Este livro foi montado pensando em dar um método para quem quer aprender a ler inglês. Você mesmo irá escolher os textos que estudará – textos que você quer ler, assuntos que gosta!

No entanto, no apêndice deste livro, já temos uma seleção de textos (que são os exercícios) para facilitar o trabalho e servir como exemplo, com um foco para os alunos de Sri Chinmoy que queiram aprender a ler a sua obra. Independentemente de conhecer a obra de Sri Chinmoy, se você gostar dos escritos aqui, já pode começar por eles.

Como funciona o método – versão resumida

1) Escolha um assunto que você ama, um texto que realmente queira ler! Faça uma cópia para rabiscar, tenha outra que não será riscada e, quiser, encontre a tradução do livro/texto para comparar.

2) Ao ler, faça anotações na página, com o significado das palavras que consultou no dicionário, etc. Se não compreender mesmo usando o dicionário, ou sinta que não compreendeu a nuance da frase, leia a tradução em português (nos exemplos deste livro já colocamos a tradução e o original juntos). Se não entender 100%, não tem problema, contanto que compreenda o significado em geral.

3) Depois, leia o texto com espaçamento normal, tentando lembrar das palavras que aprendeu. Se esqueceu de alguma, volte no texto com as suas anotações e relembre o significado. Retorne ao texto

sem anotações e continue a leitura. De novo, não precisa ser 100% - contanto que compreenda o significado geral, isso basta.

4) Repita essa mesma leitura, no início todos os dias, depois a cada 3 dias, e depois a cada semana, até ter assimilado todas as palavras e expressões e possa ler o texto naturalmente.

5) Inclua novos textos deste livro à sua rotina diária à medida que os textos que já estudou se tornaram mais rápidos de se ler.

6) A consistência é o mais importante. Se vai estudar 30 minutos por dia, estude todos os dias 30 minutos, durante um ano. Se vai estudar uma hora por dia, estude uma hora por dia, durante um ano. Nos capítulos seguintes vou explicar a teoria por traz disso.

7) Tente usar o seu coração quando estiver aprendendo. Não só a mente, mas também o coração. Sinta-se feliz e grato. Tente se identificar com a língua inglesa, sinta que ela é parte de você, e você dela.

Consistência é uma das chaves. Interesse é outra. Foi assim que eu aprendi a ler inglês. Usando o dicionário e esforço. A língua inglesa é generosa e se deixa aprender facilmente por quem tem ambos.

Com as informações do capítulo anterior, você já pode aprender a ler inglês. Agora, para quem quer saber um pouco mais como o método funciona, preparei este capítulo.

Segue a minha forma para quem quer aprender inglês. Fiz bem resumida, e cada frase escrita aqui tem valor no processo de aprendizado. Foi assim que eu aprendi, mas levei mais tempo, pois não tinha essas dicas. Eu só tinha vontade. Queria ler, mas não conseguia. Foi um esforço bruto de repetição, sem nenhum conhecimento prévio e nenhuma facilidade natural, e sem nenhum método para me orientar. Você fará o mesmo esforço de repetição, mas, com o método, o seu esforço renderá frutos mais cedo. Você vai ler algo que gosta, sentindo-se feliz e vendo a cada semana como o seu inglês está melhorando!

1) Leia algo que você ama!

Essa é a primeira coisa que você precisa se preocupar ao começar a aprender!

Leia sobre algo que você ama, adora, gosta, tem interesse, tem curiosidade. Se você quiser aprender inglês só para anotar no currículo, será um processo difícil. Mas se tiver um interesse real em saber o significado de algo que está escrito em inglês, será bem mais fácil!

Dois exercícios:

1) O nome do seu pai e da sua mãe, você lembra deles porque teve que se esforçar muitos anos para decorar – ou porque você os valoriza muito?

2) Imagine-se, sem fome, deitado na cama, dentro das cobertas, após dormir muitas horas. Que tal ir até a geladeira para tomar uma água de coco gelada ou um sorvete? Agora, imagine-se chegando em casa com fome, depois de fazer muito exercício físico num dia de verão. Que tal ir até a geladeira para tomar uma água de coco gelada ou um sorvete?

Viu só? O seu interesse no tema fará com que se inspire a estudar e fará com que realmente assimile aquilo com que tiver contato.

2) Leia algo que seja simples! Além de ser algo que você gosta, tem que ser algo que

não seja complexo demais. Tente ler algo que seja um pouco difícil para você, mas não muito.

Por exemplo, numa frase com dez palavras, se não entender uma ou duas, esse é um bom ponto de partida. Se de dez palavras, você não entender sete, talvez esse tipo de texto seja muito complicado para você.

Você pode usar artifícios como histórias em quadrinhos (pois os desenhos ajudam a compreender o texto) ou ler livros em inglês cuja tradução você já tenha lido antes (você já conhece a história, então agora está aprendendo o inglês, e não o inglês e a história ao mesmo tempo)

3) A perfeição é inimiga da velocidade!!!

A perfeição é inimiga da velocidade. O importante é entender. Não precisa entender 100%. Você vai continuar melhorando contanto que comece. Se conseguir entender a ideia geral, siga em frente sentindo que compreendeu o significado.

4) Ler, Escrever, Ouvir, Falar Inglês

Aprenda só a ler. Estamos falando de um ano com um volume pequeno de estudo em horários vagos. O inglês é fácil e similar ao português, e muitas vezes a leitura é a parte mais útil da língua inglesa. Ler os livros de Sri Chinmoy para os seus alunos é provavelmente o mais importante uso da língua inglesa. Sabendo ler, depois você aprende a falar e escrever bem mais rápido. Se não souber o significado da palavra, nunca irá usá-la numa conversa, nunca irá entendê-la se a ouvir, e nunca conseguirá escrevê-la num texto. Então, para o nosso caso particular, faremos primeiro a leitura. (Depois você vai juntar tudo e melhorar a sua leitura junto com a fala, audição e escrita).

5) Gramática E Estrutura Das Frases Do Inglês

Uma boa notícia é que, falando de línguas mundiais, o português e o inglês são praticamente idênticos. A gramática e estrutura de frases do inglês é quase igual à do português para quem quer ler e compreender um texto. Normalmente, bem mais simples. Então a gente já conhece o grosso da gramática e estrutura do inglês simplesmente por termos nascido no Brasil. Com o inglês já que aprendemos na escola, sabendo o tempo verbal (passado: “…-ed”, futuro “will …”, etc, que são iguais no português também), já dá pra entender quase tudo.

6) Vocabulário De Língua Inglesa

Moleza. O inglês possui muitas palavras que vieram do latim. O português também. Então já sabemos uma boa parte do vocabulário do inglês simplesmente por termos nascido no Brasil. Por exemplo: meditação é meditation. Quer mais fácil que isso?

Palavras desconhecidas. O resto das palavras podemos procurar no dicionário quando as encontrarmos. Cada palavra tem mais de um significado, e, ao passar por elas várias vezes nos textos, entenderemos naturalmente qual o significado mais natural no caso.

Dica: ponha orelhas (A, B, C, D, …Z) no seu dicionário para economizar tempo nas buscas. Dica auxiliar: imprima este livro e tenha um dicionário físico, impresso. É um fato que aprender qualquer coisa no computador é mais difícil que num livro de papel.

Curioso: se você acha difícil procurar palavras no dicionário, tente aprender japonês e procurar alguma palavra num dicionário de japonês, por exemplo 綺麗. Provavelmente vai lhe custar uma hora para aprender como usar um dicionário de japonês, e você se deparará com várias pronúncias diferentes para ela (sem saber qual usar), além de duas formas de escrever奇麗 e綺麗. Alguns significados possíveis são: limpo, transparente, belo,

organizado, inteiramente, gracioso, reluzente, bem educado, justo, puro. A não ser que a palavra faça parte de um nome de pessoa, onde o significado muda de novo, a pronúncia muda de novo e você precisa comprar um dicionário só de nomes para aprender a ler nomes japoneses, que mudam de leitura e significado depois de algumas décadas (por exemplo, o nome de alguém que nasceu em 1950 pode estar com uma leitura errada num dicionário editado em 2000). Que tal – inglês é fácil, né?

Importante: memorizando o vocabulário. Cada vez que procurar uma palavra desconhecida, escreva ela junto com um dos significados. No dia seguinte, é imprescindível você ir ler o original sem anotações e tentar lembrar do significado em inglês. Se você lembrar vários dias seguidos do significado, quer dizer que aprendeu a palavra. Se não lembrar, quer dizer que tem que olhar nas suas anotações para reaprender e continuar o processo de tentar lembrar por mais dias. Continue o processo com essa palavra até conseguir lembrar sem consultar o significado. Quando lembrar dela com facilidade, você não precisa mais fazer isso e terá mais tempo para aprender outras palavras. Se não conseguir aprender uma palavra de jeito nenhum, simplesmente faça de conta que ela não existe por um tempo.

Paciência até o “ponto de virada”. No começo de qualquer projeto, não vemos os resultados. Eles levam tempo, mas depois começam a vir com uma velocidade cada vez mais rápida. Quando se der conta, estará “mais para lá do que para cá”, ou seja, estará sabendo mais inglês do que não sabendo, o que quer dizer que não tem mais volta – você aprendeu inglês.

7) Fala, Audição E Escrita

Mesmo com o objetivo sendo aprender a ler, se você tiver contato frequente (não digo estudar, mas sim estar no contexto do inglês), isso vai ajudar a assimilar o que estudou.

Aprendendo a falar, ouvir e escrever. Você vai melhorar essas capacidades quando tiver vocabulário suficiente e bem consolidado. Aí o processo é o mesmo que com a leitura. Falar frases, escrever frases, ouvir frases, corrigir, repetir.

Imersão. Temos a sorte de que quase tudo o que procuramos, livros, manuais, filmes, etc, está em inglês. Aproveite para ir aprendendo a língua enquanto faz outras atividades. Configure seus equipamentos, telefone, computador, livros, filmes, etc, sempre para o inglês. Isso é importante para você aprender a saber as nuances de cada palavra. Por exemplo, em português dizemos por exemplo que “algo é bonito”, mas também reclamamos, “que bonito, heim!?” Você aprende a diferenciar com a vivência no idioma.

Pronúncia. Diferente do português, a pronúncia das palavras do inglês é bem irregular, e tem diversas formas de pronunciar a mesma palavra de acordo com a região do mundo onde você está. Falando de pronúncia básica, você vai aprendendo ao ouvir os outros e se corrigir.

8) Tempo Necessário Para Aprender

Menos de 1 ano. Para aprender em particular a ler a língua inglesa, que é um idioma dentre os mais fáceis do mundo (lembro de uma gravação de Sri Chinmoy dizendo algo como “the English language is generous.”), em particular para quem já fala português, imagino que o tempo levado vai ser algo menor do que ano se você se esforçar de verdade. Se não se esforçar, aí você vai multiplicando: 5 anos, 15 anos, mas provavelmente você já vai ter desistido antes.

