NEWS AROUND NORTHWOOD

Fourth graders have recently blasted off into a unit that is out of this world! They are

exploring space! After discussing the ways Earth moves, they started to explore the object that

orbits our planet, the moon. To further their knowledge on moon phases, they had the

opportunity to use Oreos to display each phase of the moon. They had fun creating gibbous and

crescent moons, but were most excited to eat their final product!

PBIS at Northwood – Parent Workshop, November 1-7:45AM: Have you ever wondered

what gold slips are? Or what PBIS stands for? Join us for a Parent Workshop all about PBIS:

Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports. We will discuss how PBIS works at Northwood

and how you can use similar strategies at home.

October 22-26 IOWA Assessment - Grades 3 and 5 - Parents/volunteers will not be allowed

in the building from 8:00 am to 12:00 pm

Northwood will administer the IOWA Assessments from October 22-October 26

to students in grades 3 and 5.

What is the IOWA Assessment?

The IOWA Assessment is a norm-referenced test (NRT). Scores from the NRT are used to compare the performance

of Fulton’s students with the performance of students in a national sample who are:

in the same grade, and

who took the test at the same point in the school year.

What can I do to help my child prepare for the IOWA Assessments?

Make sure your child attends school regularly and on time. Remember that tests reflect the overall achievement of your child. Time spent in learning situations increases the likelihood that he/she will do well

on tests. Avoid scheduling doctor’s or dentist’s appointments during testing times. Give your child encouragement. Praise him/her for the things done well throughout the year. A child who is

afraid of failing is more likely to make a mistake.

Ensure that your child has a well-rounded diet. A healthy body leads to a healthy, active mind. Make sure

the child has a good breakfast on testing days, and everyday.

Keep the lines of communication open between home and school. Parents and teachers should work

together to benefit the child.

Make sure your child is well rested on school days. Children who are tired are less likely to pay attention in class or to handle the demands of class work and tests.

Try not to be overly anxious about test scores. Too much emphasis on test scores can be upsetting to

children.

Don’t judge a child on the basis of a single test score. Test scores are NOT perfect measures of what a

child can do. There are many other things that might influence a test score. For example, a child can be

affected by the way he/she feels that day.

Follow normal routines. Interruptions of normal routines may affect your child’s performance.

If your child wears an assistive device, such as glasses or hearing aids, be sure he/she remembers to bring it

and wear it during all testing sessions.

School Visitation During IOWA

Since a quiet and distraction-free testing environment is so important for a good score,

parents/volunteers will not be allowed in the building from 8:00am to 12:00pm on testing

days. This includes parent volunteers, readers, and visitors of all grades. If you are coming to assist

in a classroom, please come after 12:00 pm.

Continuing our Northwood tradition from last year, on October 31st we will have our

schoolwide Book parade. Students are encouraged to dress up as their favorite book

character and bring the book to school to share with their classmates!

Northwood ES will host an Open House for prospective parents and students November 2, 2018

at 8:30 am in the Media Center. During this session new families will meet PTA and

Administration. New families will have an opportunity to tour our school and admin will be

available for a Q&A session. Please spread the word in your neighborhood regarding this event.

Lifetouch Picture Re-takes Students who missed out on having their school picture taken will be given another opportunity to do so on November 1. Any student who was absent or forgot to bring in picture money is welcome to have their photo taken. In addition, once the portrait packages that were purchased on the original picture day are sent home, if they are unacceptable to you, you may send the entire package back to school on Re-Take Day and have the photo taken again.
