1 We are into our third month and many of our Members have been working diligently to improve the condition of the Lodge. Entertainment activities have increased due to a lot of work by Member volunteers, However, we must con- tinue our efforts to make things more attractive for our Members and potential Members. May has been a busy Month for the Lodge with several parties and other activi- ties which seemed to be enjoyed by all . Tommy Harper and Staff awarded $23,000 in scholarship funds, thanks to our Bingo receipts, to deserving stu- dents located in the local community. They were awarded based on ACT scores, School evaluations, and the Elks Lodge Scholarship Committee evalua- tions. The Lodge also received a $2000 grant for the Drug Awareness rally at the Harvest Youth Club. Sandi Henderson is the Host and will need volunteers to assist her with this operation. Volunteers for cooking and serving food would be appreciated. Grilled hamburgers and hot dogs will be the Entree. We would encourage more Members to use our facilities for their parties and other events. The food is great and the Patio has been rejuvenated which will provide a more inviting environment for varied events. Levoy Smartt is in the process of scheduling another of his fun-filled parties for Members and Guests in the near future. DJ Jerry Jean will again play the great songs you have become accus- tomed to in past for dancing or just relaxing and listening to great music. June promises to be another busy month, beginning with the Elks Charity Golf Tournament on June 7th. Chairman Bill Abbott and several volunteers have put in a lot of work to make this event a suc- cess; however, they need the assistance from all Members to get involved and help recruit players. Ask your friends to sign up, Elks Members or not, the Golf Tournament is open to the Public with a lot of great prizes, including a two year lease to a new Lincoln car and two free accommodations to Re- sorts in Las Vegas and Missouri. The Leading Knight, Brenda Miller, will Emcee the Flag Day Commemoration on June 14th at the Veterans Memorial Park. Some of the participants are Huntsville Mayor Tommy Battle, Madison; Mayor Tony Trulock; Lieutenant General Patricia McQuistion from Redstone Arsenal; the Color Guard; and many others. The purpose of Flag Day is to showcase the history of the Flag and its importance to the people of our Country. We encourage you to attend and support both events. A desperate needed clean-up in our Lodge is hopeful in the near future. Well be looking for ways to raise funds for this endeavor. Presently the Patio, which has just been thoroughly cleaned, needs a sealant in order to prolong the life of the wood. The cost is approximately $500. Donations, specifical- lyfor this project, may be made to anyone on the House Committee and would be greatly appreciat- ed. Suggestions on how to raise additional funds are encouraged and appreciated. Improvement of our facility is of the highest importance if we expect to attract groups within the local community for parties and other functions. Our loyal Members also deserve a lodge they can enjoy and feel a sense of pride when inviting family and close friends on special occasions and events. Your continued support and enthusiasm is important. We are into our third month and many of our Members have been working diligently to improve the condition of the Lodge. Entertainment activities have increased due to a lot of work by Member volunteers, However, we must con-tinue our efforts to make things more attractive for our Members and potential Members.

May has been a busy Month for the Lodge with several parties and other activi-ties which seemed to be enjoyed by all . Tommy Harper and Staff awarded $23,000 in scholarship funds, thanks to our Bingo receipts, to deserving stu-dents located in the local community. They were awarded based on ACT scores, School evaluations, and the Elks Lodge Scholarship Committee evalua-tions. June promises to be another busy month, beginning with the Elks Charity Golf Tournament on June 7th. The ELKs Call

FATHERS ARE WONDERFUL By Helen Steiner Rice

Fathers are wonderful people too little understood, And we do not sing their praises As often as we should…. For, somehow, Father seems to be The man who pays the bills, While Mother binds up little hurts And nurses all our ills… And Father struggles daily To live up to “his image” As protector and provider And “hero of the scrimmage”… And perhaps this is the reason We sometimes get the notion, That Fathers are not subject To the thing we call emotion, But if you look inside Dad’s heart, Where no one else can see You’ll find he’s sentimental And as “soft” as he can be… But he’s so busy every day In the grueling race of life, He leaves the sentimental stuff To his partner and his wife… But Fathers are just wonderful In a million different ways, And they merit loving compliments And accolades of praise, For the only reason Dad aspires To fortune and success Is to make the family proud of him And to bring them happiness… And like our Heavenly Father, He’s a guardian and a guide, Someone that we can count on To be always on our side.

