President’s Column . . . James MarekIS GOD CHALLENGING THE UNITY OF

THE BRETHREN?Life is full of challenges – some-

times challenges come more oftenand in greater magnitudethan we would prefer oreven feel equipped toface. Challenges can makeus uncomfortable, but of-ten make us and our faithstronger. As any athletecan testify, the body isimproved when it is chal-lenged. Lifting weightsor running is seldom comfortable, butis necessary to condition the bodyfor peak performance.

God also uses challenges. I believeGod most often allows us to facechallenges to deepen our faith anddraw us into a closer relationship withHim. Most Christians agree that theyare closest to God during trials orchallenges. Due to some of the thingsthat have taken place in the Unitywithin the last 12 months, I wonder ifGod may not be challenging us as aUnity in the area of missions. I think

it is very possible that God has en-trusted the Unity with some very

important kingdom workin both foreign and homemissions. These missionefforts are manifestationsof the fulfillment of Jesus’mandate we know as theGreat Commission. Mis-sions is one of the col-lective efforts we as aUnity have agreed to un-

dertake together. One of the reasonsthe Unity exists is so we can worktogether in missions. Recently, it ap-pears God may have added to ourmission work domestically with thebeginning of the mission at CadeLake. God seems to be moving in aspecial way there, as well. While it isexciting to see new Christians beingadopted into God’s family, we mustremember that mission work takescommitment as well as prayerful andmonetary support. The Unity funds

in mission accounts are low. Thefunds particularly in the foreign mis-sion coffers are at the point whereany reserves will likely be consumedin 2012 if mission giving is not in-creased. Meanwhile we as a Unityhave started the Home Missions Fundto support domestic missions likethat which is being carried out atCade Lake. This mission effort willalso require funding. Since our mis-sion work has increased, our prayer-ful and monetary support must alsoincrease in order to continue the workGod appears to have laid before us asa Unity. At the last mission festival,David Miller opened with a greatdevotional on Jesus’ first missiontrip. As a part of that devotional,David referenced a book that I wouldhighly recommend called DesiringGod. David quoted the author’s find-ings that the churches who supportmissions generously are the mostlikely to grow.

God has entrusted the church (uni-versal) with the privilege of spreadingthe gospel of Jesus Christ. While notall of us can be missionaries per se,most of us can help support ourmission efforts prayerfully and with

the financial resources with whichGod has entrusted to us. I encourageall Unity churches to examine theirbudgets and prayerfully consider waysto increase mission giving. It is impor-tant that we continue the missionefforts in which we are currently in-volved. It is a privilege to work as aUnity with God in this area, but itdoes not come without challenge. It isgoing to take a Unity commitment onbehalf of each church. Our missionseffort within the Unity is solely sup-ported by voluntary donations. Nei-ther foreign nor home missions re-ceive any portion of the BrethrenFund contributions. They operate to-tally on voluntary donations. If youand/or your family would like to sup-port foreign missions, home missionsor both directly or through your localcongregation, I encourage you to doso. Please ask God what he wantsyour role to be in the Unity Missionsprogram. He appears to be entrustingus with the privilege of more servicein the area of missions, now it is up toall of us how we will respond. Pleasepray about missions, and let’s keepthe momentum going.

William John Baletka, Jr., completedhis earthly journey and went to jointhe Lord on October 20,2011. He was born onJuly 22, 1926, in theBarclay community onthe border of Bell andFalls Counties in Texas.He was the son of Will-iam John Baletka, Sr., andRosalie MikulencakBaletka. He graduatedfrom Rosebud HighSchool and the University of Texas atAustin, attended Moravian TheologicalSeminary, and then received his Mas-ter of Divinity Degree from the Pres-byterian Seminary in Austin, Texas.Following his ordination, John be-came known more familiarly as BrotherJohn.

In 1948, John was the co-leader ofa summer Christian leadership train-ing program of The Unity of theBrethren known as Hus School. Dur-ing that summer, he met his future lifemate, Joyce Siptak, who was a stu-dent in the program. Three years later,August 16, 1951, they were married atthe New Tabor Brethren Church.

