It is traditional to celebrate Saints' feast days on the anniversary of their deaths, but that of John Paul II (22 October) is celebrated on the anniversary of his papal inauguration. Posthumously, he has been referred to by some Catholics as "St. John Paul the Great", although the title has no official recognition.

Papal inauguration is a liturgical service of the Catholic Church within Mass for the ecclesiastical investiture of a pope.

Born Karol Józef Wojtyla on May 18, 1920, in Wadowice, Poland, Pope John Paul II's early life was marked by great loss. His mother died when he was nine years old, and his older

brother Edmund died when he was 12.

Wanting to become a priest, John Paul began studying at a secret seminary run by the Archbishop of Krakow in 1938. After World War II ended, he finished his religious studies at a Krakow seminary and was ordained in 1946.

He was made a cardinal by Pope Paul VI in 1967, and in 1978 became the first non-Italian pope in more than 400 years. A charismatic figure, John Paul used his influence to bring about political change and is credited with the fall of communism in his native Poland.

Pope John Paul II died on April 2, 2005, at the age of 84, at his Vatican City residence. More than 3 million people waited in line to say good-bye to their beloved religious leader at St. Peter's Basilica before his funeral on April 8.

On September 30, 2013, Pope Francis announced that the canonization of Pope John Paul II would occur on April 27, 2014. The announcement of Pope John Paul II's canonization came after the Vatican revealed that two miracles were attributed to the late pope.

OUR LADY OF THE CAPE

Our Lady of the Cape (Notre-Dame-du-Cap) is a title given to Mary the Mother of God in Cap-de-la-Madeleine, Quebec Canada. The title refers specifically to a statue of the Blessed Mother which is currently located in the Old Shrine.

In 1854 Our Lady inspired Zephirin Dorval, a generous parishioner of Cap-de-la-Madeleine , to donate to the shrine a statue of the Madonna as She appeared to Catherine Laboure in 1830. This event is known as the Miraculous Medal Apparition. It shows Mary without the Child Jesus, Her arms outstretched toward the people, standing on a half-globe, Her foot/heal crushing the head of the snake.

The other characteristic element of the statue of Our Lady of the Cape is Her crown. It was added in 1904.

The symbolic worth of this crown, made of gold, platinum, and diamonds from thousands of jewels offered by the Canadians, is infinitely superior to its material worth. The coats of arms of the ten Canadian provinces are displayed around the base, and proclaim Our Lady of the Cape as the patron saint and Protectress of all Canadians.

The history of Our Lady of the Cape Shrine is a tale of faith, miracles, and perseverance which culminated in a small chapel becoming a draw for hundreds of thousands of pilgrims from around the world.

1694 - The original small wooden structure was built.

1720 - The wooden building was replaced by a fieldstone church in 1720. This was the first church of Cap-de-la-Madeleine.

1747 - A second parish church was built to replace the first church. This building still stands and is considered the oldest church in Canada in which Mass is celebrated daily.

1867 - More and more parishioners started coming to church; eventually, the church was too small, and a larger church was required. The stones and building material were purchased and were to be brought over in the winter across the frozen Saint Lawrence River.

1879 –One of those rare mild winters where the river did not freeze over. Parishioners prayed the Rosary, asking for the Blessed Mother‘s intercession for solid ice to form on the river. Miraculously, in the middle of March, thin pieces of ice floated down the river from Lake St-Pierre, creating a narrow mile-and-a-half-long ice path. The stones were carried across the river on the “ice bridge”. Just after the last load had been safely brought across, the ice bridge collapsed

1880 – With these stones, the third church was built.

1888 - June 22, 1888 the small church is officially consecrated to Mary, and thus becomes the “Shrine”. The statue which was donated by Zephirin Dorval in 1854 was taken from the side altar and placed on the high altar, where it has remained ever since.

1955 - With more parishioners, the construction of the new basilica began.

1964 – The basilica is inaugurated.

Today, between 200,000 and 400,000 pilgrims visit Our Lady of the Cape Shrine annually. Many come to celebrate the Festival of the Assumption on August 15th.

