Gardening for June

If May turns out to be as dry as April, we will need to consider water conservation nextmonth, but in the meantime here is yet another list of jobs to keep at through June.

For your borders, it’s time to plant out hardened off annuals, deadheading to encouragemore flowers, with sweet peas regular cutting has the same effect. It’s also time to dig upbulbs after their foliage has died down and start to plant out autumn flowering varieties.Keep weeds under control by continuing with hoeing.

As ever lawns need cutting, moss and thatch raking out and if looking sad feeding with a ni-trogen rich dressing. Pruning and trimming keeps new shoots under control and helps toshape hedges and shrubs. If you have fruit in the garden propagate strawberries fromrunners, thin out apple, pear and plum to produce fewer but larger fruits, keep well wa-tered while the fruit is forming. Ponds, remove as far as possible blanket weed, plant outnew water lilies, review fish levels and re-stock. Vegetables, time to plant out just abouteverything, feed, water, pest control, stake where necessary and in some casesharvest the early crops. Stuart Williams

VIEW FROM THE REDTHORNE - May reportDuring the Discover Bewdley weekend, it was my honour to host the first ever BewdleySalad Challenge. The unusual yet hugely successful concept was suggested by Phil Brookfrom the Deli@Bewdley and was co-sponsored by him andTonyThompson at the FarmShop on Dog Lane. It was organised by Phil andTony, Chris Griffin of Discover Bewdley,Peter Miller of the Bewdley DevelopmentTrust and myself. I spent three hours that morn-ing scraping and steaming dozens of Jersey Royal potatoes, crisping bacon and blanchingbeans, asparagus, purple sprouting broccoli and peas. And why?

Well, at three pm on a sunny but windy bank holiday, Mark Flello of GrannystapTea Room,Matt Knott of The Bailiffs House, Zac Birchley of The Angry Chef restaurant at the MugHouse and Emma Passey of the Hop Pole demonstrated their salad inventing skills infront of a large crowd of Bewdley visitors. They had just two minutes to choose their in-gredients from a great display provided by the Farm Shop andThe Deli. Then, in a 15minute race, the four superb chefs demonstrated just how good food can be in Bewdley. The event judge, Mark Garnier MP was suitably impressed, as were the many people whotried the results. Plenty of local ingredients were used including home smoked local duck, reductions of local rhubarb and apple juice from Son and Styles, asparagus and tomatoesfromWhitley and Bewdley Blue from Lightwood Cheeses.

All four chefs showed extraordinary innovation and taste, and the winning salad, using achicken and pork terrine, chive flowers, local asparagus and red onions is already availableon the menu at the Hop Pole. Congratulations to Emma Passey of the Hop Pole and to allthe chefs who competed.

I’m hoping that all these recipes will find their way onto the menus of these restaurantsand that next year’s challenge will have even more contestants. I suspect that this may bethe only event of its kind in the world and Bewdley should be proud of it.

Bewdley has shown itself off to great advantage recently. Our DiscoverBewdley bank holiday weekend last month was blessed with wonderfulweather and the streets were humming with people from all over theWest Midlands, not to mention our guests from the twin town ofVellmar. Some were snakes and laddering round the town, some were being moredecorously guided on tours of our ancient past, plenty were justmooching. Of course the riverside was being well patronised by peopletrying out Italian delicacies, original salads or just good old fish and chips and ice cream, andin Jubilee Park half the town sprawled on blankets to drink champagne – or less classybeverages – and listen to our super newTown Band. So thanks to Catherine andWilliam forthe extra day, and I hope you enjoy Gary’s great photos.

Oh, and you know that thing where I come up to you and you fail to see me in time so I cangrab you to ask you to write something for the magazine? Well, I hope you enjoy trying tospot the hapless victims and their delightful articles in this month’s Bridge. And as there’s alot going on this month too, I am donning a false moustache to leap out at you ready for nextmonth. Don’t say you weren’t warned! Margaret

Donn doing something well, really clever

but we are recommended not to try this if we are over the age of 30!

Land ClubsRecently, the Civic Society had a very interesting talk on"Land Clubs" in Kidderminster. The next day, I discoveredwe'd had one here.

