Dear Foundation Friend,

As the incoming chairman of Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation, I want to thank those individuals who have chosen to invest in the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease. As a community, we were proud to celebrate “100 Years of Philanthropy” in 2016, and thanks to your continued generosity, we look forward to a strong beginning as we embark on the next 100 years of care.

Earlier this year, the Foundation launched a three-year strategic plan that will position us to support continued growth and the highest quality of health care. We’ve hit the ground running with the Morgan Heart Hospital Community Challenge – a $5 million challenge to ensure that Morgan Heart stays at the cutting edge of patient-centered cardiac care. No other hospital in the nation has been named a Truven Health Analytics Top 50 Hospital for Cardiovascular Care as often as Morton Plant – 15 times!

I look forward to getting to know each of you and sharing how we’re working together to meet the needs of our community. Never doubt that your contributions are making a significant difference in the lives of our patients every single day.

Thank you for all your support!

Sincerely,

Earle S. CooperBoard Chairman Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation

John G. EstockJohn Estock served as branch manager and shareholder in charge for Concannon Wealth Management’s St. Petersburg office. He also worked for Arthur Young & Co., CPAs, which is now Ernest & Young. Mr. Estock received his Bachelor of Science in accounting from Pennsylvania State University and his MBA from Pace University in New York. He is the past president and board member for the Florida West Coast Chapter of CPAs, Pinellas County Estate Planning Council, and currently serves on our Investment Committee.

Darlene D. FerenzDarlene Ferenz has been a dedicated team member of Morton Plant Mease for nearly 35 years, in which she served as the director of Nursing Strategy and the director of Professional Development and Practice. In this role, she developed a decentralized model of nursing education and served as the nurse leader for The Joint Commission for our hospitals. Ms. Ferenz is a member of the American Nurses Association and the Florida Organization of Nurse Executives, and sits on our Women in Philanthropy steering committee.

A dear friend and supporter of the health care system, Bruce Fyfe, passed away after a short battle with a rare lung disease. Bruce served on the Foundation, Morton Plant Mease Health Care and BayCare Board of Directors for nearly 30 years. Bruce served in many capacities, including chair for both the Foundation and hospital boards. Serving the hospitals for nearly 30 years, he was directly involved in transforming many programs and construction projects.

Bruce believed access to quality health care is an essential component to life, community and family. A memorial fund in his honor has been established to assist members of our community with access to quality health care.

In loving memory of Bruce Fyfe

Dearest Supporter,

Last year marked an extraordinary year of milestones. Morton Plant Hospital celebrated its 100-year anniversary that culminated in grand fashion over three historical events. Morgan Heart Hospital also celebrated its own 10-year anniversary by launching a community challenge that will forever transform your nationally recognized heart hospital.

This year, it’s only fitting that we celebrate you. In 1977, the Morton Plant and Mease Foundations were established. For four decades, it’s you, our community, who continues to care deeply to ensure that the best health care available is provided right here in your hometown.

From the very beginning, our not-for-profit hospitals have been fortunate in its friends – individuals of great generosity and foresight – who not only have given of their own abundance, but by the strength of their leadership have encouraged others to pursue the course of philanthropy.

2017 already looks bright as we continue to build upon the efforts of the past to bridge our future. Thank you for your ongoing investment to assure that the best will continue to get better, year after year, as we continue celebrating generations of philanthropy.

With fond appreciation,

Ernestine Morgan, CFREPresident and CEO Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation

C ELEBRATING MORGAN HEART HOSPITAL’S 10th ANNIVERSARY

O NE PHYSICIAN’S PURSUIT TO HEAL THE MIND, BODY AND SPIRIT

In the acute care setting, quality care not only includes the physical aspects of treatment, but also the spiritual, psychosocial and emotional aspects. For more than 20 years, our community has been investing in our hospitals’ Spirituality and Healing in Medicine programs to enhance the mind, body and spirit of total patient care.

In 2007, the Foundation was first introduced to Dr. Jay Poonkasem, who was then a resident in Turley Family Health Center’s family medicine residency program. Dr. Poonkasem, or “Dr. Jay” as he is often referred to, aspired to do more than just traditional family medicine. As he recalls, “I wanted to think outside the box to acquire a bigger toolkit to help patients cope with chronic pain.”

