Thoughts from Pastor Andrew cont. on page 4

Dear Members of Shepherd of the Hills, I am so eager to begin our new Sunday morning Bible Study on Christian eschatology. If you are not familiar with the term, “eschatology,” it basically per-

tains to those things having to do with the End Times- either for ourselves as individuals or the world in general. Eschatology bravely takes up questions about death, heaven, hell, the Second Coming, the Final Judgement and the Resurrection of the Dead. These topics DO NOT just belong in seminary lecture halls or in high falutin, fancy-schmancy theological texts written by stodgy old curmudgeons who have nothing better to do (yawn). No, eschatology, you will soon discover, is a deeply personal exploration into what it really means to be human, possessed of an immortal soul, but born into a world that is destined to end. The implications, therefore, are monumental and impact our daily lives more than we immediately realize. And on these manifold mysteries, the New Testament authors are not short on commentary, but replete with numerous invitations to trust in the eventual unveiling of God’s plan for all of crea-tion. Indeed, the Master Himself spoke largely on the inevitabilities that render our present context a mere morning mist that fades with the rising of the sun. Together, we will look deeply into

August portends to be a very busy month for SOTH. It will begin with 15 ad-ditional new members. Let’s all make an additional effort to wear our name badges to help the new folks feel more at home right away.

Pastor will begin a new bible study on eschatology. This should be a very in-teresting and enlightening study. The Crossville Gospel Challenge will begin on Aug. 12th. The first reading will be held at the Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church. It would be very nice if we have a good turn out from SOTH as Pastor Andrew instigated this program in Cumberland County.

On Aug 2nd the safety committee comprised of Wayne Croy, Robert Skewis, Jim Bandazewski, Rick Severson and Joe Marko will offer a self-defense active shooter program presented by the Cumberland Co. Sherrif’s department. The program will begin at 11 am. in the Gathering Room. All are encouraged to attend.

July was a great month for SOTH with the completion of the canopy, the Je-sus loves the little children service, the welcoming of our new members. Judy got a well-deserved vacation week. It was all good and the future looks bright.

Your fellow servant in Christ,

Curt

A request was made for the recipe for Cheesecake bars served at

Audrey Hinzman’s funeral. We thank Elaine Braun for sharing

this delicious recipe.

Cheesecake Lemon Bars

1/3 cup brown sugar 1/2 cup pecans chopped 1 cup flour 1/3 cup butter melted

Mix above and press into 8" or 9inch pan reserving 1/3 cup of crumb mixture for later. Bake 12 min

Meanwhile mix in small bowl until smooth

1 8oz cream cheese & 1/4 cup sugar. Then add the following: 1 egg 1 Tbsp lemon juice 2 Tbsp milk 1 tsp vanilla

Pour over crust. Sprinkle remaining crumb mixture on top. Bake 25 min at 350 degrees. Cool and eat

*You can add a handful of blueberries or rasp to batter before baking

We are so lucky to have so many great cooks. Our pot lucks and funeral luncheons give us the opportunity to taste some wonderful dishes. We get requests occasionally for a recipe or two. At the same luncheon, a delicious bean salad was served. It wasn’t the usual three bean salad. It had feta cheese, tomatoes and ??? That made it

really good. If that was your dish, please give the recipe to Sue Moosekian and she will share it in next month’s Staff.

A collage of SOTH activities in July!

We were blessed to hear the beautiful music made by Amy Carty on her harp. Her contribution to the service that Sunday was perfect. Thanks to all who contributed to our freewill offering for her. Over $1100.00 was collected and through tears Amy thanked us all.

Dean Towers shared his expertise with our Ladies Fellowship. He

shared some easy recipes that we will certainly be able to prepare with ease

The youth group went on a road trip to KY this month to visit the Noah’s Ark replica. 28 kids and adults went . Be sure to look

for Pastor’s story about their return trip home in next month’s Staff. It’s hilarious! Also additional pictures will be available.

STEPHEN MINISTRY Paul Wiegert, Stephen Ministry Director

“THOUGHT YOU WOULD LIKE TO KNOW”

Recently upon visiting my Oncologist after taking my CT scan, “Would you like to come in for a scan six months from now on instead of three months? “ With a great big smile on my face I said “SURE” On my way home from Nashville, I thought back four years when my journey with

cancer began. No one can imagine the shock until you experience it, when the doctor tells you that you have cancer. Your world for the most part is turned upside down. Time, for a moment, stands still. Your mind begins to wonder what will I be going through.

