Welcome to Dead North 2017

What you’re about to see is unlike anything ever been produced in the North. Over 30 films were made this year for Dead North! Nearly double from last year and the quality and originality just keeps going up every year. You are about to watch films that are all very different from horror, sci-fi, fantasy and lots of comedy interspersed. It’s a real kitchen sink of weirdness here at Dead North and we love it all.

This festival would not exist without the insane amount of work put in by all the filmmakers, their cast, crews, friends and family who were most likely driv-en nuts by all of us for the last few months. Thank you to everyone who took time out of their busy lives to walk down this twisted road with us once again. This is epic community filmmaking at its finest and you are all heroes.

Let Dead North 2017 be a battle cry to all of us living here North of 60 that there is no longer any doubt about the level of talent, skill and vision that lurks within each Northerner. This is the 5th year for Dead North and it is now changing the face of the Northern film industry each time someone new signs up for the challenge. Simply put, you are a part of history by supporting this event. We are surrounded by like-minded folks, tough but kind Northerners who have a taste for the strange, weird, silly and macabre and we here at Dead North can’t imagine a better place to be.

Let’s do this.

Want to learn how to shoot someone in the head without going to jail? Special effects guru Matt Aebig is back this year with a new workshop that is going to be horrifyingly amazing. Over the course of an afternoon Matt will show us how to do several different practical SFX gags that are very realistic but also easy for us to do up here in the North on our own. From bullet wounds to how to make a knife stick out of one’s chest and basic FX makeup, Matt will help us on our journey to better horrify and delight our audiences.

This workshop is 2 hours long and will be repeated immediately after the first workshop is complete. Late joiners from the first workshop can start again from the beginning with the newcomers. Those from the first class who’d like to stay and finesse their new SFX skills are welcome to do so. Bring clothing that can get fake blood on it!

The Northern Film Industry: Andrew ConnorsWhere: Capitol Theatre When: Saturday February 25th 1-2 PMCost: Free!Registration: Open to the public

Andrew will chat about big picture Northern production and distribution from a cultural point of view.
