MONEY MATTERS For September 2017 by Geri Eckert, Treasurer

WE DID IT.....WE BROKE A RECORD last month at our Sunday Jazz Session. We paid a guest band, paid the rent and STILL CAME OUT AHEAD!!! It's been a few years since I've been able to say that. Now how and why did this happen? Several reasons:

1. We had the best attendance in years. So a big thank you to all the Sacramento, Modesto and Stockton members who showed up to dance and listen to the music of "JAMBALAYA SWING." My goodness, the floor was jumpin' and it was so much fun to watch. We appreciate your participation and hope you come more often. 2. We had some wonderful donations from members who donated in memory of recent and past lost members. Thank you for your donation: ARDIE DUSH, MARLENA &DAVE TYGETT and NORMA BREWSTER from the Modesto Club. These cash donations are soooooo important and soooooo needed and appreciated. Thank you again. 3. All our BOARD MEMBERS, VOLUNTEERS and JAMMERS who used to pay "nothing" are now, beginning in August, being charged a $5 entrance fee. This was voted on by the board of directors in order to *increase our bank balance and keep our club afloat. It has proven be to be a wise decision because we brought in an extra $115 that we didn't have before. How great is that!!!!! INCOME: $891.50 door.....................................354. membership....................... 7.50 donations (memorials).........355 raffle.....................................147. tip jar (front desk)................. 28 EXPENSES: $849.62 rent..................................... .325. band.....................................500. delta rag (printing) ............. 14.82 stamps................................. 9.80 **July 31 bank balance: $4,407.09

Looking forward to seeing all of you again next month, Sept 3. ger~

SEEN AT THE SCENE - In August 2017 By Billie Ricker, Editor Emeritus - The Delta Rag

Geri’s report, “Money Matters” mentioned the new requirement for Volunteers (including jammers and board members) to pay $5 admission. Don’t worry though, rest assured that you volunteers who have been paying more than 5 dollars may continue to do so.

It was clearly a successful day, and if you were present, you surely enjoyed yourself. We had several guests from Sacramento demonstrating intricate dance maneuvers (“steps” is too tame a word for what they were doing), as well as our usual graceful and talented dancers. I gave Tony Moreira a dig in the ribs and told him that he and Delores and Cliff and I could have danced like that a few years ago if we wanted to. He looked at me like I had lost my last working brain cell and said, “We could not!” Gee I hate it when Tony is right! He brought 3 guests, so he's not all bad. All you dancers are welcome to come dance again on September 3rd; I saw you dancing up a storm to our jammers, so you know you will enjoy it. When Geri sang “Kansas City” I had to grab my walker. It tried to get out to the floor and start dancing by itself. I was so happy to hear from Ardie Dush, who has been a member since heck was a pup,. She is not able to come often any more to enjoy the music, but fondly remembers the wonderful times she enjoyed with us, and the dear friends who have meant so much to her. Her continuing subscription to The Delta Rag is much appreciated. It is always a pleasure to welcome a new member, and particularly this month to welcome Kay Williams. She is Mrs. Harry Williams. Last month Harry’s photo was in the newsletter, so I took her picture to be fair. I hope I didn’t forget to put film in my phone. Nice to see Helen Click with Bev Martin at the Admission desk. I was especially glad to see Jane O’Donnel and Bernie James, as they don’t make it very often, and I missed them last time they were here. I was glad our president, Frank Lindskoog, made it so that I didn’t have to be hug-less for another month. He is in a great deal of pain, so it was a difficult day for him. Marge Ramirez was here without Albert Galaviz. She said he is ill, but I didn’t get the particulars. I only know he’d have been here if he could. We were so worried about our intrepid raffle-honcho, Dave Tygett last month. He was in the hospital to have a couple of aneurysms repaired, which took hours and hours of surgery. Then we heard that while in the hospital he suffered a stroke. Being one tough cookie, he had no ill effects from the stroke, and is recovering by leaps and bounds. Marlena, on the other hand, is exhausted from worry, but very very grateful for his recovery. It will come as no surprise to long time members of SJDJS to hear that in the absence of Dave and Marlena Tygett, our secretary, Barbara Baughman sold the raffle tickets and ran the raffle. She doesn’t seek the limelight, but if there is something that needs to be done, it very often has been Barbara who stepped in quietly and got it done. I must compliment Ginger Devaney on her kindness, even though it causes me great embarrassment. Ginger was collecting her raffle prize, and getting her picture taken, and I was standing there with my thumb in my mouth holding a raffle ticket with the wrong number on it. And, so that I would not have to turn around and walk back feeling foolish, Ginger included me in her picture, and walked back with me. I tell you, I am going to name my next child after that woman!

