The Book of James: Pearls for Wise Living

James is one of the most practical books of the Bible. Its teachings speak loudly to those who feel torn be-tween the competing demands of this world and their faith. This study offers “pearls for wise living” by apply-ing the wisdom of James to our current day. For anyone who has struggled to live a truly Christian life, James offers a wealth of practical solutions for handling and even sanctifying everyday circumstances.

Join us for James: Pearls for Wise Living at The Cathedral of Our Lady of Walsingham beginning Thursdays, on January 10, 2019 at 1:00 pm in Seton Hall. Or choose a second class offered in the evenings beginning Thursday, January 17 at 7:00 pm in St. Jude Hall. For more information or register for this 11-part study se-ries contact Mona Diaz at 713-659-2829 / [email protected] for the Thursday 1 pm class or John McGar-ry at 713.679.8110 / email [email protected] for the Thursday 7:00 pm class. For mail-in registra-tion forms, please visit olwcatholic.org/bible-studies.

Honor Their Lives of Service The priests of the Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of Saint Peter left behind all that they had so that they might lead more and new disciples into the fullness of faith. Through your gift to this weekend’s second collection for the Ordinariate’s Retirement Fund for Priests, you can help our clergy prepare to live their retirement years in dignity, free of anxiety about their means of support. Checks should be made to “Personal Ordinariate of the Chair of St. Peter” and sealed in the special donation envelopes provided by the Ordinariate. Gifts will be collected during Mass or you may send your gift directly to the Chancery

using the provided, pre-addressed envelope. Be sure to include a completed donor card in your enve-lope. While the need is great, no gift is too small. Thank you for your prayerful consideration!

Advent Sung Mattins Come join the Cathedral Choir during Advent for Sung Mattins 10:50 am prior to Solemn Mass at 11:15 am.

Mary Immaculate, Our Advent Beacon

Devotion to the Immaculate Conception of Our Lady is one of England's greatest gifts to the Uni-

versal Church. Though the feast was first observed in the East by the sixth century, the pious com-

memoration of Mary's spotless conception took root in the West in Anglo-Saxon England and

spread from thence throughout Europe.

As early as 1067, in the country known as "Mary's Dowry," December 8 was set aside to celebrate

the Immaculate Conception, and St. Anselm of Canterbury commanded the day to be celebrated

with festive solemnity in all of England. Norman bishops tried to ban the feast on the grounds that

it was not observed in Rome, but the English hung on to their devotion. Throughout the Middle

Ages, the doctrine that the Blessed Virgin had been spared the taint of the original sin was hotly disputed, even

as several great Oxford theologians, including Robert Grossteste, William of Ware, and Duns Scotus defended

and elaborated the teaching with precision and subtlety. Only in the sixteenth century did Pope St. Pius V add

the Feast of the Immaculate Conception to the General Roman Calendar, and it was not until 1854 that Pope Pius

IX confirmed this article of faith as an infallible dogma of the Church. Seven years earlier, the same Pope de-

clared Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception the special patroness of the United States of America, and ever

since in this country her solemnity has been gratefully observed as a Holy Day of Obligation.

The liturgical celebration of the Immaculate Conception finds it date on December 8 for the simple reason that

this day falls exactly nine months before the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin on September 8 (just as Christmas

comes nine months after the Annunciation). Coincidently, then, but ever so appropriately the Immaculate Con-

ception arrives early in the season of Advent and reminds us that Our Lady is indeed "the Source and Cause of

our Anticipation."