Como não desistir. Coloque como uma prioridade na vida e se dedique. Quanto mais estudar, mais progresso fará e menor será a chance de desistir no meio do caminho. Quando se der conta, estará “mais para lá do que para cá”, ou seja, estará sabendo mais inglês do que não sabendo, o que quer dizer que não tem mais volta.

England practically destroyed India, true, but England did give a gift to India for which India will remain eternally, eternally, eternally grateful to England and that gift is the English language. The English language is India's matchless treasure. If an Indian in India goes 60 or 80 miles from his home, he may find people who speak his own dialect, but a few words will be different. If he goes 200 miles away, he will not be able to understand anything! Does a Bengali understand even one word of Telegu? Does a Tamil know even one word of Bengali? And even our Bengali language has so many dialects. I come from Chittagong. There are so many words that I use which are not to be found in any Bengali dictionary. Calcutta Bengalis will laugh at our Chittagong dialect! So in that way, the English language has saved us. It has given us a common language to unite us on a national level and, on the international level, it has enabled us to participate in the international community.

What Vivekananda, as a boy, despised and obstinately refused to learn, proved, in his glorious youth, a mighty instrument of victory in his hands. Apart from his towering spiritual personality, his hold on the English tongue facilitated his hold on the mind, heart and soul of East and West. His obstinacy failed to reverse God’s Will, which was shaping his destiny.

“We shall be underestimating the significance of the English language in India if we think that it is only a valuable means of promoting our political, economic and technological interests in the democratic world. English is, above all, an immensely cultural asset. It will be no exaggeration to say that by virtue of the English language alone India stands in the vanguard of the political history of mankind.

As each individual has a distinct place to fill in the world, even so every language has an important role. And it has been an established fact that no other European tongue has so much power of assimilating elements from foreign languages as does the English language.

The English language was brought into Britain by Teutonic invaders. These invaders were of three types: Jutes, Saxons and Angles. Modern English has undergone a considerable change. It is no more the language brought into Britain by the Saxons and the Angles.

Grimm, a German linguist, writes in his famous book On the Origin of Languagesthat “English possesses a veritable power of expression such as perhaps never stood at the command of any other language of men. Its highly spiritual genius and wonderfully happy development and condition have resulted from a surprisingly intimate union of the two noblest languages in modern Europe, the Teutonic and the Roman.”

Not only in his boyhood, but also in the prime of his youth, while his feet were touching the alien shores, Vivekananda’s ruthless contempt for England was almost unbelievable. As regards the English national life, a strong suspicion was then haunting his mind.

To quote him: “No one ever landed on English soil with more hatred in his heart for a race than I did for the English.” But with what result? He had to revise his feeling overnight. In the following lines we shall observe his excessive love for England disclosed by himself before a multitude of people at Calcutta:

“There is none among you here present, my brothers, who loves the English people more that I do now.” We may as well ask him why and how could the English have won his heart? His immediate reply is: “The more I lived among them, saw how the machine was working — the English national life — and mixed with them, I found where the heartbeat of the nation was, and the more I love them.”

Como aprender inglês

Question: What is the quickest way to learn the language of a different country?

Sri Chinmoy: The quickest way to learn the language of a different country is to love the soul of that particular country. Then you have to love the heart of that country and finally you have to love the consciousness of that country. When the consciousness, heart and soul of the country are loved, immediately the outer vehicle of the country — which is language — tries to befriend the student who wants to learn it.

When I was about four years old, my eldest sister, Arpita, saw that I had no interest in learning the letters of the Bengali alphabet. So she began to teach me the letters of the English alphabet. I liked them very much, but when my mother discovered what Arpita was teaching me, she was so displeased. She wanted me to learn my mother tongue first. She did not care for the English language at all, although my father had a very good command of English, and his immediate bosses were all Englishmen.

There are two reasons why most of my songs are written in Bengali. One reason is that I am a Bengali and I know Bengali infinitely better than I know English. But if I am in a divine mood, I will call this a silly reason. The real reason is that the English language, although we say it has tremendous majesty, at the same time has become the commercial language. If you want to be generous, you can say it has become the universal language. The English language undoubtedly has universal appeal on the practical plane, but it does not have that universal appeal on the inner plane, the spiritual plane, whereas Bengali has it. Italian also has the soul’s approach. We can say it has a very free access, like Bengali, to the soul. But the English language does not have this. Of course, if somebody has written an exceptionally soulful prayer or poem, these soulful words will have an approach to the soul’s reality. But on the whole the language does not have an immediate appeal to the soul. It will appeal to our mind, to our vital and to our aspiring physical.

The Bengali language outwardly is sweeter, much sweeter, than the English language. It has to its credit an inner reality, let us say a divine reality, a very subtle, haunting reality which the English language, unfortunately, lacks. The English language has many, many good qualities, but the immediate inner approach to

the soul, to the inner reality, the sweetness and the heart quality of oneness you don’t get in English as immediately or as powerfully as you get it in Bengali. This is my yogic reason.

Right now, believe it or not, English comes to me more freely than Bengali… People say that thoughts always come in the mother tongue first, even when you know quite a few languages. I have heard this many times. In my case, this was true many years ago. But for the last six or seven years when I write, give talks or answer questions, I never, never think in Bengali. I don’t get the words or ideas in Bengali first and then immediately translate them. Everything comes to me directly in English. It may be incorrect, it may be imperfect English, but the ideas and words definitely come to me in English.

… English has its own strengths in many ways … When it is a matter of soulful reality existence, Bengali far surpasses English. But when it is for universal appeal, or on the practical plane, the commercial plane, the physical plane, vital plane and mental plane, English undoubtedly has a wider scope.

Deixamos aqui material técnico-científico de professores e teóricos, com suas referências, caso tenha interesse em saber de onde vem a fundamentação do método.

Um mini histórico do aprendizado de línguas

Tradução-gramática (século XVIII a XX): a linguagem é um mero conhecimento estrutural, apoiado na língua nativa do aprendiz.

Audiolingual (Skinner, 1940-1960): enfatiza a linguagem

falada, utiliza a memorização e também prática e improviso.

Natural-comunicativa (Noam Chomsky, Vigotsky,

Piaget, Krashen, etc., 1950-): linguagem é criatividade (não necessariamente memorizada) e funda-se em fenômenos universais da mente humana presentes em todas as línguas. O eixo da abordagem é ter o ensinamento carismático associado à participação ativa do leitor, utilizando o conteúdo aprendido no seu contexto como ser humano. Também indicou uma mudança no sentido da leitura e escrita serem um complemento da fala, além de que o texto traz uma interação da informação do texto com a realidade e experiências do leitor.

Estudar gramática?

Na visão de Stephen Krashen, a análise das complexidades da língua, a formulação de regras e o estudo de suas exceções não se constituem em ensino e aprendizado que produzam proficiência comunicativa, mas apenas "apreciação" da língua, ou, simplesmente, linguística.

O que estudar então? – não estude, adquira uma língua

De acordo com a teoria de Stephen Krashen, acquisition é responsável pelo entendimento e pela capacidade de comunicação criativa: habilidades desenvolvidas subconscientemente. Isto ocorre através da familiarização com a característica fonética da língua, sua estruturação de frases, seu vocabulário, tudo decorrente de situações reais, bem como pela descoberta e assimilação de diferenças culturais e pela aceitação e adaptação à nova cultura.

Learning depende de esforço intelectual e procura produzir conhecimento consciente a respeito da estrutura da língua e de suas irregularidades, e preconiza a memorização de vocabulário fora de situações reais. Este conhecimento atua na função de monitoramento da fala. Entretanto, o efeito deste monitoramento sobre a performance da pessoa, depende muito do perfil psicológico de cada um. Pessoas que tendem à introversão, à falta de autoconfiança, ou ao perfeccionismo, pouco se beneficiarão de um conhecimento da estrutura da língua e de suas irregularidades. Pelo contrário, no caso de línguas com alto grau de irregularidade

(como o inglês), poderão desenvolver um bloqueio que compromete a espontaneidade devido à consciência da alta probabilidade de cometerem erros.

Comprehensible input – linguagem inteligível – é o elemento chave para que ocorra a assimilação do idioma. Linguagem inteligível é aquela que se situa num nível ligeiramente acima do nível de proficiência do aprendiz. É a linguagem que ele não conseguiria produzir mas que ainda consegue entender. Vai além da simples escolha de vocabulário. Pressupõe contextualização, explicação, uso de recursos visuais, linguagem corporal, negociação de significados e recolocação de pontos obscuros em outras palavras. As ideias efetivamente transmitidas constituem a experiência de aprendizado.

O que é talento para línguas? Alguns dos possíveis indicadores de talento. Formação linguística: Outro fator de peso é a formação linguística da pessoa, isto é, o grau de semelhança que a L1 (língua materna) do aluno tem com a L2 (língua-alvo). A semelhança linguística normalmente vem acompanhada de semelhança cultural. Mesmo brasileiros demonstram para a língua inglesa uma facilidade muito superior a japoneses e chineses, por exemplo. Independência: O pleno desenvolvimento da competência na língua estrangeira ocorre quando o aprendiz, além de ser movido por um interesse ou necessidade pessoal, assume o controle de seu próprio destino neste processo, adquire consciência de suas habilidades e de suas limitações, e desenvolve uma estratégia que consegue tirar vantagem de suas habilidades e compensar suas limitações. Portanto, independência em relação a professores e programas é, no plano psicológico, um elemento fundamental. Tempo de dedicação e grau de envolvimento: Logicamente, quanto mais tempo for dedicado ao contato com a língua estrangeira, tanto maior será o grau de assimilação. Não só o tempo de contato, entretanto, mas também o grau de envolvimento afetivo e psicológico por ocasião do contato, terá influência decisiva. Por exemplo, se o contato for com a língua falada, se o aluno estiver conversando com algum estrangeiro, quanto maior o envolvimento afetivo com essa pessoa, ou quanto maior o grau de interesse ou de importância da conversa, tanto melhor a assimilação. Many, many years ago in China there lived a king who was always

afraid of losing his prestige. The king thought that if his subjects had more

information, knowledge or wisdom than he did, then they would not bow to

thought nobody would be able to surpass him in information, knowledge or

wisdom. O God, there were some scholars who had learned by heart some

important books and who had also hidden their books. The king was very

happy that others would become fools, and the scholars were so happy that

they had made a fool of the king. They became even greater scholars than

before because they learned many things by heart and also because they had

kept the really good books in hiding. It is because of these great scholars that

Laotzu’s and others’ works are still available in China.