NEWS FROM THE VEEP (Vice President/Music Director) Carl Kaiser — For September 2017 Summer 2017 has been very good for the SJDJS as we continue to fil the chairs and dance floor at our monthly session. In addition, it is a good thing that the Jambalaya Swing Band was in town. The small big band (11 members) is big by our standards and provided the music for our very able dancers! It is always a great reunion for me personally to see this band because the band, like me until recently, is from the east bay

area. I have known and played with some of the members of this band for up to forty years. Many thanks to Ken Brock, leader and arranger of most of the music of the JSB, for providing us with the big band sounds we all love. When it was time to give the band a break, the jammers once again showed their fine form. With our neighbors to the north (STJS) meeting on OUR sacred 1st Sunday, we were a little short of jammers, but those in attendance were a mighty musical force! Thank you to the August jammers - Greg Ayala, Pat Bradley, Geri Eckert, Charlie Gehlbach, Bob Edson, Carl Kaiser, Frank Lindskoog, and Dick Lockwood. And a last set sit-in by Bob Sakoi. Speaking of jammers, our September session will be another Jam-a-Roo Sunday as we celebrate the Labor Day weekend playing our kind of music. Jammers, you heard from me and, therefore, I would like to hear from you so I can schedule groups and/or individuals to play at our September session. It was mentioned a while back that it appeared that the SJDJS jammers were having fun as they were playing. I was in a group called The Illusions from the late ’70’s to our last performance in 2010. We started together in our 20’s, played each others weddings, anniversaries and in a few cases, funerals. Toward the end of our run, we talked about our grandchildren during breaks. We would joke around and yuck it up between tunes and have a great time. That band, like so many others, was our second family. The thread that brought us together - music. Indeed, music brings people together as band members, dancers or just folks who love to listen and watch the music. Enjoy the middle day of the Labor Day weekend with the SJDJS jammers. See you at the club! Want to Contact Me? Send me an E Mail: [email protected]

SPLINTERS FROM

$5.00 ADMISSION FEE FOR ALL JAMMERS, VOLUNTEERS AND CLUB OFFICERS:

We began collecting this Admission Fee at our August 6, 2017 Session At our June 2017 Board of Directors Meeting, after hearing our Treasurer’s Report, we knew that we had to take some measures to secure the financial future of our Society. We voted unanimously to charge all Volunteers, all Board Members and all Jammer Musicians an entry fee of $5.00 at the door. The existing admission fee of $8.00 for Society Members, $12.00 for non-members and the student fees remain unchanged. We will continue the “First Time Guest And One Other Person Get in Free” program. (See the Coupon on Page 10) Our Guest Band Members and one guest will (of course) not be charged this fee. We also discussed the Printing and Mailing costs for the Delta Rag. Though most of our Members get the Delta Rag via email, our mailing costs are still almost $400 a year. President Lindskoog is surveying all our Society Members who request a mailed copy of the Monthly Delta Rag. We hope that these Members have a friend, neighbor or relative who will receive the Delta Rag via email and then give that Member a printed copy. Until the survey is finalized, we will continue to mail a copy of the Delta Rag to those Members. Your Board sincerely hopes you understand the need for the changes.

