MONEY MATTERS: For January2017 I trust you all had a wonderful Christmas with friends and/or relatives... and New Years is just ahead of us. As a matter of fact, we can all spend NEW YEARS DAY together because that's our Stockton Jazz Sunday

date....Jan 1. How amazing is that??????? I can't remember the last time that has happened ?!#!&%@+&.... I'm very pleased to report that we had a wonderful turnout in December; the most people we've had in many a moon. The room was full of happy faces and the happiest was mine. (as treasurer) More people, more money to our club....I have no shame!!! cha-ching !!!! We had a great response to the raffle; the largest amount taken in this year. Thank you so much you raffle contributors; both those of you buying raffle tickets and all those who donate gifts for the raffle, which, by the way, includes LARRY TYRELL who goes out and buys gifts to donate, rarely requesting a reimbursement. Such a good guy. And speaking of good guys, our music coordinator, CARL KAISER, very often subsidizes the band check when the charge is beyond the club's standard payment. Thanks you two! And then we have the cash donations. Santa Claus came in the form of 3 loyal club members who gave generously. Our General Account, Memorial and Youth accounts were the precipitants of 3 contributors: thank you FRANK LINDSKOOG for your most generous donation. And to BARBARA BAUGHMAN and JERRY and GERI COX. We're so appreciative of everyone's support. Thank you, Thank you...... INCOME...........................................$2,039 door.................................288 dues.................................460 donations........................1,060 raffle.................................178 kitty jars............................ 53 EXPENSES......................................$905.54 rent.....................................300 band...................................500 Rag printing......................... 23.54 postage............................... 47 transfer to youth acct.............35 Hope to see you on New Years Day at Stockton Elks; you know the way Health and happiness wished to all in 2017.....lets have a ball!!!! PRESIDENTS REPORT - For January 2017

To: All of us 2016 survivors, lets gather on January One to ring in the new year a second time, or first if you were in bed on the 31st before Midnight. Our next opportunity to be together on the day is another 8 years away I think. [and we certainly cannot count on that can we] Bring your rowdiest friends. We will be picking the best of you for a

Kazoo band, accompanied by spoons-players for percussion. Call up a YouTube video for spoons- playing inspiration. Our treasurer Geri, has suggested that we ask permission to bring forward the Elks Club curtains at the back of the main room to engender a smaller more cozy atmosphere and dance floor. We shall pursue that with their management. That would be another facet of our passive evolution to a music and social club. We are on firm ground financially. What remains is for you Members to do your part in supporting us through your attendance. Our Boards part is to bring on musicians and maintain club stability. URT of the month: Of all the physical materials/elements on earth water is the only entity which survives cycling [sink to river to ocean to clouds to rain] while remaining nearly 100% intact! So strong is its' chemical bonding. Not any of the earths gases, soils, ores, sands do so: When acted upon by earthly forces they chemically change. So what you say? Well it means that every drop of water you drink or use is millions of years old and has been who-knows-where on earth. That could include all of the latrines of the world's civilizations! My brother, a clergyman retired in Florida, was asked to marry a nice Jewish lady to a man of Japanese descent. They met while she was vacationing in Hawaii and she had charm sufficient to attract him to the mainland. My brother, not known for being broadminded, casually asked about their meeting and dating. Well it was about a year ago, Dec. 7th to be exact said she smiling wryly. No sooner had I told him my name, Pearl Swartz, than he attacked me! Said he couldnt help himself- it was in his DNA. Now here we are. Yikes, more information than I intended to evoke said my brother, embarrassed but smiling as well.

I hope to see many of you on New Years Day. Your Prez.

OUR DECEMBER 2016 GUESTS: THE MISSION GOLD JAZZ BAND

  • Page 5

SEEN AT THE SCENE IN December 2016 By Billie Ricker, Editor Emeritus - The Delta Rag

It sure felt good to see all your smiling faces at the December session with Mission Gold JB on stage. It felt like we were breathing new life in the ole jazz club! At the end of the day, the band leader, John Soulis walked around the room, thanking the audience for

coming. I thought that was a very nice touch. Did Mission Gold play Bogalusa Strut, or was that just a familiar riff from it? I used to hear Good Time Levee Stompers play that. Geri Eckert sang Satin Doll and it would not leave my head for days. I dont know the words to it, so my mind just hummed it over and over; half the time I didnt even remember what song I was humming. But once in a while I would think, Mellow Rooney! and I dont know why. Does Geri say that when she sings it? I dont think so, but I bet she can tell me where Im getting it. Im pretty sure my brain does not spontaneously spit out mellowrooneys on its own. Sharon Soulis presented The Cake to the winners of the cake walk, Beverly Gunderson and Jessica Robertson. I apologize for not taking their picture. Ill try to get one next month. Maybe we will have another cake walk next month, although I seriously doubt there will be a prize offered.. Thanks to Janice Stock for bringing Beverly and Jessica. I had a lovely chat with Julie Schumacher. She is one of the more recent volunteers at the Admissions Desk. She recently hosted 5 great-grandchildren and their parents for a holiday dinner, and will have Christmas dinner with family, but allow somebody else to handle that one. Not that it would faze her. She is no stranger to stress, having been the United Cerebral Palsy CEO for 27 years. She relaxes by painting in water colors once a week, and playing with Soo Ling, her Lhasa apso dog. And of course, listening to Dixieland jazz.