A land club was formed, usually, by two or three menwho'd bought a piece of land and laid it out as buildingplots. A club was formed with the number of members

matching the number of plots. They often met at a pub and paid ten shillings a month untilthey'd paid for their plot. What and when they built was up to the buyer. The aim of such aclub was to give ordinary people the opportunity of being owner-occupiers, an aim not always achieved.

The Wribbenhall Land Society was formed in 1900 after Thomas Joseph Bullus, Henry Edward Usher Watkins, John Fehrenbach and George Augustus Weston bought the land by All Saints' Church. Plots fronted Spencer Avenue and what would later be called WheatcroftAvenue. Also included was the land on which 72-92 Kidderminster Road now stand. Theoriginal purchasers included a carpenter, a postman, a grocer and a wool sorter. Some of theearliest properties built are almost certainly on plots purchased by builders. Some of the lastproperties built are probably on plots used as an investment, not as a means of getting ahome of your own.

The information I have at present is a bit patchy and I would love to fill in the gaps, so if anyone can help me, please get in touch - tel:400691.

Not Quite TelfordAs a member of Wyre Forest Lace Makers (3rd Tuesday in the month @ Lickhill Community Centre 7.30 to 9.30), we arecreating a canal scene in Bobbin Lace.

I was asked to create the bridge. I left with a piece of paper as big as the canal! How to begin, what materials? I start with a prototype cut to size. I sew it together, transfer it to graph paper, work out the stitch pattern.

Now to begin. The job needs large bobbins to hold the threadwhich I make from my old bed headboard on a lathe. Armed and ready, I lace the bridge.Pieces all made, now to erect the bridge. I paint, wire, stitch and stick .

At last! The bridge is standing! A little slower than Thomas Telford, but it’s my bridge. Yes,The bridge has landed!

2011 Pub and Club RegattaFor several weeks now the river has been alive with beautifully maintained wooden boats asoptimistic and enthusiastic crews learn or revise the art of rowing. Teams from the town’sbars, sporting and social clubs have grouped together in fours…..men, ladies or mixed, with aview to winning the annual race; this year to take place on Saturday June 4th. There are32 men’s and 32 ladies’ crews, and 16 mixed, making a grand total of 80 hopeful boats on theday. Some crews have started from scratch, and some have been pipped at the post beforeand come back to try again. Either way, the emphasis is on FUN, and the aim is that a goodday will be had by all.

Do come and support the people you know who are rowing. I believe everyone in townmust know at least one person in a boat, so raise a glass (Rowing Club bar prices are attractively low!) to the success of their crew. Melanie Gunn

The Green CornerA Lawn or Something Better?

If you are in charge of a bowling green or a cricket square, turn over or I shall upset you! However, if you do battle with the average patch of weedsand grass, have you considered relaxing your mowing regime to allow part or all of it to become a wildflower haven? It will look good, provide food

and shelter for wildlife and should save you money, time and energy.

If you take a wildflower meadow and start mowing it as if it were a lawn, then in a season ortwo it will turn into a boring, passable lawn. Please do not try this!

Conversely, take a lawn, adopt the right mowing regime and this alone could be enough togive you a beautiful and valuable wildflower mini-meadow after a season or two. A commonsuggestion is to mow in just March and late July. However you could vary this to encouragedifferent species (e.g. delaying the second cut until after later species have set seeds, e.g. September). Do not use any chemicals: fertiliser is not wanted and you will now have wildflowers, not weeds.

Objections follow:

Q Won’t long matted grass just looks a mess and become impossible to mow?A Only if you leave your cutting longer than suggested (and do try not to leave old bikes etcin it!)

Q Won’t it just look as if I am lazy?A Show that it is intentional by mowing path(s) or perimeter strip(s) to keep it looking tidy.

Q Where will the wildflowers come from?A If you are worried that natural seeding etc will take too long, give nature a hand by spotplanting plugs or scattering seed but do not take plants from the wild of course.

Q Does it work?A Some favourite spots in our garden: a shady corner now has wood anemone, stitchwortand red campion every spring, an awkward bank has bobbing snakeshead fritillaries and ourbluebells fight it out with cowslips. There is still room for football, but foxes or pheasants arenot guaranteed.

