The episode featuring Canowindra’s Rivers Road Organic Farms will air February 2010. Initially in the area to film the Sakura Matsuri at Cowra, Costa also visited Kitanodai Kaihatsu, an organic market garden in Cowra, and spoke with Wayne McKay from Billimari about canola. Costa tracked down the Rivers Road organic community via Sam Statham from Rosnay Winery through their web- site. CANCER CARE WEST FUNDRAISER A new hospital is currently under construction in Orange which will house a modern cancer treatment facility providing rural patients access to radio therapy as well as other associated cancer treatments. Currently rural residents are required to travel to metro-politan areas for such treatment. This facility will service two thirds of the state, covering far, mid and central NSW, approximately 270,000 people. Statistics show that rural patients currently have a lesser survival rate than our metropolitan counter parts with 35% more likely to die due to lack of access to equitable treatment in rural NSW, also that women in an effort to reduce absence from their families usually opt for a more radical treatment. Cancer now touches the lives of all Australians! We are fundraising to provide on site accommodation for patient and carer which will include their own bedroom and ensuite, a community recreational room, kitchen and laundry facilities. The Mayor of Cabonne, Councillor Kevin Duffy has consented to allowing his mous-tache to be removed and I have consented to allowing my head to be shaved if we can raise a minimum of $15,000 for this more than worthy cause which will not only be of benefit for the residents of Cabonne but for all west of the mountains. “I appeal to you all to take a moment to consider this information and these statistics. I appreciate that in these difficult economic times everyone has reduced spending by choice, I ask you to please consider those who have no choice with this illness, and show your support by sponsoring us in this cause.” Anyone wishing to make a donation can leave it at the Cabonne Office/Library in Gaskill Street. All donations over $2 are tax deductible and shall have a receipt issued. With appreciation of your support, Janelle Culverson More information: www.ccwest.org.au

CANOWINDRA MARKETS ON SATURDAY Spring has sprung and Christmas will be here before we know it. The Rotary Markets are on this Saturday at the Basketball courts, starting at 8am. Why not clear out those cupboards and get together with some friends, hire a site and get money for all those needed Christmas items. The more stalls we have the more people will come and browse. Available for sale at the markets will be tickets in this year’s Rotary Christmas raffle. First prize is a BBQ and second prize is bottles of wine. Also Rotary members will be taking orders for Christmas cakes, these are a rich fruit cake, weighing 1.2kg. Cost of the cake is $20, $5 from each cake sold will be donated to help in the eradication of polio. Cake sales will be available until November 23 and delivery will be by mid December. Further information about the Markets can be obtained from Bill Watson on 6344 1886.

SOLAR PANELS VS RED DUST Top tip from Bill Barwood: clean solar panels thoroughly to ensure optimal performance. Just hosing is insufficient, they have to be scrubbed to remove the fine coating from the recent dust storms.

THE SHED HAIR AND BEAUTY SHEARING

Rob Rogan in full flight judging the Men’s Cake class, onlookers rapt with anticipation

MEN’S CAKE CHALLENGE NO FLOP Ok, so Nick didn’t win this year, however he bowed gracefully in defeat. Ned Curry, Anthony Durkin and Grant Cummings showed that they weren’t afraid of a good challenge, and came up trumps with their cake making ability. The proof is in their pudding...well, cake!

CANOWINDRA CWA NEWS It was decided at the dinner which was held last Thursday 24 September that potential new members of the CWA would become members of the day branch. Many of the women who became new members on Thursday night have work or family commitments which do not allow them to attend the day meetings. These women can now attend night gatherings which will be held on the fourth Thursday of each month. Some members of the day branch will attend the night gatherings to assist with continuity.

The next evening function will be held October 22 at the CWA rooms. Positions will be allocated and ideas collated for interesting speakers and causes to support in the future. Thanks to Sarah Cummings for the professional way she chaired the dinner on Thursday night and for Ros Bullock for being the correspondent. Contact person for the next evening meeting is Ros Bullock 02 6344 1447, who has also established an email distribution list. Please advise Ros if you wish to be included on this list.

GOLF On Sunday 27 September, 21 players competed in the Windowrie Wines sponsored 18 hole stroke monthly medal event . In cold, windy conditions the winner was Peter Kennedy with a nett score of 69. Second was Malcolm Millar with 70, and third was Warren Fisher on 71. A big program of golf is planned for this coming long weekend. On Saturday 3 October a charity day in aid of our local Soldier’s Memorial Hospital will be held. This event is a three person ambrose over 18 holes, with all non-golfers invited to play. There will be lots of auctions, a sausage sizzle, and an auction at the end of the day. On Sunday 4 October a 4 BBB event for the Ron Greentree Memorial will be held. Monday 5 October the course will be open for social golf, so limbre up and come and play a few holes.

SHEARING COMPETITION RESULTS In the SportShear on Saturday, which turned into a marathon event, there were 48 shearers and 17 wool handlers in the competitions. In an almost family result Bill Hutchinson won the Open Shearing and his sister Rachel won the Open Wool Handling. Both now go on the compete in the Australian Titles at Warialda on 9 & 10 October, we wish them both luck. Also, Bill and Rachel’s mother Kim was third in the Novice Wool Handling, so obviously a family that competes together stays together. The future of the SportShear competition appears to be safe as there were nine competitors in the Novice Wool Handling as the young shearers continue to learn their trade. First in the Novice event was Frank Hook, followed by Jamie Boothman, Johnno Baker and Blake Cluff.