I wish that I had had the book “CANCER – Now What?” when I was going through my ordeal. This book was written by Dr. Rev. Kenneth C. Haugk, founder of Stephen Ministry. It is based on both personal experience and extensive research. Dr. Haugk, learned much along with his wife Joan during her three-and a- half year battle with ovarian cancer. As a clinical psychologist and a pastor, Dr. Haugh has cared for many people affected by can-cer. In addition to this, he drew on his background as a trained researcher, working with a team to gather the experiences and wisdom of more than 3,500 survivors, loved ones, physicians, and other medical professionals.

Before publication 131 physicians, including 25 oncologists, read the book and shared their insights. This response from one oncologist sums up what he heard.

“Cancer- Now What” empowers patients and families to navigate the physical, psy-chological, and spiritual complexities of cancer. It is a tremendous resource- thorough yet understandable, carefully and thoughtfully written. To all my few oncologists I say : Give this book to your patients! They will be better informed, more focused, and better commu-nicators. Your patients will benefit- and so will you.”

Our Stephen Ministry group has read and studied this wonderful book and we have decided to share this book with the members of SOTH who are diagnosed with cancer. If for some reason you are diagnosed with cancer and we for some reason are not aware of it, please by all means contact me, or one of the other Stephen Ministers, or the Church office and we will supply you with a copy of this book.

It is our prayer that those who read it will benefit greatly from what they read. This book will equip them to face their ordeal with their eyes wide open and with prayer and the promises that God gives us through His Word, they will not be traveling alone.

Rev. Paul H. Wiegert

4:30—5:30 P M 6:00—7:00 P M

After a summer vacation the choirs are refreshed and ready to resume this ministry. We are all looking

forward to the music to be made in celebration of the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation. Please pray

about joining our choirs to help with the beautiful music that proclaims God’s Word. Being able to read music

is helpful but not required for either bells or choir.

“Next to the Word of God, the noble art of Music is the greatest treasure in the workl.” Martin Luther

Do you know what our “Helping Hands Ministry” does? Do you know who are the Help-

ing Hands? Helping Hands Ministry is you and me. People who care about the needs of our fel-low members.

We provide meals to the temporarily home-bound or “just home from the hospital” members who need a little help. We provide rides to the doctor, dentist and physical therapy. Pick up prescriptions and shop for needed groceries. We also give caregivers some free time by providing a volunteer to sit with the member in need for 1 to 3 hours.

We call members listed in the bulletin to check on their well-being and possible needs. We try and match volunteers to those in need by utilizing zip codes.

Helping Hands is another vital part of our church family. Our hope is that you will consid-

er joining this very appreciated ministry. We are up-dating our list of helpers. If you are interest-

ed in helping please contact Marianne Langeland, 484-2728.

A note from the editor: Each month The Staff is introducing you to one of the ministries we have here

at SOTH. These are some of the ministries/committees that do not have a regular monthly article in the Staff. Their quiet, behind the scenes contributions are vital to the core of our church but you may not know what they do or even that they exist. This month we are looking at our “Helping Hands” ministry.

Property Guys John Wedlund, chairman

If you are new to the church, or maybe you’ve been here for a while and God has blessed you with any kind of maintenance skills, our Property Guys meet every Tuesday and address maintenance around the church grounds. AND you don’t even have to be a guy! If God leads you in this direction, please heed His call!! Talk to John Wedlund for more information.

Painter: If you are looking for someone to paint your house, I highly recommend Raimond Laudurgs. He put a fresh coat of paint on the exterior of the Fellowship hall, and it looks fantastic. The outside of the building has not been painted in over 30 years. I got to see the “perfectionist” prepare the building with primer, cover areas that didn’t need paint, and apply 20 gallons of finish coat. Great job! And Bill Hinterman just installed a really neat lighting system under the new canopy on the Fel-lowship hall. Speaking of perfectionists, Phil Winterroth installed another lattice fencing around a HVAC unit located on the southwest corner of the church building. It looks good. And Bill Hinterman, Jack Fra-zier, Earl Leshinski, and Jim Hardy are working on refurbishing a donated basketball set. Bill Reed continues to keep the information sign on the front lawn up to date. He and Tom Bald-win keep busy with other maintenance chores also. Karan Wedlund is keeping the weeds “in check”, and she ensures the rose bushes and the “baby boxwood” bushes are getting enough water. Len Braun has really been working hard removing the weeds from the berms that surround the columbarium (memorial gardens). We are blessed to have the guys and gals that come to the church every week to do the repair and maintenance of our facilities and grounds. I always thank the Lord for them and for what they do.