Most people hate wasps. While it isn’t surprising, it isn’t really fair either. ChrisPackham (of “The Really Wild Show”,“Springwatch” and other TV wildlife programmes) has championed the wasp, pointing out their beneficial qualities. Theyare carnivorous, although the adults like nectar and fruit, and so help to control pests in the garden. The social wasps buildbeautiful “paper” nests with delicate colourbanding out of chewed up wood pulp. Theynever swarm but at the end of the summerthe colonies begin to break up and the adultwasps can then be a nuisance with their liking for our picnics. However, the arrival ofcold weather kills off all but the matedqueens, which will hibernate until the spring.

Norman Hickin in “The Natural History ofan English Forest” drew attention to a fascinating relationship between wasps andthe figwort plant, which is common in theforest’s hedgerows. Their flowers are purplish-brown and are shaped to receivethe wasps’ mouthparts, which aren’t adaptedto gathering nectar from most flowers. When wasps feed on the nectar, they fertilisethe flowers in the process and because oftheir “special relationship” are almost exclusively responsible for figwort

pollination.

There are 27 species of “true wasps” inBritain, 40 species of spider-hunting wasps, and 230 other “digger wasps”. Their distantrelatives, the wood wasps, are often seen inthe Wyre Forest. Impressive and even scary-looking, they are 4cm or more inlength with a long ovipositor on their tailswhich could be mistaken for a sting but is actually used to lay eggs in wood.

When not dodging the wasps you may like tojoin some of the events at the Wyre ForestDiscovery Centre at Callow Hill, BewdleyDY14 9XQ.

BEWDLEY TOWN COUNCIL ANNUAL REPORT 2010/11The Town Council1 Bewdley Town Council was created in 1974 following the reorganisation of localgovernment in England & Wales before which it had been a Borough withinWorcestershire. It now forms part of Wyre Forest District Council which is one ofsix District Councils within Worcestershire.

2 Bewdley Town Council has 13 Town Councillors all of whom are elected for a termof four years. The Town Council Elections took place on 27th May (delayed bythree weeks because of the General Election) and hence this report covers thefirst year of that Council.

3 For voting purposes, Bewdley is divided into three Wards which are Bewdley West(four Councillors) and Bewdley East (4 Councillors) on the west side of the riverand Wribbenhall (5 Councillors) on the east side.

4. As a result of the 2010 Elections, five new Councillors were elected to the Council. These were Cllr Mrs Carol Gittins who has previously served as a Town Councillorand been Mayor (2001/02) and Cllrs Mrs Linda Candlin, Mrs Anne Cox, Mrs JennyGreener and Mr John Latham.

5. Officially the Town Council year began its work on 4th June with the Annual Meeting of the Town Council. This is also known as “Mayor-Making” when theTown Councillors elect a Mayor, a Deputy, the Town Council’s Committees andAdvisory Groups, and representatives to outside bodies. During this last year theMayor has been Cllr Paul Gittins and the Deputy Mayor has been Cllr Mrs LizDavies.

6. On 1st February, Cllr Stephen Clee resigned from the Town Council which necessitated a by-election which was held on 5th May being the same date as theDistrict Council Elections.

7. The names and contact details of all the Town Councillors can be obtained fromthe Town Clerk’s Office or from the website www.bewdley.org.uk

8. The Town Council and Planning Committees meet once a month. They generallydo so on the first Monday of each month unless that happens to be a BankHoliday in which case they take place a day later.

9. The attendance record for the 12 meetings of the Town Councillors is set outbelow

Allthree are part time employees. The payroll function for the Council is carried outby the District Council. None of the positions are pensionable.

Civic Matters13.Civic Ceremonies involving the Town Council comprise: St. George’s Day Parade inApril, Annual Meeting of the Town Council (Mayor-Making) in May, Mayor’s Sundayin June, Bewdley Festival Service in October and two Remembrance Services inNovember with a morning service at St. Anne’s and an afternoon service at AllSaints.

