COMMODORE’S MESSAGE

The Summerset Regatta is over and by all accounts there were some Happy

Sailors. The new venue at the Pink Shell seemed to work for the club; we had

65 boats sign up for the event.

Kudos to Steve and Cindy plus all the Committee Members for all the hard

work and effort that went into the Regatta. Hopefully next year it will be

even bigger and better (we will work on some of the gliches that we encoun-

tered this year you know there is a learning curve whenever you make a

change).

We will have a booth at the Boat Show this year Nov. 12 - 15, so if you want

to help out contact Al Eastman and see if there is a time slot available; you do

get in free to the show if you work the booth.

The Commodores Cup will be December 5th., a BOTY race which includes a dinner at the Power Squad-

ron. You do not want to miss this one, dinner will be $12.00 per person and it will be catered, the menu TBA

you must RSVP see the form in this issue. Trophies will be awarded for the race. The Commodores dinner

will be our last event in the P.S. building before we move to the Cape Coral Yacht Club for the Christmas

Party on December 15th.

The Nominating Committee is in full swing and looking for members who want to help out next year. Please

realize that it is an honor to be asked to fill a position, a lot of thought goes into that decision by the Commit-

tee. Many of our members are not here in the summer months and that limits our choices to fill the posi-

tions. The members of the Committee are: Yours Truly, Jerry Pim, Elise Missall and Steve Romaine. Hey!

Why not surprise us and call for a position or to volunteer to serve; we want and need to see some new faces

helping out. Who knows you might even become Commodore! I have to say the group of Officers and Board

members plus all of the support staff in all areas of the club operation could not have been more helpful this

year and every one has done a wonderful job. CMCS is blessed with a lot of talented people.

Summerset was a success for the cruisers of CMCS. Approximatelly

twenty-seven cruisers came by land or by sea. Some stayed on the

mooring balls and some stayed at Moss Marine or the Pink Shell. We

heard no complaints so we assume everyone had a great time.

Upcoming Cruises

Danger Island Halloween Cruise – October 30-31, 2009 – Charles

& Judy Tomlins, Cruise Leaders – Yacht: Judy Judy.

Location: Danger Island (aka Picnic Island on nautical chart) ap-

proximately a mile west of Marker 101 on the Intercoastal Water-

way……..Some of us will drop anchor on Friday, October 29th, to se-

cure the island for the weekend. Those arriving on Friday, plan to at-

tend a beach “happy hour.”

Saturday Activities:

CMCS GOLF will start at 12:45 pm. Ladies vs Gentlemen….or as the saying goes…Admirals vs

Captains…….Music will be provided by the Famous CMCS Band……Happy Hour on the beach is

whatever time you set, since it’s always 5 O’Clock on Danger Island……About 6:00 pm, we’ll have a

barbeque pot luck dinner on the beach. Bring your grill, your entrée and a dish to share.

After dinner, it’s time for the Big Halloween Costume Contest by the Beach Bonfire. We will need

help getting fuel for the bonfire during the day and/or bring some wood, if possible. Prizes will be

awarded for the Best and Scariest Costumes. So put your thinking cap on, get your imagination go-

ing, wear your Best or Scariest Costume.

Sunday Activities:

After surviving Saturday night, please help with Clean Up on the Island. We should be done with

this task by 9:30 am……..At 10:00 am we’ll pull anchor and head over to St. James City, drop an-

chor and dinghy to Ragged Ass Saloon for lunch, then dinghy through the canals in St. James

City…….Head Home whenever.

Matanzas Pass Cruise/Festival of the Islands Regatta – November 7 & 8 – Curtis & Rebecca Tarvin – Cruise Leaders – Yacht: Island Time The plan is to sail off Ft Myers Beach Saturday and watch the start of the Festival of the Islands Regatta, which starts at 10:00, then head into Matanzas Pass and pick up a mooring around 12:00. Island Time will be monitoring channel 68.

