Bewdley NeedsYou!!!It’s at this time of year that Bewdley’s multitude of volunteer groups starts gearing up theevents calendar. Probably the biggest of these is the Festival team, who are already well un-derway preparing big time entertainment for next October. The recent sponsor’s receptionat beautiful Kateshill House showed just how strong the interest in the Festival is – now in its24th year. I am sworn to secrecy, of course, but as the Festival’s Empress, Jenny Paddock hasalready spilled the beans about who is not coming, I can announce that George Clooney andBrad Pitt have declined.Apparently, they don’t wish to be upstaged by our local Adonis-likedignitaries, Derek Killingworth and Paul Gittens, who bear a striking resemblance to a Holly-wood double-act from another era – think bowler hats and a piano!

Seriously, though, Bewdley’s committees and events organisers need new blood. Already pastmy first half century, I am considered the rookie on the block by the Festival Committee, sowe definitely need new helpers to add energy and ideas to the mix. Just off the top of myhead we have the Spring Fair, Discover Bewdley, the 40sWeekends, the Regatta,The HarvestFair, Octoberfest,The Festival, Christmas lights and much, much more to look forward to. It’swhat makes Bewdley unique in this part of the world. It also brings the community togetherand will make 2011 a happier year for us all.All this takes an mighty amount of work. There isa huge talent resource in Bewdley, so go on, get off your backsides and volunteer. It’s fun! Youcan find most of the contacts through the Festival Office at Snuff Mill on Park Lane orthrough the Bewdley DevelopmentTrust at the same address.

Free course on orchardsThere are free courses for people who have an orchard orwould like to plant one. They are on Friday 18th and Saturday19th March at Uncllys Farm, Bewdley. Full details can beprovided by Emma Bogaard on 01299 488083([email protected] ).The courses are led byWorcestershire County Council’s orchard expertWadeMuggleton and will include good orchard practice, preparingorchard management plans and pruning.

“This is the second course of its type that we have run” saidEmma Bogaard. “The last course was very successful and gavethe participants the confidence to prune trees correctly andrestore their old orchards. In and around theWyre forest thereare nearly 300 remnants of the orchards that once flourished near Bewdley. Now in thelater stages of their lives the orchard trees are a very important habitat for many species. Our courses are helping to restore these orchards to their former glory.”

The courses are funded by by GrowWithWyre and there is a £10 non-refundablebooking fee.

Well, my hopes for a February full of postmen in shorts didn’t happen…..

As I write the barriers are up along Severnside North, and the gales haveblown down our lovely new Bridge poster at Beales Corner. Ah, well, wedo live inWorcestershire, and I hope the sign will soon be up on its feetagain soon. We’re quietly proud of it, and I keep going across to stand andadmire it. February also saw me taking photos of the St Anne’scongregation.

I wasn’t invading their privacy; we have a church photo album containing a photo and a shortpiece explaining the person’s name and something about them. As I walked back home Ithought how handy it would be to have a BewdleyTown equivalent. Then as you said a cheery“Hello” to someone you pass most days you could look in the book and discover that theywere called Colin Firth and lived next door.

Huh, dream on. Incidentally, just because there’s a photo of me at the top of the page, don’tthink you’ll recognise me in the street. That photo is 18 months old and the trials of beingeditor means I’m now so bent and wrinkled I’m unrecognisable.

So I’ll go and have a little nap now before sending this to young David, who is compiling thismonth’s Bridge.

Margaret

The Bridge is the community voice of Bewdley. It is free and delivered by volunteers to more than 4,600 homes every month.

Lent Lunches 2011 – The 7 Deadly Sins

This year on Monday lunchtimes at St Anne’sin Lent, beginning 14th March, we’re lookingat the Seven Deadly Sins. They became a wellknown part of Church’s teaching by theMiddle Ages. They have their roots in the life and work ofa 4th Century monk called Evagrius. Hebelieved that these ‘seven cracks in the heart’could be healed and our life transformedthrough awareness and careful treatment ofthese fractures. Sin has become a ratherabsent item from much of modern churchlife. This Lent we take an extended look atsin, the struggles of being human, and how tolive a more healthy Christ-life life. The sinful line up is Lust, Gluttony, Avarice,Anger, Sloth, Vanity and PrideSign up on the list at the back of St Anne’s tobook your place for a soup lunch and foodfor thought

A Lucky Deadly SinI was in St Anne’s the other day and got into conversationabout the cold weather, and the man I was talking too said thathe didn’t need to wear a hat as his mop of hair kept him warm!He was very proud of having so much hair at his advanced age,but then added that pride was a sin! Well, of course, in theBible there are seven deadly sins and pride is indeed the firstone of them. But I am glad that I suffer from pride or at leastvanity as it may have prolonged my life.