P. P. (PAST PRESIDENT) SEZ - For September 2017 Fish-horn: A horn that produces a loud and penetrating sound, used by a fishmonger to announce that the catch is in. (Source: Wiki-Pedia) A Soprano Saxophone player has a large cross to bear. Enduring the

innumerable jokes about your “Fish horn.” The jokes about soprano saxes are rivaled only by those about banjos and accordions. Here are a few of the many: Use an Accordion, go to Jail. Where is the best place to hide your soprano sax so no one will steal it? In a banjo case. But, don’t bother! No one wants to steal your soprano sax anyway. What’s is perfect pitch for a soprano sax? Grab it by the small end and see how far you can throw it. Q: How do you make a million dollars playing jazz? A. Start off with 2 million. Q: What does a soprano saxophone and a baseball have in common? A: People cheer when you hit either of them with a baseball bat. Q: Why do saxophonists leave their cases on their dashboard? A: So they can park in handicap spaces. Q:What is the range of the soprano sax? A: The world record is about 57 yards. Q: How many in-tune soprano sax players can you fit in a phone booth? A: All of them. Q: What's the difference between a soprano saxophonist and a vacuum cleaner? A: A vacuum cleaner doesn't suck until you plug it in. source: http://www.jokes4us.com/miscellaneousjokes/musicjokes/ saxophonejokes.html Once upon a time: A truthful man, finding a musical instrument in the road, asked the name of it, and was told that it was a fish-horn. The next time he went fishing he set his nets and blew the fish-horn all day to charm the fish into them. But, but at nightfall there were not only no fish in his nets, there were none along that entire part of the coast. Here’s The rest of the story as promised last month: How I “Fit in,” playing this soprano sax with an Arkansas down-home, country blues band in keys that only string players could love. (A, B, E, G). Did you notice the absence of flats? We did tunes I have never heard of (not before nor since). As I recall, that home-brew clear liquor we done drunk right out of fruit jars was mighty good. And, it made the playin’ a might easier too! So….how did I play in those very hard keys? As we have already discussed, the Soprano sax is famous for not playing in tune anyway. The answer was to pull the mouthpiece as far out as possible and then lip down even a bit more to false-tune to the key the band was playing. My brain said I was playing in my comfortable keys and the horn said “Naw Y-Aint’!” And the band said “Yew be playin Rat nass fer the band Ta hear. Y’all be a fittin rat in .” Your September 2017 U Tube Homework Assignment: Bix Beiderbecke playing There’ll Come a Time. Nice up tempo...great tune. Really great pictures from back in the day too! (Warning! One or two very brief seim-nude pictures. So, women and children cover your eyes.) Personnel: Frank Trumbauer, Cm-sx/ Bix Beiderbecke, c / Bill Rank, tb / Jimmy Dorsey, cl, as / Chester Hazlett, as / Rube Crozier, ts / Min Leibrook, bsx / Matt Malneck, vn / Lennie Hayton, p, cel / Carl Kress, g / Harold McDonald, d. The SJDJS sponsored Freddy Spitzer's grandson, Dustin Huntzinger, for the 2017 Sly Park Jazz Camp, put on by the Sacramento Trad Jazz Society (STJS TEAGARDEN YOUTH JAZZ CAMP). The camp ended last Saturday at a concert given by the campers! Dustin had a wonderful time and did our jazz club proud! He was the only cornet player in the band. He was playing Freddy's Benge cornet! His band was called "MINOR IMPACT". The three tunes they played were; Everybody Loves My Baby", "When I Grow Too Old To Dream", and "I Never Knew". In the picture are two former members of "The Barkin' Dawg" youth jazz band, Rik Nishimori and his wife, Katie Nishimori, and unfortunately, me...darn it! Should have taken a pic of just Dustin Huntzinger! The "STJS TEAGARDEN YOUTH JAZZ CAMP" and "THE SACRAMENTO TRADITIONAL JAZZ

SOCIETY" thanked all of the jazz clubs who sponsored student campers for their financial support. Article and Picture Submitted by Bob Romans, The Cell Block 7.