Try it, you’ll like it!!!

One of our most important ministry’s here at Shepherd of the Hills is our Greeters. It doesn’t seem like it should be that important does it? I will tell you from personal experiences at other Lutheran churches, SOTH is one of the most welcoming. It is not by accident. We are a very friendly, caring congregation and that comes through to anyone who visits our church. If you talk to any new members they will sing praises about how we welcome visitors.

Now, knowing how important it is to have greeters at our doors wel-coming members and visitors alike, PLEASE come forward and sign up to

meet and greet once or twice a year, or whenever you are available. There is a sign up sheet in the Gathering Place.

Please consider signing up for this ministry.

8/16 Servant Event @ Threads of

Hope Thrift Store

[email protected]

Calle Delta D-51

Urb. Papa Juan XXIII

San Borja, Lima, Peru

Unfortunately, we had to cancel our Mission in Motion Servant Event at Bread of Life last month, due to medical problems of several of our Board members. God willing, we’ll all be back in service again real soon, and we can reschedule another date in the future.

Until then, our mission service goes on! We will be heading back to Threads of Hope Thrift Store for our next MIM Servant Event on Wednesday, August 16th at 9:30AM, sorting seasonal clothing for them to process for sale. Everyone is welcome to join the fun and cash in on the 10% savings they offer us on purchases that day. They provide refreshments, and we create the fun as we plow through their mountain of donations, always finding treasures to add to our own wardrobes. Ulti-mately, children and families in Cumberland county benefit through this mission service endeavor. Please note the date on your calendars and plan to be with us. A sign-up sheet is in the Gathering Place.

Are your feet running in all directions, aching to be put up, or longing to walk alongside others? No matter where you are in your faith walk, the Lord has equipped you with uniquely beautiful feet! (Yes, your feet are beautiful!) Join us as we “lift the lid” off several shoe boxes to examine various styles of shoes and learn how each represents a portion of our walk with the Lord! What is your “shoe size?” What makes truly beautiful feet? And what has the Lord called these beautiful feet to do?

Coming Next Month: “Beautiful Feet” LWML District Retreat

Whether you shuffle, walk, boogie, or run, bring your beautiful feet to the LWML Mid-South East Tennessee District Retreat, “Beautiful Feet,” from 4PM Friday, September 22 until mid-morning on Sunday, September 24 at picturesque Eagle Rock Camp and Retreat Center, located in the spec-tacular Smokey Mountains, 15 miles south of Knoxville. Prepare to be swept off your feet as we take a walk in the Word together, enjoy fabulous food and tasty treats, tap our toes to praise music, and kick up our heals, sharing encouragement, fellowship and fun in Christ! Questions? Contact Debe Hinterman or Jan Simko for more information about this knock-your-socks-off exciting event!

POSITIVE CHANGE BEGINS BY TAKING ACTION – VOLUNTEER WITH THRIVENT FI-NANCIAL SEPTEMBER 2nd, 10 a.m. to Noon

Thrivent Financial will be sponsoring an Action Team service project for: PLATEAU PREGNANCY SERVICES

Plateau Pregnancy Services is a Christian outreach ministry committed to providing whole health edu-cation, support to teens and women in unplanned pregnancies, as well as healing and recovery from past abortions, abuse, bad choices and life’s hurts. We are asking for donations of: Washcloths, bars of soap, deodorant, small shampoos and conditioners, toothpaste, tooth brushes and combs. Travel size items are preferred. All items will be put in gallon size baggie packets. Also needed are size 3, 4 and 5 diapers. Packets of 6 diapers will be made up and be distributed with health care packets, and as needed. A Thrivent table will be set up at the Fairfield Glade Craft Fair, held in the open area at the 4-way stop. Assembly of packets will be September 2nd from 10 a.m. to Noon. We need volunteers to help with the as-sembly of packets.