I have always been proud of my upper arms being slim and firm and always woresleeveless dresses. When, in 2003 I discovered a tiny pearly lump on one of them, Ihurried to the doctor to have it removed because it was spoiling my beauty!Neither she nor I thought it was dangerous but it turned out to be a MalignantMelanoma, the deadly form of skin cancer. I had always been a sun worshipper andlaid out in the sun in the hope that my red-haired, white skin would assume somesort of tan, to little avail. This was the result!

I still have slim, firm upper arms, but now there is a 2” circular cavity there fromhaving to have a wide and deep incision done to make sure all the cancer hadbeen removed. Hopefully it was, but no longer do I wear sleeveless dresses!

Now I am like a reformed smoker who tells people of the dangers of smoking, butin my case it is checking that all the people I see sun bathing have on Factor 50!So in the coming months when the sun comes out at last, make sure you takegreat care and slap on the sun cream and wear a hat! Tails of a Veterinary Practice – life atRiverside Vets as seen by Gavin thepractice cat.

This month let me start by sayingthank you to Pauline for her kindletter bringing to my attention thenuisance of seagulls. I have beenpondering the subject in between mynaps. I have not yet arrived at asolution being somewhat of a sedatecat myself, but I will continue to givethe matter some thought in my spare time.On other subjects, I have been most confused thismonth. A number of my humans have been absentfor a week and then returned talking aboutsomething called skiing. I have gathered that this isan activity that some humans like to do wherethey slide about on snow. In my opinion this is notvery clever; as far as I can tell snow is wet, coldand slippery and generally best avoided! However, since they have all returned in one piece and beenvery pleased to see me I have decided not toexpress my displeasure at their absence and theresultant lack of cuddles. I suppose they dodeserve a break sometimes; as long as it doesn’thappen too often.More from me again soon, Gavin

You can help make a difference to Bewdley

Local community groups are being asked to play an active role in our town by nominatingpeople who could join the Bewdley Environment and Town Centre Group. This is a groupwhich has Bewdley at its heart and seeks to:- To promote improvements to and further development of the appearance, functions,

facilities, buildings and amenities including parks and green spaces of Bewdley. To protect and promote its historic character and heritage as a Market Town, and work

towards its future sustainability. To lobby and campaign for improvements and the development of the physical

environment of the town. The group meets bi-monthly and is facilitated by Bewdley Development Trust. The next meeting is on 28th March at 6 pm at Snuff Mill Warehouse, Park Lane, BewdleyDY12 2EL.To find out more or to nominate a representative, please contact Peter Miller on 01299405516 or [email protected]

Bewdley Libary

Who do we think we are? (...and where?) If this caught your attention, chances are you're one of the manypeople who is currently researching (or intending to) their familyhistory. The popularity of the BBC's "Who Do You Think YouAre?" has led to an increase in the number of people curious todiscover their roots. In Bewdley, family and local history

frequently combine into a rich mixture, as many families have been in the town forgenerations.

March is Local and Family History Month at the library, and we are lucky to have thebenefit of local historian Heather Flack's research once again, as she appears at thelibrary on Saturday March 19th at 2 pm to deliver a talk about local people and families, catchily entitled 'Manhunt'. Admission will be by (free) ticket only; contact library stafffor details.

Photograph competition

We will also be running our almost legendary photograph competition again this year -see how many obscure/old photos of the town you can identify. I'm organising this eventthis year, so if you come along and find it too easy or difficult, please remember I've onlylived here for ten years and therefore hardly qualify as local!

Our local history expert

Finally, several of you have already benefited from the advice of our very own familyhistory expert, Lynn Booth. Lynn has a passion for family history and will be arrangingtaster sessions this month to help people get started with this popular and absorbinginterest. Again, pop in and see us if you're interested.

The Green Corner

Save energy and £900 for free!?

First of all humble pie! Gremlins got intothe works last month and there was a slipthat did not get corrected in the articleabout Solar PV panels to generateelectricity.

The Feed in Tariff (FIT) is 41.3 pence perunit generated not 0.413p as printed(although I suppose I could have pretendedthat this meant 0.413 pounds and thatwould have been OK!).

This means that every unit you generate isworth anything from 42.8 pence (in thehighly unlikely event that you do not useany of the electricity yourself) up to 53.8pence per unit if you were to use all of theelectricity being generated (and of courseyou will time your use of electricity to tryand achieve this situation).