You can access a map of the mooring field by using the following link: http://www.fortmyersbeachfl.gov/index.aspx?NID=109. Call Matanzas Inn @ 463-9258 just before going under the Sky Bridge and they will assign

you a mooring, they do not monitor the radio, and they do not reserve in advance. Once moored, dinghy to the dinghy dock under the south side of the bridge, and proceed to the lobby at Matanzas Inn, to pay your mooring fee. The moor-ing cost is approximately $13.00. Amenities provided include the use of showers, and laundry facilities. An alternative, for those of you who prefer to be at a marina rather than a mooring, there is the Moss Marine, which offers wet slips for boats up to 70 feet long. They are located on your starboard just before you would go under the Sky Bridge. After checking in, we will dinghy over to Bunch Beach for a beach picnic and fun. At this time the music cd’s will be handed out to those who want to participate in the “Name that Tune” contest.

Then at approximately 15:00 hours we will weigh dinghy anchor and head back to the mooring field to get refreshed for cocktails on Island Time at 17:00. Afterwards everyone is on their own for dinner. We need a head count of cruisers that will be attending so please call Curtis or Rebecca at 549-1875, or E-mail [email protected]. Sunday we will dinghy to the dinghy dock, and walk to the Time Out Café for breakfast and the winner of the “Name That Tune” contest will receive their award. Afterwards everyone is free to explore on there own. Matanzas Pass offers an array of dinghy channels that can be explored, or Ft Myers Beach offers a large variety of shops and entertainment.

November 26 & 27 “Thanksgiving a la CMCS Cruise” - November 26 & 27 –

Bill & Mary Misenheimer – Cruise Leaders – Yacht: Kalaha

This year we’re going back to an old CMCS Thanksgiving tradition and we hope you’ll join us for this

special cruise. We’ll be rafting up at Hurricane Hole on Thursday, November 26 th. Some boats will

arrive on Wednesday to secure the location. Around 2:00 pm the “Turkey Boat” will deliver a Publix

Turkey Dinner to the rafters (who are next to each other) which may include 3 or 4 boats depending

on the number of people on board. The dinners serve 7-10 people and we are planning on 8 people

per dinner. The group will be given their dinners to heat up and share and you’ll have all the tradi-

tional Thanksgiving delights plus a pumpkin pie. Cost will be $10.00 per person. The next day we’ll

dinghy to a location (TBD) and have a lunch with the leftovers. From there, you can stay at Hurri-

cane Hole, or move on. We need to give Publix one-week lead time to supply the dinners so we’ll

need your completed coupon and check no later than Tuesday, November 17 th. (Coupon located

elsewhere in this issue.) Sorry, but there will be no refunds after we order the dinners on Wednes-

day morning, November 18th. If you need instructions to get to Hurricane Hole, please check the box

in the coupon and we’ll get some information to you.

You will be the judges, so make sure to pick up a vote kit at the wel-

Dust off your sifter, replace that old baking powder and whip up a

creation to amaze your fellow sailors.

LADIES BRIDGE CLUB

A tisket, A tasket, A CMCS wine gift basket! At October’s meeting I debuted the CMCS wine gift baskets. One was an Italian dinner basket with the red

wine with all the fixings for a romantic Italian dinner. The other basket show-cased the white wine with a variety of cheeses and nuts. I received some pre-orders but you

still can order one. There are ten bottles of white wine remaining and I can assemble a variety of baskets according to your needs. Some themes could include Nautical, Thanksgiving, Christ-

mas, or Chocolate. The cost is $10 for the wine and the cost of assembling the basket for a to-tal of $20 to $25 (including the wine). Please let me know if you would like to purchase a bas-

ket by contacting me at [email protected]. I will deliver them at the November general meeting. If you need one sooner, just let me know and I will do my best to accommodate you.

November’s Ladies Bridge Club program will be a talk presented by our own Danny Hazen.

She will be sharing her experiences at the Susan G. Komen 3 Day Walk for the Cure. Danny, a breast cancer survivor, completed this amazing accomplishment with her daughter Amy in Den-

ver, Co. Come hear about the Amaziz Hazens’ big adventure! November’s meeting will be at our home. The date for this event is Wednesday, November 11th at 7:00 p.m. Please r.s.v.p.

to [email protected] or give me a call. I will forward directions to our home as the date nears. Please bring an appetizer to share and your favorite beverage. You are encouraged to

call a friend or fellow CMCS member and invite them to join us. See you soon.

CRUISING CONTINUED CMCS Holiday Cruise – December 26th through January 1st – Gordon Coffman – Cruise Leader –

Yacht: Ariel Mark your calendar for our annual Holiday Cruise. We meet at Hurricane Hole the first few days, then sail on to Burnt Store marina for a day or two where we celebrate New Years Eve. Gordon has reserved the party room and slips for those coming by boat or you can drive on up and join the crowd. More detailed information will be in the December Chowder Chatter.

SUMMERSET 2009

CHAIRMAN STEVE ROMAINE

267-2538 – EMAIL: [email protected]

Thank you all for participating in the 44th Annual Summerset Regatta.

This year, for the first time, all the shore-side activities were held at Fort

Myers Beach. The 46 boats racing in the gulf experienced light-air conditions

for the buoy races, sponsored by the Offshore Sailing School, on Saturday,

October 3rd. Sunday’s racing featured a 17-NM Coastal Distance Race spon-

sored by West Marine, in 4 – 10 knots of breeze.

Positive comments continue to come in from participants of the record (in recent years, anyway) 65

boats entered. “Great Skippers’ Meeting at Bonita Bill’s – delicious pizza;” “Super sunset at the Pink Shell

poolside cocktail party, with every boat being a winner with the wonderful door prizes”; “Jeff Butzer – the

perfect PRO, and with Bobby Lee (the local knowledge man) and Mark Beauvois (of Mark Boat fame) –

WOW! What a team!!” Mary Anderson of Journey On, one of the eight Charlotte Harbor visiting racing

yachts says, “We had a great time and thank you Steve and all the organizers and workers for all the hard

work. We can’t wait to do it again next year!” Jerry Watkins of Blown Away, from Naples writes,

“Congratulations on the best ever regatta, Summerset #44!!”

Several records were set in this year’s Summerset, with the number of boats entered as cruisers (19), in

-kind and door prize contributors, number of t-shirts and microfiber shirts sold and distributed (270), boat

sleeve sponsors (33), and new corporate sponsorships obtained -- all to contribute to youth sailing programs.

At this time it appears we will have about $8,000 to distribute from St. Pete to Miami. Locally we are study-

ing the possibility of establishing a Youth Sailing Scholarship Fund, whereby our CMCS members could

make a request for funds to send a child or grandchild of a member, or a needy child, to a youth sailing pro-

gram. More on this in the future.

The single most important ingredient in keeping sponsors for future years is to patronize their busi-

nesses. Their support of Summerset and Youth Sailing has been amazing. Now it is time for us to say “Thank

you”, and give them our support. Listed below are our Corporate Sponsors:

Received applications from Chip & Mary Swann who have joined our “Mainship” Ranks.

Their boat, “Cruzin Waves” is their newest addition of their long boating history. The Swanns

are looking forward to cruising and as well crewing. They have been around boats their entire

lives, both sail and power.

Chuck Wasserloos & Shannon White have joined our fleet with their Island Packet 38’,

“Packet Up”. Transplants from New Hampshire and Maine they now make SW Florida their

home. There’s a story here about “extensive Repairs from Hurricane Katrina”? They’ve been

cruising the southern region of USA & Bahamas for many years.

plication and check! Welcome A.J.! His boat “Fan T Sea” is a Tarrab 62’ ~ OK you just won
