Operation Christmas ChildWhy not make a child in a developingcountry happy this Christmas byfilling a shoebox!

It is so simple and costs little to make a child ina poor country happy this Christmas. All youhave to do is pick up a leaflet (available from anumber of churches including St.Anne’s andBewdley Baptist Church). Then decide whetherthe box is for a girl or a boy and fill withappropriate gifts. The leaflets contain lots andlots of ideas for different age groups.

Once completed drop your shoebox into the church together with £2.50 to covertransporting costs no later than 20th November.

Why not spare a few minutes and see how you can make a real difference to a child bywatching the video at:-

www.operationchristmaschild.org.uk

2nd BEWDLEY BROWNIESDuring the winter term wewill be working towards our

‘Environment badge’.We have already looked at recyclableand non-recyclable products and how far some of ourfood travels to reach us. As well as looking at what werecycle at home we are also collecting plastic bottle topsand batteries at Brownies.

We have also found out about four endangered speciesand met Pippin, a guide dog in training and her puppywalker, GabiWootton. At our next meeting we will behaving a fashion show, where we will be modelling outfitsmade from recyclable items.

On the 6th October at our weekly meeting we had a rainforest animal encounter. PaulCarpenter from Life in the Rainforest gave us a very interesting and informative talk aboutsome of the animals that can be found starting on the rainforest floor amongst the leaflitter before moving up in to the trees.

We met a corn snake, praying mantis, stick insects, a millipede, a frog and some of usbravely stroked a tarantula. This was great fun, especially when the frog escaped and Paulhad to catch it!

Hope you like the photograph! Gill Robinson

Editorial News

This month I am following up on my resolution to talk to more people. Ithas turned out to be a great idea. In my solitary walks in thecountryside round here I have met and talked to all sorts of interestingpeople. Farmers, horse riders, gardeners, everyone has had time for a fewwords. Even better, I have been, like Autolycus in AWinter’s Tale, "asnapper-up of unconsidered trifles".

Here are some country trifles I have snapped up: If you have a reactor, that is, a cow that has tested positive forT.B. , the whole herd has to benegative for 60 days before you can move any of them: prices for oats locally are really goodat the moment; there’s a sort of sheep called a BalwenWelsh which has white socks andhorns and is very hardy.

Mind you, over the course of the Festival last month we all learned some pretty interestingtrifles. From honorary local, Francis BrettYoung, to really local Max Keen and Richard Perrinthere was plenty to raise our eyebrows and say,“I never knew that!”. It was also good to seethe town looking so busy and full of colour; Gary was there as usual to record the scene.Gary has a new rival in the shape of another talented Bewdley School student; JoeTurner willbe sending us photos as part of his coursework at the school. Here at the Bridgeheadquarters (All right, my little boxroom) we are welcoming the fresh perspective of thenext generation in the shape of Joe and Chris, whose latest article should make us think.

By now many of you will have received the Bridge calendars you ordered. They are stillavailable at BewdleyTourist Information Centre. St Anne’s ,All Saint’s and Bewdley BaptistChurches. So grab them quick before they all go!!

Autumn at The Hop Poleallotment and some recipe ideas The bounty of the summer cropping has been in gentledecline for several weeks now although the greenhouse andoutdoor tumbler tomatoes have continued to cropprolifically.

By now, many gardeners will be wondering what else can be done with green tomatoes, apartfrom making the usual green tomato chutney. Well, we are all familiar with the concept ofcarrot cake, and some of you may also have made cakes using grated courgettes, but you caneasily substitute finely chopped green tomatoes for the carrot or courgette in your usualrecipe. There's no need to skin the tomatoes so there is not a lot of work involved and theresulting cake will be moist and delicious; no-one will guess that there are tomatoes in there!

This is the last report from the allotment for this year. Leeks have been planted for thewinter and green manure will be sown on the remaining open ground for overwintering anddigging in at the start of next spring. Thanks to all of you who have shown an interest in thegardening and livestock at the Hop Pole; it's been good to get your feedback. Happygardening and cooking.

Traidcraft Christmas Fair

St Anne’s Church

Saturday, 5th November 10am-4pm

Shhh!....whisper it very quietly. It’s that time of year – Christmas is fast approaching! Nodoubt you feel bombarded already by special displays in shops and supermarkets and hugehoardings encouraging you to book your Christmas lunch at various hostelries.

So for a gentler approach to Christmas, why not make sure you come to the TraidcraftChristmas Fair at St Anne’s Church, Bewdley on Saturday, 5th November, between 10am and4pm. We’ll have a great range of fairly traded products from across the developing world, en-abling you to buy distinctive gifts for your family and friends and to stock up on Christmastreats as well as every day items.

