Our Director of Religious ED, Rhonda Aucoin and our school Counselor, Stacey Davis, prepared a moving prayer service and some great literature and tips for our faculty. We will be posting some material on our website (www.icschargers.org) next week in case it might be of interest to our parents, as well. We know and appreciate that not only have you experienced the above mentioned stressors, but you also have the stress of being a parent and are charged with helping your child manage his/her stress. Please know that we consider our relationship with you, a partnership of mutual trust and support. If you are ever in need of any assistance, guidance or cooperation, please reach out to us. This month we are also taking time as individuals and with our students to remember how important it is to be grateful. It’s even more important than ever that during these stressful times, when our outlook may be bleak, that we take time each day to find at least one thing to be grateful or thankful for. Research shows that gratitude is the single most important factor leading to a happy life- a joy filled life. Having joy or being innately happy does not mean one does not have problems, stress, disappointment or fear. It is not the absence of troubles, but fortitude in the face of adversity-an inner strength, moxie, resolve that is born from gratitude! And gratitude is defined as affirming that there are good things in the world-gifts and benefits that we’ve received and recognized that these sources of goodness come from outside ourselves. Not only does gratitude lead to inner happiness, emerging research points to gratitude as a potential bridge between a student’s academic and social well-being. Studies show that grateful youth have higher GPA’s; experience more positive emotions, and ultimately, go on to live more meaningful lives. In addition, gratitude among middle school students can foster an increased sense of hope and trust in others and fuel a desire to give back to their community. From the Principal Dear Parents, It is hard to believe that it is almost Thanksgiving! Where has the time gone? We’ve had so much to deal with in just three short months….Pandemic restrictions and guidelines; quarantines and virtual schooling; seven storms in which we were in the cone of uncertainty; an emotional presidential election, as well as normal life stressors. Recently during a faculty in-service day, we addressed the importance of finding one’s joy and self-care as ways of managing stress. It’s even more important than ever that during these stressful times, when our outlook may be bleak, that we take time each day to find at least one thing to be

grateful or thankful for. Recent findings by the American Psychological Association suggests that practicing gratitude at a young age promotes later development of self-control and self-regulation, which are essential for lifelong success. Gratitude can manifest in kids as young as 6 or 7 by linking positive events to the people who help foster them. Usually, though, gratitude doesn’t fully materialize until ages 10-14, when students become less egocentric and develop the ability to

  • empathize. To incorporate gratitude early, encourage children to say why they are grateful or thankful. Generally, by 1st or 2nd grade, children can get that; however, parents and teachers have to model that again and again for children in terms of why they’re grateful for something or someone. Gratitude can be taught, learned and transform a person’s life by seeing it modeled, practicing it regularly, and by using gratitude journals. If you’d like to practice gratitude with your family, have each of you keep a gratitude journal and/or share with one another each day, what and who has made you grateful. In closing, I want to say that I am grateful to be part of the ICS family. I am grateful to work with such dedicated teachers. I am grateful to partner with such generous parents, and I’m grateful for the loving students who brighten each day. May you and your families have a joy filled November and a very Happy Thanksgiving! Blessings, Kim DiMarco Rescheduling of Hallow’s Eve Last Friday’s Halloween costume day and class treats are rescheduled for this Friday, November 6th. •   October 15, 2020  Dear Friend of ICS,     As we embark on this unprecedented school year, Immaculate Conception School invites you to be a part of our new ICS Fest Concert Series. The series will include three outdoor concerts on our campus. Along with live music, the event will feature food and beverage booths, raffles and more.  The coronavirus pandemic has certainly caused a great deal of change and uncertainty in all of our lives. This initiative will not only enable us to bring in necessary fundraising dollars, but more importantly build a sense of community that is so important to our ICS family.  We are certain here at ICS that we can rise above the difficulties and with your help fulfill our mission of providing a student-centered, Catholic learning environment with a family atmosphere that embodies the Salesian philosophy of reason, religion, and loving kindness.  Please see the accompanying documents for details on concert dates and sponsorship opportunities. Your sponsorship will be valid for all three concerts. If you have any questions, please feel free to call Scott Walker at 341-6217 ext. 2644 or send an email to [email protected].    Sincerely,

Kim DiMarco, Principal   Immaculate Conception School