O Rei Tolo Da China

Há muitos, muitos anos atrás, existia um rei na China o qual

sempre temia perder o seu prestígio. Imaginou que se, caso seus súditos

tivessem mais informação, conhecimento ou sabedoria do que ele, eles não se

curvariam a ele e nem o obedeceriam. Então pediu aos seus ministros que

incinerassem todos os livros que haviam nas escolas, nas bibliotecas e em

todo lugar do reino. Ele não queria que ninguém lesse. Os ministros

executaram as ordens dele e todos os livros foram reduzidos a cinzas. O rei

então ficou muito, muito feliz, porque pensava que ninguém seria capaz de

ultrapassá-lo em informação, conhecimento ou sabedoria. Entretanto, Ó

Deus, alguns eruditos aprenderam de cor e também esconderam certos

livros importantes. O rei ficou muito feliz porque os outros se tornariam

tolos, e os estudiosos estavam muito felizes pois fizeram do rei um tolo.

Tornaram-se ainda maiores eruditos, porque aprenderam muitas coisas de

cor e também por terem escondido os melhores livros. É devido a esses

grandes eruditos que as obras de Laotzu e de outros ainda são encontradas

na China.

The thief’s new profession

There was once a thief who used to commit theft every night. His

wife was an honest woman. She would beg her husband not to commit theft.

But her husband wouldn’t listen, so she was miserable. Like this it went on

for years.

At times the thief used to be caught. Surprisingly enough, his wife

would outwardly show no sadness. She used to say that he deserved to be

caught; he deserved to be punished. But inwardly she always felt sad and

miserable. After all, he was her husband. But he would never, never listen to

her when she asked him not to steal. He would tell her, “If you really do not

want me to steal, then why do you keep taking my money?”

She would say, “What am I going to do? I take very little money

from you, next to nothing, and it is only for my necessities. But I don’t want

you to do this kind of work. You can easily find some other profession. I am

a village woman; otherwise, I myself would have found work. But now I have

made a decision. If you continue stealing, I will go out and work. If I go out

and work, then you will be embarrassed! You will be ashamed that your wife

has gone out to work.”

In India women don’t usually work. It is beneath the dignity of the

husbands to send their wives out to work. So when his wife threatened him

in this way, the husband told her that he would stop stealing. The wife

believed him because he started staying home at night. Previously he used to

steal only at night, and now he was staying home at night. He told his wife

that during the day he took jobs here and there and was making money. But

he was actually stealing during the day and hiding all his stolen goods in a

room that he had rented. The thief amassed lots of things in his rented

room. But the wife thought that he had turned over a new leaf and become a

good and honest man.

O God, one day he came to his rented room with something he had

stolen and got the shock of his life. All the things that he had stolen over the

months had been taken by some other thieves. He came home and cried and

cried and cried. His wife asked him, “Why are you crying? Why are you

crying? Has your boss fired you or has anything gone wrong today?”

The husband wouldn’t tell her. She said, “Am I not your wife? Can

you not tell me what is wrong with you?”

Finally he told her the story. He admitted that he hadn’t stopped

stealing. He had only lied to her. He had stolen thousands of rupees’ worth

of things, and now they were all stolen by some other thieves. He was so sad

and miserable.

His wife said, “Now look, you are crying for things that were not

even your own hard-earned possessions. You went somewhere and in a few

minutes’ time you stole things, and now you are miserable that they have

been stolen from you. But look how hard the actual owners had to work to

buy these things! It took them weeks and months of hard work to earn

enough money to buy these expensive things. They saved money from their

salaries for months. So if you feel sad now, think how much sadder the

actual owners must have felt when their things were stolen.”

The husband said, “This time I am telling you the absolute truth: I

am not going to steal anymore. I will get a regular job so that I can make you

happy and also make myself happy. Stealing is not only an embarrassing

task; at times it is also very dangerous. I want to be worthy of you. You are a

very honest wife. I want to be as good as you are. I am giving up stealing, this

time for good.”

A Nova Profissão Do Ladrão

Era uma vez um ladrão que cometia furtos diariamente. Sua

esposa era uma mulher honesta, e implorava a seu marido que não mais

roubasse. Mas ele não a escutava e ela se sentia muito triste. E assim foi por

anos a fio.

Às vezes o ladrão era pego. Surpreendentemente, sua esposa

não demonstrava tristeza alguma, e costumava dizer que ele merecia ser

pego, que merecia ser punido. Entretanto, interiormente ela sempre ficava

triste e desconsolada. Afinal, era o seu esposo. Mas ele nunca, nunca a ouvia

quando ela pedia a ele que parasse de roubar. A resposta era: “Se você de fato

não quer que eu roube, então por que continua aceitando o meu dinheiro?”

E ela dizia: “O que farei? Aceito muito pouco do seu dinheiro,

quase nada, e apenas para as minhas necessidades. Mas não quero que tenha

esse tipo de trabalho. Pode facilmente encontrar alguma outra profissão. Eu

sou uma mulher da vila; senão já teria encontrado trabalho. Mas agora tomei

uma decisão. Se você continuar roubando eu começarei a trabalhar fora. E

você ficará envergonhado. Terá vergonha por sua esposa estar trabalhando

fora.”

Na Índia, normalmente as mulheres não trabalham fora de

casa. Seria indigno por parte dos maridos que suas esposas trabalhassem

dessa forma. Portanto, quando a esposa do ladrão o ameaçou, ele disse que

estaria deixando de roubar. E ela acreditou nele, pois agora ele ficava em casa

durante a noite. Antes, durante a noite ele roubava, mas agora ele ficava em

casa. O marido contou à esposa que durante o dia ele fazia uns trabalhos aqui

e ali, assim ganhando dinheiro. Mas, na verdade ele furtava durante o dia e

escondia tudo num quarto que tinha alugado. E já havia juntado muitas

coisas nesse quarto. Todavia, a esposa pensava que ele tinha começado a

escrever uma nova página na vida e se tornado um homem bom e honesto.

Deus meu, um dia ele retornou ao quarto alugado com algo

mais que tinha acabado de roubar e teve o choque de sua vida: todas as coisas

que tinha roubado durante meses foram levadas por outros ladrões. Então

ele voltou para casa e chorou, chorou e chorou. A esposa indagou:

“Por que está chorando? Por que está chorando? O seu chefe o

demitiu ou algo de errado aconteceu hoje?”

Mas seu esposo não respondia. Ela disse: “Não sou eu sua

esposa? Você não pode me dizer o que há de errado com você?”

Por fim ele contou a história. Adimitiu que não havia parado

de roubar e que tudo o que contara era mentira. Contou que furtou coisas

que valiam milhares de rúpias, e que tudo tinha sido levado por outros

ladrões. Ele estava muito triste e desconsolado.

A esposa disse a ele: “Agora veja, está chorando por coisas que

não eram nem mesmo fruto do seu trabalho árduo. Em alguns poucos

minutos roubava alguma coisa, e agora está triste porque alguém as roubou

de você. Veja quão duramente trabalharam os donos verdadeiros para que

conseguissem tais coisas! Juntaram dinheiro por semanas e meses para poder

comprar tais coisas valiosas. Por meses economizaram de seus salários.

Então, se você agora se sente triste, imagine quanto mais tristes ficaram os

verdadeiros donos quando suas coisas foram roubadas.”

O esposo disse: “Desta vez lhe conto a verdade última: não

mais roubarei. Terei um emprego certo para que possa fazê-la feliz e a mim

também. O furto não é apenas uma tarefa vergonhosa; às vezes é também

perigosa. Eu desejo ser digno de você. Você é uma esposa muito honesta.

Quero ser tão bondoso quanto você. Estou desistindo de roubar, e desta vez

para sempre.”

The fool tries to become wise

In a certain village there lived a stupid fellow. Everybody ridiculed

him and he felt miserable. Since he was in his teens, he went to school, and in

the class all the other students made fun of him. Even children who were in

lower grades cut jokes at his expense. All the time they made fun of him, and

he used to feel miserable. But what could he do? Only the teachers didn’t

ridicule him. They were wise and sympathetic and they showed him utmost

compassion and affection. There was also another reason why they were so

kind to him. He came of a very rich family. His father and sister were well-

educated and his mother had a very big heart.

One day he said to his father, “Father, I know you are very wise.

Although I am your son, I am not wise. I am so sorry. Please tell me how I

can be wise like you.”

His father said, “Always listen to me. If you listen to me, then

everybody will think that you are wise. Now, do one thing. Still you have not

learned how to make calculations. When you have to add or subtract, you

make mistakes. So listen to me. In our family you have your mother, your

father, yourself and your sister. If I say that your mother is the first member

of the family, your sister is the second member of the family, you are the

third member of the family and I am the fourth member, how many

members are we?

The son said, “Four!”

The father continued, “Right, we are four! Don’t say five or six or

seven. Always listen to whatever I say!”

The son agreed to do this. Then, in a few minutes’ time, he ran out

of his house and went to the house of another boy from his class. “Look,

look!” he said. “Now I am really wise and you won’t be able to laugh at me

anymore.”

The boy said, “I won’t be able to laugh at you anymore?”

The stupid fellow said, “No, no! I can easily tell you how many

members you have in your family. I know how to calculate, how to add.”

The boy said, “All right, tell me.”

The stupid fellow said, “Let me examine you! You tell first how

many members you have in your family. In case you make a mistake, I will

correct you.”

His friend laughed and laughed and said, “Look here, my brother is

the first member of the family, I am the second member, my mother is the

third and my father is the fourth.”

The stupid fellow said, “No, no, it can’t be. You are wrong. My

father told me that he is the fourth member. My father has told me always to

listen to him. So I am listening to him. You can say anything about your

brother being the first member, you being the second member and your

mother being the third. But the fourth member, no! My father is the fourth

member. My father has told me that if I always listen to him, then I will

become wise. So the fourth member cannot be anybody else but my father.”

O Tolo Tenta Ser Sábio

Em uma certa vila morava um sujeito muito tolo. Todos o

ridicularizavam e ele ficava desconsolado. Já que estava na adolescência, ele

foi para a escola, e todos na turma faziam graça. Mesmo as crianças, que

estavam em turmas menos adiantadas, faziam piadas dele. Todo o tempo

faziam graça, e ele ficava muito triste. Mas o que poderia fazer? Somente os

professores não o ridicularizavam. Eram sábios e amistosos, e lhe

demonstravam extrema compaixão e afeiçãoe. Havia também outra razão

para que o tratassem tão bem. Ele vinha de uma família muito rica. Seu pai e

sua irmã eram bem educados, e sua mãe tinha um coração muito grande.

Certo dia esse sujeito disse a seu pai: “Pai, eu sei que você é

muito sábio. Mesmo sendo seu filho, eu não sou sábio. Desculpe-me. Por

favor me diga como posso ser sábio como você.”

O pai respondeu: “Ouça-me sempre. Se me escutar, todos

pensarão que você é sábio. Veja, faça o seguinte. Você ainda não aprendeu a

fazer contas. Quando tem de somar ou subtrair, você erra. Agora me escute.