Secretary’s Corner… Hurray for SUMMER! Finally it’s time for fun, relaxation, and warn weather. We now stand with 64 Mem-bers that haven’t paid their dues. Actually, that’s better than some Lodges are doing, but not good enough for Lodge #1648!Please encourage those listed to send payment and get back into the Lodge. It takes all of us working together to support all the fine ongoing and upcoming charities and events. The month of June will be busy with the Annual Huntsville Elks Charity Golf Tournament and Flag Day. We need everyone to be “paid up” and to participate in these worthwhile events. Currently we stand at 587 Active Members, 7 new Candidates, and 64 Delinquents. Again, let’s get these delinquents back in. Give a call to someone on the list and invite them back. An excellent way of showing you care is to pay or help pay someone’s dues for them. Several of our Members have already done that. Remember, “Elks Care, Elks Share”. I understand the Membership Committee is planning some special contests and gift “give-a-ways” to Members bringing in the most new Members. We not only welcome new Members, but we need our Members that haven’t renewed their Membership to pay their dues. MEMBERSHIP is important to all of us! Member Applications are in two places: in the foyer under the sign-in book and on the bar in a holder for them to be more visible and for your convenience in obtaining one. My motive is to keep “Membership” within easy eye/hand distance. The Secretary of-fice is open Tuesday and Thursday at noon. If you need any assistance at other times, please leave a written message with the bar-tender to be placed in my folder behind the bar. I will be HAPPY to assist you if I can! Sincerely,

JIMMY & STELLA MUSICK……………….. We wish to thank all our Elks Friends , who seem more like Family, for joining with us at the Patio Party in celebrating our “50th WEDDING ANNIVERSARY “ YOU ARE ALL SPECIAL!!!!!

ELKS NATIONAL FOUNDATION (ENF) 2013-2014 GRATTUDE GRANT Once again this year our Lodge has won the ENF GRATITUDE GRANT! Our Lodge has met this year’s GER Per-Capita giving goal to ENF which allowed us to apply for the $2,000, and we won it. The focus of this grant is the Harvest Youth Club that serves the youth of our community by providing after school care, summer care, tutoring, nourishment, and a safe haven in a community where the majority of the children live in poverty. This facility serves an essential role in developing children and strengthening fami-lies. Many of the children are being raised by single mothers, and where there are two parents, both work and must leave their children unsupervised. During the school year, students are transported to the Club from the elementary and mid-dle schools in the area where they receive tutoring, homework assistance, snacks, and supervision. Our Lodge would like to supplement some of the tuition fees; whereby, many of the chil-dren will be able to attend the Club during the summer months as well. In this summer session, our Lodge will provide a speaker to promote Drug Awareness with Elk Members on hand to assist with the distribution of materials, and we will also lend a helping hand to provide assistance with the Club’s Field Day. As you can see, our Lodge will need volunteers for this undertak-ing. If you are willing to give up a few hours to promote Drug Awareness and cook hamburgers and hotdogs for the Field Day, please let Exalted Ruler, Wayne Tucker or me know. What a blessing you will receive! Also, please consider donating to the ENF this year in order for our Lodge to be able to apply for this grant next year. Remem-ber, only Lodges that meet the GER Per-Capita giving goal to ENF are invited to apply. Our chairperson for ENF this year is Bob Bergh. He will be more than happy to accept your $10 do-nation. Phyllis Mann, Lodge Secretary

SCHOLARSHIPS and BINGO Recently our Lodge awarded twenty-three $1000 scholar-ships to some very deserving young people at the annual awards banquet. Our Lodge also contributes $5000 toward scholarships for Athens State University. Seeing those young recipients obtain their certificate for their scholarship is an amazing sight. This is all possible because of BINGO!

Please share your time and efforts assisting with Bingo on Sunday nights so our Lodge can continue to raise the bar for education for the youth of our community. If interested in helping with Bingo, contact Bob Bergh or any of your Lodg-es Officers. You will be a better Elk and person for contrib-uting a few hours each month.
