This is not new – Just “doable” now.
• Autonomous car concepts on display since 1940’s.
• Research commenced in the 60’s.
• 80’s and 90’s research accelerating.
• Mid 00’s -DARPA - Defence Advanced
Research Projects Agency (DARPA)
challenges.
• All leading to today’s vehicles on road.
The Pathway to Autonomous Vehicles • Full self parking – Steering, throttle and brake with driver in car
• Valet parking – driver out of the car
• City self drive at low speed
• Co-Drive systems.
• V2X systems- driver warnings.
• In vehicle Apps.
• Highway speed self driving – platooning.
• Second collision avoidance.
• P to P self drive with some driver interaction.
• Fully autonomous point to point self drive.
The Automation levels. • The SAE-A and other have proposed automaton levels
from 0 to 5 (or 0 to 4)
• We are currently in Level 2 and rapidly heading towards level 3.
• Starting to see Level 4 emerge - Google Koala Car, Milton Keyens Pods.
Who is working on Self Driving Cars? • Nearly all manufacturers are playing in this space.
• Supported by all the major Tier 1 suppliers.
• Universities, NASA, Asia, Google, Zoox, Tesla – Basically everywhere.
A matter of when, not if. At a recent conference, Ralf Herrtwich, of Daimler ran through the following
The day Bosch tried to kill me. • In late 2013 I met with the global head of the Bosch Autonomous Vehicle
program.
• I was then offered a demonstration on the autobahn in an autonomous
vehicle.
• This was a production car – retro fitted with the latest, and still in
development, autonomous vehicle technology.
What can we expect. • Collision Avoidance – The norm in most cars.
• Connected vehicles – V2X communication and driver warnings.
• Digital Licenses.
• Level 4 Pods – CBD and other high traffic, low speed areas.
Thank You.
