The South Bronx• Hip Hop was birthed in the early 70’s as

subculture in the South Bronx.• It began with DJ Kool Herc and Afrika

Bambaataa scratching old funk records at block parties

• Both of these men organized these parties to keep the youth out of trouble

The 4 Elements• Eventually the

community started to expand on the “Hip-Hop culture.”

• By The Early 80’s Hip-Hop had spread throughout almost all of the urban areas in the country.

• Hip Hop provided an outlet for struggling teens in these areas through art, dance, and of course the music.

• There are 4 main elements to Hip-Hop that make up the culture.

• Many people only see the rapper or the emcee as the main aspect of Hip-Hop.

• The 4 Elements are Rapping, DJing, Breakdancing, and Graffiti

MCing is derived from the griots (folk poets) of West Africa, and Caribbean-style toasting, and it had found a new place in the ghettos of the Bronx. Usually it was a message about the happenings of the community

Breakdancing To

accompany the MCing and DJing a new form of dancing to the rhythm was born. It was know as Break Dancing. Break-dancers would form crews and battle each other on the dance floor or the street.

Positive Effects of Hip-Hop

New York City teenagers, after years of gang violence, were looking for new ways express themselves. These outdoor parties, hosted in parks, became a means of expression and an outlet for teenagers.

• Instead of getting into trouble on the streets, teens now had a place to expend their energy. Tony Tone, a member of the pioneering rap group the Cold Crush Brothers, noted that “Hip-hop saved a lot of lives.” MC Kid Lucky mentions “People used to break-dance against each other instead of fighting.”

Hip-Hop spread from the South Bronx as a local area culture to a worldwide phenomenon. Much of the material today may be controversial and counter-productive to the reason Hip-Hop was invented, but it still unifies the world and used correctly, can be a powerful tool to educate the youth and do great things.