WILLIAM JOHN BALETKA, JR.John was ordained by The Unity

of the Brethren in April 1951 at theOcker Brethren Church.He began his ministry atthe Temple BrethrenChurch, and continuedin that pastorate for 16years. During that resi-dency, the congregationcarried out two majorbuilding programs, andJohn also traveled toserve the congregations

of Granger, Buckholts, and Austin atvarying times.

John and Joyce were blessed bythe birth of three sons during theiryears in Temple: John Mark, JamesCraig, and William Andrew.

In 1953, John was charged with theresponsibility of leading an effort tofind a permanent home for Hus School.Land was donated in the New Taborcommunity, funds were raised, andscores of volunteers responded tothe call to assist with the building ofthe Hus School Encampment nearCaldwell, Texas. The facility was dedi-cated in June 1957. Throughout the

years, the teaching programs and thebuilding facilities were expanded. Johnand Joyce continued their involve-ment with the Hus Encampmentthrough 2005.

The Baletka’s moved to Austin in1966 and remained there serving theAustin Brethren Church until 1977.During this ministry, the Austin con-gregation relocated and built a newfacility on Peyton Gin Road.

During the last two years of livingin Austin, John commuted to SanAngelo, Texas, where he preached atthe Wall Brethren Church for twoSundays a month. In 1977, John ac-cepted a call to serve the Wall Church.During his service there, a new Fel-lowship Building was built in 1982.John continued that pastorate until1985.

John accepted a call to serve theNew Tabor Brethren near Caldwell inthe summer of 1985 and served thereuntil his retirement from the activeministry in 1993.

Throughout his ministry, John wasactive in the Unity of the Brethren innumerous capacities, including hisservice as President of the SynodicalCommittee from 1961-65 and 1979-83.He was also instrumental in the devel-opment and implementation of theMinisters’ Retirement and MedicalPrograms.

After moving to Caldwell, Johnand Joyce began singing with theBurleson County Czech singers. Wear-ing traditional Czech costumes, theyannually opened the Kolache Festi-val program by singing the CzechNational Anthem. In 1998, John andJoyce were honored to be named theKing and Queen of the Festival rec-ognizing their involvement in promot-ing the Czech heritage.

On August 16, 2011, John andJoyce celebrated their 60th weddinganniversary. Both agreed that it wasGod who gave them dedicated Chris-tian parents, who brought them to-

gether in 1948, and who blessed andguided them throughout their lives.

John enjoyed God’s handiwork innature. He built a homemade trailer forcamping supplies, as the family trav-eled around Texas and Colorado, aswell as numerous fishing and huntingtrips with his sons and other rela-tives. He also enjoyed the hobby ofbird watching with Joyce whereverthey traveled.

One of the highlights of workingwith Hus School Classes was teach-ing the students to sing the challeng-ing Czech anthem “Hoj Verni v Boj”(Ho! Faithful in Battle) and then lead-ing all Hus Ex-Students in singing theanthem at Unity conventions andHus School closing programs. Fit-tingly, this was sung in tribute to

Brother John by all in attendance athis funeral service.

John is preceded in death by hisparents and his son, William (Bill)Andrew. He is survived by his wife of60 years, Joyce, son Mark and hiswife Susan, son Jim and his wifeDawn Marie, his sister Adele Windrum,and brother-in-law Joe H. Siptak andhis wife Vicki, six grandchildren andnumerous nephews and nieces, otherrelatives, and many friends.

Funeral services were held Sun-day, October 23, at the New TaborBrethren Church. Burial was at theadjacent Church Cemetery.

Alice Kocurek was appointed asTreasurer of the Brethren JournalBusiness Committee.

Dorothy Kocian and Jean Kotrlawere appointed to the Board of Chris-tian Education.

Martha Dove was appointed to theBoard of Home Missions.

A motion was made and passed forseveral appointments to be made bythe Synodical Executive Committee,which include Hus Encampment Boardof Trustees Chairman, Treasurer, andBoard member, and Brethren JournalSecretary/reporter.

