“Stand-Around” is a 30 minute fellowship gathering from 10:00am to 10:30am in Cousins Hall. Refreshments are served every Sunday. It is a wonderful opportunity to meet and greet new friends as well as long time friends. If you worship at 10:30am, come early and enjoy the fel-lowship and refreshments.

Prayer Blankets: Remember prayer blankets are always a blessing for people needing comfort. They are in a cabinet along with spiritual music CDs in Room 103 in the Broyles Center.

Women’s Guild Bible Study–Resumes Wednesday January 22 with Barbara Dennison and her bible teachings, lessons on “The Armor of God” by Priscilla Shirer. The study meets from 9:30–11:30 in McCormick Hall. Come just a bit early for coffee and fellowship.

Fellowship Sunday School class-What did Jesus' brother, James say about living a genuine life of Faith? Find the answer and start the New Year with us as we study the practical issues of faith in Life Lessons from James by Max Lucado. The Fellowship Sunday School class will begin this study on January 19th and everyone is welcome. We meet on Sunday morning at 9 AM in McCormick Hall. Books cost $7. Big Canoe Chapel’s Boy Scout Troop 20 is raising money to support

their many projects and activities for 2020. They will be selling their

popular frozen lasagnas at Stand Around on January 12th and 19th. These

are no ordinary lasagnas! Scout Mom Sue Gibbons (Culinary Arts Teacher

at Pickens High School) will supervise the cooking and assembly of 2 sizes

feeding 2-4 for $25 and 4-6 for $35. Orders will be available for pick up at

the Chapel on February 1st from 10:00-12:00, on February 2nd before/after

services, or by other arrangement. Payment is due at the time of order.

Some missionary friends of mine recently informed me of the most engaged Bible verse of 2019. This information came from the app YouVersion. The mission of YouVersion is to help people grow in their relationship with God by engaging with the Bible. The users of this app grew by 30% in 2019. There are now 400 million users around the world.

So, what was the most engaged Bible verse of 2019? It was Philippians 4:6 and I’m not at all surprised.

“Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with

thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

In the Sermon on the Mount, Jesus reminds those gath-ered to live a life that is free from worry. Instead of anxiety and worry, Jesus reminds his audience to seek first God’s kingdom and His righteousness.

We live in a day with no shortage of worries. Circum-stances arise that throw us into fear and dread. Sometimes we can only imagine the worst. And then when the worst doesn’t happen we wonder why we were so worried in the first place!

How about Philippians 4:6 for 2020? Instead of worry how about prayer, petition, and thanksgiving? We’re invited to present our requests to God. I suspect such a heart sur-rendered will transform 2020.
