He compared these laws tothe two lines that make the cross – theline going up and down as the law tolove God and the line that crosses asthe law to love your neighbor. BRETHREN JOURNAL September 2016/5

Sometimes it feels like we onlyhave two seasons in Home SweetTexas: summer and winter. Of course,we have the treasure of bluebonnetsspringing up like blankets of colorfulfrosting for a brief period each year! What a treasure! The heat of summeris clinging to our heels at present.Sunblock and insect repellent remainclose at hand. Lawn mowers are get-ting their exercise. Guzzling water andGatorade is a priority. Never fear;sweater weather will reappear! (Forthose who enjoy it!)

In the midst of the heat and thecertainty of the change in seasons, the reminder pops up:

God has a purpose for you – thingsHe wants you to do.

Are you listening and watchingthroughout your days to His voice?

While you’re doing chores at home...laundry, dishes, repairs, sitting withfamily, sifting through bills…

Are you listening? While you interact with others? Are you listening? While putting in overtime at work? While waiting for more work?

“In the Midst of the Heat”- by Sister Vanessa Mitchell

While hoping for a job?Are you listening? While trying to eat right and exercise? While sitting in church? While holding your child with joy?Are you listening and watching

throughout your days for God’s voice? If your heart truly desires to know

what God wants and to commit tofollow God’s direction without anyreservations, you will welcome Hiswhisper which comes in the sheersilence.

You will be able to hear it.The prophet Elijah, who lived long

before Jesus came to us in the flesh, went through a time of maddeningfear for his life. He desired to do asGod directed him, but his emotionsoverwhelmed him. God stepped in –as He is always faithful to do – andhelped him.

What could you use God’s helpwith today?

In the Book of 1 Kings in the Bible, chapter 11, verses 9 through 18, wecan see Elijah relearning how to listenfor God’s help with his life:

Now there was a great wind, sostrong that it was splitting moun-tains and breaking rocks in piecesbefore the Lord, but the Lord was notin the wind; and after the wind anearthquake, but the Lord was not inthe earthquake; 12 and after theearthquake a fire, but the Lord wasnot in the fire; and after the fire asound of sheer silence. 13 WhenElijah heard it, he wrapped his facein his mantle and went out and stoodat the entrance of the cave. Thenthere came a voice to him that said,“What are you doing here, Elijah?”14 He answered, “I have been veryzealous for the Lord, the God ofhosts; for the Israelites have for-saken your covenant, thrown downyour altars, and killed your prophetswith the sword. I alone am left, andthey are seeking my life, to take itaway.” 15 Then the Lord said to him,“Go, return on your way to the wil-derness of Damascus; when you ar-rive, you shall anoint Hazael as kingover Aram. 16 Also you shall anointJehu son of Nimshi as king overIsrael; and you shall anoint Elishason of Shaphat of Abel-meholah asprophet in your place. 17 Whoeverescapes from the sword of Hazael,

BRETHREN JOURNAL September 2016/7

I have always enjoyed fantasy andscience fiction. I was the kid whocame straight home from school andturned the television on so I wouldnot miss a single moment of StarTrek. As an even younger lad Istumbled across BBC’s Doctor Whoon the local PBS station and instantlybecame a fan. When the BBC launchednew episodes in 2005, I returned forthe ride and am eagerly anticipatingnext season.

Of all the television programs thatfall under the science fiction andfantasy umbrella, The Twilight Zonestill remains a personal favorite ofmine over half a decade later. I wasnot yet born when it initially hit theairwaves, but I would occasionallysee it in syndication. Some years agoSyfy Channel began airing the entireseries as a marathon beginning everyNew Year’s Eve.

This became my New Year’s tradi-tion, as well. I would find myselfstaying up extremely late, drinkingnumerous cups of black coffee, andwatching the marathon until the needfor sleep rallied in the war againstcaffeine.

A Reminder from The Twilight Zone- by Jim Pokorny

Quite recently, I was able to pur-chase all five seasons in one com-plete set. All 156 episodes on 28DVD’s. No longer would I have towait for the annual marathon. I wouldbe able to watch all the episodes at amore moderate and infinitely sanerpace.