14.The Mayor undertook a full and extensive programme of engagements during theyear.

Bewdley Town Council ANNUAL REPORT

Page 32: The Bridge - June 2011

15.Amongst its most treasured and valuable possessions are the Town Council’s twomaces. They are now 300 years old and are held on important civic occasions bytwo of the Council’s Macebearers standing immediately next to the Mayor

16. In September the Mayor’s Parlour and Guildhall were once again opened to the public for Heritage Open Day with several Town Councillors taking part.

Civic Awards17.It has become a tradition in Bewdley for the Town Council to organise the “civicawards” and they have now done so since 2000. Nominations for awards areinvited during the autumn from which the winners are selected by the CivicAwards Panel. This year there were four successful nominations who acceptedtheir silver engraved medals and certificates at a ceremony on 4th March. Theywere husband and wife team Robert and Alison Williams who were recognised fortheir work with the Scouts & Guides, John Genner for his work with the Red Crossand Stella Baldwin also for her work with the Red Cross and also with NHSpatients groups.

Town Maintenance18.The Town Council pays for the servicing of the Town Clock on St. Anne’s ChurchTower.

19.The Town Council owns nine bus shelters. All these bus shelters have been provided from funds of Worcestershire County Council but are maintained and kept in repair by the Town Council.

20.The Town Council at present owns and maintains some 41 seats and benches situated in the town, a significant number of which have been donated in memoryof people for whom Bewdley was a special place.

21.The Town Council owns and maintains 7 lifebelts on Severnside North, SevernsideSouth and in Wribbenhall which are checked on a regular basis. Last summerregrettably there was evidence of wanton misuse of three of the lifebelts bythrowing them into the river. Two were not recovered so had to be replaced at acost to the taxpayer.

22.The Town Council owns and maintains 10 street poles in Load Street which areused for Christmas Lights, bunting for the Carnival and Festival and for hangingbaskets. It is unfortunate that from time to time these are damaged by vehicleswhich then necessitates repair.

23.The Town Council manages the events notice board on Beale’s Corner and all organisations in the town are able to advertise on this, subject to liaising with theTown Clerk as to a suitable slot in the diary being available. Due to high demand,it is necessary to limit advertising to a period of one week per event. to run fromSunday to Saturday. Any adverts must also comply with the requirement that theyare not too wordy as to cause a distraction for motorists

24.The Town Council has continued to pay the running costs and maintenance of the Wyre Hill Play Area which costs in excess of £4,000 per annum.

Bewdley Town Council ANNUAL REPORT

Page 33: The Bridge - June 2011

25.The condition of Bewdley’s rural footpaths is monitored by the two Footpath Wardens.

26.The condition of Bewdley’s trees is monitored by the two Tree Wardens appointedby the Town Council who regularly comment on planning applications for work tobe done on trees in the Town.

27. The Town Council continues to engage Mr Bob Carlyle to act as its Lengthsman. The role of the Lengthsman is to carry out a wide range of minor works mainly inthe town centre but also outside. He will for example deal with the removal ofoverhanging vegetation where it obstructs the pavement or footway or theremoval of weeds from the “splitter” islands along the by-pass or the unblockingof grids and gullys from mud and debris. His work has had a beneficial effect onareas of the town that were previously not maintained. The Council had agreed inprinciple to having the Lengthsman extend his duties so as to provide gritting forthe main town centre pavements but this proved not to be necessary when theCounty Council reviewed its gritting procedures to cover that responsibility.

Other Activities - Flowers, Fireworks, Christmas Lights28.The Town Council owns 10 concrete flower tubs located outside the Guildhall/HSBC and around the top of St. Anne’s Church. They are planted up forthe summer and winter seasons. Though repainted in black and gold by theLengthsman during the year to enhance their appearance, a number of the tubshave become chipped and damaged.

29.The Council made a decision last year that they wished to give greater priority toflower displays and an order for what should be attractive flower planters hasbeen made which should be in place outside the Guildhall and elsewhere for theDiscover Bewdley weekend at the end of May. The Town Council provides andpays for the 12 hanging baskets in Load Street and parts of Severnside South. They have been in use for many years and are in need of renewal. The Counciltherefore has also just placed an order for new baskets which should be in placefor the Discover Bewdley weekend.

