ACUPUNCTURE AWARENESS WEEK February 25th to March 3rd 2013Acupuncture Awareness Week is supported by the British Acupuncture Council and aims to help better inform people about the ancient practice of traditional acupuncture. With 2.3 million acupuncture treatments carried out each year, acupuncture is one of the most popular complementary therapies practised in the UK today.

This year the focus topic is sleep problems and insomnia.Sleep is vital. Without enough sleep we feel lethargic and unable to cope. That’s why sleep deprivation is often used in torture. Sleep is the time that the body’s systems repair the damage from a day’s activity, and replenishes our stores of energy to cope with the next day. A good night’s sleep should leave you feeling refreshed and raring to go.

For many of us in this modern world though, there is enormous emphasis on the use of the mind – there is a constant barrage of information coming at us all the time, which has to be attended to and assimilated. Now just think for a minute, how much time do you spend doing e-mail, checking Facebook, Tweeting, surfing the Internet, listening to music on your phone, PC, iPad or whatever device you favour – and how much time do you allow your mind to rest? – not doing any of this, or watching telly but just being quiet for a few moments – not much is it? Unless you can find an inner peace and stillness, even just for a few minutes, you will go to bed with your rational mind still buzzing with all this stimulation and no wonder you can’t get to sleep, or if you do your mind wakes you with thoughts that have to be dealt with.Of course is it not just lifestyle issues that cause sleep problems, there are many illnesses or injuries that can cause this, be it coughs and colds, pulmonary disorders, physical pain and discomfort, skin diseases, restless legs, snoring partners and so on. Then what you eat or drink can have an effect – alcohol or caffeine or rich food taken mid to late evening doesn’t help.

There are other clues as well such as waking at a particular time at night – Chinese Medicine has it that each hour is related to a particular internal organ, which gives a pointer to where we need to look for treatment – hands up all of those who wake between 1 and 3 am? Armed with 4,000 bags of chocolate, Southam Lions once again braved the weather and set out with Father Christmas and the Sleigh pulled by those fantastic Reindeer, Rudolph and Dancer to visit children all over the Southam area and the surrounding villages. This meant 14 separate expeditions, mostly at night – setting off at 5.30pm and returning usually at about 9.00pm, tired, wet and with aches and pains but suitably dulled by those kind souls who poured out generous amounts of alcohol and the occasional mince pie! In fact the Lions were live on BBC Radio Coventry & Warwickshire on the Thursday before the great day and the presenter thought that Father Christmas had already begun the celebrations! An awful accusation – but half an hour later then perhaps he was!! It was good to hear the recording some time afterwards and know that what was said actually made sense! We nearly lost one of our Lions one night since he slipped

into a deep ditch and it was only his mumblings that saved him! He walks with a bit of a limp now but it adds to his woeful reputation – good job we do a head count otherwise he might still be there! As you can tell we had a great time this year and the most important thing though is that we amassed over £4,500.00 and this will be split between the two charities we agreed to support – ZOE’S PLACE (a hospice for sick children – babies) and HELEN & DOUGLAS HOUSE (a hospice for teenage cancer sufferers). Southam Lions are so very grateful for the very generous donations collected over the days leading up to Christmas.

CALLING ALL DOG WALKERS TO HELP DOGS FOR THE DISABLEDRugby Rotary Club, Rugby Inner Wheel and Bilton Veterinary Centre are holding a 4km sponsored dog walk on Sunday 14th April in aid of Dogs for the Disabled. The walk starts in Horton Crescent between 10.00am and 12 noon.

Dogs For The Disabled is a pioneering charity that trains assistance dogs for adults and children with physical dis-abilities and families with a child with autism. The dogs can be trained the specific skills that a particular owner will need, such as opening and closing doors, emptying the washing machine, helping an owner to undress. They can also help children with daily physiotherapy routines. For autistic children the dog becomes a calming focus allowing the whole family to take part in a wider range of every -day activities that we would take for granted.

Labrador and golden retriever puppies start their career at

8 weeks of age. They spend a year living a normal family life with lots of socialising. They then go to the national centre at Banbury where they spend the next 6-8 months learning their skills. It costs £10,000 to train a puppy and each dog will cost the charity £18,000 throughout its’ lifetime. There are currently 257 dogs in working partnerships, 182 with adults and 75 with children. This year the charity needs £2.5m to maintain its’ services, all funding comes from voluntary donations.

These dogs make such an amazing difference to the lives of the people they assist. They give freedom and independence but in addition they also become a reason to go out. They open doors to friendships, hobbies, education and careers.

BLOXHAM SCHOOL ANNOUNCES NEW HEADMASTER FOR SEPTEMBER 2013 The Council of Governors of Bloxham School is delighted to announce that it has appointed Paul Sanderson to be the School’s new Headmaster commencing on 1 September 2013. Mr Sanderson will succeed Mark Allbrook who will retire in the Summer after 11 years of outstanding service to the school.

Mr Sanderson (40) is currently a Deputy Headteacher with responsibility for the curriculum in and out of the classrooms at Gordonstoun School in Scotland. He is married to Helen and they have three young children. He was educated at Banbridge Academy in Northern Ireland followed by a BSc (Hons) degree in Biological Science at the University of St Andrews. As a post graduate student he got his PGCE at Keble College, Oxford followed by a MEd in Educational Research at Jesus College, Cambridge.

Speaking with obvious delight at his appointment Paul commented:‘I am both thrilled and delighted to have been appointed the 13th Headmaster of Bloxham School. My wife, Helen and I, are very excited to be coming to a school that has students at the heart of its thinking. I admire that its roots are borne out of a Christian commitment to the community and that it has pupil well-being as its central focus. By affording young people the opportunities to develop, intellectually, spiritually, emotionally, physically and socially, it strives to educate the whole person in preparation for an ever changing and uncertain world. Mark Allbrook will leave me with a fine school, which is highly regarded and I will endeavour to build upon his industry to nurture and strengthen Bloxham’s position as a leading independent school.’Commenting on the announcement of his successor, Mark Allbrook said:‘I am confident that we are announcing the appointment of someone capable of both maintaining Bloxham’s strong traditions and also moving it forward.