There are several things I like aboutthe series. First and foremost is thewriting of the late Rod Serling. I havealways admired his skill as a writerand his wonderfully delivered narra-tions. Second is seeing the old stars, most of whom are no longer with us.Third, you could always count onevery episode having an unusual andunexpected plot twist.

Finally, though it may seem sur-prising, a number of episodes hadsome really significant Christianovertones.

One such episode that alwaysstruck a chord deep within me was thefinal episode of season two entitledThe Obsolete Man. It starred a won-derful actor by the name of BurgessMeredith. I happened to watch thisepisode again in very late June justprior to John Hus Sunday. Recalling

that Hus defended the truth and thatthe books he wrote were publiclyburned encouraged me to watch thisepisode several times.

This was Meredith’s second offour appearances in The Twilight Zone.In this episode, he played the part ofa somewhat feeble-looking man namedRomney Wordsworth who has beensummoned to appear before somefuture State to face a charge of “Ob-solescence”. According to Serlings’narration, this future State “has oneiron rule: Logic is an enemy, and truthis a menace.”

Mr. Wordsworth enters throughtwo very tall doors and stands at theend of a very long table. At theopposite end sits the Secretary. Di-rectly behind the Secretary stands avery tall podium from atop which theChancellor presides. The enormity ofthese objects serves to illustrate howmuch distance there is between theindividual and The State that sits injudgment of him.

The Chancellor begins by inform-ing Mr. Wordsworth that he has beenunder investigation for the manda-tory period of one year and elevenmonths and that he has been found“Obsolete”. He further states that the

purpose of this televised hearing is torule on the charge and sentenceaccordingly.

The Chancellor asks Mr.Wordsworth his occupation. Mr.Wordsworth replies that he is a librar-ian. This brings about a chorus ofjeers from the officials seen standingsomewhat hidden in the shadows. The Chancellor reminds him how se-rious the charge of obsolescence isand again asks his occupation.

Mr. Wordsworth insists that he isa librarian adding, “If you peoplechoose to call that obsolete...”

He is immediately interrupted bythe Secretary who asks for clarifica-tion of the term. The Chancellor theninquires if by the term “you people”he means “the State”.

Mr. Wordsworth concedes this iswhat he means.

The Chancellor then asks if hepersists in his belief that he is alibrarian.

Mr. Wordsworth insists that he isa librarian.

The Chancellor then challenges,“Since there are no more books, Mr.Wordsworth, there are no more librar-ies, and of course, as it follows, thereis very little call for the services of a

librarian. Case in point: A minister. Aminister would tell us that his func-tion is that of preaching the word ofGod. And it follows that since TheState has proven that there is no God,that would make the function of aminister quite academic as well.”

Mr. Wordsworth declares, “ThereIS a God!”

Another chorus of jeers is heard. The Chancellor, now angry, statesthat Mr. Wordsworth is in error andproclaims that there is no God. Hethen picks up the microphone fromthe podium and shouts directly into itfor the benefit of those watching,“The State has proven that there is noGod!”

Mr. Wordsworth shouts back, “Youcannot erase God with an edict!”

The Chancellor shouts back, “Youare obsolete, Mr. Wordsworth!”

Mr. Wordsworth challenges, “Alie, no man is obsolete!... I am nothingmore than a reminder to you that youcannot destroy truth by burningpages!... I am a human being.”

The irate Chancellor then hurls aseries of insults aimed at Mr.Wordsworth.

Mr. Wordsworth counters with: “Idon’t care, I tell you. I don’t care. I’m

a human being, I exist... and if I speakone thought aloud, that thought lives, even after I’m shoveled into my grave.”

“Delusions, Mr. Wordsworth!” theChancellor screams. “Delusions thatyou inject into your veins with printer’sink. The narcotics you call literature:The Bible, poetry, essays, all kinds, all of it are opiate to make you thinkyou have strength, when you have nostrength at all! You are nothing butspindly limbs and a dream, and TheState has no use for your kind!”

The Chancellor then composes him-self and venomously states, “Youwaste our time, Mr. Wordsworth, andyou’re not worth the waste.”

Mr. Wordsworth is judged “Obso-lete” and condemned to death. Histwo remaining rights are to choosethe method of his execution and thetime it is to take place within the next48 hours.

Mr. Wordsworth asks the court toappoint an executioner and furtherrequests that only he and the execu-tioner be allowed to know the mannerof his execution. Although out of theordinary, the Chancellor agrees pro-vided the execution takes place withinthe prescribed time limit.

Mr. Wordsworth then requests onemore thing… a television audience towitness the execution. The Chancel-lor is more than happy to agree to thisterm.

Mr. Wordsworth then states thathis execution will take place at mid-night in his room. The Chancelloragrees to the terms and orders him toreturn to his room.

The next scene opens in Mr.Wordsworth’s room which is filledwith books and a clock. He is lying onhis bed looking at his clock.

Around 11:30 p.m. there is a knockat his door. Mr. Wordsworth opens itand finds the Chancellor standingoutside.

Mr. Wordsworth thanks him foraccepting his invitation, invites himin and closes the door behind him. While the Chancellor’s back is turned…Mr. Wordsworth secretly locks thedoor and tucks the key in his pocket.

A strained conversation takes placebetween these two men. Mr.Wordsworth then shows the Chan-cellor the remote operated televisioncamera that has been installed in hisroom. Suddenly, the lights come onand the two men realize they are beingtelevised.

“It’s not unusual that we televiseexecutions, Mr. Wordsworth,” theChancellor proudly declares. “Lastyear in the mass executions, we tele-vised around the clock. Thirteen hun-dred people were put to death in lessthan six hours.”

Mr. Wordsworth challenges thatThe State learns nothing from history. Both Hitler and Stalin are cited asexamples. The Chancellor replies thatneither Hitler nor Stalin went farenough. In his opinion, their errorwas in failing to finish the jobs theystarted.

The discussion eventually turnsto Mr. Wordsworth’s pendingexecution.

Mr. Wordsworth tells the Chancel-lor that his executioner arrived earlierand planted a bomb in the room – abomb which will destroy everythinginside the room when it detonatesprecisely at midnight.

The Chancellor comments that Mr.Wordsworth has chosen a quick endto his existence. He turns to leave andfinds to his great surprise that thedoor is locked. Panic sets in. TheChancellor pounds on the door. Hethen calls out but to no avail.

era and states, “How does a man reactto the knowledge that he’s going tobe blown to bits in a half an hour?Answer: That depends on the indi-vidual. As for me, I’m going to sitdown and read my Bible.”

He goes to a secret hiding place inthe room and retrieves a very old andworn Bible and returns to his seat infront of the camera. Mr. Wordsworthcalmly states, “It’s been hidden herefor over 20 years, it’s a crime punish-able by death, so it’s the only thing Ihave that has any value at all to me.So I’m just going to sit down and readit... until the moment of my death…How will you spend your last mo-ments Chancellor?”

The Chancellor realizes the spot heis in. If he shows any outward sign offear, the State loses some of its gripon the populace. Although unstated,he must inwardly hope that someofficial will come to rescue him fromhis predicament.

Mr. Wordsworth states, “Let thewhole country see the strength ofThe State, the resilience of The State, the courage of The State. Let thewhole country see the way a valiantman of steel faces his death… Whydon’t you sit down, we’ll have a little

chat. Just you and me... and the greatequalizer… Because death is the greatequalizer.”

Mr. Wordsworth turns to face thecamera. He says to the audience, “Sohere you have this strong, handsome, uniformed, bemedaled symbol of giantauthority and this little, insignificant,librarian... and suddenly… in the eyesof God... there is precious little todistinguish us.”

The Chancellor nervously takes aseat.

Mr. Wordsworth begins readingPsalm 23 aloud. He follows this withother selected Psalms. All the whilethe clock ticks methodically onwardand time moves mercilessly closerand closer to midnight.

With a single minute left, Mr.Wordsworth reads from Psalm 14:“The fool hath said in his heart, thereis no God... The Lord looked downfrom heaven upon the children ofmen, to see if there were any that didunderstand, and seek God...”

Suddenly, with only precious sec-onds remaining the Chancellor cracksfrom the strain. With tears in his eyeshe pleads, “Please, please, let me out!In the name of God… LET ME OUT!”

