The Exam School Admissions Process

The Boston Public Schools (BPS) has three exam schools – Boston Latin Academy, Boston Latin School, and the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics & Science. Eligible students must currently be in grade 6 to apply for grade 7, or grade 8 to apply for grade 9 at all three exam schools. Students currently in grade 9 are eligible to apply for admission to the John D. O’Bryant School only. Boston’s exam schools accept and support all types of learners.

Application to the exam schools requires taking the ISEE, Boston residency, submission of grades, and ranking the schools in order of preference. There are a limited number of seats available in the exam schools. The admission score is determined by equally weighting the ISEE score and Grade Point Average (GPA) — each counts for 50%.

Please be sure to complete each of the following steps to complete the application process.

Step 1: Register for the ISEE (September)

Step 2: Submit a request for testing accommodations (for students with disabilities or limited English proficiency – September)

Step 3: Verify Residency (Non-BPS students only – October)

Step 4: Take the ISEE (November)

Step 5: Submit exam school ranking form and grades ( January)

Step 6: Receive notification of admissions decision (March)

Each of the steps are outlined in the next section. Please read through each of them and the remainder of the guide to ensure you complete each step needed to apply.

If you have questions about the Boston Exam Schools, the admission process, the residency policy, or require general assistance, please contact:

Exam School AdmissionsTel: 617-635-9512Email: [email protected]: www.bostonpublicschools.org/exam

The Exam School Admissions Process

Step 1: Register for the Independent School Entrance Exam (September)Every student interested in attending one of the Boston Public Schools’ exam schools must register to take the Independent School Entrance Exam (ISEE).

Eligibility: Students must be enrolled in grades 6, 8, or 9 to register for the ISEE. Students in grade 9 will be applying for entrance at the John D. O’Bryant School of Mathematics & Science as this is the only exam school that accepts new 10th grade students.

How to Register: Students can only take the ISEE once between August and November. Families that are interested in an exam school may take the test for free through the Boston Public Schools or can take the test independently by registering for testing at a national site (fees apply). Even if a student has not determined whether s/he wants to attend an exam school, the family may want to register the student for the exam to keep all options open.

Take the Test with BPS:Families seeking to take the test through BPS must register for the test by September 29, 2017. The Boston Public Schools offers testing at 8 sites across the city (see page 19 for a list of BPS test sites). Registration with BPS can be done in two ways:

Online: Visit www.bostonpublicschools.org/exam to register by September 29, 2017. Online registration is the best option for families seeking to get quick and up-to-date information about their status and progress in exam school admissions process.

Paper: Paper test registration materials will be available the second week of September at all Boston area schools, BPS Welcome Centers and all Boston Public Library branches.

Testing at a National SiteFamilies applying to private and independent schools, as well as the Boston exam schools, are encouraged to register for a national test administration. Please visit www.iseetest.org or contact 1-800-446-0320. Please note that the national test administration includes an essay portion (the BPS test administration does not include the essay.)

Families registering for testing at a national site are responsible for the test fee and must schedule for a test date no later than Saturday, November 18, 2017 in order to ensure eligibility for an exam school. To ensure that the BPS receives the ISEE results, families must provide school code 888888, when registering for

a national test. Test scores must be received by the BPS by Friday, December 8, 2017. Students taking the national test will be able to receive a copy of their test scores two weeks after the test date.

Even if your child is taking a national test, we encourage families to register online with BPS at www.bostonpublicschools.org/exam to get quick and up-to-date information about the admissions process.

Non-BPS students who are taking the national test are still required to complete the residency verification process within the timeline described in Step 3.

Step 2: Submit Accommodations Request (September)Eligibility: Students with a disability or limited English proficiency may be eligible for test accommodations. Accommodations will only be provided with a pre-approved request. Students cannot request accommodations on site the day of the test. The Exam School Admissions Process

Taking the Make-up Test: The make-up test date is for students who were unable to attend the first Saturday test administration due to serious illness, injury, family crisis, or missed the registration period in September. Walk-in registration will be available at the November 18, 2017 test administration at Boston Latin School, located at 78 Avenue Louis Pasteur, Boston, MA 02115. Students will be able to walk into the test center with the required documents and register on site.

Non-BPS students who did not complete the residency verification process before November 4th are NOT eligible to take this test. Students who take the exam on November 4th may not take the make-up test, regardless of circumstances that might have affected his/her performance. The Boston Public Schools will not retest a student under any circumstances after November 18, 2017.

Getting ISEE Results:Scores will be reported automatically to Boston Public Schools for students who test at a BPS site. Students taking the ISEE with Boston Public Schools have the option of sending a score report to six additional ERB member schools. There is a $105 fee for this service, and scores will not be reported until January. Please refer to the last page of this booklet for the request form.

Step 5: Rank Exam School Choices & Submit Grades ( January)

BPS distributes the Candidate Release Forms in early January to collect student grades and their ranking of exam school choices (if not already indicated on the online form).

Student attending an unlisted school (code 8888) or being home-schooled (code 8554) will receive the request form and instructions by mail at the listed parent/guardian’s home address.

Grade changes will not be accepted after exam school invitations are released in March.

16

The Exam School Admissions Process

Step 6: Notification (March)Admission decisions will be sent to families in mid-March to the address and parent email address on file. Admission decisions are final and the exam schools do not have wait lists. BPS does not offer an appeal process since admission is strictly based on student academic performance.

Criteria for admission: The admission score is determined by equally weighting the ISEE score and Grade Point Average (GPA) — each counts for 50%.

• Each section of the ISEE is equally weighted.• The GPA is based on grades or marks in ELA/English and

Mathematics from the previous school year (grade 5 or 7) and from the first two marking periods of the current year. Each grade/mark is considered equally.

• For students with grade 5 academic records from the Boston Public Schools, the Spring term marks will be used to calculate the GPA.

• For students applying to grade 10 at the John O’Bryant School, only the current year marks will be considered.

Test PreparationThe Educational Records Bureau (ERB) administers the ISEE nationally and with the Boston Public Schools for exam school entrance. ERB understands the value and desire for parents and students to “see” the types of questions that will be presented on each level of the test. ERB works to ensure that it as fair as possible for all families to gain access to the same information preparing students for the test. ERB is pleased to offer a preparation book for each level FREE of charge when downloaded from the website www.iseetest.org. Preparation books may also be purchased in a hard copy format for $20 each.*

Each book includes level-specific background information about the ISEE test and experience, sample questions, a full-length practice test, scoring information. Please understand that these books are not training books for exam strategies, and they are not a shortcut to higher scores. The goal of these books is to help families understand the format of the test being taking, the directions given, the types of test items, and the answer sheet used.

While other companies claim to have ISEE preparation books, these books are the only books authorized and approved by ERB. The list of available preparation books includes:

What to Expect on the ISEE – Middle Level (Applicants to Grades 7 & 8)

What to Expect on the ISEE – Upper Level (Applicants to Grades 9-12)

* Please note that if you choose to order the preparation book the cost of $20 includes shipping and handling in the United States. The book is sent through the U.S. Postal Service using Priority Mail. Please allow 5-7 business days for delivery upon receipt of your order. If you live outside the United States, please call 1-800-446-0320 or 919-956-8524 for the international shipping cost and delivery time. You may order the book by calling 1-800-446-0320 or 919-956-8524, or online at www.iseetest.org. If you choose to download the book for free and print it yourself, the complete book is 140 pages in length.