All other figures and conclusions werecorrect so the bottom line is that I amfinding that our system is giving about a 9%return on costs (being cautious andpresuming that we use just 50% of whatwe generate ourselves).

Even better, you may qualify for a £1000grant from Wyre Forest District Council, but perhaps not for much longer. Enquirevia the Hub on 01562 732926 (contact at

present isRichardOsborne).

It is at leastworth a phonecall to see if it isstill on offer as£1000 towardsyour costs would make the sums evenmore appealing.

This month’s suggested gadget will costyou nothing, but might save you £900 overits lifetime according to the supplier Eaga.

They claim, “The average family of 4 wouldsave about £30 off their gas bills and over£30 off their water bills (where metered)per year, which could equate to £900 overits lifetime”.

The “Showersmart” is supplied free ofcharge. It is a flow regulator for mixershowers (but not electric ones). It is easilyfitted between the mixer tap and theshower hose and will be useful if yourpresent arrangement results in a fasterflow than necessary.

The free kit includes all you need tomeasure flow rates before and after and isso simple to fit (or remove) that it is wellworth a try; we are pleased with ours sofar. Apply and get further details online atwww.eaga.com/freeshowersmart orenquire via 0191 247 3800 (Switchboard).

Barty and FrazzleFrazzle continues to make good progresswith her training. Fully grown (weighing 30kgs), she enjoys a good walk but because shewill be a working dog her days are varied interms of exercise. Some days she will havean intensive training walk on lead.Appropriate behaviour is reinforced with atreat, inappropriate ignored.

I have to consider the number oftreats she has had and reduceher meal accordingly. It is vital shedoes not become overweight.

Frazzle has unfortunately been illfor a couple of months. Last weekshe was diagnosed with campylobacter whichcauses cramp, abdominal pain andintermittent diarrhoea. She is being treatedwith an antibiotic used to treat humans.

Why am I sharing this with you?

Frazzle could quite possibly have become illas a result of coming into contact withinfected faeces and this could be passed onto humans.

Our town is becoming spoiled by theirresponsible behaviour of dog walkerswho don't bother to clean up aftertheir dogs.

The High Street and Lax Lane seemparticularly bad, much to theannoyance of both residents andvisitors.

Potentially there is a risk to dogs, other animals and more importantly

children. It is time to name and shame. Let'sclean up our streets and eradicate thispotential hazard and unpleasantness.

Full details are available fromEmma Bogaard of WyreCommunity land Trust on 01299488083 ([email protected]).

“These animals graze naturallywith excellent husbandry andstress free conditions, all of whichmakes a major contribution to thequality of the beef” said EmmaBoggard. “We use a local abattoirwhere the beef is hung for 21 daysto give its rich taste and texture. All our beef comes from Dextercattle, which originated from southwest Ireland and are descendedfrom the predominantly blackcattle of the early Celts.

Dexter cattle are renowned fortheir good texture and excellentquality brought upon by marblingof the beef. Marbling is the smallwhite flecks of fat within the meatmuscle. The greater amount ofmarbling in beef, the higher thegrade because marbling makesbeef more tender, flavourful andjuicy.

The chapel in the woodsfeatured in a nationwidetour of Tin Tabernacles byfolk duo Trevor Moss andHannah Lou supported byguitar players PepeDelmonte and PeteGreenwood.

The idea for a tour of Tin Tabernacles came fromTrevor Moss and Hannah Lou following asuccessful previous tour of village halls. Thehusband and wife songwriting partnership startedafter they met in Goldsmith's College, London.

The church was a fantastic venue to listen toaccomplished music playing from a band to watchfor in the future. With over 60 people packedinto the small venue it made for a greatatmosphere.

Bus Stop BuzzA. Look at that chap feeding the seagulls. One pecked the bread right out ofhis hand! B. They’re getting too bold these days. Just like the pigeons. Making ourbuildings all messy. A. Y’ know; having to wait here for the bus has made me look more closelyat the birds. B: ‘Know what y’mean. Have you noticed that odd looking duck? There he is.He’s just dived under. That can’t be a mallard; they don’t dive. A: That’s a goosander. It has a little hooked beak, and different shaped headto a mallard. A: How do you know all this? B: Well, it’s like I said; having time to wait for the bus makes you more awareof your surroundings. Take for instance those ‘seagulls’ you mentionedearlier. They are black headed gulls. A: But they haven’t got black heads! B: That’s because they are in their winter colours. A: Then what about that pigeon. He’s different to all the rest. B: That’s a collared dove. Can you see that dark brown ring round the backof his neck? That bird was first seen in this country in the 1950s; now youoften see them in pairs in your garden. I think they look more elegant thanyour common pigeon.A: This will get you! That one with all the bright colours.B: That beauty ‘s a mandarin duck. Although we can see only one from here, there are literally, over a hundred up-river, by Dowles. Came from China originally. And funnily enough, likes to build its nest in holes in trees.A: Don’t think of ducks doing that, do you. Ey’up, here’s the 292. Bet you don’t know whatthat bird is. B: Where? A: That one …… high up in the sky. See yuh.

