2019 Northwood Field Day Volunteers Needed!

Northwood Elementary is having its annual Field Day on Monday, May 13, 2019. The morning

Field Day will feature grades 1, 3, 5 (8:00-10:30am). The afternoon Field Day will feature

grades K, 2, 4 (11:00-1:30pm). Field Day wouldn't be possible without the generosity of our

wonderful parents. We are seeking volunteers to help run the events as students rotate through

them. Volunteers have the option of helping with one or both Field Days. The rain date will be

Friday, May 17th.

Please click on the link below to volunteer. We greatly appreciate it!

Third Grade - Science For Everyone (www.scienceforevery1.com)

Michael Green on behalf of “Science for Everyone” was once again back at

Northwood to wow our 3rd graders with science experiments and tricks. We had so

much fun learning about the movement of air, the absorbing power of Sodium polyacrylate and how to create a fire tornado. Thank you to the PTA for providing

funding for what is probably our favorite assembly of the year.

First grade is fantastic! Last week, we traveled to Warbington Farms for a special field

trip. At the farm, students pet, fed and learned all about baby goats! They also went on a

hayride where they saw cows and goats grazing in the fields. Finally, students learned how

farmers grow strawberries and the cultivation of the plots. Students loved picking their own pint

of strawberries to take home and share with their families.

At the farm, we truly enriched our current curriculum with hands-on learning and

firsthand experiences. Students discussed how to classify animals and learned about animal

needs and habitats, just like we are doing in science. We researched and wrote informational

reports about farm animals in writing, and we saw several of the animals we learned about at

the farm. We even reviewed parts of a plant and plant needs, too!

All the 1st grade teachers were so impressed by our students and proud of each of them

for the way they represented Northwood.

Library books are due!

Friday, May 3rd is the last day for student checkouts from the media center. All books need to

be returned by Friday, May 10th. If your child has a lost or damaged book, please take care of

the fee as soon as possible. Any student who has an overdue book will receive a notice on

Monday, May 13th.

Medication Pick-Up

Please remember to pick up any medication that your child has in the clinic by Thursday, May 23rd. Any

medication (prescription and non-prescription) left in the clinic by the end of the school day will be disposed

of. New medications with new Medication Authorization forms and/or Health Care Plans need to be completed

every school year. These forms are available in the clinic or on the school website.

We are in need of donated clothing, especially sizes 7 and above. Also, Field Day is fast approaching, so please have

your child bring a change of clothing. There are water activities and each year the clinic is unable to provide

changes of clothing for so many students.

Textbook Collection

As the school year ends, we will be collecting all student textbooks. Please

be on the lookout for any textbooks that your child has brought home. If

you come across any textbooks at home, please be sure to send them into

school so your child’s teacher may account for them.

Any missing or damaged textbooks must be paid for before your child receives his/her report

card, test scores, etc. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.

Deadline extended for Reading Counts program!

Anytime is a great time to read, read, read! The deadline has been extended to May 5th, 2019 for the Reading Counts program. Many of our readers are so close to earning another ribbon or plaque, we wanted to give them a few more days to take book quizzes. If your child has read a book, please encourage him/her to take the book quiz by May 5th.

If you are interested in checking your child’s progress in the Reading Counts program, simply have them log into their launchpad account to access the Reading Counts program. Click the “check your progress” button and this will generate a report on the quizzes your child has taken (be sure to disable pop up blocker to allow report generation).
