MONEY MATTERS For July 2017 by Geri Eckert, Treasurer

We had a wonderful day with the NATURAL GAS JAZZ BAND playing three sets for us. Toes were tapping and skirts were twirling as we all participated in the Parasol Parade. the club; one from TONY MOREIRA and one from the STILLWELL FAMILY. Thank you both for your support and generosity. We also had a donation from members who have asked to remain anonymous. PRESIDENT’S REPORT - For July 2017 Your Prez. Frank Lindskoog

NOTICE: ADMISSION FEE CHANGE COMING IN AUGUST. READ ON: Hello all. In this month of the birthday anniversary of our nation we music-oriented

ought to be thinking of the stirring rousing variety forthcoming in patriotic marches. No-place-for-piano notwithstanding, I love them. Alas, the generations third and newer to

ours don’t feel this way, for the most part anyway. Still no Billie graces our sessions. We await her return, but not as patiently as before. Our club life goes on, just eking out a living as it were. Your board is about to impose a minimum $5 fee on musicians voluntary (yeah right) to exercise one’s chops, as noted this past month. Musi-cians are not entirely altruistic. Enjoy it not nearly as much it’s true, but it is no secret that we would even play to an imaginary audience. And, Your Board has voted to attempt converting to Email, the short list of members receiving their newsletters via USPS. We need those dollars elsewhere. Your Prez. Is calling on everyone’s help by asking that they find a friend or family member or neighbor to receive the newsletter by e mail and deliver the newsletter to our Member. URT of the month: Often I think of how important psychologically is the vessel and shape of the food and drink we enjoy. It is far from mere taste. Consider the drinking of fine wine or beer from a cup; Same-quality spaghetti pasta & meat sauce served in the shape of macaroni rather than long strands; a Martini served in a water glass; a prime cut of meat served sliced. Even the sightless would notice. Lawyers are famously tolerant & self-deprecating about jokes re their chosen occupation. (Perhaps they must be, given its' reputation. Even playwright Shakespeare back in the sixteenth century felt compelled to weigh in via one of his characters.) So I feel no trepidation in relating this little anecdote. I was sitting in a bar talking to the stranger next to me when a guy stomps in and takes the opposite adjacent seat. He slams down a 20 and orders a whiskey-any whiskey. “All law-yers are creeps” he proclaims loudly, apparently just having come from an encounter with one or more. From my other side I hear my previous conversationalist; “I resent that”. Turning back to him I said “I take it you are an attorney”. “Absolutely not no way” he said, as if to clear his good name,” I'm a creep.” Next board meeting to be announced. Bye for now, your Prez.

Recently I was given a box of past "Delta Rags" that were a collec-tion addressed to Mary Higgins. In looking through this collection I found a copy dated January 2005 that had a picture of the fea-tured band that month. It was the Blue Street Jazz Band. The band leader pictured was Dave Ruffner. Related to this article is the coincidence that this past week I was in New Orleans, and I walked into the Cafe Beignet in the French Quarter. There I found Dave, playing his trombone, singing, and leading a very good trio. Amazing.

SEEN AT THE SCENE - for July 2017 By Billie Ricker, Editor Emeritus - The Delta Rag

I sure hope you-all will be at the July session. I’m planning to be there with bells on! And I have missed seeing Audrey and Beverly at the Admission desk when I come in, and later, Edie, Elizabeth, Alice, Judy, Christina, and others who are holding down the