30.The Town Council currently provides the Christmas Lights which are switched onfor a period of about six weeks from late November into the New Year. It pays thecost of installation, maintenance and dismantling at a cost of £3,900 togetherwith the cost of the electricity. The Council invested in 15 new “feature” lights toreplace those which are fastened vertically to various lampposts which werebeginning to fail and cause electrical problems. Part of the cost was met by agrant from the County Council Economy Group of £1250.

31.The Town Council arranges and pays for the fireworks display which is centred onthe Rowing Club and forms part of the Carnival entertainment in June.

Town Planning32.Through its Planning Committee which meets each month, the Town Council maintains an active role in planning matters. All planning applications in Bewdley

Bewdley Town Council ANNUAL REPORT

Page 34: The Bridge - June 2011

are referred by the District Council to the Town Council Planning Committee for itsviews as statutory consultees. During the calendar year 2010 some 120applications were considered and recommendations made for either approval orrefusal.

33.Many of these applications related to the felling, pruning or crowning of trees within the town centre conservation area which the Committee is always anxiousto enhance and protect as a means of maintaining Bewdley as an attractiveriverside town.

34.All Planning Committee meetings of the Town Council are open to the public andgenerally take place (subject to occasional changes) at 6.15pm prior to eachCouncil meeting.

Communication with residents35.The full agenda and minutes of the Town Council and its Committees are availableto view on the town’s website at www.bewdley.org,uk. Copies of minutes of allCouncil and Committee meetings are also available on the three town noticeboards situated in the Load Street Car Park, on Load Street outside the Mayor’sParlour and inside the covered entrance to The Guildhall. They can also be viewedat the Library.

36. The Bridge magazine devotes one page each month to “Town Council News” which includes significant items from these meetings and additional informationrelevant to people in Bewdley.

Quality Status37.The Town Council retains its Quality Status that was granted for a four-year period from 2008 and which will expire (subject to renewal) in June 2012.

Bewdley Community Health & Facilities Group Project38.The Town Council continues to be actively involved as a member of the Community Health & Facilities Group Project. This involves the redevelopment ofthe site off Load Street comprising the medical centre, library and St George’sHall. Planning permission has now been obtained by the Bewdley DevelopmentTrust acting in conjunction with the Trustees of St George’s Hall for completerefurbishment the Hall and the replacement of the 1970s extension which wouldbe demolished.

Youth Facilities39.The Town Council continues to support the Youth Café through contributions andactivities of individual councillors. It has now been open for two years and isregarded as one of the most successful in the local area with its design, management and workings being used as a basis for similar ventures in other towns.

Policing in the Town Centre and Anti-Social behaviour40.The Town Council continues to be concerned about anti-social behaviour in the

Bewdley Town Council ANNUAL REPORT

Page 35: The Bridge - June 2011

town and is working with the Police and other relevant parties to try to reducesuch behaviour. There is also unfortunately evidence of a drug supply in thecommunity and the Town Council urges all authorities to clamp down andeliminate such activity. Councillor representatives regularly attend local PACTmeetings and meetings of the Wyre Forest Police Consultative Group.

Water & Gas Mains Replacement in Bewdley41. The difficult task of replacing and renewing gas and water mains along the High Street and Load Street was finished a year ago. Hopefully any similar large scale disruption can be avoided for many years to come.

Finances42.The bulk of the Town Council’s income continues to come from the Precept. Thisis the sum of money which the Town Council raises from householders in Bewdley. It forms part of the overall Council Tax levied by the County Council, West MerciaPolice Authority and the Fire & Rescue Service which is collected on their behalfby Wyre Forest District Council.

43.The Budget Working Group of the Council met on several occasions during theautumn and New Year to discuss what could be afforded and at what cost andmade some savings where it could to certain items of expenditure and increasedsome where it was prudent to do so. Once again when it came to setting thebudget there was a view amongst the Working Group and Town Councillors thatthe amount levied on householders for the Bewdley part of the total Council Taxbill should not be increased. It therefore remains at £21.52 for what will be thethird year running as shown in the table below:

Year Precept Band D Charge Increase£ £ %

44.The Council has continued its policy of building up a reasonable level of reservesgiven the overall uncertainty about public expenditure and what may be requiredto be funded form the Town Council in the future which is funded elsewhere atpresent.

