The 8 Characteristics of Life

All living things are made of one or more cells

There are an estimated 50-100 trillion cells in the human body.

All living things reproduce Two types of reproduction

• Sexual • Asexual

All living things grow and develop

Inherited information carried by genes controls the pattern of growth and development of organisms.

All living things adapt to their environment

Adaptations evolve over many generations by the reproductive success of those individuals with heritable traits that are best suited to their environments.

All living things respond to their environment

Stimulus• A change that directly influences the activity an

organism Response to light Response to sound Respond to taste Respond to touch Respond to smells

Homeostasis• Organism or cell maintains a stable internal

environment Body temperature

All living things eliminate wastes

Two ways we eliminate wastes are pretty obvious. Can you name any others?

• sweat, tears, mucus, sneezing, coughing, etc.

How about plants?

• gas exchange, vacuoles, dropping leaves

All living things move

Basilisk Lizard (Jesus Lizard) Movement requires the use of energy.

Leaves blowing in the wind does not count as movement by a plant. In what ways do plants move?

All living things obtain and use energy

In most food webs the energy comes from the sun. Please explain this statement.

Cellular respiration- cells release energy from food molecules to provide that energy for the essential processes of life.