Na sua família você tem mãe, pai, irmã e você mesmo. Se eu disser que sua

mãe é o primeiro membro da família, que sua irmã é o segundo, que você é o

terceiro e eu o quarto, quantos membros somos?

O filho disse: “Quatro!”

O pai continuou: “Certo, somos quatro! Não diga cinco ou

seis. Sempre ouça o que eu digo!”

O filho concordou. Em poucos minutos, saiu correndo de sua

casa e foi até a casa de um colega de turma. “Veja, veja!”, ele disse, “Agora sou

muito sábio e vocês não mais rirão de mim.”

O menino disse: “Não mais poderei rir de você?”

O sujeito tolo respondeu: “Não, não! Posso facilmente dizer

quantos membros a sua familia tem. Eu sei contar, sei fazer adições.”

E o menino respondeu: “Certo.”

O tolo disse: “Deixe que eu o teste! Primeiro você diz quantos

são na sua família. Caso você se engane, eu o corrigirei.”

O amigo riu e riu, e então disse: “Veja, meu irmão é o primeiro

membro da família, eu sou o segundo, minha mãe é o terceiro e meu pai o

quarto.”

E a resposta do tolo sujeito foi: “Não, não pode ser. Você está

errado. Meu pai disse que ele é o quarto membro. E falou que sempre deveria

escutá-lo. E estou fazendo justamente isso. Você pode dizer que seu irmão é

o primeiro, você o segundo e sua mãe o terceiro. Mas o quarto, não! O meu

pai é o quarto membro. Meu pai disse que se eu sempre ouvir o que ele diz,

eu me tornarei sábio. Portanto o quarto membro não pode ser outro que não

o meu pai.”

The king’s three sons

Once a king had three sons. The first and second sons were very good, but

the third one was very bad. He was the worst possible rogue. In spite of

knowing that the third one was bad, the king liked him. After all, he was his

son.

The king was getting old. One day the third son said to his father, “You

know, my two brothers are useless. Although they spend all their time

reading books and following other kinds of scholarly pursuits, they are not as

smart as I am. When you die, the oldest one will get the throne. Then your

whole kingdom will immediately be ruined because he is not as clever and as

smart as I am. Neither is your second son. So please make me the king after

you leave the body.”

The king said, “How can I do that?”

The son said, “If you don’t do that, then your kingdom will be ruined.”

The king said, “All right, let me see who can really please me. From now on I

would like to see how well my sons can utilise my wealth. Let me give each of

you one lakh of rupees and see how you use it, since money-power can easily

corrupt. After giving you this money, I would like to know how you utilise it.

From this I will know which of you three is the wisest.”

With the money that his father gave him, the first brother bought many,

many books and opened up a library so that not only he, but also others

could study. He wanted both himself and others to be wise.

The second brother said, “The best thing is to give the money to charity. I

am not doing this for name and fame, but because there are so many poor

people on earth. Let this money go to them. If Father hadn’t given me this

money for a special purpose, I would not have got it at all. So actually it is not

my money. Even if I feel it is my money, let me give it to the poor.” So he

gave away his money to charity.

The third one used the money to form an army, and he told some of the new

recruits that when he became the king, he would give them very, very high

posts. He said that he would easily be able to defeat his father’s army with

his own army.

In three months’ time the father sent for his sons and asked them what they

had done with the money.

The first one said that he had opened up a library and the second one said

that he had given his money to charity. The third one, instead of saying

anything, brought four hundred soldiers right in front of the king and said,

“Now give me the throne, or I will kill you. Since you are an old man, the

best thing is for you to leave with honour. Either say that you are giving me

the kingdom because I am your wisest son and keep your honour, or I will

kill you and get the kingdom that way. Make up your mind.”

The king remained silent. Then he said, “Since my life is in your hands, you

decide what you are going to do. Either you can kill me now or you can wait

for a few years and then take the throne.”

The son said, “If you promise that you will give me the throne, then I will

wait until you die. But if you don’t promise, then I will take it now by killing

you.”

The king said, “I have to be kind and just to my other two sons who really

deserve this kingdom. The best thing is for you to kill me.”

So the king was executed by his own son, who then declared himself king.

Os Três Filhos do Rei

Era uma vez um rei que tinha três filhos. O primeiro e o segundo

eram muito bondosos, mas o terceiro era muito mau. Era o pior ladino.

Mesmo sabendo que o terceiro era mau, o rei gostava dele. Afinal, era seu

filho.

E o rei estava ficando idoso. Certo dia o terceiro filho disse ao pai:

“Você sabe que meus dois irmãos são uns inúteis. Mesmo que passem todo o

tempo lendo livros e com outros tipos de atividades escolásticas, eles não são

tão espertos quanto eu. Quando você morrer, o mais velho ficará com o

trono. Então seu reino imediatamente se arruinará porque ele não é tão

inteligente ou esperto quanto eu. Nem o é o seu segundo filho. Por favor

faça-me rei após você deixar o corpo.”

O rei exclamou: “Mas como eu poderia fazer isso?”

O filho respondeu: “Se não o fizer, seu reino será arruinado.”

O rei disse: “Certo, vejamos então quem pode de fato me agradar.

Verei como meus filhos utilizam a minha riqueza. Darei um lak de rúpias a

cada um e verei como o administram, pois poder-dinheiro corrompe

facilmente. Depois de o haver dado, gostaria de ver como o utilizaram. A

partir disso saberei qual dos três é mais sábio.”

Com o dinheiro que seu pai lhe deu, o primeiro irmão comprou

muitos, muito livros, e abriu uma biblioteca para que não apenas ele, mas

também outros pudessem estudar. Ele gostaria que ele e também os outros

fossem sábios.

O segundo irmão disse: “O melhor é doar o dinheiro à caridade. Não

faço isso por nome e fama, mas porque existem muitas pessoas pobres na

Terra. Que este dinheiro os encontre. Se o pai não tivesse me dado este

dinheiro para um propósito especial, eu não o teria recebido então. Na

verdade, não é meu dinheiro. Mesmo que eu sinta que seja meu dinheiro, o

doarei aos pobres.” Então doou seu dinheiro para a caridade.

O terceiro ergueu um exército com aquele dinheiro, e disse a alguns

dos novos recrutas que, quando ele se tornasse rei, ele lhes daria cargos

muito, muito altos. E disse também que facilmente derrotaria o exército de

seu pai com o seu próprio. Após três meses, o pai chamou seus filhos e

perguntou o que cada um havia feito com o dinheiro.

O primeiro filho disse que abriu uma biblioteca e o segundo

comentou que havia doado o dinheiro para a caridade. O terceiro, ao invés de

dizer alguma coisa, trouxe quatrocentos soldados diante do rei e falou:

“Agora dê-me o trono, ou eu o matarei. Já que é um homem velho, o melhor

seria sair com honra. Ou diga que está me dando o seu reino porque eu sou

seu filho mais sábio, ou eu o matarei e então ficarei com o seu reino. Decida-

se.”

O rei permaneceu em silêncio. Depois disse: “Já que a minha vida está

nas suas mãos, decida você o que fazer. Pode me matar agora ou pode esperar

mais alguns anos e então ficar com o trono.”

O filho disse: “Se você prometer que me dará o trono, eu esperarei até

que você morra. Mas, se não jurar, tomarei o trono agora, matando você.”

O rei respondeu: “Devo ser bom e justo para com meus outros dois

filhos que realmente merecem este reino. O melhor é que você me mate.”

Assim, o rei foi executado por seu próprio filho, o qual então se

declarou rei.

The burglar’s signature

Once there were two kings who were very good friends. They used to help

each other all the time. One day one of the kings needed a large sum of

money. He made a request to his friend, and his friend immediately agreed

to give it to him. The first king said, “I will send my minister to you, so please

give it to him.”

The other king said, “Definitely I will give it to him.”

So the first king sent his minister and three or four bodyguards to the other

king. Now, in the first king’s kingdom there was a burglar who used to steal

money every night. He was a real rogue, but nobody could catch him. He

had stolen lots of money, and with this money he had bribed certain palace

officials to give him news of what was happening there. He hoped that one

day he would be able to enter into the palace with their help and steal

everything.

The thief heard from his palace friends that the minister was going to get

money from the other king. That evening, as the minister and three guards

set out from the palace, all of a sudden the burglar and three of his friends

came and surrounded them. The thief said to them, “Now give us your

clothes. I have brought some other clothes for you. I will wear the minister’s

clothes and my three friends will wear the guards’ uniforms.” Then the thief

and his followers forced the minister and the guards to give up their clothes.

Now it happened that the thief did not know how to read and write. But he

was very clever. Several days earlier, he had gone to a great scholar and asked

him how to write the minister’s name.

The scholar had asked him, “Why do you have to know how to write the

minister’s name?”

The thief told him, “I want to know for some special purpose.”

The scholar said, “No, I won’t teach you how to sign the minister’s name.”

Finally the burglar said, “You have to teach me; otherwise, I will kill you.”

The scholar got frightened and said, “All right, don’t kill me. I will teach you

how to sign his name.”

The burglar wanted to be able to sign the minister’s name in case the other

king asked for his signature on a receipt. He knew that he was going to get

the minister’s clothes, so he also wanted to be able to sign the minister’s

name.

After changing clothes the thief and his three followers went to the

neighbouring king’s palace and got the money. It was a very, very large

amount. The burglar wanted to show off that he knew how to sign the

minister’s name, so he said, “Do you not need my signature?”

The king said, “Oh no, your king and I are such good friends. I don’t need

your signature.”

The thief said, “Still it is good to get the signature.”

The king said, “All right, if you want to sign, you can. But I really don’t need

any signature.”

So the false minister wrote down “Junga the Burglar”.

Immediately the king got a shock. He thought to himself, “O God, how

could this happen?” He asked the minister and the three guards to wait for a

while. Then he ordered his guards to go to the other king.

When they arrived, the guards said to the king, “We always hear that Junga

is the worst possible burglar in your kingdom. How is it that your minister

has signed Junga’s name? Our king wants to know why your minister is

making fun of him when he is giving you so much money.”

By this time the real minister had returned to the palace with the three

guards and had told his king that he had been forced to change clothes.

Immediately the king sent the message to his friend. His friend arrested

Junga and sent him back to the first king. Then he personally brought the

money to the neighbouring king.

So the thief was caught because the scholar was so clever. Since Junga did

not know how to read or write, the scholar taught him how to write his own

name and told him that it was the minister’s name.