There will be samples of the clothing range from the current catalogue and lots of bargainswith reduced priced crafts, jewellery, clothes, children’s toys etc as well a very good selectionfrom the new catalogue.

In these difficult economic times your support is more vital than ever, as it’s the poorest peo-ple of the world who are suffering most. As our Chief Executive, Paul Chandler says, “Loyalcustomers supporting the Traidcraft brand…..are the bedrock of our ability to bring hopeand opportunity to hundreds of thousands of our partners and their families around theworld. Working in partnership with each other across the globe, we can make a differenceand build a better world.”

So I look forward to seeing you on the 5th November, when we’ll have Fairtrade tea and cof-fee to refresh you, as well as home baking and lunches, so you can have a relaxed shoppingexperience, while knowing that every purchase really does make a difference.

The only way is BewdleyI’m sure everybody by now knows of the ITV borderline reality show, “The only way isEssex”. Pop culture at its peak, the only way is Essex follows the lives of pure born Essexgirls and gals, and the stereotypical traits which come with them.

This got me thinking… what would “The only way is Bewdley” be like? Would it be thelocal moaning critics, the rowdy Friday night pub crawlers or the lost souled teenagersthat would be featured?

Thankfully, I don’t think so. In times where the economy is down and people power islower than ever before, does Bewdley still buck the trend? According to statistics, I’mproud to say we do. Well above average GCSE & A Level results, below average crimefigures and a town reputation to be proud of, “the only way is Bewdley” would reflect thehard working, relaxed, picturesque community we enjoy.

Despite the struggle of many communities nationally, the only way for Bewdley is up.

Souper Success at Bewdley Harvest FairOver 600 portions of delicious home-made soup weresupped at the Bewdley Harvest Soup Trail on Saturday,1st October. Glorious weather didn’t stop peoplequeuing up to sample and judge the creations by chefsfrom The Bailiff ’s House, The Food Foundry,Grannystap Victorian Tea Room, The Hop Pole, TheLittle Pack Horse and the Mug House.

Each competitor had to create a soup using localproduce, much of it grown in Bewdley gardens or local farms. The event, part of a series overthe Harvest Fair weekend, was designed to promote local produce and local food outlets.Neville Farmer said they were overwhelmed by the success of the day. “It was a real Bewdleyevent,” said Chris Griffin. “Even the trophy was a collaboration of the Bewdley museumartisans, Chris Connor and Eric Lyons with engraving from the Bewdley Cobbler.”

The public voting was very close but The Mug House’s “Spiced Beetroot and Apple Soup withApple Chips and Beetroot Crisps” was declared the winner by the Mayor of Bewdley, JanAdams (pictured above). The Mug House chefs, Pavol Kocis, Mark Rhoden and Lewis Stanleyhad even churned their own butter from local cream and customers from the pub hadhelped with the supply of vegetables. The competitors’ recipes will be put up onto theBewdley Development Trust website in the next few days.

The St Anne’s PIG

Following the very successful Year 3/4World War II project, which involvedhatching some chickens and growing somefine vegetables, you might be forgiven forwondering whether the PIG is part of thenew and improved 2011/12 project.

However, the PIG in question is the newlyformed Playground Improvement Group atSt Anne’s CE Primary School.

The group is made up of a small andextremely dedicated team of parents, whohave already given up a huge amount oftheir time to transform the drab and drearyoutside areas of the school and turn theminto colourful and attractive spaces in whichthe children can play.

After an inspirational win in the Bewdley inBloom competition in which the groundswere described as “newly turbocharged bysome enthusiastic mums”, the PIG are notrested on their well tended laurels. Theirnext plan is a fundraising project to lowerthe monkey bars on the climbing frame

The children are thrilled with the revamp.Over the summer the new beds lookedfabulous with the recently added plants andthe work around the slope leading up tothe main entrance has altered the previous

ugly bald patch into a lovely terraced area.

The sheds have been painted with flowersin bright colours and the woodenstructures have gone from brown to fulltechnicolour. The children are thrilled withthe work but there is still more to be doneand the improvements need to bemaintained.

Volunteers are always needed and anydonations of plants or supplies gratefullyreceived (call 07976008306 if youwould like to help in any way).

The PIG are planning a greenhouse for theschool to be constructed using 2 litreplastic drinks bottles so please allow themto recycle them for you.

On behalf of the parents and children at StAnne’s, we would like to say a huge thankyou to the people who have helped withthe project. Your time and dedication aremuch appreciated.