desk. And I miss seeing Albert and Marge on the dance floor, as well as Bob and Philinda and a whole bunch of others. hope Dave and Marlena won’t be off celebrating Independence Day somewhere else. I am so anxious to see them. I’ve been saving my quarters so I can buy lots of raffle tickets. I may have to bring the quarters in a suitcase. I think Geri Eckert just turned pale when I said that. I forgot it is the treasurer who has to tote the quarters home. I was only joking, Geri. Actually I saved 75 cent pieces, not quarters. I’m glad July is a Jam-a-roo month, because I have been pining to hear our jammers. I can’t wait to see who will be here. I trust Frank and Dick will be on hand, and Larry and maybe a Carl or two. (drums and t-bone). I understand our Music Director, Carl Kaiser had an excused absence last month, but I’m betting he’ll be here ramrodding the music. I had an excused absence too, so I’m bringing a note from my doctor. It says, “Get this woman out of here! Please! Tell her she looks great. I do Not want to see her back here.” So whatever you do, please don’t tell me I look great. I’ll know you just read the memo. It is with deep sadness that I report that Roberta Conrad passed away on June 5th. She was a charter member, and never missed a session if she could help it. She and her late husband Larry were fixtures on the dance floor, but she had just as much fun off the dance floor. Her laughter would peal like a bell through the room. Her famous line was, “Oh I didn’t have a job, I was a play-girl. I didn’t have time to work.” Her days as a play-girl paid off, and after Larry’s death, she stayed busy and her smile returned and stayed in place. She was a fan of all the bands and musicians, but the Cell Block 7 was a particular favorite, and I know they will miss her smiling face, as will all who knew her. Information will be forthcoming regarding a future memorial luncheon for Roberta. Another blow to our hearts was the news that Kathy Felkins died on

June 12th. She was the quintessential jazz fan. She loved our club; the peo-ple, the music, the dancing, the happy feeling she got from every session she was able to attend. When she could no longer attend, she still rejoined for years so that she could keep track of her many friends, and vicariously enjoy the festivities. She was a gal who knew how to enjoy life. I never saw her wearing a frown. Her son Ron said, “Few things absorbed her interest and devotion during her senior years like her participation with the SJDJS.” Kathy served on the Board of Directors as treasurer some years ago. We will be notified of the date of a memorial service. Rest in Peace, dear friends. Editors Note: WELCOME BACK BILLIE!!!

NEWS FROM THE VEEP (Vice President/Music Director) Carl Kaiser — For July 2017 While it is quite possible that nobody realized I was absent from the June session, in fact I was there. Mentally! In my mind, the following occurred that day. Our guests, the renowned Natural Gas Jazz Band, were fabulous as they always are, and have been for over 45 years. The musical selections were carefully chosen and featured the fine

musicianship of the band’s members. The dancers flooded the dance floor and the Elks Club was awash with the sounds of great jazz. Many thanks to Phil Crumley, leader of this wonderful band, for their fine music. In actuality, all three of my grandchildren graduated from their level of school (high, elemen-tary and pre schools) in Texas and therefore I was not able to attend the June session. I am, how-ever, sticking with the above story as it regards the Natural Gas Jazz Band! The jammers for the day were Bob Edson, Geri Eckert, Mark Kramer, Frank Lindskoog, Dick Lockwood, Jim Lucas, Larry Tyrell and Chris Williams. They probably sounded great. In fact, since they always sound great, let’s say they sounded great! Many thanks to the fabulous jammers! You may have noticed that there were not many jammers at the June session... Several were either still recovering from the Sacramento Music Festival or simply just resting up for our July session. Yes, our July session is a jammers only session. As we have done in the past, we will re-cruit musicians from around the world to perform at SJDJS’s version of our country’s birthday party bash at the Elks Club on July 2nd! This year, our session falls in the middle of the four day week-end. You will not need to contend with very much traffic that day! We hope to see you there. Want to Contact Me? SPLINTERS FROM YOUR BOARD

$5.00 ADMISSION FEE FOR ALL JAMMERS, VOLUNTEERS AND CLUB OFFICERS: We will begin collecting this Admission Fee at our August 6, 2017 Session

At our June 2017 Board of Directors Meeting, after hearing our Treasurer’s Report, we knew that we had to take some measures to secure the financial future of our Society. We voted unanimously to charge all Volunteers, all Board Members and all Jammer Musicians an entry fee of $5.00 at the door. The existing admission fee of $8.00 for Society Members, $12.00 for non-members and the student fees remain unchanged. We will continue the “First Time Guest And One Other Person Get in Free” program. (See the Coupon on Page 10) Our Guest Band Members and one guest will (of course) not be charged this fee. We also discussed the Printing and Mailing costs for the Delta Rag. Though most of our Members get the Delta Rag via email, our mailing costs are still almost $400 a year. President Lindskoog is surveying all our Society Members who request a mailed copy of the Monthly Delta Rag. We hope that these Members have a friend, neighbor or relative who will receive the Delta Rag via email and then give that Member a printed copy. Until the survey is finalized, we will continue to mail a copy of the Delta Rag to those Members. Your Board sincerely hopes you understand the financial need for these changes.

