Dragons Abreast is a sporting body that raises awareness of breast cancer and the importance of early detection. They offer hope and support to women and men dealing with breast cancer, and the realisation that life can go on after treatment, with fun and challenge, camaraderie and exercise. Dragon Boating meets in Orange at Lake Canobolas on Tuesday and Thursday evenings at 5:30pm, and Saturday mornings at 7:30am. Each session lasts about 2 hours and you choose how often you attend. You can be part of this very sociable, friendly crew who often have barbecues for tea or brekky. The first three visits are free and membership is $130 for adults, and $50 for juniors. Colour City Dragons and community members joined with Dragons Abreast at the annual Regatta at Cockle Bay, Darling Harbour two weeks ago, and did well with a third and second placing, before being stopped in the third race by a torrential storm which washed out the rest of the day. Overall $180,000 was raised nationally this year. Dragons Abreast Australia is a registered charity, but receives no government funding. It does however have one 15 hours a week administrative person and oodles of loving supportive volunteers. If you would like more information on this fun way to fitness, friends and frivolity, phone Sandy McDonald on 02 6344 1776. Thanks to the many who contributed to the “Booby Cake” drive. PLAGUE LOCUSTS Under the Rural Lands Protection Act 1998, all landholders are required to report the presence of plague locusts on their land to their local Livestock Health and Pest Authority (formerly Rural Lands Protection Boards). They are also required to control locusts, which is most effectively done when the nymphs band together. Insecticide is provided to ratepayers of Livestock Health and Pest Authorities free of charge and can be obtained from your local authority office on 02 6391 3242. Congratulations to the new Canowindra High School captains, Gabrielle Upton and Brydon Hughes and vice captains, Melissa Nash and James Vitnell who were elected last week. The captains were announced at the assembly last Friday in front of the whole school and parents of the elected students. The captains will begin today identifying priorities, targets and strategies for their term in office. The first official duty will be chairing the Remembrance Day Service in Memorial Park on Wednesday. Congratulations once again to the thirteen students who put themselves forward for election. It is envisaged all of these students will be co- opted to various leadership roles over the next twelve months.

To the editor... The Editor, Those with solar power being gener-ated on their roofs, with the surplus returned to the grid, may h a v e n o t r e c e i v e d a n account from Country Energy. The power generated, back into the grid, surplus to domestic need, is re-ceived by Country Energy for nothing. The normal cost to the consumer is thus eliminated by this surplus power generation, therefore no account is received. Yours sincerely

Bill Barwood ——————————————— Cranky Rock Dam plan is now the best option for the future for the Belabula and Lachlan Rivers. The Water Conservation and Irrigation Commission had plans for this dam in the early 1960s and it was to be built after completion of B u r re ndong Dam . Howeve r , Wyangala Dam wall was severely damaged in the wet years from 1947 to 1956. The big flood of 1952 had 14’ (4.27m) over the old spillway and was the biggest flood in the Lachlan since 1916. So, instead of building Cranky Rock Dam, the priority shifted to build new earth wall at Wyangala. After this was completed a small dam was constructed at Carcoar to shut up local critics, which has not helped the river much. The building of a wall at Cranky Rock Gorge would be no more costly than building a new wall downstream at Lake Rowland, but would catch the water from all the tributaries from Coombing Creek to Canomine Creek. This dam would be closer to Orange and Cadia and would give a lot more confidence down the river to the Lachlan. In my opinion building a new wall at Lake Rowlands or increasing the height of the wall at Wyangala are not the best options.