The term “vacancy” was definedas such: In consideration of a lack ofattendance at some committee meet-ings, resignation is a vacancy orincompletion of a term. The ExecutiveCommittee suggests encouraging thechairman of the committee to getactive board members and to ap-proach those who are not active toresign.

Update on Christ Covenant Churchin North Carolina: President Marekreported on the church and their de-sires. They are interested in the art ofmaking kolaches. They are hungry forconnection with anything Brethren.Contacts are Carl and Melanie Shamel.

President Marek presented a plaqueto Rev Milton Maly for serving as theEditor of the Brethren Journal for 26years and thanked him for his service.

The motion that passed at theConvention to consolidate the workand the assets of H.I.L.L. into theBoard of Christian Education wasoverlooked as a referendum item.Consequently, the bylaws change thatwas also part of the motion could notbe effective, and therefore the in-struction contained in the motioncould not be implemented until thenext convention, and only after refer-endum approval.

A Power Point presentation wasgiven by Rev. Jim Heckman of theprogress that has been done at theCade Lake Community Chapel. TheAdvisory Board consists of Bro. Jim(Ex-officio), Claren Kotrla, Rev. LindaChandler, Rev. Kay Polasek, Rev. LarryKoslovsky, Guy Huffman, Justin Lewis,Lori Suehs, Jesse Johnson, and DavidJohnson. The Cade Lake Community

Report by Rev. Tommy Tallas onthe Unity Bylaws: The bylaws wouldbe updated and rewritten to makethem more consistent by the October2012 synodical meeting. The commit-tee appointed includes Bro. Tommy(chairman), Rev. Whitney Amos,Marvin Chlapek, Jean Blaha Davis,Pat Hejl, Peggy Hejl, Kent Laza, DawnMarie Baletka, and Rev. NelloStrickland.

A committee will be formed at thenext meeting to organize a 100-yearcelebration (to be held in 2014) of theHus School being formed.

During the lunch break, a dedica-tion of playground equipment washeld in memory of Barbie Fojtasek.

Before the second session began,Claren Kotrla (outgoing President)led everyone in a prayer for Unity inthe church as follows: “Holy Spirit, asin the past you united different menand women and made them one, sobring us together in a oneness thatcelebrates our diversity of talent andability. May our personalities blend in

a superb harmony, as, laying our egosaside, we learn to prefer one anotherand to delight in encouraging thegifts we see in others. Let there be nostar temperament, no prima donnabehavior among us, but a sense ofensemble, as we try to be as anony-mous as possible so that you canshine through our efforts to the gloryof Christ. And when all is done, maywe be in the wings and HE in thespotlight, taking center stage andreceiving all the applause! Holy Spirit,you who are fully God and yet soanonymous, hide us that we mayreveal Him. Amen.”

The meeting adjourned at 4 p.m. inprayer. Everyone was invited to at-tend the Dedication service of theCade Lake Community Chapel.

The Pastoral Relations Committeeis pleased to announce that threeUnity of the Brethren Churches haverecently ended their search for spiri-tual leadership.

In the weeks following the Unity’sconvention in New Tabor, TX, bothIndustry and Fayetteville BrethrenChurches extended a call to Rev. KayPolasek. Both congregations, formerlyserved by Rev. Milton Maly, spentmonths in prayer and discernmentbefore being lead by the Holy Spirit tooffer the pastorate position to Rev.Polasek.

Although the churches have along history of working together andsharing the services of a pastor, it wasnot a foregone conclusion that onepastor would lead the two churchesinto the future. The Board of Elders ofboth congregations met often withthe Pastoral Relations Committee and

each sought God’s will in making thisvery important decision. Pastor Kayfirst received the call to service fromthe Industry Brethren Church, and afew weeks later was honored with asimilar request from Fayetteville Breth-ren Church.

Kay and her husband, Ben Polasek,currently reside in Snook, TX. PastorKay has served the Unity of the Breth-ren in a myriad of ways, including lead-ership positions in Christian Sisters,Christian Education, Sunday SchoolUnion, and as the pastor of Faith Breth-ren in Bryan, TX. Kay has also servedmany families in her position of Chap-lain for Hospice Brazos Valley.

The Bryan/College Station Breth-ren Church deliberated on their searchfor a pastor for approximately 18months. During this time, they wereblessed in being served by numerous

Now there is definitely a hint of fall in the air. This reminds us of fall festivalsand Thanksgiving and fall congregational meetings, and such meetings usuallycall for congregations to set budgets for the coming year. This is true for theForgoing Missions Board, as well. However, at this time the Board is concernedabout completing the necessary funding for the current 2011 Budget.

It is important for all of us to understand that Foreign Missions income isnot keeping up with expenditures needed to fulfill our commitments to themissionaries representing us out in the world. The purpose of this newsletteris to remind us of the 2011 Budget approved by the Synodical Committee.

The Think Tank began withsmall group discussion – 15 Hussitesrepresenting 16 Hus School classesbetween the years 1948-2007 discussedwhat Hus School had meant to them.Discussion points centered aroundhow each individual had grown withGod and with their peers throughtheir Hus School experience and whatchallenges the program faces today.A second discussion group of peoplewho did not attend Hus School fo-cused on the challenges and benefitsof a program like Hus School fromtheir fresh perspective and sharedinsights on similar programs withinother denominations. After sharingthe key points from these discus-sions in a large group setting, theThink Tank began to work toward avision for the Hus School Program,focusing on Hus candidate require-ments and the program’s purpose.

There was an agreement that HusSchool should be a separate programfrom the regular camping programand should be offered to persons

ages 16 and above. These candidatesshould be carefully selected throughan application and recommendationprocess. It was recognized that not allyouth who applied would qualify forthe program. To serve these campers,it was suggested that a Sr. High,Challenger camp be offered for indi-viduals ages 15-high school senior asthe next progression in the campingprogram.

It was determined that Hus Schoolwill be an intense three-week programthat will create Christ followers forlife. Hus School will raise up andequip individuals that utilize theirspiritual gifts and talents to thrive inthe midst of hostility in the world andin their own churches. Hus Schoolwill focus not only on leadershipskills for teaching Sunday school,leading worship, VBS, and other pro-grams, but will also teach the skillsnecessary for thriving in the work-place, education, and modern culture.The Hus School program will alsoinclude a hands-on service opportu-nity and guide candidates in being

Brother Mark anticipateshis ordination service will be this nextJanuary.

Rev. Sebek had been serving theUnity with pulpit supply in recentyears while completing his instruc-tion with the Hus International Schoolof Ministry. He is a graduate of TexasA&M University, and is currently aBiology teacher in the Troy SchoolDistrict, though previously he hasserved as a coach and athletic direc-tor for various school districts.

Mark journey of faith ledhim to serve the Unity of the Brethrenas both a lay and licensed minister forover seven years. His dedication andcommitment as a servant of the Lordhas touched the hearts of manythroughout the denomination.

Illustrate the Story Using a Demonstration – You will needempty aluminum soda pop cans. Show your children an emptypop can, place it on the floor, and put your foot on it andbalance your weight over it while holding onto the back of achair. Let your children step on it and try to balance theirweight on it also. Comment on how strong the can is.

Tell the children that Samson didn’t always do what he wassupposed to do. He did a bad thing when he wanted to pleaseDelilah more than God. God cannot be around sin, and didn’thelp him to be strong when the bad men came and put him inprison. Putting a dent in this can is like letting sin into yourlife. (Place a dent in the can.) Now what do you think willhappen if I try to step on this can? (Show your children howthe can cannot hold your weight any longer.) This is what sindoes to our lives, and what it did to Samson’s life. But remem-ber, when we ask God to forgive us, he takes away our sinsand it is like we have no more dents. (Show your children anew can.) God makes us strong again. (Let your children try thedemonstration on other cans.)


