Exalted Ruler’s Message

My fellow Elks, Although we do appreciate our members’ opinions and/or advice about the operation of our Lodge, there is a proper way to offer it. It has been reported to me that some of our members have been harass-ing the bartenders with their complaints. Understand, the employees are doing what management has instructed them to do, if they intend to keep their jobs. Harassing them is not acceptable behavior. In fact I consider it “behavior unbecoming an Elk”. Those members who choose to contin-ue with this behavior can expect appropriate corrective action taken against them. If you have an issue with the daily operations of our Lodge Social Quarters please take them to the House Chair, Jim Bellamy or my-self. Preferably in private and in an appropriate environment. With that out of the way let's talk about the many positive things happening at our Lodge.

Here is an update on some of our major projects:

The parking lot expansion is rapidly coming to completion, this means more revenue for our lodge will soon follow.

The upgrades to the camping sites are well underway and the electrical and plumbing upgrades are in progress. As soon as the new electric ser-vice is put in place by FPL we will be reopening the camp sites.. I am excited to announce I have completed the programming of an “Online Registration System” that will be in place at reopening. You will be able to make reservations on your Cell Phones, Tablets or PC's without having to call the Lodge.

The slab for the pavilion is poured; we now await delivery of the steel roofing. I wish I had a solid date; our best estimate as of now is August.

Lastly, we have a new Elk Statue to replace the poor, abused Elk that currently welcomes our members and guests. We are currently working on the safest way to remove the current Elk and install the new one.

I want to thank everyone for making our Lodge a pleasant experience to visit. I’ve received numerous compliments from those visiting our Lodge on how warm and welcoming their visits have been. This makes my heart swell with pride; thank you for showing your fidelity.

Finally, congratulations to Sara McDavitt who is my selection for Elk of the Month for July. Sara, in addition to her normal officer duties (which she is a volunteer) has gone far above and beyond the call of duty in many events and committees showing her sincere dedication.

Have a Great July!

Lorin Austin, Exalted Ruler

If you are working on a dance, we will be glad to help. Our recent classes have been Rumba, West Coast Swing, and Night Club Two Step. If you missed the Lodge’s Great Gatsby Party, I can only say it was a superb event. Disney’s Z Street Band played dance music from the 1920’s on up to current hits. The decor, food, and service were top notch. Don’t miss out on the next special event, the Celebrate America Party on Saturday, July 7. Southern Style will be making great music. So, as Lee Ann Womack says,” I hope you’ll dance."

Anniversary Tidbits

The Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks (BPOE) is one of the premier charitable and patriotic organizations in the United States with more than $6 billion in donations. Last year alone, Elks Lodges across our country donated approximately $323 million in cash, gifts and time to make our communities better places to live.

On February 16, 1868, the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks was established and they elected Charles Algernon Sidney Vivian the son of a clergyman and a successful comic singer and dancer in the music halls of London to head it. Its social activities and benefit performances increased the popularity of the new Order. Membership grew rapidly. Elks traveling to other cities spread the word of the Brotherhood of Elks. Soon there were requests for Elks Lodges in cities other than New York. In re-sponse to these appeals, the Elks asked the New York State legislature for a charter authorizing the establishment of a Grand Lodge with the power to establish local Lodges anywhere in the United States. When the Grand Lodge Charter was issued, the founders then received the first local char-ter as New York Lodge No. 1 on March 10, 1871.

The St. Augustine Elks Lodge #829 was chartered on July 29, 1903, at a time when St. Augustine had a population of barely 2,000. At first, the Elks met in the Knights of Columbus rooms in the Model Land Company Building at the corner of St. George and Hypolita Streets. By the following year, the lodge had acquired the historic Worth House then located on Ma-rine Street. Sometime after 1910, the lodge moved from its quarters on Marine Street to the Lew Building on Cathedral Place. In May, 1932, our lodge purchased a three-story building on Bay Street (now Avenida Menendez), just south of where the Monterey Motel is located. After be-ing in several other locations in downtown St Augustine, the Lodge moved to its current location at 1420 A1A South in 1971.