Tails of a VeterinaryPractice – life at RiversideVets as seen by Gavin the

practice cat.

It looks like and exciting monthahead. One of my humans gave

birth to a human kitten (I think humans callthem babies ) at the end of September. All ofthe other humans are very excited aboutmeeting the new baby boy and are wishingMum well. I am missing her as she works inthe office a lot and I now have to do withoutcompany when I take my snooze.Back in October, I asked my humans to lookahead to this month and start preparing sothat I can get through the season offireworks without getting distressed. I mustadmit I am not at all fond of the loud bangs.Thankfully, I have my humans very welltrained and they know that it is most helpfulto start preparing in advance. Don’t worrythough, there are things you can do to helpyour pet even close to the time of fireworks.

My humans always make sure that thecurtains are drawn tight so that I can’t besurprised by any flashes of light. It also helpsto leave a radio or television on to masksome of the noise of the fireworks. I have afeliway diffuser that is plugged in fromSeptember which releases calmingpheromones into my room (you can use DAPdiffusers for the same purpose if you have adog). It also helps your pet if you provide safehidey places for them during the fireworkperiod. If your pet chooses to use their hideyit is important to allow them to do thiswithout interaction from you. Fussing themor talking to them can reinforce thatfireworks are something to be afraid of. Ifyou just allow your pet to hide and then goon about your normal routines then it helpsyour pet to realise that they need not bescared but allows them to follow theirnatural instinct of they do becomefrightened.Gavin.

Women at the crossroadsWhen the big upheavals come in life it’s good to know that thereis someone to turn to for advice and direction. The crunch pointis not always huge and it’s not always bad, but we Christiansbelieve that our Father God wants to be involved with everyaspect of our lives and involve us in the building of His Kingdom.

This is the theme of Bewdley Baptist Church’s Women’s Dayon Saturday November 19th – “Moving forward: finding God’spathway for your life”.

During the day, which starts at 9.30am and finishes at 4.30pm,there will be interactive sessions led by Rosalyn Derges of

Inspired Women’s Ministries, exploring prayer and other ways of hearing from God.

There will also be worship, time to chat and sharing of Communion. Refreshments areprovided but delegates are asked to bring their own picnic lunch. There is no charge forthe day but there will be opportunity to make a donation to cover costs.

If you are interested please contact Mary Farmer at the church on 01299 403267,leaving a message if necessary. Bookings should be made before November 13th. Wehope to see you there!

It is autumn well and truly now. This is thetime to enjoy a brisk walk, making the mostof the longer views that have opened up inthe forest with the loss of the foliage.

Perhaps you will be rewarded with a sightingof fallow deer as they search for acorns andbeech mast to feed on. Frosty or mistymornings have their ownatmosphere, with sparklingice crystals fringing eachstem or dewy cobwebsdelicately draping fences, branches and ground. Whynot join one of theHealth Walks everyTuesday and Sundaystarting from the Visitor Centre at 11am?They are free and their aim is to build fitnessat a gentle pace.

If you haven’t been before come at 10.30amto allow time to register with the volunteer

leader. Pre-school children and their carerscan meet every term-time Thursday from10am to 11am for forest-based play andactivities with Forest Friends, led by theDiscovery Centre’s staff.

I hope that you have been able to see theDiscovery Centre during the last year, either

with a school, leisure group orat one of our special publicevents.

The last of the specially-commissioned interpretativeartworks is now in place in oraround the building, enablingpeople to engage with theforest, its wildlife, history and

geology in all sorts of imaginative ways. These were all made by artists in the regionand were funded by Biffa and HeritageLottery Fund.

Endangered species in the Wyre ForestSadly the future of the CommunityDiscovery Centre and everything thatgoes on there is in question.

The Forestry Commission is havingits budget cut by 25% and theproposal on the table cuts all but oneof the Wyre education staff.

This would leave one “Learning Co-ordinator” to “facilitate” education ina new district reaching fromShrewsbury to Cornwall.

The delivery of education as we know it (and as valued by visiting teachers for nearly 20years) would be lost.

We are fighting, and there may still be hope. If you want to let mehave your views please email me at [email protected] .

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3RD OCTOBER 2011

Wribbenhall Millennium Green

It was agreed to fix the Annual General Meeting of the Millennium Green Trust for Tuesday15th November at 6.00pm at the Shaw Hedge Road Community Centre.

Civic Awards

Just a reminder that 30th November is the closing date for anyone to nominate a worthyindividual for a Civic Award. The scheme which has been in place for over ten years is toreward people with the honour (and a medal) who has given outstanding service to the localcommunity in Bewdley/Wribbenhall.