After extensive research, his hard work was awarded with a Foundation grant to advance his training on the benefits of medical acupuncture. “The Foundation is awesome because the community is able to provide all this education and teaching for our residents,” says Dr. Jay. “You help train one person, but that one person goes

out and reaches so many other people and gives them hope to feel better and overcome their illnesses.” Dr. Jay went on to complete his Administrative Fellowship at the Turley Family Health Center.

Dr. Jay still recalls the time he presented in front of the Foundation’s board of directors a decade ago and someone asked him “What is spirituality?” Dr. Jay remembers pausing for a moment before responding, “Spirituality is different for everyone. Some people think it’s religion. Some people think it’s being with family. And some people think it’s simply sitting on the beach at sunset. So as I told that board member 10 years ago, and still tell people today, spirituality is a personal definition.”

Today, Dr. Jay is the physician leader for Morton Plant Hospital’s palliative care consultation services where he works with an interdisciplinary team to help patients with chronic and severe illnesses.

Dr. Jay also serves on the Foundation’s Spirituality and Healing committee.

Jay Poonkasem, MD, FAAFP, LMT, is the physician leader for Morton Plant Hospital’s Palliative Care team.

Dr. Jay completed his Administrative Fellowship at the Turley Family Health Center.

For the past decade, Morgan Heart Hospital at Morton Plant has been at the cutting edge of patient-centered cardiac care, performing more than 500 open-heart surgeries, 3,800 interventional procedures and 3,200 diagnostic tests annually. No other hospital in the nation has been named a Truven Top 50 Cardiovascular Hospital as many times as Morton Plant — 15 times!

Last fall, in celebration of the 10th anniversary of Morgan Heart Hospital, a dedicated group of community leaders, led by benefactors Kate Tiedemann and Ellen Cotton and Larry and Ernestine Morgan, launched a $5 million community challenge to ensure Morgan Heart Hospital is equipped with the technology and expertise to continue to advance its nationally recognized cardiovascular programs.

“With the revolutionary technology that’s been developed in the last five years, we’re now pushing the limits of Morgan Heart Hospital’s

current platform. As we now begin to manage patients with high-risk cardiovascular diseases, we need to upgrade the technology within the existing rooms, and add additional rooms to meet the demands of the community,” said Dr. Mahesh Amin, medical director, Morton Plant Mease Cardiovascular Service Line. “This includes adding a new hybrid operating room and special recovery room so we can better monitor these patients after high-risk procedures.”

Dr. Amin adds, “Of course, it’s not just the technology and physical space. High-risk and complex cases require teams of expert cardiovascular specialists working together to select the optimal course of treatment for each patient. Our multidisciplinary team works side-by-side every day to perform lifesaving, minimally invasive procedures.”

This fall we are excited to continue celebrating “generations of giving” with the 25th birthday of Planters and the Foundation’s 28th annual Golf Tournament presented by Transamerica.

Planters will host their 25th birthday celebration, featuring guest speaker Navy SEAL (retired) Tom Chaby, on October 3. The highlight of this inspiring luncheon is the presentation of the Lois Odence Endowment Nursing Scholarships — $2,500 need-based scholarships awarded to nurses working at Morton Plant Mease hospitals. Since its founding, Planters has awarded nearly $150,000 in nursing scholarships.

“My late mother Lois Odence was a firm believer in education, and founded Planters in the late 1980s in an effort to better inform women in our community about women’s health issues,” said Planters chair Ruth duPont. “In a most heartfelt effort to continue her legacy and to honor her, the Lois Odence Planters Endowment supports nursing education opportunities throughout the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease. It is my privilege and intent to continue this tradition in support of the nursing students for whom we are all most grateful.”

In November, Belleair Country Club will host the Foundation’s 28th annual Golf Tournament presented by Transamerica and benefiting the Dr. George Morris Earn As You Learn program.

The Earn As You Learn nursing programs have provided scholarship support to more than 800 nursing students at all levels, including over 250 registered nurses, 300 patient care technicians and 14 Master’s-prepared clinical nurse leaders. Your involvement helps us support the education of the most qualified nursing students, ensuring they stay within the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease and provide the highest quality care to our patients.

To learn how you can support these events and make a difference in the lives of our 2,000 nurses, contact Liz Howard, special events manager, at (727) 462-3508.

ARE YOU READY TO '"BATTLE THE BRIDGE?"

Join us on the evening of Friday, September 29, for our annual Rock the Ribbon race. Featuring a 5K, 10K and kids dash, there’s a distance for everyone in the family to run or walk. This year’s race will start at Morton Plant Hospital and 5K and 10K runners will travel through the surrounding neighborhoods, before heading across the beautiful Clearwater Memorial Causeway. Each participant will receive a T-shirt and finisher medal celebrating their accomplishment.

Proceeds from the race will support both the breast and prostate health programs at the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease. These programs include free community screening, education and counseling services.

“Since the inaugural race in 2010, it’s been an honor to be involved in this event that not only raises money for a great cause, but encourages our community to get active and promote breast and prostate cancer awareness,” said M. Scott Klavans, MD, chair of the Rock the Ribbon planning committee. “Early detection is key. And with advanced treatments available, patients can experience a good recovery and an active life.”

So lace up your running shoes and start training to “battle the bridge” with us. We hope to see you on the evening of September 29.

For more information about Rock the Ribbon or to learn how you can sponsor this event, visit Rock-the-Ribbon.org or contact Eric Barsema, community impact director, at (727) 461-8647.

HONORING HIS MOTHER’S LEGACY

When Kip Kelly’s mother passed away from breast cancer in 2010, he knew that he wanted to honor her memory. “I wanted to do something after she passed, something that she would be proud of and that would be a legacy,” he said.

In October 2015, Kelly co-founded Crooked Thumb Brewery in Safety Harbor. Last fall, when they were brewing a Mixed Berry Berliner, it unexpectedly came out of the fermenter pink and Kelly was inspired to donate the proceeds from the sale of the pink beer in October to a charitable organization in honor of his mother.

When he began looking for an organization to partner with, he didn’t have to look far. “When we asked for feedback on a worthy charity to send the proceeds, overwhelmingly the response was the Mammography Voucher Program at the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease,” he said.

And so Drink Pink Safety Harbor was born. In just 10 days, Kelly and his wife rallied businesses in downtown Safety Harbor to join him in offering specialty pink drinks on Saturday, October 15, 2016 with proceeds benefiting the Mammography Voucher Program.

Since 2000, the Mammography Voucher Program has provided comprehensive, case-managed mammograms and clinical breast exams to low-income women in Pinellas County. Kelly’s and their support will help us continue to provide the best quality medical care, regardless of ability to pay.

We’re thankful for individuals like Kip Kelly, who not only support our community, but make it a better place to live.

Kip Kelly, co-founder of Crooked Thumb Brewery, was the driving force behind Drink Pink Safety Harbor.

This past April, our Mease Countryside Hospital Task Forces hosted a mixer at the Crooked Thumb Brewery.

M. Scott Klavans, MD, urologist at Urology Specialists of West Florida, has served as the race champion since its inaugural year.

R EFLECTING ON THE PAST TO PROVIDE FOR THE FUTUREThe Parker family shares a rich history with the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease. Frank Parker, now a retired CPA, was born at Morton Plant Hospital and grew up in Pinellas County before moving to Pasco County more than 45 years ago. His first experience with Morton Plant North Bay Hospital, formerly called West Pasco Hospital, was when the Pasco County Commissioners appointed him to serve on the board.

Frank’s wife, Judy, who has worked her entire life in New Port Richey, also has fond memories of West Pasco Hospital. “I remember first being very excited about New Port Richey getting their own hospital in 1965,” she said. “While the hospital did a great job caring for its community, it wasn’t until it became Morton Plant North Bay Hospital that the campus started transforming.”

In 2010, the hospital embarked on a three-year, $49 million expansion project that doubled its size with the addition of both the Starkey Medical Tower with private patient rooms, the cardiovascular center and the surgery center, and the Medical Arts Building. The hospital also recently renovated its nationally recognized Mitchell Rehabilitation Hospital, which now offers each patient a private room.

The Parkers understand the importance of philanthropy, especially when it comes to supporting West Pasco County’s only not-for-profit hospital. “Giving back to our community is the best way to help our fellow neighbors,” says Judy. “Our community is rich with good friends who appreciate how important it is to have state-of-the-art care in our backyard. We feel proud knowing any amount, even if small, can make a lasting difference for future generations.”

That legacy has continued with Judy and Frank’s youngest daughter, Susan, who was also born at Morton Plant Hospital and is a proud member of the hospital’s Father-Daughter Alumni Club. Susan has worked as a registered nurse at Morton Plant North Bay Hospital for the past 14 years. “I can’t imagine working anywhere else that doesn’t share our family-friendly culture,” she said. Thanks to the legacy of support from families like the Parkers, Morton Plant North Bay Hospital is currently in the middle of a two-year expansion and renovation project that saw the hospital open a new main entrance and lobby late last year. Scheduled to be completed by the end of the year, the hospital is currently building a new Emergency Department, featuring 28 all-private treatment rooms and a new observation unit.