A Assinatura do Ladrão

Era uma vez dois reis, os quais eram muito bons amigos. Eles

costumavam ajudar um ao outro todo o tempo. Num dia, um dos reis

precisou de uma grande soma em dinheiro. Então fez um pedido ao seu

dinheiro todas as noites. Ele era um verdadeiro ladino, e no entanto ninguém

conseguia capturá-lo. Já havia roubado muito dinheiro, e com esse dinheiro

pôde subornar alguns oficiais no palácio, para que lhe enviassem notícias

sobre o que acontecia. Com a ajuda deles ele esperava um dia poder entrar no

palácio e então roubar tudo.

O ladrão soube através dos seus amigos no palácio que o ministro

receberia do outro rei uma grande quantia de dinheiro. Naquela noite,

enquanto o ministro e os guardas saíam do palácio, o ladrão e três de seus

amigos os cercaram de surpresa. Então ele disse: “Dê-nos as suas roupas. Eu

trouxe outras para vocês. Eu vestirei a roupa do ministro e meus amigos

vestirão a dos guardas.” Então os forçou a entregarem as roupas.

O ladrão não sabia ler nem escrever. Mas era muito esperto; muitos

dias antes, ele havia pedido a um grande estudioso que o ensinasse a escrever

o nome do ministro.

O estudioso perguntou: “E por que você precisa saber como escrever

o nome do ministro?”

E o ladrão respondeu: “Tenho um motivo especial.”

Então disse o estudioso: “Eu não ensinarei a você como assinar o

nome do ministro.”

“Você tem de me ensinar, senão eu o matarei!” Esta foi a resposta do

ladrão.

O estudioso ficou assustado e disse: “Tudo bem, não me mate;

ensinarei a você como assinar o nome dele.” O ladrão queria saber assinar o

nome do ministro caso o outro rei pedisse a assinatura em um recibo. Ele

sabia que conseguiria as roupas do ministro, e também queria saber assinar o

nome.

Depois de trocar de roupas, o ladrão e seus três seguidores foram até o

palácio do rei vizinho e conseguiram o dinheiro. Era muito, muito dinheiro.

Mas o ladrão queria mostrar que sabia assinar o nome do ministro, e

portanto disse: “Você não precisa da minha assinatura?”

O rei respondeu: “Oh, não, o seu rei e eu somos ótimos amigos. Eu

não preciso da assinatura.”

“Ainda assim, é bom ter a assinatura”, disse o ladrão.

“Tudo bem,” respondeu o rei, “Se você quer assinar, assine. Mas eu

O rei teve um choque. Pensou consigo: “Ó Deus, como pode ter

acontecido?” Então pediu para o ministro e para os guardas esperarem um

pouco. Em seguida enviou seus próprios guardas ao outro rei.

Quando chegaram, os guardas disseram ao rei: “Sabemos que Junga é

o pior ladrão do seu reino. Como pode o seu ministro ter assinado o nome de

Junga? O nosso rei quer saber por que você está fazendo graça dele quando

ele oferece a você tanto dinheiro.”

O ministro verdadeiro já tinha retornado ao palácio, junto dos três

guardas e disse ao seu rei que havia sido forçado a trocar de roupas.

Imediatamente o rei enviou a mensagem ao seu amigo. Então Junga foi por

ele mandado preso, e enviado ao primeiro rei. E o rei levou pessoamente o

dinheiro.

O ladrão pode ser pego porque o estudioso foi muito inteligente.

Como Junga não sabia ler nem escrever, o estudioso o ensinou a escrever o

nome do próprio ladrão, dizendo que era o nome do ministro.

The doctor and his assistant

Once there was a village doctor whom everybody liked because he was

always able to cure his patients. He was very smart and he also knew all

about medicine.

One day a young man came up to him and said he wanted to be his assistant.

The doctor said, “No, no, no, I don’t think you are smart enough.”

The young man said, “No, I will be able to please you. Please let me learn

from you.”

The doctor finally agreed, and soon the man began learning how to use

medicine. After two years he started begging the doctor to let him come

along to see some of his patients. The doctor said, “All right. Since you have

been with me for two years, you may come with me today.”

So they went to see a patient. The doctor felt the pulse of the patient and

said, “I can see your fever has gone high.”

The patient said, “Yes, I know that my fever has gone high.”

The doctor asked, “Do you know why? It is because you have eaten some

candy.”

“Candy!” exclaimed the patient.

“Yes,” said the doctor. “I can see that you have eaten a few pieces of candy.”

The patient said, “It is true.”

The doctor said, “I know, I know. When I feel the pulse, immediately the

pulse tells me.”

So the patient confessed that he had eaten candy. The doctor told him not to

eat candy until he was totally cured and his fever had gone down.

When the doctor and assistant were coming back, the assistant said he was

so amazed at how the doctor could tell what someone had eaten just by

feeling the pulse. “How could you do it? How could you do it?” he asked.

The doctor said, “You fool, I saw at the door a few candy wrappers. I said to

myself, ‘Who else could have eaten the candy?’ So immediately I challenged

the man and he confessed. Otherwise, do you think that by feeling the pulse

one can say who has eaten candy? But don’t you do this kind of thing. You

will be in trouble.”

The doctor was a smart doctor, but he was also sincere. He told his assistant

what he had done. A few days later, when the doctor was supposed to see

another patient, it happened that he himself was sick. By this time he had a

little faith in his assistant, so he told him, “Today I am feeling very sick. You

go and see this patient. But be very careful, because this is the first time you

are going to see someone.”

“Definitely I will be careful,” said the assistant. “When I come back, you will

be very proud of me. You can rest assured that I will do everything correctly,

and you will get a good report. The patient will say nice things about me.”

When the assistant arrived at the patient’s house, he saw that the patient

had a very high fever. The assistant said, “I know why you have got such a

high fever. I can see that you have eaten mangos.”

The patient said, “No, I have not.”

The assistant said, “Your pulse tells me that you have.”

The patient said, “My pulse tells you? Those mangos I have kept for my wife

and children. They eat mangos. I have got such a high fever. How can I eat

mangos?”

The assistant said, “Your pulse tells me that this morning you ate four

mangos. That’s why your fever is so high.”

The man got so furious that he asked his sons and servants to beat the

assistant black and blue. He also got mad at the real doctor for sending such

a horrible assistant, and he sent one of his servants to insult the doctor.

The assistant never returned to the doctor again. He was so badly beaten

that he said, “No, no, I am not going to be a doctor anymore. It is too

dangerous a profession.”

The real doctor was very happy that he did not have to deal with that kind of

idiot-assistant anymore.

O Médico E Seu Assistente

Havia um médico de vilarejos de quem todos gostavam, pois ele

sempre era capaz de curar seus pacientes. Ele era muito esperto e também

sabia tudo sobre medicina.

Certo dia um jovem veio até ele e disse que gostaria de ser seu

assistente. O médico respondeu: “Não, não, não. Não acho que você seja

suficientemente esperto.”

E o rapaz falou: “Eu serei capaz de agradá-lo. Deixe que eu aprenda

com você.”

Por fim o médico concordou, e logo o jovem homem começou a

aprender como utilizar os remédios. Após dois anos ele começou a implorar

ao médico que permitisse que fosse junto nas visitas aos pacientes. O médico

disse: “Tudo bem. Já que esteve comigo por dois anos, hoje você os visitará

comigo.”

Então foram ver um paciente. O médico tomou o pulso dele e disse:

“Vejo que sua febre está alta.”

E respondeu o paciente: “Sim, eu sei que ela está alta.”

O médico perguntou: “Você sabe por quê? É porque você andou

comendo docinhos.”

“Docinhos!” exclamou o paciente.

“É,” disse o doutor. “Vejo que comeu alguns docinhos.”

O paciente confessou: “É verdade.”

O médico disse: “Eu sei, eu sei. Quando sinto o pulso, ele me mostra

imediatamente.”

O paciente confessou que havia comido docinhos. O médico disse

que não comesse mais docinhos até que estivesse totalmente curado e sua

febre baixado.

Enquanto retornavam ele e seu ajudante, este estava assombrado por

ver como o médico sabia que alguém havia comido docinhos apenas sentindo

o pulso. “Como é que você fez? Como soube?” Ele perguntou.

E o médico respondeu: “Seu tolo, eu vi algumas embalagens de doces

perto da porta. Então pensei comigo: 'Quem mais os teria comido?'

Imediatamente confrontei o homem e ele confessou. Senão, como poderia

saber se alguém comeu docinhos apenas sentindo o pulso? Mas não vá fazer

esse tipo de coisas. Se o fizer, arranjará problemas.”

O doutor era um médico esperto, mas também sincero. Ele contou ao

assistente o que tinha feito. Alguns dias depois, quando o médico deveria ver

outro paciente, ele mesmo ficou doente. Já tinha alguma fé no seu ajudante, e

portanto disse a ele: “Hoje estou muito mal. Veja como está aquele paciente.

Mas seja muito cuidadoso, pois é a sua primeira visita.”

“Certamente serei cuidadoso,” disse o assistente. “Quando eu

retornar, você ficará muito orgulhoso de mim. Pode ficar certo de que farei

tudo direito, e você receberá boas notícias minhas. O paciente dirá coisas

boas sobre mim.”

Quando chegou na casa do paciente, o assistente viu que ele estava

com febre alta. Então disse: “Eu sei porque você está com febre. Estou certo

de que andou comendo mangas.” O paciente retornou: “Não, não comi.”

E o assistente explicou: “O seu pulso me diz que sim.”

“O meu pulso lhe diz?” disse o paciente. “Aquelas mangas são para a

minha esposa e meus filhos. Eles comem mangas. Eu estou com febre alta;

como poderia comer mangas?”

O ajudante insistiu: “Seu pulso me diz que você comeu quatro

mangas hoje pela manhã. É por isso que sua febre está tão alta.”

O homem ficou tão furioso que pediu a seus filhos e empregados que

dessem uma surra no assistente. Ficou furioso com o médico de verdade, por

este ter enviado um péssimo assistente, e mandou um de seus empregados

ofender o médico.

Depois, o ajudante retornou ao médico. Estava tão machucado que

disse: “Não, não serei um médico. É uma profissão perigosa demais.”

O verdadeiro médico ficou muito feliz por não ter mais de lidar com

aquele tolo-assistente.

The king and the three thieves

In a certain kingdom there were three thieves. These three thieves

used to steal like anything. The king was so sad that he was unable to do

anything to punish these thieves. In so many ways his ministers had tried to

catch them, but always they failed. The king was physically very strong and

powerful. “In some way I will have to catch these thieves,” he said.

So every night he went out of his palace in disguise, wearing most

simple clothes like those a thief wears. During the night he went in search of

the culprits. He would go by the houses of his friends, the way a thief does,

moving around in a very secret manner. He told his friends not to tell

anyone what he was doing.

One night it happened that the king, who was posing as a thief,

actually saw the three thieves near the house that he was pretending to steal

from. So he jumped in front of them and said, “Look, you are thieves. Let me

join you. I will be the fourth.”

They said, “Who needs you? We don’t need you.”

