To Celebrate or not to Celebrate

Banned during the New Order era, the Chinese Lunar New Year (Imlek) is now a fixture in the national calendar, this year being held on February 10, and although it is celebrated by less than 5 percent of the population, the whole country gets the day off. For those who don’t celebrate the Lunar New Year, basically it involves a lot of family get-togethers and kids getting envelopes full of cash from aunts they probably meet once a year. Then there are roads of Chinatown or Chinese populated areas being closed to make way for the Barongsai - a four to six meter dragon-like puppet operated by three or four men - which is believed to bring luck to anywhere it passes. The Barongsai act attracts many people, including those who don’t celebrate Imlek.

As Imlek has now become an accepted part of the Jakarta scene, what about Valentine’s day?

While some couples get to go to romantic dinners, some are actually against the idea of people taking part - even banning Valentine’s day. The main objection? It might lead teenagers or unmarried couples to being promiscuous, taking in a “love overdose”.

The idea is not about the pros or cons of Valentine’s Day, whether it promotes people to be more loving to others or whether it’s a danger to society - the general society stance is simply “I don’t care about the issue”. This may be due to the fact that the majority of people don’t show affection in that mushy-gushy kind of way. Frankly speaking, Valentine’s Day unfortunately is not as popular as what the many dining venues would have us believe. If the 14th was on a weekend perhaps it could do some good for the local economy, but in the end, I think the point is that it really doesn’t hurt either way. To show someone your affection is good any day of the week, no matter if it’s Feb 14 or any other date, and as we all know around here, any excuse for a party is a good one. So, celebrate it or not it’s here to stay and we may as well enjoy it while we can.

Happy Valentine’s Day everyone!

Grimes or Claire Boucher (her real name) was born in 1988. Grimes, as an artist, a musician and a film director and a Canadian, started experimenting with music since she was in college, where she was occupying herself in electronic and industrial music worlds. In 2010, she launched her first album titled Geidi Primes. Her musical style, as the critics say, was a combination of vocal elements mixed with various other elements ranging from industrial and electronic, to pop, hip hop, RnB and even medieval music. Her next few albums were Halfaxa (2010) and Visions (2012). The latter one was designated as “One of the Most Impressive Album of the Year” by the New York Times. Grimes will be performing in Indonesia in Jagorawi Golf Course on March 16.

Aston International announced that the company has renamed itself to Archipelago International. This new corporate legal entity will serve as the group’s umbrella organization and be the name of the hotel management company behind all of its existing and upcoming hotels

and resorts. While the Aston label continues to grow other brands such as the select service Fave Hotels and the new four- star lifestyle Alana Hotels, which is due to open its first Indonesian Hotel in Seminyak, Bali in February this year. Archipelago International managed hotels range from select service to five-star hotels and luxury villas and operates under the hotel brands: Grand Aston, Aston, Aston City, Crimson, Quest, favehotels, NEO, Alana and Kamuela.

One cannot possibly claim to have never heard of Dash Berlin if you’re into dance music. Born Jeffrey Sutorius, he has performed in Indonesia on several occasions. His career started when he found his passion for music by playing drums after having been introduced to the instrument by his father, who was a drummer himself in a jazz band. Working in a vinyl record store inspired Dash to shift towards electronic music. This avid collector of trance vinyl records kicked off his DJ career with big names such as Sven Vath and Sander Kleinenberg as his inspiration. In 2009, Dash won the IDMA Award in the “Best High Energy Track” category. A year after that, he was nominated to be the “Best European DJ” at IDMA. He was also in the DJ Mag world top 15. He also was honored by being named the “Highest New Entry” DJ Mag Top 100 Award and now is currently ranked at #7.

At the end of last year, Dash was a nominee at the “Tunisia Music Award” and he was just announced to be performing at the Ultra Music Festival in February this year. His name was also included in the “A State of Trance 600” tour series. All this fame and recognition caught the attention of Club Voyeur, Illigals, Jakarta who are bringing him to Indonesia on February 8.

There are always new found talents in the ever-changing world of music waiting to be discovered and heard by a wider audience. One of them is a group called Erka. This group consists of Koca (vocal), Rey (Lead Guitar), Dafi (Rhythm Guitar), Yogi (Bass) and Erik (Drum). The solidity and brotherhood formed amongst the personnel are not only due to their long friendships, but also due to the similar vision and mission towards music that they share and also their imagination and creativity that keeps them on top of hurdles that they face along the way. Just as the media likes to use the first 100 days as a test of a newly elected politician’s mettle, it also likes to slap catchy labels on

them. Some local media have already started to refer to the capital’s governor, Joko (“Jokowi”) Widodo, as “Jakarta’s Obama”, partly due to his somewhat thin frame and facial resemblance to the US president but also because of his perceived commitment towards the needs of ordinary people.

The phrase “baptism of fire” has been in use in

English since the early part of the 19th century and originally meant a soldier’s first experience under fire in battle. In Jokowi’s case it has taken on a somewhat ironic flavour because his “baptism” (literally, a religious ceremony in Christianity that involves water) has not been of fire but the catastrophic flooding that has hit the capital in recent weeks.

A breach of the West Flood Canal on Jan 17 at Jl. Latuharhari, Menteng, produced an unstoppable torrent of brown, muddy water that made its

Governor Jokowi’s 100th dayin office is a watery“baptism of fire”.

way to Hotel Indonesia (HI) roundabout and also caused the flash flooding of the basement car parks at Plaza UOB on Jl. Thamrin, where two cleaning service workers drowned.

