future” prompted him to return to Geraldine. This time he will talk details of the programme, solarZero, from Solar City.

“When I initially heard about this programme, I thought that it was too good to be true and I know others have had the same reaction,” says Sarah Johnston, a Future Living Festival organising-team member and homeowner in Geraldine. “So the intention of this meeting is to get the nitty gritty questions answered. There will be an opportunity for those who would like to enter to programme to sign up. It’s a fantastic opportunity for the Geraldine community.”

Once qualified, the solarZero programme will install the photovoltaic (PV) panels on your roof (by trained and certified installers), maintain them (for 20 years) and provide technical support, monitor the carbon savings and include warranties at no upfront panel or installation costs. you then get to use the solar power directly generated by your own panels for a fixed monthly solar fee (for 20 years) that is at a lower kWh rate then your current grid power rate.

“I have visions of making Geraldine the solar capital of South Canterbury,” says Sarah. “This programme is a great way for us to utilise the sun’s energy at a very low rate for everyone. Whether you are a homeowner, landlord or business owner, it just makes sense.”

This free informative meeting will be held at the Geraldine Resource Centre at 7.30pm on 17 June.

Geraldine Indoor Bowling Club’s pairing of Roydon Wood and Bev Hill were in top form at the Geraldine Temuka Indoor Bowls Open Pairs tournament. A good field of 22 teams took part with 9 teams qualifying. Many of the combinations entered were using the opportunity to get in some game-time in preparation for the NZ Nationals in Timaru.

The semi-finals came down to Wood and Hill playing Barry and Helen Black (Central Club) with some close ends, but Wood kept Black out of the scoring on all but two ends, and took the game 7-5. The other semi final was between Derek and Carolyn Cooper (West End Club) and Steve and Barbara Smith (Washdyke). Smith showed good form and dominated the game to take it out 13-7.

The final looked to be in Smith’s favour with the score 8-1 after 6 ends, but Wood came back into the game and scored a 4 and a 3 on the next two ends to be all tied up at 8-all going into the final end. Wood was able to hold the winning shot and won the game 9-8.cribbage