As we prepare for Christmas, it is meet and right that we approach the mystery of the Incarnation through the

self-surrender of Mary's fiat, that we seek to imitate her example, and that we beg her prayers in heaven. Thus,

may we draw nearer to the heart of God which took flesh from Mary's unblemished body even as we commune

with Christ's own Sacred Body in the Holy Eucharist. As Pope Benedict XVI put it, "On the path of Advent shines

the star of Mary Immaculate, a sign of certain hope and comfort." ~ Dr. Clint Brand

Adventus Domini

During the season of Advent, we begin anew the cycle of liturgical time with sober recollection and eager

longing as we ready ourselves for the coming of the Lord. Looking back and straining ahead, mingling pen-

itence and joy, we await the Messiah, both the Divine Infant to be born in a manger and the awesome Pan-

tocrator who will come with fierce mercy and tender justice. This paradoxical convergence of contraries is

characteristic of the season and finds rich expression in the Collect for the First Sunday of Advent accord-

ing to the Ordinariate Missal. Composed for the 1549 Book of Common Prayer and appointed in 1662 to be

prayed daily until Christmas, this collect knits together for the present moment the beginning and the end-

ing of our life in Christ, the first and final coming of the Word made flesh:

ALMIGHTY God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty to judge both the quick and the dead, we may rise to the life immortal; through the same Jesus Christ our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

In the darkest time of the year, we welcome the Light of the world that armed in grace "we may rise to the

life immortal." Like the ancient liturgical formularies for Advent, the language here is strong and the im-

agery is martial. The texts of Holy Mass in the season, dating back to the early Church, do not allow us to

linger over the historical memory of the Christmas crib in Bethlehem but insistently emphasize the escha-

tological register of ultimate reckoning and eternal judgment.

Rebuking cheap sentimentality and facile nostalgia, the Advent Liturgy bids us to put on the armor of Christ

here and now that we might know the arrival of our Savior in its threefold dimension. The Sacred Liturgy

of the season recalls Our Lord's historical coming, but takes His birth as a symbol of His coming in grace to

our souls, anticipating His final coming and preparing us for that eventuality--and linking the three togeth-

er "now in the time of this mortal life" there is every Sunday, every day, at every Altar in the world His sac-

ramental advent in the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Dr. Clint Brand

Moveable Feasts 2018-2019

What are Moveable Feasts?

Moveable Feasts are periodic dinners for 8-10 parishioners who meet in the home of one of the families

for a social dinner. No agenda. The Host family for each dinner provides the main course, and the other

members provide side dishes, bread, dessert, and wine if desired. The hosting family rotates among the

group. Both singles and couples are invited.

The goal is to have a sit-down dinner to share a meal and get to know each other. The meals are intend-

ed to be simple, soup and grilled cheese is just as good as steak and lobster. The goal of the group is to

get to know better your fellow parishioners and foster the sense of family within our Parish community.

The dinners for the newly Moveable Feast groups can begin when agreed for your group, but no later

than January to keep things moving. You can then meet from monthly to quarterly depending on the

preferences of the group. Feasting will continue throughout the year. New members can join, and new

groups will form with the new Church year in Advent.

As much as possible, groups will be composed of parishioners from proximal Zip codes to minimize

travel. Each group will have a Moderator who organizes the first dinner and acts as a coordinator for the

group. Please consider volunteering as a group Moderator.

How do I join?

Easy! Just complete the form found in the narthex and return to the Church Office. You can also enroll

by sending an email directly to George Greene at the email address below or completing the form on the

OLW web page: https://olwcatholic.org/moveable-feast. Please indicate if you would be willing to act as

a Moderator for a group. Volunteers will be in the narthex December 15 and 16 to sign you up!

If you have any questions, see me after Mass or contact me by phone or email below:

George Greene 713-725-9106 [email protected]

Come Join the Busy Hands on Friday Afternoons

As you read through this bulletin and then refer to the Mass leaflet every week-end, please send up a prayer in thanksgiving for those who took the final step in the process of getting these documents into your hands. These angels are the folks on the Folding Team, headed up by Mary Lou Jardine, who faithfully meet every Friday afternoon at 2:00 in St. Jude Hall to fold and stuff all of them.

If you have an hour or two on a Friday afternoon, please consider giving it in this service to the parish of Our Lady of Walsingham. Your dedication for those two hours is so very necessary to get this task completed each week. With Christmas approaching, our immediate need for help is December 21 from 1-3 pm in St. Jude Hall. Contact Mary Lou Jardine at the parish office at 713-683-9407 and let her know if you can come by to help! Many thanks from the Liturgical Office!

