Doing Good!
Time out! Take a moment to breathe deeply
and put on your humility hat….
What you’re about to hear requires
perspective; namely, that anytime God
receives glory in us or through us it is
entirely His doing and to His credit. Got that
humility hat fitting snuggly now?
Last week I attended Leader Lab hosted by our Alabama Baptist
State Convention in Montgomery. For two and a half days I sat at
the feet of Richard Blackaby as he spoke on spiritual leadership.
What a privilege to learn from this godly man – the son of Henry
Blackaby who authored the well known resource Experiencing
God. As I made my way through the Baptist Building to various
plenary sessions and workshops I encountered several of our state
convention leaders and staff. In just 48 hours the word of our
ministry in Abbeville had spread to Montgomery and throughout
the leadership of our state convention. Without fail each person
thanked First Baptist Headland for serving our brothers and sisters
of First Baptist Abbeville in their time of bereavement. One
person summarized it well, “You all were the hands and feet of
Jesus to that congregation! That’s what being the body of Christ
is all about!”
Wow! What a blessing to hear that! What an honor it was for us
to be useful to our Master in reaching to those dear people. Thank
you, church family for loving First Baptist Abbeville well! Thank
you for stepping up and serving through praying, organizing the
meal, preparing a dish, and traveling to Abbeville to serve!
Fantastic! Thanks and glory be to God!
Paul’s words are fitting…So then, while we have opportunity, let
us do good to all men, and especially to those who are of the
household of the faith. (Galatians 6:10)
Speaking of doing good…
The Gideons and Auxiliary – It encourages us all to see godly
men and women having an impact for Christ and His kingdom
through Scripture distribution and personal witness. Several of
our church members serve Christ in the Henry County Camp of
The Gideons International. They are leaders, servants and
witnesses of Jesus in our county and worldwide. Thank you
church family for supporting their efforts financially last Sunday
morning!
Our Student Missionaries – Middle School and High School
students are becoming “infected” with God’s heart for all peoples.
That includes Haitians and Cubans in south Florida and senior
adults in Cleveland, Tennessee. Our students’ testimonies Sunday
night were sincere, heartfelt and deeply moving. To hear of our
students sharing Scripture verses, leading in prayer and explaining
the gospel to people very different from themselves blessed our
hearts. One adult shared, “Listening to these students gives me
hope!”
And let us not lose heart in doing good, for in due time we shall
reap if we do not grow weary. (Galatians 6:9)
Keep Doing Good!

The Alabama Baptist
On Sunday, July 28 we recognize our state
Baptist paper for its important role in the lives
of Baptists. It is a vital link in keeping us
informed about what God is doing in Alabama and around
the world. It gives us new ideas for reaching our commu-
nity for Christ, examines important social issues from a
biblical perspective and helps us grow as Christian disci-
ples.
To receive your weekly Alabama Baptist newspaper, fill
out the bulletin insert on Sunday and drop it in the offering
plate.

First Baptist Church,
To all of you for your expressions of kindness by the cards,
calls, and a caring of prayers, I thank you for myself and my
family.
You are a reflection and a sweet aroma of Christ Himself in
your remembrances, encouragement and support for us in
our time of need.
May God’s grace continue to lead you into joy for Himself
as He desires all of us to be. We sing, “They will know we
are Christian by our love.” You are this kind of people.
From the heart,
Ethelene Warren
Dear Brother Cecil &
Church Family,
Last week was truly one that warranted superlatives:
The almost unfathomable death of our dear, dear
pastor, Michael Whitt,
The unbelievable number of mourners at the visitation
and funeral, and
The unparalleled show of Christian love and sympathy
by your congregation in bringing and serving such a
wonderful meal - and it was wonderful. Thank you,
thank you!
In Christian love,
Thomas & Elizabeth Starling