P. P. (PAST PRESIDENT) SEZ - For July 2017 Our June 4th Session was certainly a learning experience for me. Carl Kaiser asked me to stand in for him and take care of the ‘Set’ Board as he would be traveling out of state on that day. No problem. He showed me where the board and the easel is kept. We cleverly put the eraser and the temporary felt tip pen in my tenor sax case.

Having done this job once, several years ago, I agreed that this would be a simple enough task. Had our previous VP/MD Bill Sharp been there, I would have dumped (aka: delegated) the task to him. With pen and eraser in hand on game day I noted a small problem - one that Carl didn’t tell me about. We have four jam sets, one raffle and three guest band sets. Here is some simple math for you: That makes for a total of seven columns, even if you leave out the no-brainer raffle slot. A quick examination of the Set Board found only five columns. I know we use this board all the time. so what is wrong with this picture? The solution: Start over in the left column after the fourth set. Much like using the carriage return on a typewriter. If your children or grandchildren are reading this, you will probably have to tell them what a carriage return is. Or, for that matter, what a typewriter is. I took pictures of the Board throughout the day so Carl could write his article about jammers. He got the jammer information correct without seeing the pictures or asking me. A couple of months ago, I wrote about my quarter-bent soprano sax. So now, back to the more of that story. When I was Chiefing in Jackson, around 1983, the City of Jackson had a high school with maybe 300 or less total enrollment. Jackson High School (AKA Argonaut High) had a

marching band of more than 100 musicians. They literally blew the doors off the store fronts whenever they marched downtown. The School Music Director (Mr. Wes Hill) knew of my love of music. So, one day he comes in to the police station to tell me that he has an old silver, bad smelling, ugly soprano sax complete with a rotten case, He no longer has printed music for it and no one has played it for many years. Would I like it? Free? Otherwise he will throw it away! Does the Bear relieve himself in the woods, thinks I? Less than a nanosecond passed before I acquired the horn, (sight unseen). He had truly described it. Stuck keys, blackened bad finish (silver with a gold bell), stinky and rotten case, no mouth-piece. But, the little “American Professional” Quarter Bent Soprano Sax now had a new home. Off it goes to Taylor Music (now USA Music) in Aberdeen, South Dakota. Back it comes in a new case, completely refinished, some 2 months and $500 later it plays great. Lots of questions like “Is it a saxello?” “No”. “What is it?” “I don’t know”. Research finds it is a quarter bent soprano, c.1928, manufactured for American Professional by the Martin Company. Usually not known to play in tune with itself. Anyone who has ever played a soprano sax will know this is not hard to believe. Next month I’ll tell you about bursting a guy’s bubble with it in Little Rock.

Shameless commercial: The Weenie Brigade will again be playing in Jackson at the Jackson Lions Club ‘THIRD OF JULY’ Family picnic and GIANT fireworks show. Yes, the 3rd of July. Held in Jackson at the Jackson Jr. High Field off of Hoffman street. Weenie Brigade so named because we play for hot dogs. Our only pay. Band members you will recognize are: Bill Sharp, Carl Kaiser, Geri Eckert, Mark Kramer, Larry Tyrell, Charlie Gehlbach, Dannie Balser, Nancy Kreis and Family, Chris Williams, Mike Brosius, Dick Lockwood (AKA: Colonel Mustard) and countless others that I am forgetting. Live Music from 5:30 to dark and then fireworks for 45 minutes like you have never seen. All for free! Kids games, bingo, food for purchase, giant raffle. No booze cuz it’s on school grounds. Lots of fun and safe surroundings. Come celebrate the Nation’s Birthday in small town America with us! You won’t be sorry you did. Handicapped parking available if you get there early enough (5’ish). Bring a picnic blanket, chairs and your favorite munchie food.