Householders’ Boundary Hedges

Now we are well into autumn the Town Council would ask where possible that for anyonewho has a property with bushes or hedges which have grown up over the summer, and nowoverhang or interfere with footpaths and passageways, to give them a trim so pedestrians canwalk past safely.

20 mph Speed Limit

The Mayor had received a letter form the County Council’s Director of EnvironmentalServices (Highways Chief) rejecting many of the arguments in favour of an immediateintroduction of a 20mph speed limit in the town centre including High Street where it wassaid “the reality is that no casualty improvements are likely to be achieved by theintroduction of a 20mph limit along this road where speeds are already low.” The TownCouncil will continue to lobby for the limit.

Christmas Lights

Following on from the purchase last year of some new “feature” lights, Councillors agreed tosome further updating of the timing and switching equipment and to look at furtherimprovements to the lights themselves including those on the Christmas tree as part of nextyear’s budget

St Anne’s Church Clock

Those of you who noticed that the church clock had stopped at 12 o’clock for rather a longtime should know it was because the entire mechanism had been sent away for upgrading. Itshould now be back in place.

Many people chatted to me aboutGuide Dogs in October and I havebeen able to send a cheque fromthe people of Bewdley to support

their work in the future.

I had a phone call from Gill who owns Arty.He continues work hard; there have beensome 'ups and downs', but she is supportedby her trainer based in Southampton. Havinghad three dogs before Arty, she is verypatient and knows that like us, dogs can beless inclined to work some days!

Sadly, Frazzle has been withdrawn from thetraining programme. She became verystressed if paving slabs, drain covers wobbledand despite being taken back to basics theproblem has continued. She may have

'pinched' the pad of her paw, which wouldhave been very painful. Her trainer is awareof her qualities and it is still hoped that shewill become a working dog in another guise.Whatever her futureshe will certainly enrichthe lives of those she shares.

Pippin is nearly 6 months and well into hertraining. She is confident and has to be'handled' firmly! She enjoys attending theclasses run by Guide Dogs, in Kidderminster. She has built a strong bond with Sophie, across labrador/retriever, who was Frazzle'sbest friend

Many thanks for your continued support.Other puppy-walkers are amazed whatcelebrities all the dogs have become!

Fancy going to Laos?Anyone who has had even a passing conversation with the Griffinsin the past couple of weeks cannot have avoided hearing about ourbrilliant holiday in Laos. We fell in love with the places we saw, thekind and friendly people we met, and the laidback “Laos way”, andhave been talking about it at length ever since. We would not havehad such a brilliant time getting to know Laos without our travelagent, Tavanh.

As usual, we made our own travel arrangements to get to Laos, and looked on the internetfor a local travel agent to organise the trip within the country. We’re not sure why we choseTavanh Travel, but we were so glad we did. Although we only paid a small deposit in advance,Tavanh planned everything for us, booking hotelsand transport, arranging guides and makingeverything run smoothly.

For example, when we arrived in Laos with aridiculously short amount of time to catch ourfirst internal flight, Tavanh’s rep was waiting withour visa forms already completed so we could beat the head of the queue. And when our journeyto the Plain of Jars (where the damage done toLaos by US forces in the Vietnam War is mostevident) was disrupted because of mud slides, she tried every option to get us there and thenmade alternative arrangements when even shehad to give up.

We met Tavanh when we went to her office to pay the balance of the cost. From the emailsit was hard to predict what she would be like, but even so we were surprised to find abeautiful young woman with just a hint of an Australian accent who had made quite a longjourney herself in creating her company.

Every year, the Australian government helps Laos by providing 20 scholarships for Laostudents to study in Australia. Tavanh was one of the lucky recipients and was awarded adiploma in Tourism Management, inspired by her father who had worked in tourism. Shereturned to Laos and set up Tavanh Travel Service – helpfully tavanh means the sun in Lao.The company has been operating for almost 10 years now and serves guests from all overthe world, particularly Canada, USA, Australia, New Zealand and the UK. It is a small businessand is privately and locally owned, unlike many others where the profits don’t stay in Laos. Itoffers mostly tailor-made tour programs in every part of Laos including activities such astrekking, elephant riding, cooking, Mekong river cruises and meeting Laos people throughvisiting hill tribes and home-stays. It also makes arrangements for school groups coming toLaos in exchange with local students.

If you ever think of visiting Laos, contact Tavanh [email protected] or her website: www.explorelao.com