COWS CREATE CAREERS Last Friday, the Year 9 Ag class travelled to the Orange Ex-Services Club for the Cows Create Careers presentation day. It was just us and Dubbo College because Parkes and Forbes didn’t attend. Students listened to speeches from the national co-ordinators of the Cows Create Careers Program. Students were also given a surprise speech from Trevor King who is the consultant for National Dairy Foods. Natalie Hare, Tanisha Whatman and Katelyn Stapleton participated in the quiz where we had to make animal buzzers. Natalie was undeniably awesome and took out first place with her spectacular chicken noise (which Mr McLaughlan could NOT imitate). Taryn, Nicole and Josh took part in the long jump game, which Josh won easily. The TeaTiNaTorS (Taryn Buhagiar, Tahlia Pearce, Natalie Hare, Tanisha Whatman and Simone Middleton) took out the title of ‘Best in the West’ dairy team. To claim this title we presented a powerpoint presentation, poster, two letters to the farmer and Trevor King and caring for the two dairy calves for four weeks. We all enjoyed our delicious free lunch and then headed to Maccas for dessert!! Thank you to Mr McLaughlan, Mr Mooney and Mrs Taylor for being our drivers for the day!!

Natalie Hare and Tanisha Whatman CONSERVATION AGRICULTURE FIELD DAY Trangie Agricultural Research Centre (TARC) is on track to host the 2010 NSW Conservation Agriculture Field Day on Thursday 18 February. Industry & Investment (I&I) NSW TARC manager, Anne Mabey, said the Department was a partner with the Conservation Agriculture and No-till Farming Association (CANFA), Central W est F ar ming Systems an d Riverina-based FarmLink Research in running the popular event. "The field day certainly continues to hit the mark with more than 1000 visitors flocking to this years field day at our Temora research station," Ms Mabey said. "We expect a similar turn-out for Trangie as farmers continue to be drawn to displays of the latest farm technology from controlled traffic and precision agriculture equipment, spray rigs to disc and tyne seeders." CANFA chief executive officer, Neville Gould, said the competition for the best farmer-modified machine, sponsored by The Land, has also been a popular draw-card. "We hope to see next year's competition spark interest from farmers across NSW," Mr Gould said. Farmers and exhibitors can find more information about the 2010 Conservation Agriculture Field Day by contacting Anne Mabey 02 6880 8000, [email protected] or Neville Gould 02 6845 1044, [email protected].

JUNIOR CRICKET Canowindra Under 16s v Grenfell Canowindra Under 16s travelled to Grenfell where captain Blake Willson won the toss and batted. Twin brother Nick Willson scored 20, including one 6, while Mick Clyburn scored 22, also hitting a six. Other run scorers were Blake Willson, 22 retired, Nick Traves 8 ret, Kain Earsman 5, Matt Beaton 10, Harry Myers 4 ret, Connor Bennett 4, James Watson 3 ret, Jamie Grant 11, and Nicole Stevenson 4 for a total score of 139 runs. Grenfell’s innings started well due to some dropped catches from the Canowindra fielders but once Nicole Stevenson bowled Sam Tognetti for 1, Canowindra resumed control. Mick Clyburn, Kain Earsman, Harry Myers, Blake Willson and James Watson got one wicket each, while James Russell chimed in with 2-7 near the end. Some late hitting from Alec Walsh and Lachlan Schneider couldn’t save Grenfell and they were stranded on 115 at the end of their overs. Canowindra Under 14s v Eagle Boys Canowindra captain Rohan Toole, won the toss and sent Eagle Boys in and quickly claimed wickets which limited Eagle Boys scoring. Simon Whatman ran out Amy Edgar for the first wicket, closely followed by a wicket to Tim Middleton and two bowled by Rohan Toole. Brad Napoli retired on 20 for Eagle Boys top score out of their total of 55. The Under 14s run chase started disastrously with Rohan Toole and Simon Whatman out in the first over. Unfortunately this brought Alex Willson to the wicket and he proceeded to score 31 off 2.3 overs which included 5 fours and a six. With the score now on 49 Canowindra’s victory was assured. Eagle Boys continued to bowl so all Canowindra could get a bat and the batting practice came in very useful as Tim Middleton scored 10, Bailey Cain 16, Harry Whatman 9, Bradyn Cassidy 14, Robert Moroney 1 and Stewart Russell with his highest score so far of 7. This week the U16s play Lachlan Fertilizers at the Oval while the U14s play Grenfell at Grenfell, good luck to both sides.
