Gospel: Matthew 3: 13-17

Dear Parishioners, In this wonderful time between Christmas and Epiphany, we contemplate the mystery of

God-with/among-us ("Emmanuel"), who was adored in the stable of Bethlehem, then in a (presumably) nearby house by the Magi from the East. "Come let us adore Him", perhaps the most famous of all Christmas carols, in many of the variants available to us, connects this adoration given to the newborn Christ to Eucharistic Adoration. It is the same Christ whom we adore, present in the Holy Sacrament of the Altar, and whom we receive better for the invigorated faith and more ardent love for Him deriving from that adoration. In the Mass, at the moment of Holy Communion, God-with-us becomes God-within-us. If we were given the Infant Christ to hold, we

would receive Him with ineffable emotion and the most profound reverence. How much, therefore, should we love and adore Him as we receive Him in Holy Communion?

In Christ, Fr Scot Anthony Armstrong

Our History: Fr Graham Elliott Fr Graham Elliott served as Ekibin Parish Priest from 1976 to 1999.

Fr Elliott attended St Edmund’s College at Ipswich, before entering Banyo Seminary in 1952. He served as associate pastor at Holy Family, Indooroopilly; St Paschal, Wavell Heights; and St Oliver Plunkett, Cannon Hill. He was the Parish Priest at Esk from 1968 until his appointment to Ekibin.

In 1984, Fr Elliott celebrated the 25th Anniversary of his ordination to the

priesthood with a special concert featuring songs and skits performed by various parishioners. He was known to many as ‘Herb Elliot,’ (Australian Sprinter) as he was a quick speaker and you could easily miss Mass if you were running late.

Fr struggled with heat due to a health condition and installed numerous fans in the Sanctuary which made him hard to hear in the back pews.

Fr also enjoyed playing pranks on his fellow priests. One night, Fr Sullivan asked Fr Elliott to record the Gold Lotto numbers for him whilst he went for a walk. Fr copied Fr Sullivan’s numbers and made Fr Sullivan believe that he won the jackpot.

Fr Elliott was a very popular priest and it was with great shock and sadness when he died unexpectedly shortly after Easter on 7

th April

1999 aged 65, in the 39th year of his priesthood and 23 years as

Parish Priest.

Reflection Do not let a single day pass without doing some good in it. St Philip Neri

'The first consequence (of remembering that prayer is the result of God's grace and not the use of some technique) is that, even though methods can be helpful in mental prayer, we should not attach much importance to them, much less imagine that everything depends on them. To do that would mean centering the life of prayer on ourselves instead of God, and that is just the mistake we should avoid. Nor should we imagine that all we need is a bit of practice, of learning certain "tricks", and then all our difficulties, distractions, etc., will just vanish. The profound logic of growth and progress in the spiritual life belongs to a totally different order. And that is just as well, for if the edifice of prayer had to be built up on our own efforts we wouldn't get very far. St Teresa of Avila says "the whole edifice of prayer is founded upon humility" - on the conviction that of ourselves we

Care For Our Common World Living Laudato Si……..Think Globally, Act Locally

Saturday February 15th 2020 9.00am-1.45pm

Our Lady Queen of Apostles, 70 Appleby Rd, Stafford

“The earth is essentially a shared inheritance, whose fruits are meant to benefit everyone.” (Pope Francis, Laudato Si, Chapter 2)

We are called to learn, to understand, to reflect and to act

upon the wisdoms of Pope Francis as he challenges all

people of good will to make an ‘ecological conversion’.

At the community forum we will look at the message within

Laudato Si, engage with guest speakers from government,

non government and Christian organisations, exchange ideas

and grow in knowledge, so that we are better equipped to

care for our Common Home.

The Epiphany of the Lord, Year A – 4th/5th January, 2020

MASS READINGS

First Reading: Isaiah 60:1-6

Arise, shine out, for your light has come, the glory of the Lord is rising on you, though night still covers the earth and darkness the peoples. Above you the Lord now rises and above you his glory appears. The nations come to your light and kings to your dawning brightness. Lift up your eyes and look round: all are assembling and coming towards you, your sons from far away and your daughters being tenderly carried. At this sight you will grow radiant, your heart throbbing and full; since the riches of the sea will flow to you; the wealth of the nations come to you; camels in throngs will cover you, and dromedaries of Midian and Ephah; everyone in Sheba will come, bringing gold and incense and singing the praise of the Lord.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 71

(Said by all)

O God, give your judgment to the king, to a king's son your justice, that he may judge your people in justice and your poor in right judgement.

In his days justice shall flourish and peace till the moon fails. He shall rule from sea to sea, from the Great River to earth's bounds.

The kings of Tarshish and the sea coasts shall pay him tribute. The kings of Sheba and Seba shall bring him gifts. Before him all kings shall fall prostrate, all nations shall serve him.

For he shall save the poor when they cry and the needy who are helpless. He will have pity on the weak and save the lives of the poor.

Second Reading: Ephesians 3:2-3, 5-6

You have probably heard how I have been entrusted by God with the grace he meant for you, and that it was by a revelation that I was given the knowledge of the mystery. This mystery that has now been revealed through the Spirit to his holy apostles and prophets was unknown to any men in past generations; it means that pagans now share the same inheritance, that they are parts of the same body, and that the same promise has been made to them, in Christ Jesus, through the gospel.

The Word of the Lord Response: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia, alleluia! We have seen his star in the east; and have come to adore the Lord. Alleluia!

Gospel: Matthew 2:1-12

After Jesus had been born at Bethlehem in Judaea during the reign of King Herod, some wise men came to Jerusalem from the east. 'Where is the infant king of the Jews?' they asked. 'We saw his star as it rose and have come to do him homage.' When King Herod heard this he was perturbed, and so was the whole of Jerusalem.

He called together all the chief priests and the scribes of the people, and enquired of them where the Christ was to be born.

'At Bethlehem in Judaea,' they told him 'for this is what the prophet wrote: And you, Bethlehem, in the land of Judah, you are by no means least among the leaders of Judah, for out of you will come a leader who will shepherd my people Israel.' Then Herod summoned the wise men to see him privately. He asked them the exact date on which the star had appeared, and sent them on to Bethlehem. 'Go and find out all about the child,' he said 'and when you have found him, let me know, so that I too may go and do him homage.' Having listened to what the king had to say, they set out. And there in front of them was the star they had seen rising; it went forward and halted over the place where the child was. The sight of the star filled them with delight, and going into the house they saw the child with his mother Mary, and falling to their knees they did him homage. Then, opening their treasures, they offered him gifts of gold and frankincense and myrrh. But they were warned in a dream not to go back to Herod, and returned to their own country by a different way.

The Gospel of the Lord.

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.