He said, “You don’t need me? It is good to have one more. And I

tell you, I shall always please you. I am a great thief, just like you are. I have

been hearing so much about you. Now I would like to be a member of your

group.”

They said, “What kind of special capacity do you have?”

The king said, “Oh, I have no special capacity, but may I hear what

special capacities you have?”

One thief said, “I can unlock any door in the twinkling of an eye. I

have that kind of capacity.”

Another one said, “I know where the wealth is. He can unlock any

door, but I can easily tell in which room or in which place the wealth is.”

The third one said, “I can remember people. Once I see someone, I

can always recognise that person even if his face or his body has changed.

Even if everything is changed, still I can recognise the person. I have that

kind of retentive faculty.”

Then they said to him, “Now you have to tell us what capacity you

have. If you don’t have any special capacity, why should we take you in our

group?”

The king said, “Look, I have got a ring. If I press my ring,

immediately I can kill people. And if I raise my hand, immediately I can save

people.”

They said, “Oh, you have that kind of capacity! Then we can use

you.”

The king said, “Today, let me take you to the King’s palace. There

is no need to be afraid. We have a silly king. Since you have the capacity to

unlock doors and the capacity to know where the wealth is, today let us go to

the palace and rob the king.”

The three thieves agreed. “This is a wonderful idea, a wonderful

idea,” they said.

So in disguise the king brought them to the palace. Then the fellow

who knew how to open the lock immediately opened the door. The other

one who had the capacity to find the wealth, did so. Then immediately the

king summoned the guards and the thieves were arrested.

The following morning the minister brought them before the king.

The king said to the robbers, “I played this trick and caught you. Now you

shall be executed. Yesterday I told you that if I press my ring, then

whomever I want to kill will be killed. See, I am pressing my ring. Now you

will be executed.”

The three thieves started crying and crying. Now the three thieves

realised that he was the king and he had caught them. They said, “But you

told us that you also have another capacity. You said that if you raise your

hand, then you can save anybody you want to. Will you not show us that

capacity too? Will you not raise your hand and save us?”

So the king raised his hand and said, “All right, I will save you three.

But now you have to take an oath that you will never steal again. Better yet, I

will give you some work here in the palace. Then you will be always under

supervision and you won’t be able to steal from anybody else.”

O Rei E Os Três Ladrões

Num certo reino haviam três ladrões. Esses três ladrões

costumavam roubar muito. O rei estava bastante triste por não conseguir

nunca fazer algo para puni-los. Seus ministros tentaram de vários modos

prendê-los - e no entanto sempre fracassaram. O rei era fisicamente bem

forte e poderoso. “Terei de pegá-los de algum modo”, ele pensou.

Assim, todas as noites ele saía de seu palácio disfarçado,

usando roupas simples como aquelas que um ladrão usa, e então procurava

pelos culpados. O procedimento era visitar as casas de seus amigos, mas

muito sorrateiro, como faria um ladrão. Também pediu para seus amigos

que nunca revelassem a ninguém o que ele estava fazendo.

Certa noite, o rei, fingindo que era um ladrão, de fato viu os

três ladrões que procurava, perto da casa que fingia estar roubando. Então

saltou diante deles e disse: “Vocês são ladrões. Deixem que eu me una a

vocês. Eu serei o quarto integrante.”

Eles disseram: “Quem precisa de você? Nós é que não.”

E respondeu o rei: “Não precisam de mim? Mas é bom ter um

a mais. E eu lhes digo, sempre os agradarei. Sou um grande ladrão como

vocês, e de vocês muito ouvi falar. Agora gostaria de me tornar parte de seu

grupo.”

“Que tipo de capacidade especial você tem?” Perguntaram eles.

“Oh, eu não tenho nenhuma capacidade especial,” disse o rei,

“Mas posso saber que capacidades especiais vocês tem?”

Um deles disse: “Posso destrancar qualquer porta num piscar

de olhos. Isso eu posso fazer.”

“Eu sei onde a riqueza está. Ele pode abrir qualquer porta, mas

eu posso dizer facilmente em que aposento ou lugar está a riqueza,” disse

outro.

E o terceiro explicou: “Eu lembro das pessoas. Uma vez que

tenha visto alguém, sempre poderei reconhecer aquela pessoa mesmo que o

rosto ou o corpo tenha mudado. Mesmo se tudo mudar, ainda consigo

reconhecer a pessoa. Eu tenho essa capacidade de retenção.”

Então pergutaram ao rei: “Agora você deve dizer que tipo de

capacidade tem. Se não tiver capacidade alguma, por que deveríamos aceitá-

lo em nosso grupo?”

Esta foi a resposta: “Eu possuo um anel. Se eu pressioná-lo,

posso matar alguém de imediato. E se erguer a minha mão, poderei

imediatamente salvar alguém.”

“Puxa, você tem tal capacidade!”, disseram, “Então ficaremos

com você.”

O rei disse: “Hoje iremos ao palácio do rei. Não há porque

temer. Nós temos um rei tolo. Já que vocês têm a capacidade de abrir portas e

saber onde está a riqueza, hoje iremos ao palácio roubar do rei.”

Os três ladrões concordaram: “Essa é uma ótima idéia, uma

ótima idéia.”

Então, disfarçado, o rei os levou até o palácio. O sujeito que

sabia abrir a porta a abriu. O que sabia onde encontrar a riqueza a achou.

Imediatamente, o rei chamou os guardas e os ladrões foram presos.

Na manhã seguinte o ministro os trouxe diante do rei. O rei

disse aos ladrões: “Eu fiz essa encenação e os peguei. Agora vocês serão

executados. Ontem eu lhes disse que se pressionasse este anel, qualquer um

que eu desejasse morto, morreria. E logo pressionarei meu anel. Vocês serão

executados.”

Os três começaram a chorar e chorar. Agora haviam

percebido que ele era o rei e que os descobrira. Disseram: “Você nos contou

que possuía outra capacidade também. Disse que se erguesse a mão poderia

salvar quem quisesse. Não nos mostraria também essa capacidade? Não

levantaria sua mão e nos salvaria?”

Então o rei ergueu a mão e disse: “Tudo bem, eu os salvarei.

Mas vocês têm de fazer um juramento de que nunca mais roubarão. Melhor

ainda, darei a vocês um emprego aqui no palácio. Assim estarão sempre

sobre supervisão e não poderão roubar.”

The yogi’s advice

There was once a king who was very unhappy because he was unable to

conquer the neighbouring king. He and the other king were friends, but at

the same time they were rivals. When meanness, jealousy and ego came

forward, the first king wanted to conquer his so-called friend and make him

his subordinate. In so many ways he tried to increase his army and military

power. But even then he could not compete with his rival-friend. Finally he

said, “Now that physical power, military power, is not succeeding, let me try

spiritual power.”

So he went to a yogi and said, “Please, please help me out. I will give you

everything that I have. All my money-power, everything, I will surrender to

you. I will touch your feet; I will sit at your feet and wash your feet every day.

Only please tell me how I can conquer the other king.”

The yogi said, “It is so easy. Just conquer your anger. If you conquer your

anger, then you will be able to easily conquer the other king.”

So the king went home and followed the yogi’s advice. No matter what

people said or did, he did not get angry. For some time he practised this, until

there was no anger at all in his life. After six months he was so happy. He

went back to the sage and said, “Now that I have conquered anger, will I not

be able to conquer that king?”

The sage said, “Just wait for a few more months. For another three months

try to keep your temper under control. Don’t get angry with anybody.”

The king said, “All right, all right. For three more months I will do that.”

After three months the king came back. The yogi said to him, “I am so sorry.

It seems to me that you will need another two months.”

The king said, “All right. I have already conquered my anger for six months

and for three months, so I can easily do it for two more months.”

After two months the king came back again. The yogi said, “Please wait one

more month. This time it will be absolutely the last. If you can keep your

temper under control for one more month, I tell you, you will be able to

conquer the neighbouring king.”

After one month the king came back once again. He was so happy and

delighted and said, “Now tell me how I can really conquer my enemy. Now I

am calling him my enemy because I have conquered my anger and am about

to fight him.”

The yogi said, “What do I know about fighting? What do I know about

kings and armies and battles? What do I know about these things? I pray to

God for peace, joy and love. How can I be of any help to those who want war

and fighting? I try to save people and you try to kill people. In my case by

giving new life to people I become happy. In your case you want to be happy

by killing people. I am the last person to help you out, because you want

violence and I want peace. You have come to the wrong person.”

The king got mad and wanted to kill the yogi. He said, “You told me to

come back to you when I had conquered my anger.”

The yogi said, “Look, look! Who is angry now, who is angry now? Have you

really conquered your anger? If you can’t conquer your own anger, then how

are you going to conquer the other king? I told you that if you conquer your

anger, then easily you will be able to conquer that king. But you have not

even conquered your own anger. So how are you going to conquer him? I

cannot help you at all.”

O Conselho do Yogi

Era uma vez um rei que estava muito infeliz, pois não conseguia

conquistar o rei vizinho. Ele e o outro rei eram amigos, mas ao mesmo tempo

rivais. Quando a mesquinhez, inveja e ego vinham à tona, o primeiro rei

desejava conquistar seu assim chamado amigo e fazer dele seu subordinado.

De muitas maneiras procurou aumentar seu exército e seu poder militar.

Mas mesmo assim ele ainda não poderia se comparar ao seu rival-amigo. Por

fim disse: “Já que o poder físico, o poder militar, não está dando certo,

tentarei o poder espiritual.”

Então encontrou-se com um Yogi e disse: “Por favor, por favor me

ajude. Darei a você tudo o que eu tenho. Todo o meu poder-dinheiro, tudo,

entregarei a você; tocarei os seus pés; sentarei-me e lavarei os seus pés todos

os dias. Apenas me diga como posso conquistar o outro rei.”

O Yogi disse: “É fácil. Basta conquistar a sua ira. Se superar a sua

raiva, facilmente conquistará o outro rei.”

O rei seguiu o conselho do Yogi. Não importando o que fizessem ou

dissessem as outras pessoas, ele não tinha raiva. Ele praticou até que não mais

houvesse ira em sua vida. Após seis meses ele estava muito feliz. Retornou ao

sábio e disse: “Tendo conquistado a ira, não serei eu capaz de conquistar

aquele rei?” O sábio respondeu: “Espere mais alguns meses. Por mais três

meses mantenha-se controlado. Não fique com raiva de ninguém.”

“Tudo bem, por mais três meses eu o farei.”

Passados três meses o rei retornou. O Yogi então disse: “Desculpe-

me, mas está parecendo que você precisará de mais dois meses.”

E respondeu o rei: “Tudo bem. Superei a minha raiva por seis meses e

depois por mais três, e portanto posso continuar por mais dois meses.”

Após dois meses o rei estava novamente diante do Yogi. “Espere mais

um mês,” disse o Yogi, “Esta vez será a última. Se puder se controlar por mais

um mês, eu lhe digo que será capaz de conquistar o rei vizinho.”

No mês seguinte o rei mais uma vez retornou. Estava bastante feliz e

deleitado, dizendo: “Agora me diga como posso realmente conquistar meu

inimigo. Posso chamá-lo de inimigo pois conquistei a minha ira e estou

prestes a lutar contra ele.”

“O que sei eu sobre guerras?” respondeu o Yogi. “O que sei sobre reis,

exércitos e batalhas? Nada sei sobre isso. Eu oro a Deus por paz, alegria e

amor. Como poderia ser de ajuda àqueles que desejam guerras e lutas? Eu

tento salvar pessoas e você tenta matar pessoas. Ao dar nova vida às pessoas,

eu fico feliz. Você tenta ficar feliz tirando suas vidas. Eu sou a última pessoa

que o ajudaria, pois você quer violência e eu quero paz. Você veio à pessoa

errada.”

O rei ficou furioso e quis matar o Yogi. Disse: “Você disse que eu

poderia retornar quando tivesse superado minha ira.”

E o Yogi replicou: “Veja, veja! Quem está irado agora, quem está

irado? Você superou de fato a sua raiva? Se não pode nem mesmo conquistar

a sua raiva, como conquistará o outro rei? Nem a própria ira você

conquistou. Como irá conquistar o rei? Não posso ajudá-lo então.”

The sculptor

There was once a rich man who was also kind and generous. He

had many friends and admirers. When he died, everybody felt sad and

miserable. So some of his friends wanted to have a statue made of him to

perpetuate his memory.

Unfortunately, everyone had a different opinion as to who should

make the statue. One person said that a particular sculptor was the best.

Another one said that someone else would be better. In this way they argued

for several months. Finally they decided to take a vote. When they took a

vote, they found that one person stood first. So all of them went to that

particular sculptor and said, “You are the best according to us. Now please

make a statue of our friend.”

The sculptor said, “He was such a great and good man. He was not

only rich but great and good as well, so it is a great honour for me to be

requested to make a statue of him. I can start right away if you want me to.”

They asked, “How much will you charge?”

The sculptor said, “I will charge one thousand dollars.”

They said, “One thousand dollars? One thousand! That is too

much. We shall find somebody else. There are many other good sculptors.”

One person said, “Let us go to a certain young sculptor who is just

rising in his career. I am sure he will ask for less money. He may not be well-

established, but I tell you, he will do a much better job than this old man. Just

because he is young, nobody knows him. But a day will come when he will

become very well-known and famous.”

They all agreed to go to the young sculptor. The young man was

very happy, delighted and excited to get this kind of job. They asked, “How

long will it take?”

He said, “It will take a long time. It will take at least six months.”

They told him, “Don’t worry. Only do a good job. You don’t have

to worry about your wages. We will please you.”

After six months they came back and they were quite pleased with

the statue. Then they asked, “How much do you want?”

The young man said, “Two thousand dollars.”

They cried, “What! Two thousand? How dare you ask for two

thousand when the old man who is so well-known only asked for one

thousand.”

The young man said, “That is his business. He can ask whatever he

wants. He is my teacher and I bow to him in all artistic matters. But I don’t

ask him about the price. In this area I make my own decision. Whatever I

feel is right, I ask for. So you have to give me two thousand dollars.

Otherwise, I am not going to give you the sculpture.”

They said, “All right, what can we do? Now we have to surrender.

We are very pleased with your sculpture; it is so beautiful. But before we give

you the two thousand dollars, let us go and ask your teacher how much your

work deserves.”

When they went to ask his teacher how much the young sculptor

deserved, the teacher said, “How much did he ask for?”

They said, “He asked for two thousand dollars.”

The old sculptor said, “He is right, he is right.”

They said, “How can he be right? You are far better than he is. You

are a great sculptor, an expert. You asked for one thousand dollars and he is

asking for two thousand dollars. How can you say he is right?”

He said, “If I had done it, then I would have finished it in three

months or even less. But he has taken six months. Doesn’t he deserve to be

paid for the three extra months he has spent on it? If I had done it, I would

have taken three months and asked for one thousand dollars. But he has

taken six months because he is not an expert like me. He told you it would

take time and he has done a good job. So now for another three months’

work you have to pay. Therefore he deserves the two thousand dollars.”

O Escultor

Era uma vez um homem muito rico e muito generoso, que

tinha muitos amigos e admiradores. Quando ele faleceu, todos ficaram

tristes e desconsolados. Então, alguns de seus amigos quiseram fazer uma

estátua dele, a fim de perpetuar sua memória.

Infelizmente, todos tinham opiniões diferentes sobre quem

deveria fazer a estátua. Uma pessoa dizia que tal escultor era o melhor.

Outra indicava outro escultor, dizendo que aquele era o melhor. E assim os

meses se passaram em discussão. Por fim decidiram fazer uma votação.

Então um dos escultores ficou em primeiro lugar. E todos foram visitá-lo e

disseram: “Nós achamos que você é o melhor. Por favor, faça para nós uma

estátua do nosso amigo.

O escultor falou: “Ele era um homem muito bondoso e

escultor, que é jovem e está iniciando sua carreira. Pode não ser muito

conhecido, mas lhes digo que ele fará um trabalho muito melhor do que esse

senhor. Por ser jovem, ninguém o conhece. Mas chegará o dia em que ele se

tornará muito bem conhecido e famoso.”

Todos concordaram em visitar o jovem escultor. Este ficou

bastante feliz, animado e contente por receber tal serviço. Perguntaram a ele:

“De quanto tempo precisará?”

Ele respondeu: “Levará bastante tempo. No mínimo seis

meses.”

“Não se preocupe,” disseram eles, “Apenas faça um bom

trabalho. Não se preocupe com o preço. Seremos capazes de satisfazê-lo.”

Seis meses depois os amigos retornaram e gostaram bastante

da estátua. Então inquiriram: “Quanto você quer por ela?”

O jovem respondeu: “Dois mil dólares.”

E houve a exclamação: “O quê!? Dois mil? Como ousa pedir

dois mil quando aquele senhor tão famoso pediu apenas mil?”

A resposta foi: “Isso é da conta dele. Ele pode pedir o quanto

quiser. Ele é meu professor e eu me curvo a ele em todos os assuntos

artísticos, mas não lhe pergunto sobre o preço. Neste quesito tomo a minha

própria decisão. Peço o quanto acho que seja justo. Portanto, vocês precisam

me pagar dois mil dólares. Senão, não entregarei a escultura.”

“Tudo bem, o que podemos fazer?”, disseram eles,

“Precisamos nos render. A escultura que fez nos agrada muito; é muito bela.

Mas, antes de pagarmos os dois mil dólares, iremos perguntar ao seu

professor quanto o seu trabalho vale.”

Quando perguntaram ao professor quanto merecia o jovem

escultor, o professor disse: “Quanto ele pediu?”

meses ou até menos. Mas ele levou seis. Não merece ele ser pago pelos três

meses adicionais em que trabalhou na estátua? Se fosse eu, teria levado três

meses e o preço seria mil dólares. Já ele precisou de seis meses, pois não é

habilidoso como eu. Ele lhes disse que levaria tempo. E fez um bom trabalho.

Então vocês devem pagar por três meses adicionais de trabalho. Portanto, ele

merece os dois mil dólares.”

The telltale mark

A rich couple was blessed with a child who was born with a mark

on his forehead. They were very happy and excited. The mother said that

the mark was a sign that the boy was going to become a great writer. But the

father said, “No, no! The mark means that he is going to be as strong and as

powerful as I am. Physically he will be very, very strong and powerful.”

Some of their friends said that the child would be a sailor and sail

from one country to another. But everybody said that the mark meant that

this little baby would be very great or good or both. So the parents were very

pleased. They said, “Let us now see what happens to him when he grows up.

Everybody is saying good things, exceptionally good things, about him.”

One day a beggar came to their house for alms. The father

happened to be at the gate and he noticed that the beggar had exactly the

same kind of mark at the same spot as their little child.

The father immediately summoned his wife and said, “Now look,

look! Here is a fellow who has the same mark as our child. And what is he

doing? He is a beggar! So let us not boast anymore. Our son is definitely

going to become a beggar. Here is the proof!”

The wife said, “You are right, you are right. This beggar has the

same mark at the same spot. O God, what have You done, what have You

done? When our son grows up, he will also become a beggar. That we don’t

want to see.”

The husband said, “From now on, let us put as much money as

possible in the bank for him. We are now old, and soon we shall die. But if he

has money in the bank, then he will be able to live comfortably on earth. We

don’t want our son to become a beggar.”

So they put lots of money in the bank in their son’s name, so that he

would not end up poverty-stricken like this beggar.

O Sinal Profético

Um casal abastado foi abençoado com uma criança, que tinha

uma marca na fronte. Eles ficaram muito felizes e animados. A mãe dizia que

era um sinal de que o menino se tornaria um grande escritor. Mas o pai dizia:

“Não, não! É um sinal de que ele será tão forte quanto eu. Será fisicamente

muito, muito forte.”

local, o mesmo tipo de sinal que seu filhinho.

sujeito tem a mesma marca que nosso filho. E quem é ele? Ele é um pedinte!

Quando nosso filho crescer, também ele se tornará um pedinte. Certamente

se tornará. Lá está a prova!”

A esposa adicionou: “Você está certo, está certo. Esse mendigo

tem a mesma marca, no mesmo lugar. Ó Deus, o que Você fez, o que Você

fez? Quando nosso filho crescer ELE se tornará outro mendigo. Não

queremos isso!”

Seu esposo disse: “De agora em diante, colocaremos para ele

no banco tanto quanto for possível. Já estamos velhos, e logo morreremos.

Mas se tiver dinheiro no banco, poderá viver confortavelmente na Terra.

Não queremos que nosso filho se torne um mendigo.”

Então depositaram muito dinheito no banco, em nome do

filho deles, para que ele não ficasse empobrecido como aquele pedinte.

Meditation is not an escape. Meditation is the acceptance of life in

its totality, with a view to transforming it for the highest

manifestation of the divine Truth here on earth.

Meditation is absolutely necessary for those who want to have a

better and more fulfilling life. If you feel that you are satisfied with

what you have and what you are, then you need not enter into the

field of meditation. But if you feel that there is a barren desert deep

inside your heart, then I wish to say that meditation is the answer.

Meditation will give you inner joy and peace of mind. Meditation

will never take you away from your parents, from your children,

from your family. Far from it. Only it will strengthen your

connection with your dear ones, because inside them you will see

the very existence of God.

If you wish to develop your talents or increase your capacity in any

field, then I wish to say that it is obligatory to follow some inner

discipline. If you are a singer but you wish to sing infinitely better,

if you aspire, I tell you, your voice will become far better. There is

nothing on earth that cannot be improved through spirituality and

meditation.