The Crossville Gospel-Challenge

1517-2017 Throughout 2017, Christians around the world will be celebrating the 500th anniversary of the Protestant Reformation, which began on October 31st of 1517 by Martin Luther when he nailed his earth-shattering 95 Thesis to a church door in Wittenberg, Germany. One of the most significant outcomes of the Reformation was the translation of the Sacred Scriptures into languages that could be read and understood by the common man. To celebrate the greatness of this revolutionary turn of events in Christian history, some of the pastors of Crossville are collaborating for public readings of the Four Holy Gospels. Each one of the Gospels will be read aloud in its entirety at four hosting churches, which will all be on Saturday mornings and beginning at 9PM.

The Gospel of Matthew: August 12 Fairfield Glade First Baptist Church 130 Town Center Road The Gospel of Mark: September 9 First Presbyterian Church 15 Rock Quarry Rd, Crossville, TN

The Gospel of Luke: October 7 Shepherd of the Hills Lutheran 1461 Sparta Hwy, Crossville, TN The Gospel of John: October 28 Pomona United Methodist Church 57 Pow Camp Road, Crossville, TN

The Gospels will be read from the English Standard Version, and at each of the four events, the Gideons will be present and ready to distribute FREE BIBLES in this translation for any who come.

Each hosting church will take up an offering to go toward Crossville Christian School.

But these are written so that

you may believe that Jesus is

the Christ, the Son of God,

and that by believing you may

have life in his name.

We thank the entire Congregation for participation and prayers in the Consecrate Stewards Program! Steward-ship means worshipping God with our time, talents and treasures! Your gifts to the Lord through Shepherd of the Hills are most appreciated! As promised, Mary Beck, our Financial Secretary was responsible for consolidating results from the commit-ments received. Her report is shown below. Nancy Burns, Board of Church Stewardship Chair Report from Mary Beck, Financial Secretary: The Consecrated Stewards program was a success with 77 out of 172 giving units making a monetary commit-ment to SOTH. The commitments totaled $281,776! If you would still like to complete a commitment card, it is not too late! Please put in Mary Beck’s church mailbox (in an envelope). This is an ongoing and confidential process. It helps SOTH with planning for the future! CREATIVE CONTRIBUTIONS Some suggestions from the Boards of Finance and Stewardship for electronic contribution options Based on inquiries from SOTH Members, the Boards of Finance and Stewardship have been researching options for electronic contributions. Diane Soenen, Church Board of Finance Chair, explains the Auto Bill Pay option: “A simple alternative is for members to send their offerings directly to SOTH using their bank’s Bill Pay feature. Members can login to their bank’s website, and make a payment to SOTH just like they would pay bills such as their mortgage, credit card, electric bill, etc. Since we are not set up to receive electronic funds transfers, their bank would send a check directly to us, and we would process it just like we do checks placed in the offering plate on Sun-day morning. This Bill Pay can also be set up so that it sends the same amount on the same date every month, or even once every week; this is called Auto Bill Pay.” Member experience: “Gerry and I have been using this option for over a year and we really like it! Although I had some questions/reservations at first (I preferred to put something “in the basket,” etc.), this has been a very easy, consistent way for us to keep our SOTH contributions “steady” and “carefree!” When the contribution arrives at church, it is given directly to our Financial Secretary, just like those put in the basket at church. Every Sunday, the ushers are very nice and understanding. When we are on vacation, we don’t have to worry about “catching up” when we get back.” This is a “win-win”- --convenient for us; consistency for the church. (Nancy Burns, Board of Church Stewardship) QUALIFIED CHARITABLE DISTRIBUTIONS: Members who are 70 1/2 years or more can make a contribution directly to the church from an IRA. The church is a charitable organization and qualifies as a recipient of a Qualified Charitable Deduction. The contribution amount is not taxable to you, and cannot be used as a tax deduction on your taxes. If you are interested in making a contribution to Shepherd of the Hills from your IRA, please consult with your financial adviser for more details.

SUNDAY Adult Bible Class 9:15 AM

Our Bible Study Focus

Christian Eschatology August 6th begins Pastor Andrew’s study of the mysteries of Death, Judgemnet, Heaven, Hell, the Resurrection of the Dead, the Second Coming and

the Last Day. The content of this course matters greatly to us, and they need to be explored and discussed. It will last several months. Bring your Bible. Bring your questions. Bring your friends! All are invited. Not one single itty-bitty piece of this class will be even slightly boring. On the contrary, it will be riveting and fun and we will all learn a lot—

A WHOLE LOT!
