Readings for next Sunday

15th/16th September

1st: Isaiah 50: 5-9

2nd: James 2: 14-18

Gospel: Mark 8: 27-35

Dear Parishioners, The Annual Catholic Campaign will be held this weekend to raise funds for Holy Spirit Seminary, Centacare, retired priests and Catholic Education. We have been overwhelmed with materials to provide in greater and greater anticipation for the occasion, so you will need no

reminders from me about the appeal. A return to normality should follow, one would hope.

Our next Oratorio is approaching: Sunday 16th September, at 7.30pm, Mary Immaculate church. In past years this third Oratorio for the year has been dedicated to sacred music composed in honour of Mary, the Mother of God, and this year continues that custom. Choral works will be alternated with instrumental music, not just to break up the monotony, but to provide a sampling of the ways in which musical genius has striven to

give honour to Our Lady and glory to God. All are warmly invited. The concert is free, but leaving donations following the performance are gratefully accepted.

in Christ, Fr Scot Anthony Armstrong

Traditional Divine Office Class: The Traditional Divine Office class will take place on Saturday 29th September immediately after the 8:15am Mass at Mary Immaculate church. If you have a traditional (1960) Roman Breviary, bring it along, though it is not compulsory as texts from the Office will be provided. Location to be announced.

Reflection

Be devout to the Madonna, keep yourself from sin, and God will deliver you from your evils.

St Philip Neri

***

On how God can draw good even from our faults: "St Therese of the Child Jesus loved greatly this phrase of St John of the Cross: 'The Divine Love is able to profit from everything, the good as well as the bad that It finds in me, and to transform it into Itself.' God, once we return with a contrite heart, is able to cause good to spring forth, if only to make us grow in humility and to teach us to have a little less confidence in our own strength and a

little more in him alone. Bl Jan van Ruysbroek, a Flemish mystic has these words: 'The Lord, in His clemency, wanted to turn our sins against themselves and in our favour; He found a way to render them useful, to convert them in our hands into instruments of salvation. This should in no way diminish our fear of sinning, nor our pain in having sinned. Rather, our sins have become for us a source of humility." They can just as well become a source of tenderness and mercy towards others. The sign of spiritual progress is not so much never falling as it is being able to lift oneself up quickly after one falls." (See J. Philippe, Searching For and Maintaining Peace [Sceptre, New York, 2002]

Tuesday Rosary: On all Tuesdays in September, the Holy Rosary is recited for 'those who are humble; they will receive what God has promised!' And for the Pope, the Bishops and the Priests, through the intercession of Our Lady of Grace. It begins 10 minutes after the 7am Mass in Mary Immaculate Church. All welcome. THE SPIRITUAL EXERCISES OF ST. IGNATIUS 19th ANNOTATION RETREAT IN DAILY LIFE, OFFERED AT THE ORATORY

If you have a reasonably well-developed and committed prayer life, perhaps the Lord is calling you to experience these Spiritual Exercises in this setting between October 2018 and June 2019? If you believe so, you are invited to send a confidential email to Fr Wise, outlining briefly why you feel called to take part in this retreat in daily life at this point in your life. Please email [email protected] by September 14th. See the Oratory’s Facebook page for further information.

MASS READINGS

First Reading: Isaiah 35:4-7

Say to all faint hearts, ‘Courage! do not be afraid. Look, your God is coming, vengeance is coming, the retribution of God; he is coming to save you.' Then the eyes of the blind shall be opened, the ears of the deaf unsealed, then the lame shall leap like a deer and the tongues of the dumb sing for joy; for water gushes in the desert, streams in the wasteland, the scorched earth becomes a lake, the parched land springs of water.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Responsorial Psalm 145 (Said by all)

It is the Lord who keeps faith for ever, who is just to those who are oppressed. It is he who gives bread to the hungry, the Lord, who sets prisoners free.

It is the Lord who gives sight to the blind, who raises up those who are bowed down, the Lord who loves the just, the Lord who protects the stranger.

The Lord upholds the widow and orphan, but thwarts the path of the wicked. The Lord will reign for ever, Zion's God, from age to age.

Second Reading: James 2:1-5

My brothers, do not try to combine faith in Jesus Christ, our glorified Lord, with the making of distinctions between classes of people. Now suppose a man comes into your synagogue, beautifully dressed and with a gold ring on, and at the same time a poor man comes in, in shabby clothes, and you take notice of the well-dressed man, and say, 'Come this way to the best seats’; then you tell the poor man, 'Stand over there' or 'You can sit on the floor by my foot-rest.' Can't you see that you have used two different standards in your mind, and turned yourselves into judges, and corrupt judges at that?

Listen, my dear brothers: it was those who are poor according to the world that God chose, to be rich in faith and to be the heirs to the kingdom which he promised to those who love him.

The Word of the Lord

Response: Thanks be to God

Gospel Acclamation:

Alleluia, alleluia! Jesus preached the Good News of the kingdom and healed all who were sick. Alleluia!

Gospel: Mark 7:31-37

Returning from the district of Tyre, Jesus went by way of Sidon towards the sea of Galilee, right through the Decapolis region. And they brought him a deaf man who had an impediment in his speech; and they asked him to lay his hand on him. He took him aside in private, away from the crowd, put his fingers into the man's ears and touched his tongue with spittle.

Then looking up to heaven he sighed; and he said to him, `Ephphatha', that is, `Be opened'. And his ears were opened, and the ligament of his tongue was loosened and he spoke clearly. And Jesus ordered them to tell no one about it, but the more he insisted, the more widely they published it. Their admiration was unbounded. `He has done all things well,' they said `he makes the deaf hear and the dumb speak.'

The Gospel of the Lord

Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ
