YOU ARE MY INHERITANCE, O LORD.

Mary Helen MacKillop was born in Fitzroy, Melbourne on 15 January 1842. Her father, Alexander, was educated in Rome for the priesthood but, at the age of 29, left just before his ordination. He decided to migrate to Australia and arrived in Sydney in 1838. Her mother, Flora MacDonald, left Scotland and arrived in Melbourne in 1840.

Mary, the eldest of their eight celebrated her First Communion on 15 August 1850 at the unusual early age of 9.

To provide for her needy family Mary took up a job as governess in 1860 at her Aunt and Uncle's place at Penola in South Australia. She was to look after their children and teach them. This brought her into contact with Father Julian Edmund Tenison Woods, who had been the parish priest in the South East.

Woods had been very concerned about the lack of education and particularly Catholic education in South Australia. When he started his school he was soon appointed Director of Education and became the founder, with Mary, of the Sisters of St Joseph who would teach in his schools.

Mother Mary MacKillop died on 8 August 1909 and was laid to rest at the Gore Hill Cemetery. After her burial people continuously took earth from around her grave and as a result her remains were exhumed and transferred, on 27 January 1914, to a vault before the altar of the Mother of God in the newly build Memorial Chapel in Mount Street Sydney.

Mary was Beatified in Sydney by Pope John Paul II on 19 January 1995.

The canonisation of Bl. Mary MacKillop will be celebrated this Sunday in Rome.

SPECIAL COLLECTION FOR WORLD MISSION SUNDAY

NEXT WEEKEND 23/24 OCTOBER 2010

The celebration of World Mission Sunday serves to remind us of our shared responsibility to proclaim the Gospel. The generosity of spirit and sharing of resources which is so much a part of the response each year by our parish is part of a world-wide action which places Jesus at the centre of our concern for others. It serves to build a better world which contributes to God’s reign being

more and more present among us. Please support the World Mission Sunday collection generously.

Mary MacKillop PrayerDear God,

Thank you for the blessed life of Mary MacKillop.May we face our struggles with same tenacity and courage as

Mary, never giving up in the face of adversity and never showing animosity towards those challenging us.

May we continue to persevere even when our difficulties seem insurmountable.

May we help those in need and exhibit compassion to them.May we remain loyal to our mission and support those

working with us.At all times we need to keep faith in God.

Amen.

Masses on Sunday, October 17- Canonisation of Blesses Mary Mackillop - By virtue of No. 374 of the General Instruction of the Roman Missal, the Archbishop has approved that, instead of the liturgy of the 29th Sunday Ordinary Time, the Mass of Blessed Mary Mackillop be celebrated with Readings: Genesis 12:1-4 with Psalm 15, Colossians 3:12-17 and the Alleluia and Gospel, Matthew 6:24-34.

First Reading: Genesis 12:1-4

A reading from the book of Genesis

The Lord said to Abram, 'Leave your country, your family and your father's house, for the land I will show you. I will make you a great nation; I will bless you and make your name so famous that it will be used as a blessing.'I will bless those who bless you:I will curse those who slight you.All the tribes of the earthshall bless themselves by you.'So Abram went as the Lord told him.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Responsorial Psalm: Ps 15:1-2. 4-5. 8. 11

R. You are my inheritance, o Lord.

Preserve me, God, I take refuge in you.I say to the Lord: 'You are my God.' O Lord, it is you who are my portion and cup;it is yourself who are my prize. R.

I will bless the Lord who gives me counsel, who even at night directs my heart.I keep the Lord ever in my sight:since he is at my right hand, I shall stand firm. R.

You will show me the path of life, the fullness of joy in your presence,at your right hand happiness for ever. R.

Second Reading: Colossians 3:12-17

A reading from the letter of St Paul to the Colossians

You are God's chosen race, his saints; he loves you, and you should be clothed in sincere compassion, in kindness and humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with one another; forgive each other as soon as a quarrel begins. The Lord has forgiven you; you must now do the same. Over all these clothes, to keep them together and complete them, put on love. And may the –peace of Christ reign in your hearts, because it is for this that you were called together as parts of one body.

Always be thankful. Let the message of Christ, in all its richness, find a home with you. Teach each other, and advise each other in all wisdom. With gratitude in your hearts sing psalms and hymns inspired songs to God; and never say or do anything except in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the father through him.

This is the word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Gospel Acclamation: 2 Corinthians 8:9

Alleluia, alleluia!Jesus Christ was rich but he became poor,to make your rich out of his poverty.Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 6:24-34

A reading from the holy Gospel according to Matthew

Jesus said to His disciples: 'No one can be a slave to two masters: he will either hate the first and love the second, or treat the first with respect and the second with scorn. You cannot be the slave both of God and money. That is why I am telling you not to worry about your life and what you are to eat, nor about your body and how you are to clothe it. Surely life means more than food, and the body more than clothing! Look at the birds in the sky. They do not sow or reap or gather into barns; yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they are? Can any of you, for all his worrying, add one single cubit to the span of life? And why worry about clothing? Think of the flowers growing in the fields: they never have to work or spin; yet I assure you that not even Solomon in all his regalia was robed like one of these. Now if that is how God clothes the grass in the field which is there today and thrown in the furnace tomorrow, will he not much more look after you, you men of little faith? So do not worry; do not say, “What are we to eat? What are we to drink? How are we to be clothed?” it is the pagans who set their hearts on all these things. Your heavenly father knows you need them all. Set your hearts on the kingdom first, and on his righteousness and all these other things will be given as well. So do not worry about tomorrow: tomorrow will take care of itself. Each day has enough trouble of its own.

This is the Gospel of the Lord.Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