Humour

The farmer’s son was returning from the market with the crate of chickens his father had entrusted to him, when all of a suddenly the box fell and broke open. Chickens scurried off in different directions, but the determined boy walked all over the neighbourhood scoping up the wayward birds and returning them to the repaired crate. Hoping he had found them all, the boy reluctantly returned home, expecting the worst. “Pa, the chickens got loose,” the boy confessed sadly. “But I managed to find all 12 of them.” “Well, you did real good, son,” the farmer beamed. “You left with seven.”

PRAYER OF THE DAY October 17-23, 2021

Sunday, October 17 - To Protect Life

Loving God, I thank you for the gift of life you gave and continue to give to me and to all of us. Merciful God, I ask your pardon and forgiveness for my own failure and the failure of all people to respect and foster all forms of life in our universe. Gracious God, I pray that with your grace, I and all people will reverence, protect, and promote all life and that we will be especially sensitive to the life of the unborn, the abused, neglected, disabled, and the elderly. I pray, too, that all who make decisions about life in any form will do so with wisdom, love, and courage. Living God, I praise and glorify you as Father, Source of all life, as Son, Savior of our lives, and as Spirit, Sanctifier of our lives. Amen.

Monday, October 18 - Prayer for Success in Work

Glorious St. Joseph, model of all those who are devoted to labor, obtain for me the grace to work conscientiously, putting the call of duty above my many sins; to work with thankfulness and joy, considering it an honor to employ and develop, by means of labor, the gifts received from God; to work with order, peace, prudence and patience, never surrendering to weariness or difficulties; to work, above all, with purity of intention, and with detachment from self, having always death before my eyes and the account which I must render of time lost, of talents wasted, of good omitted, of vain complacency in success so fatal to the work of God. All for Jesus, all for Mary, all after thy example, O Patriarch Joseph. Such shall be my motto in life and death. Amen.

Tuesday, October 19 - Prayer for God's Guidance

Father in Heaven, You made me Your child and called me to walk in the Light of Christ. Free me from darkness and keep me in the Light of Your Truth. The Light of Jesus has scattered the darkness of hatred and sin. Called to that Light, I ask for Your guidance. Form my life in Your Truth, my heart in Your Love. Through the Holy Eucharist, give me the power of Your Grace that I may walk in the Light of Jesus and serve Him faithfully.

Wednesday, October 20 - Apostle's Creed (A Prayer of Faith)

I believe in God the Father Almighty, Creator of Heaven and earth; I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried. He descended to the dead. On the third day He rose again.

He ascended into Heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Holy Catholic Church, the communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Thursday, October 21 - Prayer to Holy Michael the Archangel

Holy Michael, the Archangel, defend us in battle. Be our safeguard against the wickedness and snares of the devil. May God rebuke him, we humbly pray; and do you, O Prince of the heavenly host, by the power of God cast into hell Satan and all the evil spirits who wander through the world seeking the ruin of souls. Amen.

Friday, October 22 - Prayer to St. John Paul II

Oh, St. John Paul, from the window of heaven, grant us your blessing! Bless the church that you loved and served and guided, courageously leading it along the paths of the world in order to bring Jesus to everyone and everyone to Jesus. Bless the young, who were your great passion. Help them dream again, help them look up high again to find the light that illuminates the paths of life here on earth.

May you bless families, bless each family! You warned of Satans assault against this precious and indispensable divine spark that God lit on earth. St. John Paul, with your prayer, may you protect the family and every life that blossoms from the family. Pray for the whole world, which is still marked by tensions, wars and injustice. You tackled war by invoking dialogue and planting the seeds of love: pray for us so that we may be tireless sowers of peace.

Oh St. John Paul, from heavens window, where we see you next to Mary, send Gods blessing down upon us all. Amen.

Saturday, October 23 - Blood of Christ, Inebriate Me!

Blood of Christ, inebriate me! Inebriate me with Your Love, that I may be absorbed in Your interests and Your Will. Absorbed so as to be unmindful of my ills and petty cares. Unmindful of weariness and pain, heartache, and disappointment. Heedless of the lash of cruel words, and patient under wrongs. Amen.
