JANUARY 2ND, 2013 Welcome back to school! Please

stand in the lab area and wait for your new assigned seat.

THURSDAY 1/4/13 Homework – Evidence based claim

Bell work – 1. Sit in your new assigned seat. 2. Write down 3 things that you know

about the brain.

Page 5: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

INSTRUCTIONS FOR WORK TIME1. Fill in the 3 things you know now at

your own pace. 2. Answer questions 1-15 as you watch

the video. They are in order, so you need to keep up. If you fall behind, skip a few questions, and catch up.

3. Make sure to be on your best behavior! I am in the building, and anyone who’s name shows up on my naughty list will receive automatic administrative detention!!

LEARNING TARGETS I can use the scientific method

to conduct an experiment. I can read a metric ruler. I can collect and analyze data. I can measure my own reaction

time, and determine an average. I can draw logical conclusions.

Page 14: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

Q/MI Notes

What is reaction time?

The amount of time it takes for your body to respond to a stimulus.

Page 16: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

What is the stimulus? What is the response? What path does the message take?

Page 17: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

Q/MI Notes

Problem Do boys or girls have faster reaction times?

Page 18: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

Procedure1. Decide which partner will catch first, and which will

drop. 2. The partner who is catching lays their arm flat on the

table with hand hanging over the edge. 3. Spread fingers approximately 2 cm apart. 4. The partner who is dropping holds the ruler between

their fingers. The 0 mark (FOR CENTIMETERS) should be right at the top of their fingers.

5. Dropping partner drops the ruler, catching partner catches.

6. Record the number of centimeters it fell in the data table.

7. Repeat 2 more times with the same hand. 8. Switch to the other hand, complete 3 trials. 9. Switch partners and start at 2.

Q/MI Notes

Hypothesis If (girls/boys) have faster reaction times, then their rulers will fall a shorter distance than the boys.

Page 22: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

Task for today

Complete all trials for right and left hands for both partners!

Calculate the average distance the ruler fell for each hand.

Homework – Conclusion Q’s & statement

Bell work – 1. Open notebook to pages 55 / 56

Page 24: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

You have 5 minutes to…

Finish collecting data.

Calculate your own average for right and left hand. Add all 3 trials, divide by 3

Be back in your seat and ready to share.

Page 25: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

Converting Centimeters to Time

1. What is the scale on the x-axis?

2. What is the scale on the y-axis?

3. If the ruler fell 10 cm, what is the reaction time?

4. If the ruler fell 6 cm, what is the reaction time?

Page 26: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

Find your own reaction time for each hand!

Draw a line up from your average distance.

Draw a line over to read your reaction time.

Fill in the bottom of your data table.

Page 27: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

Thought Questions

How long does it take for a message to travel into your eyes, through your brain and to your hand?

Which 3 body systems work together to allow you to catch a falling object?

Page 29: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

Conclusion

Conclusion Statement: Based on the data that you collected, was your hypothesis correct? Use the 3 sentences format. 1.Accept or reject hypothesis.

2.Tell why based on your data…INCLUDE the average reaction time of your left and right hand.

3.Tell what you learned.

Page 67: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

PAGE 65 Bill Nye – genetic diversity

Focus question: How does sexual reproduction provide an advantage for the human immune system?

By reproducing sexually we create unique offspring, so the offspring has a strong immune system and can fight parasites. Our brains help us find mates with complimentary immune systems.

What is fertilization?

Fertilization is when a sperm cell meets with an egg cell to create a new organism.

Page 76: The body is made up of 100 trillion cells. There are 10 times more bacterial cells in your body than human cells

Where does fertilization occur?

Fertilization occurs in the oviduct (fallopian tube)

Then the egg implants in the uterus wall