2. Say “This Play Dough is a lot like us when we are children. We are soft, or what we call pliable. Pliable means some-thing can be made into many shapes. Our hand is sort oflike the people we come in contact with. They can shape usin different ways, depending on their own shapes. He runs to door screaming, “LET MEOUT! LET ME OUT! LET ME OUT!”

Mr. Wordsworth arises and says,“Yes, Chancellor, in the name of God,I will let you out!” With that he handsover the key.

The Chancellor hurriedly unlocksthe door and rushes out of the roomleaving Mr. Wordsworth behind clutch-ing his old Bible. Mere seconds later, the bomb detonates, killing Mr.Wordsworth instantly.

Outside the room, the Chancellorpicks himself up from the rubble thathas escaped through the open door.Covered in dust and still shaking fromfear, the Chancellor departs in tears.

When the Chancellor arrives forduty the following day, the Secretaryimmediately informs him that he hasbeen stripped of his title.

The former Chancellor demands toknow why. The Secretary tells him,“You have disgraced The State. Youhave proven yourself a coward. Youhave, therefore, no function. You areOBSOLETE!”

Serling’s closing narration sumsthings up this way: “The chancellor, the late chancellor, was only partly

correct. He was obsolete, but so is theState, the entity he worshiped. Anystate, any entity, any ideology thatfails to recognize the worth, the dig-nity, the rights of man, that state isobsolete.”

It is important to note that a statesuch as the one Serling depicted doesnot simply sprout up overnight.

I leave you with the words ofMartin Niemöller, a prominent pastorwho was an outspoken critic of bothAdolf Hitler and the Nazi regime. Hespent the last seven years of Nazi rulein concentration camps. According toNiemöller:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out –

Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the TradeUnionists, and I did not speak out –

Because I was not a Trade Unionist. Then they came for the Jews, and

I did not speak out –Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me – and therewas no one left to speak for me.

Proverbs 13:20Whoever walks with the wise becomewise, but the companion of fools will

suffer harm.

At the start of a new school year, thoughts of new friends andnew situations come to mind. As parents, we pray ourchildren will find Godly friends that push them along the rightpath instead of leading them away from God. Proverbs hassomething to say about that, too, as well of the Story ofSamuel. Samuel’s mom wanted him to be a great prophet, soshe sent him away to live with the priests. She knew hewould be more like those he lived so closely with. It can bedifficult to bring up negative friendships, especially withteenagers. However, by using the wisdom of Proverbs, ourtask may be eased somewhat.

Dear friends,Our temporary detour of 17 months

came to an end on July 5th when wefinally slept our first night back in our“own” bed in Oaxaca City. What ajourney! Thanks for your prayersalong the way. We spent the first fewdays cleaning up and reorganizing, and of course visiting friends andteam mates.

Yet within days we were on themove again. One of our team families,Paco and Ofelia, who live three hoursaway, lost their 13-year-old son (Alexis)in a tragic accident. So for the last few

In Christ’s Love . . . from the Foreign Mission Fieldsweeks we’ve been going back andforth to spend time with them andhelp in any way we can, althoughnothing takes that kind of pain away. They are expecting a baby girl anyday, and this rich blessing is nolonger un-alloyed for the mother.

During this time details for a trip toPeru were finalized. We leave thisSaturday for two weeks. Our commu-nity of Mennonite Brethren churchesaround the world has varying strengthsand weaknesses and for decades therehas been a commitment among themto share burdens and resources. Thatis often fraught with cultural difficul-ties, as you can imagine, and oureconomic disparities tend to compli-cate the situation. So, the small con-ference of MB churches in northernPeru has been facing its own uniqueset of challenges for a while now, withno clear path out.

We have been invited to spendtime among the leaders to first be-come friends and then search to-gether for God’s direction and somesteps to implement. We all know thatthere is no “magic wand” that candispel their problems or cover themover, so please pray with us that wewould be able to make the most of theten days we have among the Peruvian

church, and that God would strengthenthem and encourage them to movebeyond what troubles them. This ishopefully only the first part of devel-oping a long-term relationship withthem.

