National Reconciliation Week

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to learn about our shared histories, cultures, and achievements, and to explore how each of us can contribute to achieving reconciliation in Australia. Reconciliation must live in the hearts, minds and actions of all Australians as we move forward, creating a nation strengthened by respectful relationships between the wider Australian community, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.

Our Reconciliation Week whole school assembly will be held on Thursday 27th May (Week 6) in the hall, starting at 10:00am. Our Cultural Group Dancers and Didge Group will be performing along with our Koori Choir. All parents and carers are most welcome to attend and stay for morning tea and yarn afterwards, in our Cultural Room.

Students will be encouraged to wear red, black and yellow to school on this day, for a gold coin donation. Red, black and yellow cupcakes will also be on sale for all students at first break, for $2.00 each. Our staff bake the cupcakes for this stall and the competition for the best decorated cupcake is fierce! Funds collected from these activities will go towards buying class sets of quality Aboriginal texts for our School Library.

Check In Assessments The past week our Year 4 and Year 6 students have been undertaking ‘Check-In’ Assessments for Numeracy and Reading, graded against their peers in other public schools in NSW. Our initial results are quite promising and we will publish these to the community in the coming weeks. Well done Year 4 and Year 6. Staff Development Day – John Fleming On Thursday 6 May our whole staff undertook Professional Learning with John Fleming, our well renowned Instructional Leader on Explicit Instruction. John has been responsible for improving the learning outcomes of many schools across the country. John has worked locally with Blue Haven Public School. John will be working with our school over the coming years as we endeavour to provide our students with the best opportunities in learning.

NAPLAN In May 2021 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by all students in Years 3 and 5. NAPLAN will assess the literacy and numeracy learning of students in all Australian schools. The results of the test will provide important information to schools about what each student can do and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement and will be able to compare their child’s performance against the national minimum standard. NAPLAN will be held at school in the weeks commencing 10th May and 17th May. Students will be completing NAPLAN online. The table below shows when each test will be completed during the test window. Week 4 Tuesday 11 May and Wednesday 12 May Year 3 Writing Reading Year 5 Writing Reading

Week 5 Wednesday 19 May and Thursday 20 May Year 3 Conventions of Language Numeracy

Tuesday 18 May and Wednesday 19 May Year 5 Conventions of Language Numeracy

Books in Homes Students in Kindergarten, Years 1 and 2 will be part of the Books in Homes program. Mingara have kindly sponsored almost 200 students to receive books as part of this initiative. Over the last 2 weeks students have selected 3 books of their own choice that they will be presented with at an assembly later on in the term. Each book will have the child’s name written inside and will be presented in a book bag. We thank Mingara for their generous donation and look forward to receiving our books.

Sue Densmore -Learning and Support Teacher

Morning Club In Week 5 the school will begin its morning club linked with the Smith Family. Learning Club provides a safe and supportive out-of-school learning environment where students can participate in activities that develop their academic and social skills. Volunteers from the community supported targeted students from K-6. In the future we are looking at opening this initiative up to more students.