Morton Plant North Bay Hospital leaders and donors Frank and Judy Parker are proud to support the quality of care in their community.

Morton Plant North Bay Hospital’s new Emergency Department will have 28 all-private treatment rooms.

This year's Rock the Ribbon race will be held on Friday, September 29, in Clearwater.

S URVIVING BREAST CANCER: WHY COMPASSIONATE CARE MADE A DIFFERENCE

“Cancer is terrible.” Mary Lallucci knows all about it. Diagnosed in 2012 with stage II breast cancer only eight months after her last negative mammogram, Mary just couldn’t believe the news. “I always take care of myself and I had regular mammograms,” she said, “But I found a lump under my arm and apparently the undetected cancer had moved to my lymph nodes.”

Mary was proactive about her care and sought opinions from three different doctors. She’d heard a lot about Dr. Peter Blumencranz at Morton Plant Hospital, and ultimately selected him as her lumpectomy surgeon. What she didn’t realize at the time was that she’d be getting more than a surgeon; soon she met oncologist Dr. Hitesh Patel, and then Dr. Hirel Shah came on board as her radiologist.

“This team at Morton Plant knew exactly what to do,” she said. “I was in shock and worried about dying, and I felt like this team of doctors put a big blanket of protection around me.”

Mary remembers how much she appreciated the compassionate care she received as she started her long journey to beat her cancer. “They explained everything to me, step by step, as we moved through all the different stages of treatment. They told me what they would do, why they were doing it and the impact it would have on me.” She found a lot of comfort in the expertise the team

displayed and the way they helped her through her treatment.

Describing the roller coaster of surgery, chemotherapy and radiation she went through, Mary says she was really undergoing a huge physical endurance test, as well as a mental challenge. “You have to drive yourself through it,” she said. “But my husband Phil was the biggest hero of my journey. He held my hand for all 10 months — went to every doctor appointment and never left my side. Fighting cancer is hard, but I think for the caregiver, it’s even harder. Phil never complained and never lost his focus or strength. Phil, my family and my circle of friends really helped me get through it.”

Mary remains grateful to this day for her doctors as well as the nurses who helped her. “They were the kindest, most understanding and caring people that get you through the journey. If you find yourself needing help, we have some great resources in this community,” Mary said. “If there is such a thing as a positive experience while fighting cancer, I found it.”

Join WEDU PBS and Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation for an educational cruise in November. While aboard the beautiful Crystal Serenity, you’ll have the opportunity to learn from financial and health care experts, including our own Dr. Peter Blumencranz and Dr. Joshua Rovin.

S UPPORT THE FOUNDATION WITH AN IRA DISTRIBUTION

E XPANDING OUR MEN’S GIVING CIRCLETerry Reavis is a man who believes in giving back to the community. “I’ve been blessed, and it feels great to improve the quality of health care in our area,” he said, looking relaxed at a Starbucks in Countryside. Born in Winston Salem, North Carolina, and a graduate of the University of North Carolina, Terry enjoyed a very successful career that included working for Apple the year they introduced the Mac computer. He also served as vice president of Eastern U.S. Sales for Tech Data, retiring after he oversaw U.S. sales for ViewSonic Corporation.

Terry became involved with Morton Plant Mease Health Care Foundation after close friends invited him to a physician meet-and-greet. “I was most impressed by the fact that the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease are not-for-profit entities. They’re truly owned by the community, not some huge, faceless organization that exists to make money for their shareholders.” His desire to be involved with the Foundation was reinforced by a family medical emergency.

Terry recently joined the Foundation’s Mease Countryside Hospital Task Force and shortly thereafter he joined the newly formed Men’s Giving Circle. Men’s Giving Circle is a group of forward-thinking gentlemen who meet throughout the year to discuss men’s health issues and combine their gifts to support programs at the hospitals of Morton Plant Mease.

Terry is looking forward to getting involved and educating his community. “It would be great to get folks up here in the Countryside/East Lake area to feel the same way about Mease Countryside Hospital as the folks down in Clearwater feel about Morton Plant. After all, it’s our community hospital. Why wouldn’t we want it to be the best?” he added.

For more information about the Men’s Giving Circle, contact Stuart Berger, development director, at (727) 461-8636.