That it may please thee to preserve, and provide for, all women in childbirth, all infirm persons, and young children; and to defend all widows and orphans, We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord. That it may please thee to preserve all who are in peril by reason of their labor or their travel, We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord. That it may please thee to succor, help, and comfort, all who are in danger, necessity, and tribulation, We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord. That it may please thee to have mercy upon all men, We beseech thee to hear us, good Lord.

From all blindness of heart; from pride, vainglory, and hypocrisy; from envy, hatred, and malice; and from all uncharitableness, Good Lord, deliver us. From all inordinate and sinful affections; and from all the deceits of the world, the flesh, and the devil, Good Lord, deliver us. From all false doctrine, heresy, and schism; from hardness of heart, and contempt of thy Word and commandment, Good Lord, deliver us. From lightning and tempest; from earthquake, fire, and flood; from plague, pestilence, and famine, Good Lord, deliver us. From all sedition, privy conspiracy, and rebellion; from violence, battle, and murder; and from dying suddenly and unprepared, Good Lord, deliver us. By the mystery of thy holy Incarnation; by thy holy Nativity and Circumcision; by thy Baptism, Fasting, and Temptation, Good Lord, deliver us. By thine Agony and Bloody Sweat; by thy Cross and Passion; by thy precious Death and Burial; by thy glorious Resurrection and As-cension; and by the Coming of the Holy Spirit, Good Lord, deliver us. In all time of our tribulation; in all time of our prosperity; in the hour of death, and in the day of judgement, Good Lord, deliver us.

The Collect V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

Let us pray. Almighty God, give us grace that we may cast away the works of darkness, and put upon us the armour of light, now in the time of this mortal life, in which thy Son Jesus Christ came to visit us in great humility; that in the last day, when he shall come again in his glorious majesty, to judge both the quick and the dead; we may rise to the life immortal; through the same Jesus Christ thy Son our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, ever one God, world without end. Amen.

Introit Ad te levavi Psalm 25:1-3 Unto thee, O Lord, lift I up my soul;

O my God, in thee have I trusted, let me not be confounded: neither let mine enemies triumph over me; for all they that look for thee shall not be ashamed.

(Ps.) Show me thy ways, O Lord: and teach me thy paths. (Bow) Glory be to the Father… (Rise) As it was in the beginning… Unto thee, O Lord …

Prayer at the Advent Wreath

The Epistle: I Thessalonians 3:12-4:2 Brethren, may the Lord make you increase and abound in love to one another and to all men, as we do to you, so that he may establish your hearts unblamable in holiness before our God and Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus with all his saints. Finally, brethren, we beg and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, that as you learned from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

The Holy Gospel: St. Luke 21:25-28, 34-36 V. The Lord be with you. R. And with thy spirit.

V. + A reading from the Holy Gospel according to Saint Luke. R. Glory be to thee, O Lord.

At that time, Jesus said to his disciples, “There will be signs in sun and moon and stars, and upon the earth distress of nations in perplexity at the roaring of the sea and the waves, men fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world; for the powers of the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of man coming in a cloud with power and great glory. Now when these things begin to take place, look up and raise your heads, because your redemption is drawing near. “But take heed to yourselves lest your hearts be weighed down with dissipation and drunkenness and cares of this life, and that day come upon you suddenly like a snare; for it will come upon all who dwell upon the face of the whole earth. But watch at all times, praying to have strength to escape all these things that will take place, and to stand before the Son of man.” V. The Gospel of the Lord. R. Praise be to thee, O Christ.

The Lesson: Jeremiah 33:14-16 “Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD, when I will fulfil the promise I made to the house of Israel and the house of Judah. In those days Judah will be saved and Jerusalem will dwell securely. And this is the name by which it will be called: ‘The LORD is our righteousness.’” V. The Word of the Lord. R. Thanks be to God.

For Christ is coming, is coming soon!

E'en so, Lord Jesus, quickly come, And night shall be no more;

My Jesus, I believe that thou art truly present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love thee above all things, and I desire to receive thee into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive thee sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

I embrace thee as if thou wert already there and unite myself wholly to thee. Never permit me to be separated from thee. Amen.