45.For the year 2011/12 the Town Council has agreed to make £6,000.00 worth ofgrants to local organisations which is a similar figure to the current year. Voluntaryand community organisations who would be interested in applying for a grantshould make contact with the Town Clerk.

Dear editor,Wouldn’t it be lovely if some of Gary’s gorgeous views of Bewdley could be reproduced on block canvas – no need toframe - and perhaps sold from St. Anne’s?I would certainly like one of the cover-pic-ture on the March edition; it is a gem and thevery essence of our lovely town.Onto a less pleasant subject – vile dog poo, plus drifts of cigarette butts everywhere! Asa wheelchair user these are my bête-noir.Don’t we have a Street Sweeper in Bewdleyany more? I don’t mean that mechanisedthingy which doesn’t do the edges and cor-ners properly, nor the narrower pavementsand under the benches. We need a good conscientious person againwith a cart and broom who would take apride in what he does to keep Bewdleyspruce! Susan Cox

Dear Editor,

I was so pleased when the little park at theback of St Anne's school was refurbished. Ithas given great pleasure to my grandsons andme. My boys were delighted with all the newadditions, especially the willow tunnels. When we visited last week, it was with dis-may we saw that the two trees planted insidethe round benches had been snapped off, broken beer bottles smashed on the pathsand beer cans thrown down. When I startedpicking up the broken glass, I was laughed atby several girls who were trying hard towreck the swinging basket... How very sad that the few try to spoil thingsfor the many young children who enjoy thislittle oasis of childhood pleasure. The sameapplies to the Orchard in Bewdley museum.I cannot understand why anyone has to destroy something that has taken hours forsomeone to create and the broken plaquesare a sad sight to see. The children whomade them must be heartbroken.

Old St Anne’sLong before a church stood in its present place, there was a tiny chapel handily positioned ontop of an alehouse. As part of the work St Anne’s is undertaking to redevelop the church, they have been burrowing into old records now kept in Worcester. These give us a snapshotof life as it was in Bewdley in previous centuries. For the next few months we will be printing some extracts.

This month we go back to the 16th century and the days of Elizabeth 1st:

1569 Pd to the curat or chapleyn in payment of his halfyeres stipend at the feast of St Michell the Archangell in the 10th yere of the sovereign lady the queene £5 10s

1572 Pd unto Rd Bonkenell for a new bucket to the town well……5d

1578 Pd to William Lake for mending the gomestoole………4d(“gomestoole” is another name for a ducking stool)

1589 Paide for ringinge when the Spanniardes shippes were taken in Irelande 15d(this was the Spanish Armada)

1595 Pd for digginge of xxvii loades of stone to pave in the parke lane and at tynkers gateand att Severne Bridge………6s 9d

Frazzle UpdateMany of you will know that Frazzle has been rather poorly. The final diagnosis was that shewas suffering from stomach lesions. I left her at the Guide Dog's Veterinary Clinic in Leamington, where she spent nine days.

The house was not the same and I was constantly asked where, then how she was. She evenreceived a Get Well card! It was good to get her home and to see her regain her strengthand appetite. Guide Dogs estimate that each dog from birth to death costs in the region of£50,000. All the money is donated by the public - thank you! Hearing from Arty's owner on the Isle of Wight reminds me what a life changing difference a dog can make to someonevisually impaired. (Only 5% of owners are totally blind.)

On the 19th April, Frazzle returned to the vet for a further endoscopy. Her stomach is recovering well and hopefully the change of diet will be sufficient to keep her fit and well inthe future.

Her training, although interrupted, has continued and she is proving a very willing, responsiveworker. Her move into formal training has been postponed to ensure that she is fully fit forthe intensive work she will undertake at Leamington. It seems likely that she will move on before the end of July.