When we return to Mexico City, weget to spend a couple days with Philipand his girlfriend, Cailey, and Elai. Ifwe could only have Mikael, too, wewould be a complete family, but hewill be on a business trip. We arelooking forward to those days to-gether. Maybe, because we are get-ting used to not having the kids in thehouse, these together times are moreprecious.

Mikael has an internship with IBMin San Francisco this summer and willbe finishing up his job there. He andElai return to Wheaton for their juniorand senior years. Philip will havefinished his engineering internship atan acetylene manufacturer in Texasand ready to go back to his junioryear of university.

We should be able to settle downa bit once Anne gets back to teachinghigh school (part time – she is start-ing already to shift her focus towardproviding more support for our team),starting on Aug 22nd.

Thank you for your support andprayers throughout this last stage ofour journey, and now also for what isto come.

Blessings, Robert

Dear wonderful prayer partners,You truly are sharing a part in the

Great Commission by praying for usand for His Kingdom to go forthamong the nations! “The Great Com-mission is not a suggestion to beconsidered but a command to beobeyed,” H. Taylor.

We are settling in. We had anamazing trip out west to see familyand the redwoods, then to Thailand, then on to our new home. Father hasgone before us in every way. Here area few examples. When we drove up toCharlotte there was only one spot tostop and unload, and it happened tobe in front of the roadside check in.The porter was not busy at all, andchecked in all 14 of our bags in 5minutes. Then when we got to thegate, they asked if anyone wanted tocheck in their carry ons for free. So wedid!

The 2016 Alpha theme was “DiveInto God’s Word”. It was an underwa-ter adventure that took campers on ajourney to learn about the Bible, theTen Commandments, God’s gift ofsalvation, and prayer.

Chants could be heard around thecamp as the campers learned to locatebook, chapter, verse… book, chapter, verse… book, chapter, verse. Theywere challenged that to be a child ofGod, you have to follow His Word. You can’t just hear about it. You haveto READ IT! LEARN IT! LIVE IT!

Campers painted sea creature wallhangings and made sea turtle photoframes. They also learned severalcamp songs, contemporary Christiansongs, and did quite a bit of dancing. For sports, campers played kickball, volleyball, and hungry hippos (a scooter

Alpha was a great camp. The camp-ers were wonderful, energetic, enthu-siastic boys and girls who soaked upthe lessons and opened their heartsto learning God’s word. We directorscan’t wait for Alpha 2017 and all Godhas in store until then.

Another amazing thing is that thekids did great in our many long cartrips. The guest houses we stayed inwere amazing. The flight to Asia wasnot that bad as we all slept. Gettingover jet lag was the easiest it has everbeen. And two days before we got toour new home, our teammates movedin ALL of our stuff into our apartmentthat had been in storage for over ayear.

We have felt so welcomed back. Our home is amazing and almost inplace, the mangos are sweet, andFather is on the move. Let us join withHim, His passion, His love for thenations, so that every person has thechance to know Him. He is so good.

We love and miss you all. We canstill text, email, and Facebook orFacetime with you.

What a wonderful 48 hours our 7-and 8-year-old campers had at En-counter Camp on June 9-11. Therewere 18 boys and girls from acrossthe Unity who descended upon theHus Encampment for a time of learn-ing about God, meeting new friends, and having a blast.

Our theme this year was “Sea theWorld God Created.” We had 4 les-sons throughout the 48 hours wherewe incorporated a Bible lesson andBible verse, music, games, crafts, andscience experiments. (ALL scienceexperiments worked this year!) Our 4lessons included God’s Creation, GodMade Me Special, Nothing Is Impos-sible for God, and Salvation.

The children enjoyed playing Hun-gry, Hungry Sharks, water games, crab soccer, bicycle riding, and kickball,in addition to fishing and many otherfun activities. There were also vesperservices, morning watch, and night-time devotions on the “beach”. Thesewonderful children of God had a ter-rific time. (Several parents told us that

their children were asleep before theyleft the camp grounds!) They were soexcited to learn and grow as childrenof God.

We would like to especially thankour wonderful staff for being excep-tionally exceptional! The children hada BLAST because of you. Tons ofmemories were made and friendshipsthat will last a lifetime.