If you want to simplify your life, meditation is the answer. If you

want to fulfil your life, meditation is the answer. If you want to

have joy and offer joy to the world at large, then meditation is the

only answer.

If you meditate to forget your suffering or to forget your

difficulties, then you are not meditating for the right reason. But if

you are meditating only to please God and fulfil God in His own

way, then your meditation is correct. When God is pleased, and

God is fulfilled in your meditation, then it is God’s business to take

away your sufferings and difficulties. But if you meditate to escape

from the world or to challenge the world and stand against the

world, then you are doing the wrong thing.

Meditation is your conscious capacity that you have to utilise every

day and every second to enter into your highest divinity, where the

finite is completely lost in the Infinite. The finite existence which

you have and which you are, can easily be lost in the infinite and

become totally one with the infinite if you meditate. This is what

meditation is and what meditation can do for you.

A meditação não é uma fuga. Meditação é a aceitação da vida em sua totalidade, buscando transformá-la na mais elevada manifestação da Verdade divina aqui na Terra.

A meditação é absolutamente necessária para aqueles que desejam uma vida melhor e mais satisfatória. Se você sente que está satisfeito com o que tem e o que é, não precisa entrar no campo da meditação. Mas, se você sente que há um deserto árido dentro do seu coração, a meditação é a resposta. Caso medite para se esquecer do seu sofrimento ou das suas dificuldades, então não estará meditando pela razão correta. Mas se estiver meditando só para satisfazer a Deus e para satisfazer a Deus à maneira Dele, então a sua meditação estará correta. Quando Deus fica satisfeito, e Ele fica satisfeito com a sua meditação, então passa a ser problema Dele resolver os seus

sofrimentos e as suas dificuldades. Contudo, se você meditar para escapar do mundo, ou para enfrentá-lo e ficar contra ele, não estará fazendo a coisa certa.

A meditação é uma capacidade consciente que você tem e que deve ser usada todos os dias, a todo momento, uma capacidade para entrar na sua divindade mais elevada, onde o finito está completamente imerso no Infinito. Ao meditar, a existência finita que você tem e que você é pode ser facilmente imersa no Infinito e se tornar totalmente uma com Ele. Isso é o que a meditação é e o que ela pode fazer por você.

Transcendental Poetry

days that are dawning upon the earth well may we look for the

leaven of transcendental poetry to uplift the whole human mass.

Instead of trying to replace one desire for a better one, it is

worthwhile to attempt a transcending desire, so that in a trance

one may intuit Him who hears one's heart's call and is ever ready to

lend one His helping Hand.

When men worship God in the hope of getting their

miseries removed, they may meet with frustration and are apt to

lose their faith in God.

The gods are ever ready to help us, but when we demand

of them something quite absurd, and in our human weakness we

refuse to undergo the troubles and tribulations that are necessary

for our development, we may lose the chance of the descent of their

grace.

The poet has the divine faith, the inner intuition that the

existence of the One Supreme Divine has hardly anything to do

with the commonly sought spiritual experience side-by-side with

common miseries.

In order to write a poem, the poet must transport himself

to the sphere of the Muse and lose himself there. He has to be like

a flame that burns away everything but itself.

Poesia transcendental

A poesia que brota de um coração devoto leva corações afins ao sempre-doce Uno e faz deles uma República com Ele como presidente. Nenhuma outra faculdade tem talvez um poder maior de transcendência dos limites ao ilimitável. Nos dias reluzentes que despertam na Terra, poderemos bem procurar pelo fermento da poesia transcendental para elevar a massa humana como um todo.

Ao invés de intentar substituir um desejo por outro melhor, é de valia tentar um desejo transcendente, para que, num transe, possa intuir Aquele que ouve o chamado do seu coração e está sempre pronto a oferecer a Sua Mão auxiliadora.

Quando homens adoram Deus com a esperança de ter suas tristezas removidas, eles podem encontrar frustração e perder a fé em Deus.

Os deuses estão sempre prontos a nos auxiliar, mas, quando exigimos algo bastante absurdo e, na nossa fraqueza humana, nos recusamos a passar pelas provações e tribulações necessárias ao nosso desenvolvimento, podemos perder a oportunidade da vinda da sua graça.

Instead of trying to replace one desire for a better one, it is worthwhile to attempt a transcending desire, so that in a trance one may intuit Him who hears one's heart's call and is ever ready to lend one His helping Hand.

When men worship God in the hope of getting their miseries removed, they may meet with frustration and are apt to lose their faith in God.

The gods are ever ready to help us, but when we demand of them something quite absurd, and in our human weakness we refuse to undergo the troubles and tribulations that are necessary for our development, we may lose the chance of the descent of their grace.

The poet has the divine faith, the inner intuition that the existence of the One Supreme Divine has hardly anything to do with the commonly sought spiritual experience side-by-side with common miseries.

In order to write a poem, the poet must transport himself to the sphere of the Muse and lose himself there. He has to be like a flame that burns away everything but itself.

Ralph Waldo Emerson

A thinker in the sublimest sense of the term is Emerson.

His philosophy touches the core of all earthly problems. "Ends,"

said he, "pre-exist in the means." Hence what matters is to cherish

our highest aspirations in all sincerity and determination and rest

assured in the faith that these will realise themselves.

He came of poor parents, but had an indomitable will and

an utter self-reliance. Strangely enough, he was taught from within

to be cheerful in the face of poverty. His father, William Emerson,

a clergyman, passed away when Waldo was a boy of eight. Soon

afterwards, the family was thrown into extreme poverty. It came to

such a pass that Emerson and his elder brother had to share a

single overcoat to help them through the terrible winter. Obviously

one of them had to stay indoors while the other was out — and

who but the younger of the two was the unfortunate one? Waldo

missed the attractions, affections and amusements of the outside

world; but at the same time this isolation gave him an opportunity

to plunge into the sea of knowledge. Voraciously he studied.

Plato's Dialogues and Pascal's Thoughts inspired all his moments.

Later, impelled from within, he welcomed Spinoza and Montaigne

along with his previous masters.

He had many antagonists. Hypocrisy and superstition

were the worst of them. He fought and fought them, but success

remained a far cry. He had also numerous friends. Truth and

sincerity topped their ranks.

America, the fairest land of freedom, opportunity and

progress, inspired in Emerson the thought that his countrymen

should utilise all her divine gifts to strive for the most divine aims

of life. Indeed, America will gain her true stature when she lives up

to her philosopher-son's towering aspirations.

Emerson's love for the American student stemmed from

his topmost aspiration:

Our student must have a style and determination, and be

a master in his own speciality. But having this, he must put it

behind him. He must have a catholicity, a power to see with a free

and disengaged look every object.

In other words, he expected the American student to be a

useful unit not only of the American nation but of the world-

family in the making.

"The things taught in the schools and colleges," Emerson

strongly felt, "are not an education, but the means of education."

For a student to be furnished with "the means" is to have thrown

upon him the responsibility for continuing to educate himself until

at last the finite and the Infinite within and without him are

unified into an expanded personality.

No doubt philanthropy and charity have much to their

credit. But most people are unconscious of the great limitations of

these two virtues. Being a genuine lover of Truth, Emerson made

bold to say: "Philanthropies and charities have a certain air of

quackery." Truly few, perhaps none, have imprinted on the tablets

of their hearts the great teaching of the Bible:

When thou doest alms, let not thy left hand know what

thy right doeth.

For Emerson, poetry and philosophy were no mere

intellectual embellishments. Philosophy was a dynamic factor in

the shaping of his life. He was a true man of vision, and he used

philosophy to sustain his vision and poetry to express it. His life

was a happy blend of sublime dreams and creative gestures. He

knew no compromise with his ingrained truth: "When he [the

poet] sings, the world listens with the assurance that now a secret

of God is to be spoken." Does this not conform to the Indian

definition of the poet as seer? Needless to say, Emerson's high

idealism lifted him far above his age.

On March 11, 1829, Emerson was awarded the post of

Minister of the Second (Unitarian) Church in Boston. Even his

worst enemy could not deny his remarkable gift of speech-making.

But he later had to sever himself from the church as he failed to be

at one with his congregation regarding his method of teaching. He

simply left the church without attacking anyone. It was advisable,

he thought, that his congregation should have another pastor

according to their choice. But one of the reactionaries could not

help saying, "We are sorry for Mr. Emerson, but it certainly seems

as if he is going to hell." Neither are we to forget the immediate

retort made by a true seeker: "It does indeed look so. But I am sure

of one thing — if Emerson goes to hell, he will so change its

climate that it will become a popular resort for all the good souls of

Heaven."

Emerson's love of God was too deep for form and

convention. That was perhaps why he left his ministry in the

Unitarian Church of Boston. People below his level of culture

must be pitied. It is quite natural that they should have taken him

amiss. Emerson seems to have sailed "strange seas of thought,

alone," with deep self-knowledge. Emerson's truth, "To be great is

to be misunderstood," finds its exquisite parallel in Sri Aurobindo,

the greatest Seer of India:

Whoever is too great must lonely live,

Adored he walks in mighty solitude;

Vain is his labour to create his kins,

His only comrade is the Strength within.

Happily, two great contemporaries, Lincoln and Emerson,

offer an historic example of mutual appreciation. During the ever-

memorable Civil War in America, it was Emerson's inspiration

that offered "the best and the bravest words." He fully supported

President Lincoln in his mighty undertaking, and addressed him as

"the Protector of American Freedom." Neither could the President

remain silent. He honoured the seer in Emerson with his warm

appreciation: "The Prophet of American Faith."

"The Prophet of American Faith." Yes, but more truly a

Prophet of Universal Faith, a seer visualising the future in the

living present:

One day all men will be lovers, and every calamity will be

dissolved in the universal sunshine.

Tratando-se de um genuíno amante da Verdade, Emerson foi corajoso ao dizer: “Filantropia e caridade possuem certo ar de deboche.” É verdade que poucos, ou talvez ninguém, tenham impresso na tabuleta dos seus corações o grande ensinamento da Bíblia:

Para Emerson, poesia e filosofia não são meros enfeites. A filosofia foi um fator dinâmico formador da sua vida. Sobre Sri Chinmoy

Nascido em 27 de agosto de 1931, na pequena vila de

Shakpura, em Bengala Oriental, atual Bangladesh, Sri Chinmoy passou a maior parte de sua juventude em uma comunidade espiritual no sul da Índia, onde teve a oportunidade de assimilar as raízes da sabedoria oriental e ocidental e desenvolver sua própria visão interior e dedicação por um mundo melhor. Uma intensa prática de meditação, redação de obras literárias e participação em esportes – com especial destaque aos 100 metros rasos e decatlo – faziam parte do dia-a-dia.
