What’s not to love? This issue celebratesthe men and women of the industry whoinspire and motivate — good people whoare doing great things. These individuals aresetting the standard for corporate leader-ship, research and development, technologyenhancement, creativity, marketing, strate-gy, and more. In an industry that at times isslow to change, these individuals are havinga positive impact through their actions.

We want to thank all of our readers whotook time out of their busy schedules tonominate their choices for this year’sPharmaVOICE 100. The nominations start-ed to roll in Aug. 1, 2007, with the last entrybeing posted May 1, 2008, at 11:59 p.m. Inthose nine months we received thousands ofentries, which reaffirmed what many of ushave known for some time: real-life heroes doexist in this industry, an industry that isoften maligned and misunderstood.

This outpouring of support has beenexciting and challenging. As you mightimagine, each year the selection processbecomes more difficult. With thousands ofnominees to consider, our staff relies on notonly the number of nominations received, but the write-ups themselves, which pro-vide comprehensive accounts as to how andwhy an individual provided inspiration ormotivation. We also take into account anindividual’s extracurricular activities, suchas community service, involvement withindustry-related organizations and associa-tions, and philanthropic activities. We alsoconsider how an individual leads his or herorganization, group, or team. We look forleaders who provide guidance and mentor-ship to colleagues inside their own compa-nies as well as to those beyond their corpo-rate landscape. We celebrate invididualswho are acting as change agents to improvethe industry’s performance and reputation.

Each year we strive to give you more per-sonal insights into the PharmaVOICE 100.As such, we asked our industry leaders to pro-vide us with the two adjectives that theybelieve best describe themselves. Hands

down the resounding consensus of responsesincluded passion and compassion, withhealthy doses of integrity, candor, and inno-vation thrown in.

These invididuals are indeed passionateabout the sectors they serve — pharma, bio-pharma, biotech, contract research, clinicalresearch and development, patient educa-tion, patient recruitment, advertising, tech-nology, and many others — as well as theoverall industry. They are committed todoing the right thing for the right reasons.

To make the issue easier to navigate, wehave divided the honorees into categories thatwe think best capture their skill sets andexpertise. Please note, however, that many ofthis year’s honorees could easily fit into sever-al of the following sections: commanders andchiefs, entrepreneurs, change agents, brandchampions, researchers & scientists, patientadvocates, technologists, and mentors.

I hope you enjoy getting to know thisdistinguished group as much as we did. With a special thanks to Cathy Liszewski forher design and to Kim Ribbink for writingthe profiles, and on behalf of the rest of edi-torial team of PharmaVOICE — DeniseMyshko, Robin Robinson, and CarolynGretton — I want to thank our 100 formaking this issue possible. We look forwardto many more inspiring conversations, andwe can’t wait to see who makes next year’slist. Submit your nomination for 2009 now!

Steve GERARD

Optimistic and energetic, Stephen Gerard doesn’t just liveeach day; he attacks it with passion and fire.

When Mr. Gerard founded TGaS Advisors, he envisioned anew path for pharma commercial operations and risked every-thing to get there. Now, just four years later, he is realizing hispioneering vision in a way that inspires others — both clientsand talent — to join him in the venture.

Mr. Gerard’s creative mind is always going a mile a minute.Where others think along the lines of static boxes on an orgchart, Mr. Gerard thinks in ecosystems and dynamic interrela-tionships.

With a mastery of details along with strategic vision, Mr.Gerard and his colleagues at TGaS are transforming the natureof management consulting from inside-out to outside-in byanswering the question they hear most often from clients: howdo other pharmaceutical companies do it?

To help companies reach their goals, Mr. Gerard has intro-duced collaborative peer-set benchmarking, in which clientsreceive fact-based insights, comparing their sales, marketing, and managed market support operations to a confidential, blinded peer-set.

Staff meetings at TGaS are occasions for Client Smile awardsin which employees are rewarded for going the extra mile. Mr.Gerard sets a tone that creates a pleasurable working environ-ment and a collaborative culture. When new hires join the com-pany, gift baskets are sent to their homes, welcoming the entirefamily, and employees are sent thank you notes for a job welldone.

An accomplished veteran of the pharma and supplier sides ofthe business, Mr. Gerard can view the industry from a variety ofperspectives and strives to constantly come up with new ideasfor developing more creative ways to provide client services.

Like most entrepreneurs, he has experienced his share of upsand downs. A defining moment for him was moving from afinance role at Schering-Plough to the field force and survivinga scary first week to be named sales rep of the year in 1991. Andhe gained a few “hard knock” lessons at drkoop.com, arriving,

as he puts it, six weeks late to the Internet party. Today atTGaS he is able to enjoy his hard work and feel pride in thecompany’s accomplishments, including having his companynamed to the INC 500 in 2008.

While Mr. Gerard demands a lot of his staff, he is at thesame time fair, supportive, and positive, and he has directlyimpacted and has helped grow the careers of many other indi-viduals who have gone on to have a positive impact on theindustry. And while he is driven if he believes in something,Mr. Gerard maintains his key characteristic is being funny. Ashe puts it, in the end “all this business stuff really does notmatter, so we might as well have some laughs along the way.”

GETTING PERSONAL Stephen Gerard founded TGaS Advisors

(tgasadvisors.com), East Norriton, Pa., in 2003. A 20-plus-year industry

veteran in finance, sales, management, marketing, science, and opera-

tions, Mr. Gerard honed his skills at Schering-Plough, where he held

positions in finance and sales; at IMS Health, where he was Managing

Director of the decision support group; at the Internet firm drkoop.com;

and at SimStar, where he was Chief Operating Officer.

Steve Gerard is constantly coming up with new ideas to provide more creative client servicesand dreaming of ways to make business better for clients, employees, and the industry itself.