On Sunday, October 9, 2011, theIndustry Brethren Church had theirfirst Blessing of the Pets worshipservice. There were six pets (dogs)blessed during the service, as well asseveral other members provided pic-tures of their pets to be blessed byPastor Kay Polasek. All of the guestswere “super good” and welcomedtheir blessing with the best of dispo-sition. (We think they knew what wasgoing on.) It was very endearing toshare the service with our pets and bereminded of their devotion and com-panionship to us. Blessing of theAnimals or (Blessing of pets as com-monly called) began as a remembranceof St. Francis of Assisi’s love for allcreatures. Francis, whose feast day isOctober 4th, loved the animals of hishilltop town. He wrote a canticle ofthe Creatures, an ode to God’s livingthings, “All praise to you, Oh Lord,for all these brother and sister crea-tures.” The bond between pet and his

On Sunday at the Industry Breth-ren Church, following the blessingeach pet was given a gold-coloredfabric scarf with a cross on it to wearhome and a treat to eat later. Theservice was enjoyed by all inattendance.

On Sunday, November 6, 2011, atthe regular 9:00 a.m. worship serviceat the Industry Brethren Church inIndustry, Texas, 58 veterans werehonored on the program, plus 2 fromthe Shelby American Legion (AugustVoelkel and William (Bill) Vasicek).This was the second year that thisservice of “Honor Our Vets” was heldby the Industry Brethren Church.

At the beginning of the service,three Boy Scouts, Jordan Spiess, SamLuedeker, and Matthew Luedeker, car-ried in a religious military banner asthe congregation sang “Onward Chris-tian Soldiers”. The program illustratedthe sacrifice of the servicemen andtheir families to our country, no matterin what capacity they served. “Let usnever forget to remember them” wasthe tone of the service. Liz Treybigcalled the names of the honorees, andthe church bell rang one time for eachas their names were called. Livingvets came forward to receive a remem-brance ribbon with a Red Buddy Poppyand a small labeled US flag from theBoy Scouts. Each representative ofthe deceased vets came forward andlighted a candle in the triangle holder

decorated with red, white, and bluebunting. The church was decoratedwith flags and patriotic theme items,as well as the walk to the church andFellowship Hall was lined with USflags.

A donation was made to the VFWon behalf of the veterans being hon-ored so that the church could providea Red Buddy Poppy to each personattending. Two Girl Scouts, EmilySpiess and Kaylin Krebs, assistedJoan Coufal, Vice President of theIndustry Brethren Board of Elders,with pinning the ribbon/flowers onthe vets. Terri Ross played the harp(including all the five branches of themilitary theme songs) during the ser-vice, and each vet or his representa-tive came forward to be honored.Sharon Spiess, organist provided theorgan music for the congregation tosing patriotic songs.

There was a large wreath with redand blue flowers to represent eachdeceased vet, with a wooden cross inthe center and a white dove at the topbelow five small US flags to representthe five branches of the military andon the bottom the words “Thanks

Vets” was flanked with white doves.Each vet that was honored had his/her name on large red ribbons thatwere held by a US flag throw on atripod in the front of the church.

Afterward, everyone went to theFellowship Hall next door to enjoy acatered meal by Orsak’s Cafe ofFayetteville and many delicious des-serts. A large banner with “We sayThank You to our Vets” was abovethe food serving bar. Everyone hadan opportunity to read the biographywritten on each vet honored. Therewere many military-related items thatthe vets brought to exhibit, as well asdisplays of military interest that at-tracted attention. Terri Ross playedbackground music while the peopleate, visited, and viewed exhibits in

Fellowship Hall. People attended fromOklahoma, Garland, Bryan, Taylor,Austin, Brenham, Giddings, Bellville,Columbus, and surrounding commu-nities. There were 88 people inattendance.

For those vets that could notattend due to health, etc., a certificate(stating that the church was honoringthem for their military service) with aUS flag pin and remembrance ribbonwere sent to them. A US flag wasplaced on each veteran’s grave in thecemetery.