It will be a very difficult day when she is collected, but I look forward to meeting puppy number 3. I know that I will be informed of Frazzle's progress and, if she qualifies, she will bean affectionate, loyal and reliable friend.

Many thanks to everyone who has supported Frazzle and me of late.

Gabi Wootton

p.s. I have received many comments about my last entry. I think the fouling of the streets isno worse; dare I say it seems a little better. However, we must continue to be vigilant. The complications in both children and adults caused by campylobacter are appalling.

We’re enjoying our walks together, cuddles & even a few sneeky titbits when no-one’s looking.

My human friend is a 13year old girl who has now come to stay much to my joy and the catsdisgust!

Sorry, it’s not a very long letter this month, but off for another chase about now!

On the evening of 18th April the great andthe good of Bewdley congregated at theGuild Hall to give account of the activities oftheir respective organisations at the AnnualMeeting of the Town Council.

In preparing my report I first referred to lastyear’s, and it struck me how little hadchanged. Fluctuations in crime trends arevery low, some worse, some better. Overall, crime has increased by 55 incidents, whichincludes a 7.8% increase in violent crime. However anti-social behaviour, criminal damage and non-dwelling burglaries have decreased significantly for the second yearrunning. Recent good news was the conviction of a Worcester criminal for a series of burglaries around Hales Park in October, and the charging of two Kidderminster youths with break-ins tosheds and carriages at Bewdley railway station early this year.

Our establishment of Officers at Bewdleyhas remained constant since last September. I mentioned in a previous Bridge article thatthis was as good as it will get. How true thatis proving to be.

We have consolidated our community activities, particularly in the schools. Youth PACT and Cop Stop are now regular features at Bewdley School & 6th Form Centre, and PACT meetings are held quarterly at Bewdley Baptist Church. Theyare advertised on the Town Council noticeboard at Beale’s Corner, which is back in use having been felled by a blast of hot air in January. We also pick up issues from thetown centre PACT boxes, and from incidentpatterns and crime trends. If a lot of

complaints arise from a particular area, thenclearly there is a problem for us to address. The current main issue, which has the support of many in the town, is a drive to introduce 20 mph speed limits within thetown centre conservation area.

Our CSO’s Jeni & Nicky have been heavilyinvolved in delivering tag rugby to our fourprimary schools. If you know a pupil atthose schools, they can tell you all about it.

Neighbourhood Watch continues to expandsteadily, and we are grateful to our co-ordinators for their support. We are moving towards making NHW more self-sufficient and have established links withgroups extending from the Teme Valley toChaddesley Corbett. Criminals are very mobile these days and are active across awide area.

We target drug users who commit crimeand ASB (Antisocial behaviour) and have supported the eviction of two individualsfrom Wribbenhall. A drugs analyser machinehas been utilised as a condition of entry totwo town centre licensed premises with thefull support of the licensees.

The next few years promise to be a challenging and uncertain time for all of us.We can only speculate on how policing inBewdley will be affected, but I’m sure thatwith all the comment in the media you don’tneed me to tell you which way the wind ofchange is blowing.

TOWN COUNCIL MEETING HELD ON 3RD MAY 2011Church ClockIt’s probably not that well known but responsibility for looking after the clock on St Anne’sChurch tower falls upon the Town Council. It is serviced each year but being electric itneeds to be re-set manually after any power cuts or after the hour change each spring andautumn. Climbing up into the loft is not the easiest thing to do unless you’re very athleticand it cannot always be done straightaway. The Town Council agreed to purchase a newautomatic timekeeping system so, rather like home computers, it can cope with thosechanges. Hopefully this will ensure perfect accuracy at all times in the future.Bus Service ReviewDuring the course of the last few months, the County Council has been conducting a reviewof bus services and looking at ways to reduce the amount spent on subsidies. There is nowa second round of consultation and the Town Council agreed to make representations as towhy it would be wrong to cut the 2A service to and from Kidderminster after 6.30pm onweekdays and the 300 service from Kidderminster to Worcestershire Royal Hospital onSundays.Policing in BewdleyCouncillors were concerned to hear about anti-social behaviour and damage to property inthe town over the Easter week-end. The Town Clerk was asked to write to the Inspector ofPolice at Kidderminster to seek assurances that a prompt response could always be given bythe Police to such incidents as and when they occurred in the future; there being scepticismthat was the case at present.Annual Town MeetingThe Annual Town Meeting had taken place on 18th April when members of the public wereable to listen to short presentations given by various voluntary and community groups in thetown and Town Councillors also gave their reports for the year and answered questions asto their activities. Birthday GirlsSt Anne’s Easter celebrations featured an extra reason to celebrate this year. A regular attender atthe morning service, Kathleen Kenworthy, had a birthday. Not just any old birthday; it was her hundredth birthday and was an occasion for the choirand congregation to sing some of her favourite musicand to join in cakesand congratulations afterthe service.