ELKS 150th & Lodge 115th Anniversaries

This year marks the 150th Year of “Elkdom” and the Grand lodge is en-couraging all lodges to celebrate in their own special way.

The weekend of July 27, 28 and 29th of July (Friday, Saturday and

Sunday) has been chosen for our Lodge’s 150th Celebration. We

also will be celebrating the Lodge’s 115th anniversary.

This weekend will also be a membership drive as the Lodge will be open to the public for one and all. In addition, we’ve sent special invitations to local leaders explaining the event and asking that they attend.

The activities scheduled so far:

♦ On Friday, July 27th, we will be open during our regular hours (3 p.m. until 12 a.m.). A special Friday night dinner menu will be available, and “Southern Style” will entertain starting at 7:00 p.m.

♦ Saturday, July 28th is Family Day from 11 a.m. until 6 p.m. The social

quarters (lounge) will be open and we’ll have booths set up in the main hall with Elk officers and members on hand to explain our com-munity service programs to the public and answer questions about the Elks and our lodge.

♦ Bring the kids on Saturday for family-friendly games and activities in our outside areas, some classic cars and a delicious “cookout” menu.

♦ On Saturday, “Dewey Via and Moses Creek” will play in the Social

Quarters from 1-4 PM.

♦ After 7 p.m. on Saturday “Falling Bones” will provide a fun-filled evening for our members, guests and the public.

♦ On Sunday, we’ll be back to our normal hours of operation (1 p.m. until 10 p.m.) with great karaoke beginning at 4 p.m.

There will be other activities, especially on Saturday’s Family Day. Plan to come to the Lodge anytime during the weekend and bring your chil-dren and grandchildren to Family Day on Saturday.

We will need plenty of help during weekend; if you are interested in helping out even for a couple of hours, please contact Jimmy Dean or Peyton Jonas at [email protected]!

Father’s Day Lunch was a successful event. Our dining room was full of FABULOUS FATHERS with their families. We had over 60 in at-tendance, with free drinks for the Dads, and some door prizes.

Thank you to Rich for making “meatballs & gravy” before leaving for vacation, John for cooking for us and pulling the kitchen together, and to Sean at the bar for keeping those Dad’s hydrated. Thank you Rosie and Sara, for turning the dining room into a Father Friendly “Den”. Those mustaches rocked!!!!

The Great Gatsby was a fabulous success!!! Those in attendance were entertained by The Z Street Speakeasy Band and had a “Rip Roaring 1920’s” style kind of time. Those who donned the Great Gats-by attire were the “Cat’s Meow”. Keith Bailey did an outstanding job with the Heavy Hors d’ oeuvres, and boy were they heavy! Along with our own Chef John, they kept those platters full!! What a “Nifty Night”!! Our own bartenders, Sean, Sarah, Greg & Little Shawn totally outdid themselves. Sean’s wife, Alyssa Drake, made perfect Red Vel-vet Cupcakes topped with Black Feathers and Pearls to round out our Hors d’ oeuvres table. “Thank you’s” all around to the many people who helped make this night a GRAND success!!!!

Saturday, July 7th is our “Celebrate America” Event hosted by Jim & Peggy White. This event starts at 6:00pm. There will be Hamburgers and Hotdogs, Trivia, Apple Pie Bake-Off and prizes for the Most Pat-riotic Dressed Man, Woman, and Couple. Please note that there is “no charge” for this event!!

Sunday, July 22nd from 11:30-2:30 we will have a Rock Painting Class hosted by our very own artist, Mary Beach. Please see the table fly-ers for details.

Celebrate with us 150 years of Elkdom, July 27th, 28th and 29th…..an open to the public celebration of family fun, food, classic cars, Dewey Via & Moses Creek Band, Falling Bones Band and much more. Don’t miss out on this event, Co-Chaired by Peyton Jonas & Jimmy Dean.

Please make sure to check the table flyers for additional details on each event!!!
