EASTER SUNDAY

APRIL 21, 2019 Easter changes everything. Having been raised from the dead, Jesus shatters the frightful images that haunt humanity. Betrayal, torture, crucifixion, death, burial—these terrors pale in the brilliant glory of Jesus resurrected. Today’s psalm guides our response to God’s power: “it is wonderful in our eyes.” Today is indeed a day for wonder, for gasping in astonishment at Jesus’ resurrection. For all of human history, death had been final. In the Acts of the Apostles, though, Peter testifies that Jesus, who was publicly executed, was raised to life by God. John’s Gospel admits that the disciples “did not yet understand the Scripture that he had to rise from the dead.” Even Jesus’ closest friends were not expecting this innovation: life after death. In response to the Easter miracle, Paul tells us to become “a fresh batch of dough.” Everything, even our very selves, must become new. Easter changes everything.

TREE OF LIFE Sometimes the story of Easter seems so familiar that we yawn at its old-fashioned quaintness. The “Good News” is, after all, a couple thousand years old. Today, however, our readings remind us that we are a fresh creation in the risen Lord. Today, we marvel at the newness of Jesus. Today, we praise God for the startling way he chooses to unlock eternal life for us.

When Peter speaks in the Acts of the Apostles, he calls Jesus’ cross a “tree.” Peter’s word choice invites us to remember another tree in scripture, the tree from which Adam and Eve selfishly ate the forbidden fruit. That tree in the Garden of Eden brought death to the human race; Jesus’ tree brings life. Peter explains the purpose of our new life: we must believe in Jesus and ask forgiveness for our sins. We must leave behind the selfish disobedience of the tree of death and embrace the way of self-sacrifice Jesus modeled on the tree of life.

ST. ANTHONY’S YOUTH AND FAMILY MINISTRY Easter Egg Hunt- On Sunday, April 21st after the 9am Mass, we invite all children 12 and under to join us for our annual Easter egg hunt. So, hop on over to the lawn in front of the school for some Easter fun as a parish community. Please park behind the school.

MAGNETS FUNDRAISER Easter Auto Magnets designed by two local parishioners will be available on April 27 and 28th after all Masses. Whatever you choose to donate will be sent to Fr. Marc, the founder of the Hope Village orphanage in Southwest Haiti. The orphanage houses and feeds hundreds of children. Besides receiving an academic education the students are trained in the building trades. Thus far over $118,000 has been raised via the magnet program. Every cent was sent to the orphanage as the magnets are donated and there is no “middleman” involved. Volunteers needed for all Masses. Contact Dr. Gregory at 845-215-5715.

SHRINE TO THE UNBORN AT ST. ANTHONY’S - A Shrine to the Unborn is installed in St. Anthony’s Shrine Church. The centerpiece of the shrine is an image of Our Lady of Perpetual Help. A Book of Life is enshrined there. Those who have suffered the loss of an unborn child, through stillbirth, miscarriage or abortion, or of a child who lived for just a short time, may have his or her name inscribed in the Book. If you wish to have an unborn child included; applications are available at St. Anthony’s Church office 623-2138 between 8:30am & 3:30pm. There is no fee but donations will be received with gratitude.

THE RACHEL MINISTRY Every 20 seconds an unborn child is aborted in the United States. In the 30 years since Roe vs. Wade, the U.S. Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion on demand, the death toll has reached over 55 million. But the statistics do not document the other casualties: the mothers, fathers, grandparents and friends who are emotionally and spiritually affected. The Rachel ministry is a CONFIDENTIAL ministry for those scarred by abortion, miscarriage or stillbirth. Come and heal every third Monday of the month at the Marian Shrine in the Cafeteria Building in West Haverstraw, at 7:00pm. The next meeting is on May 20th. H.A.N.D.S. (Healing and Nurturing Distraught Survivors) H.A.N.D.S. sponsors a BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT GROUP for parents who have lost a child. It is facilitated by Ann Carucci, founder of H.A.N.D.S. who lost her son & daughter–in-law in a boating accident. Their bodies were never recovered. All groups meet from 6:30 to 8:00pm. It will be held at International Headquarters, 9 Scott Drive, New City, NY 10956. Services are free of charge. Ann is also available for personal one-on-one counseling sessions. H.A.N.D.S also now has a WIDOWS AND WIDOWERS GROUP facilitated by Ann Carucci, who lost her husband. These meetings are held every Monday at 9 Scott Drive, New City. When that is happening, we can benefit from a conversation with an experienced professional counselor who shares our Catholic perspective. Our parish can make a connection for you through the archdiocese's PARISH COUNSELING NETWORK. Our parishioners can make an appointment to meet with a professional counselor in Rockland County or anyplace in the archdiocese for up to six meetings, with only a $10 co-pay per session.