Winter TrainingAs the river levels go up and down like theproverbial yo-yo, and high winds also make rowingdifficult, winter training in the gym features moreoften than some of us would like!

It is clearly so important to keep up levels of fitnessand stamina, but when faced with a run round ‘The Triangle’ (along the KidderminsterRoad to the roundabout, turn right along the by-pass and then back to the rowing clubalong the Stourport Road) or a 5km ergo session, enthusiasm can be in short supply. Sowhen you see red-faced runners as you walk around town, do give us a smile ofencouragement!

But now that the evenings are discernably lighter, crews are beginning to row in the lateafternoons, and that means that Spring is not too far away!

On Friday 21st January, St Anne’sPrimary School held their WinterFayre. Rescheduled because of badweather conditions before Christmas,it was lacking the lure of Santa’s grottobut the St Anne’s Got Talentcompetition seemed to pull thecrowds.Pupils had already been through angruelling audition process withBewdley’s own versions of theglamorous panel, Kate Adams, AlisonSpall and Claire Broadhurst (cast themas you will) selecting the twelvefinalists. For the final we had Bewdley’s answerto Simon Cowell, our editor, joining thejudges and Alison stepping down withSimon Tapp doing a fine job as both Antand Dec.And what an array of talent! We had two solo performers from YearOne who treated us to a song, twoacts showing us their “smooth” MichaelJackson moves, a poetry recital, acheeky chappy doing a spot of stand up,an impressive Tae Kwon Dodemonstration, some very popular Irishdancing, three fabulous dance acts, oneof them on stilts and finally ourdeserving winner, James Bastable withhis singing and dancing rendition of“Consider Yourself” from Oliver. The event was a big hit (sadly with noRoyal Variety Performance for James)with St Anne’s pupils demonstratingthat they have lots of talent.Julia Ertas

I’m still here, for the moment, and the sameis true of your forests.

There are proposals for big changes inwho manages the public forests and Iurge you to voice your opinions onlineat www.forestry.gov.uk/england-pfeconsultation .

There will also be an information eveningon 12th March at the CommunityDiscovery Centre – details to beannounced.

In the Wyre Forest we can be proud of ourtrack record. Originally set up to provide astrategic timber supply for the nation, theForestry Commission has evolved to do somuch more in response to the concerns ofthe day. Positive management actions havebeen taken to help threatened wildlife suchas the Wood White Butterfly, bats, Dormice,Great Crested Newts and Adders.

Facilities are created and maintained forwalkers, riders and cyclists with much timebeing spent in consultation meetings.

Income from timber salesis maximised while stillensuring that the forest isa sustainable resource, with income from carparks and permits helpingto reduce the cost to theTreasury. About 10,000people enjoy oureducation activitiesannually, and if you would

love to explore the forest but don’t knowquite how to start then the ForestryCommission has several regular eventswhich will help you to do just that.

This month the buds are bursting and theactivity of all the forest wildlife goes up anotch. Hawthorn leaves are often the firstto appear, followed by hazel, rowan, elderand bright green larch needles. Hazel and

birch catkins will be dying and falling off thetrees but you can still look out for “pussywillow” and, towards the end of the month, blackthorn providing the first of the whitespring blossoms.

I love to collect a few of the twigs and bringthem indoors. The warmth will encouragethe buds to open and the new leaves andflowers will encourage me that spring is onthe way!

Our regular Health Walks continue tomeet at the Visitor Centre at 10.30am onTuesdays or Sundays to register before the11am walk. These walks are led byvolunteers and there is no charge. ForestFriends meet at 10am each Thursday foran hour of forest activities for pre-schoolchildren and their carers. This is led by theDiscovery Centre team who have a wealthof ideas to help little ones have fun in thenatural world. There is a charge of £2 perchild.

On 2nd April there is an opportunity forgardeners to learn how to make their ownPlant Supports, just in time for thegrowing season. The materials are locally-grown hazel and willow and youwill be using them to producea wigwam or fan. The courseruns from 2pm to 5pm, costs£18 and must be pre-bookedon (01299) 266929
