Glorious and majestic are his deeds, and his righteousness endures forever.” - Psalms 111:2-3 Dear members and friends, I greet you in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I hope you are doing well today. Can you believe it that we are two months into our journey together? I give thanks to God for God’s faithfulness and the opportunity to journey with you. It has a been a great blessing to get to know you a little more. We still have long ways to go. But with God’s help, we will delight in God’s amazing work in our lives together. In these incoming months, we will be commemorating Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month (September 15th – October 15th). Hispanic/Latinx Heritage Month “is a time when all United Methodists in the United States can celebrate diversity and the positive contributions of their Hispanic/Latino brothers and sisters to their communities and congregations. During the Sept. 15-Oct. 15 observance, many Hispanic/Latino people are remembering their traditions and celebrating their families’ countries of origin and their independences. It offers an opportunity for all church members to better understand their community and the families in it as the population becomes increasingly diverse.” We will have the opportunity to listen, learn and experience a little more of the Hispanic/Latinx Heritage in our way at our worship services on Sundays. Don’t miss it! In September, we kick off with our fall program of discipleship. Our bible studies come back in full throttle. We will be having Bible Study in English at 1pm led by Pastor Judith Kelsey-Powell. Our Bible Studies in Spanish will be on Wednesdays 10am and Thursdays at 7pm led by me. This year we will be having Confirmation for our youth ages 12-17 for the first time in a few years. So, if you know of any youth who is interested let me know. We will be meeting on third Sunday of the month from 3pm-6pm at our main building. We will be using the “Confirm” curriculum, an approved United Methodist curriculum. Please make the effort to attend regularly to any of our bible studies. Multiculturalism is a blessing of God and it will be the overarching theme for these next two months in worship. We will be learning different dimensions of what it means to be multicultural. The prophet Jeremiah will provide some biblical and theological grounding, language and reflection for our worship. We need to start owning and living into this wonderful calling God has entrusted us in our church because great are the works that our Lord gives us. Thus, I invite to take opportunity to step out of your comfortable zone and come with enthusiasm and open minds. God is about to do amazing things in our midst. You all are in my prayers.

Nuestros estudios bíblicos regresan a toda máquina.

Sinceramente,

Revdo. Uziel Hernández Martínez

ROCKFORD URBAN MINISTRIESJustGoods, the fair trade store at 201 7th St. is closing. The following is an update and explanation from Stanley Campbell, director of Rockford Urban Ministries.

There are too many people to thank individually for supporting JustGoods Fair Trade Store, from the customers who purchased their Christmas presents regularly, to the donors who forgave loans and helped buy inventory, to the many volunteers and staff who put in long hours and who made memories and supported individual craftspeople around the world. There are many inquiries about the space here at 201 Seventh Street, and we hope to find a compatible nonprofit fair trade outlet. We know that it will need your support as well, so please watch the space.

The music will continue, beginning on September 20. We could always use volunteers to prepare the room and welcome the guests and musicians and to provide treats. Music will begin with Emily Hurd on Sep. 20. (list is at their website: www.rockfordlisteningroom.com) . Our treasurer, Lee Schreiner, is fighting fourth-stage lymphoma and has received his third round of chemotherapy. He and Charmaine have decided to sell the building and I believe I can tell you that it will be purchased by Rockford New Hope, a nonprofit community development association that grew out of Centennial UMC with help from RUM.

Midtown District, the Seventh Street business organization, has moved out of our building and down the street to occupy the old railroad depot at Sixth Avenue. Sustain Rockford, a new environmental group, will move in. They will focus on educating poor neighborhoods about alternative energy and will be a great fit. We’ll let you know when there is an open house and you can meet everyone.

After fourteen years, the volunteers and staff have decided to close JustGoods, the non-profit fair trade store at the corner of Seventh Street and First Avenue. Volunteers are helping close out the sales. The store came about because a number of people wanted access to gift items not made in sweat shops. Fair trade promises living wages to third world artisans. The concept was started by missionaries who contracted with local villagers to pay a fair living wage, not use children, share the profits with the village, and not harm the environment. The largest fair trade companies -- Ten Thousand Villages and SERRV -- started by the Mennonites and the Brethren, have grown to two percent of the U.S. economy. In Europe, fair trade sales can be as high as 15% of national business. So our little store had high hopes of educating Rockford and supporting fair trade producers, as well as buying from local crafts people and nonprofits.

Sadness prevails because it's such a lovely store in which so many volunteers and lightly paid staff have spent time and effort. They organized benefits to help pay for heat and electricity, assisted in raising funds to put a wind turbine and solar panels on the roof, and donated items to other non-profits while selling crafts in support of Rockford missions and ministries.

The reason for closing boils down to finances: there just hasn’t been enough income to purchase inventory for this year’s Christmas sales, which is when the store breaks even. Rockford Urban Ministries (whom I work for) is ultimately responsible for paying the bills. The people hosted benefits, sent out appeals and sought volunteers to run the store. Volunteers educated themselves to tell people about the virtues of fair trade. I hope the community can show appreciation for their effort. I thank all for your support and am sorry that JustGoods is closing. But the building and, we hope, the mission continues. And RUM’s vintage art and book sales in the back room will continue, though limited to when we have volunteers to take your donations. We pray there will be something new and even better moving into this space. We welcome ideas which you can send to [email protected], or mail to RUM, 201 Seventh St., Rockford IL 61104 (and you are welcome to bless us with a tax deductible check).

Interfaith Open Houses of Worship Sep 22 The Open Houses of Worship will be Sunday, Sep. 22, 2019, from 1:30 to 4:30pm. Two different faith communities invite you to hear about their faith and enjoy a tour of their worship center. WHERE: Begin at 1:30 pm – Temple Beth El, 1203 Comanche Drive, Rckd, one block east of N Alpine. then drive to:3:00 pm at the Muslim Community Center, 5921 Darlene Dr., south and west of Harrison and South Mulford Individuals or groups are welcome. People are encouraged to carpool or travel in their own vehicles. The Rockford Interfaith Council has representatives from every major faith and many denominations who pray and work for a tolerant community. Mission and Outreach

Rally Sunday was celebrated on August 25 with a joint service and a picnic outside. The church was filled with our members praising God in both languages with songs and readings. Many hands helped to set up and take down tables and chairs in the side lawn. We feasted on grilled hot dogs, chips, ice cream and lemonade. God gave us a beautiful day. A good time was had by all.

Saturday Kids' Club youth enjoyed making crosses this month. We also had two of our long time members graduate to our middle school group. We celebrated with a pizza party. The girls were given cross necklaces. It is always rewarding to watch the children as they grow in our program. Thanks for your support of Saturday Kids' Club.

Centennial's Meals on Wheels outreach continues through October on the 4th Saturday of each month. We still need drivers to deliver the food in September and October. If you would like to volunteer, contact Carol Risenhoover. Reimbursements are available for food and gas.

Again this year, we were fortunate in that Christ UMC included Centennial's children in their backpack drive. On Monday, Aug, 26th, 35 backpacks, complete with school supplies, were delivered to Centennial.. All the children in our programs, grades K-8 received this generous gift from Christ UMC. We are very thankful for their support of our children and families.