Another member of St Anne’s congregation with a birthday this month is Muriel Allen. She achieves the splen-did age of 95. Born in Malvern she came to Bewdley in1986 where she has lived ever since, with most of her fam-ily in the area.

This year is certainly seeing many exciting things for Muriel--- A cousin receiving Maundy money from the Queen, agrandson’s wedding, a great grandson’s christening, a special birthday, and daughter Rosemary andfriend Heather attending a Buckingham Palace GardenParty in recognition of their work with Barnardos and the Special Olympics.

Sky News comes to St Anne’s, BewdleySt Anne’s Church, Bewdley, made the national news last month when it received a visit

from a Sky News team.

A report by the National Churches Truston England’s church buildings had said that10% were in urgent need of repair.

Reporter Gamal Fahnbulleh from SkyNews visited St Anne’s to interview therector, Rev Keith James. He asked RevJames for his views on the report's find-ings, how churches find funding for workon its fabric and how St Anne’s church hasbeen looking after its own building.

He also spoke to members of the congregation before filming shots of StLeonard's church, Ribbesford which willsoon need extensive work on its building.

The interview went out live, with a longerinterview and more footage of St Anne's, broadcast later in the day.

Bewdley Concert Band’s Royal Wedding Performance

When I first stepped into Jubilee gardens, I said “WOW!”in my head. There must have been over 100 people havinga picnic or just lying around. And there we (Bewdley Con-cert Band) were, the centre of attention. So I sat in myplace, quite close to the back, and looked around. Thenfrom the first song to the last (my favourite, “Thriller” byMichael Jackson), I knew that the Bewdley Concert Bandwere an instant success. By the end we all were tired andsweaty but still smiling!

Academy's First GraduatesA group of over 30 people aged 55 plus, have just received their certificates after completingthe BBC First Clicks course at Bewdley based IT and Training company, the TDM Wyre Acad-emy. The 10 session-course was devised to help the estimated 9.2 million people in the UKwho do not currently use the internet to get online. Over 5 weeks, the participants enjoyedthe relaxed and friendly atmosphere of the Academy, whilst learning basic computer skills andhow to get online.

Derek Tiffany, one of the course trainers said “Our course was all about encouraging peopleand giving them the confidence to get online. We said from the outset, that no one was tooold (our oldest participant was 92) or unskilled (we had people who'd never even switched acomputer on).” He went on to say “There are many advantages of getting online, from beingable to check on the news/weather, researching a trip out, through to banking and shopping. It was fantastic to see their confidence grow and to see them getting excited about the pos-sibilities these skills have opened up for them.”

“I really enjoyed the course and I now feel much more confident about getting online”, saidMargaret, a course member. “My husband has even let me use our computer for the firsttime!”.

Peter, another participant was thrilled to be able to set up his own email account and to beable to send his very first email; he said “This will give me greater freedom and enable me tocommunicate with friends around the world.” Some of the participants have enjoyed thecourse so much that they are enrolling on some of the other courses that the Academy of-fers, where they will be learning specific things such as editing images, videos, spreadsheets, online social media and many more.

“The TDM Wyre Academy is planning to run some further beginners courses during the nextacademic year”, said Derrin Kent, Managing Director of the TDM Wyre Academy. “We hopeto continue to bring valuable knowledge to members of the local community and help differ-ent groups to make the most of the latest technological tools, as it could save them time andmoney and make a real difference to peoples lives.”