You have probably already looked at aerial photos of HI roundabout inundation: Seen at some distance from above, the chaos at ground level is lost against a brown, watery background, the roundabout and its approach roads taking on an eerily beautiful appearance, like an enormous flower with huge brown petals.

Repair of the canal breach therefore became a matter of both strategic importance and national pride. The photo sequence shows how well a repair was carried out by Army personnel working together with contractors, as just over three days separate the first and third shots. It was no easy engineering task, either – a bit like trying to repair a tap without having the luxury of being able to turn off the water at the mains beforehand, and all at a semi-industrial scale. Given Jokowi’s now well-known accessibility to the media, he was interviewed live on TV at the breach site, thereby intensifying the pressure on him to deliver a quick fix. He has also pledged to re-examine the permits given to buildings constructed on land within the city that was originally supposed to serve as green areas or water catchments.

Wet weather could well continue for at least another month so the threat of flooding in the capital remains. Longer-term solutions will not be easy, for the reality is that as much as 40 per cent of Jakarta lies below sea level, while destruction of mangroves has left the city vulnerable to high-tide flooding from the sea on its northern side.

To the south, forested uplands that serve as 13 water catchment areas are being degraded by development at an alarming rate, which means rainwater cannot be absorbed locally and therefore tends to head straight for Jakarta, where some urban rivers or canals inevitably burst their banks. Jokowi has therefore ordered the construction of 100,000 infiltration wells across the city over the next five years to boost the city’s ability to absorb the runoff at times of heavy rainfall.

Any realistic, sustainable approach to dealing with the city’s vulnerability to flooding will therefore require cooperation between local governments – not just in Jakarta but West Java and Banten provinces too, as well as central government coordination. While Jokowi is confronting the problems in Jakarta as best he can, these are also testing times for others. (Jim Read)

Sara travels a lot these days across all the major cities in Indonesia. Almost every weekend she’s out there somewhere and she’s either gigging or found shooting for the TV program she currently co-hosts. Amongst all this she recently had the chance to slow down, spending her down time completing a new song featuring Urban Vibe. And now, while we know that Sara is in the process of writing new songs, the super new news is that she’s also working on the SnM duo project with Melanie Subono.

What albums are you into at the moment?Oh, I have been playing both Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream and Linkin Park’s A Thousand Suns a lot lately. Those and only those, nonstop!

What was the first record you bought—any interesting story behind it?It was Debbie Gibson’s Electric Youth! So old school! I was still in elementary school at the time so, as you can imagine, I had to save almost all of my pocket money to get it and it took me so long. Oh, it felt like forever, but when I was finally able to afford it, I was one happy little girl.

What are your all-time favourite albums? Why?Hmmmm… I love lots of different genres of music but if I really have to name them I’m going to have to narrow it down to Alanis Morissette’s Jagged Little Pill because I love the lyrics; Linkin Park’s Hybrid Theory and Meteora because, even though I only listened to them in the beginning because I thought that Mike Shinoda was hot, after I listened over and over again, I fell in love with the music and how they wrote their lyrics. Next up would be The Corrs’ Talk on Corners because, well, who doesn’t love the Corrs?! And now, Katy Perry’s Teenage Dream. I’m so in love with her! She inspires me to write most of my lyrics.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?Ummm… None.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?Lara Croft, for sure.

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? I’m reading Danur & Maddah at the moment, written by the Indonesian writer/singer/songwriter Risa Saraswati. Score? A perfect 10!

What new movie should people see? Why?Nothing else but The Possession! But this recommendation is strictly for horror movie fans. You know, I believe that I have this sixth-sense in me, that I see “things” so this movie managed to scare the hell out of me! Guess I’m hoping it’ll scare the hell out of you too!

What song do you choose to start your weekend?“Let’s Groove” by Earth, Wind & Fire.

And the song you choose to end your weekend?“Wide Awake” by Katy Perry. I’ve mentioned her name a lot here, haven’t I?

Finally! That’s the reaction most of our followers when we announced on our Twitter that the Japanese high street brand, Uniqlo, is finally

going to open their first store in Indonesia. Indeed, the retail scene in our country will be very exciting this year with the arrival of some new international brands. I’m sure you’ve heard of the big names that will make their way here: H&M, Sephora, Benefit Cosmetics and Victoria’s Secret, which just opened their first store in Plaza Senayan this week, the biggest in South East Asia. Well, with the fast-growing economy and the size of our middle class which is getting larger and larger, it’s not that surprising Uniqlo is included in the list of brands eager to give more shopping alternatives to Indonesian consumers.

Those of you who have traveled to Singapore must be familiar with this brand that belongs to Fast Retailing Group, the leading global Japanese retail holding company. Uniqlo is famous for offering good-quality, casual and basic items at an affordable price. It has been confirmed by Uniqlo Indonesia that they will be bringing these items at more or less the same price as Singapore. So really, there’s no more reason to shop there when their store is open!

As an example, Uniqlo leggings and jeggings, that fit nice and gives you slimmer silhouette, will retail for 249k. Their premium linen shirts will be priced the same too and I have seen these shirts in real life, they are really good quality! One of my favorites from Uniqlo is their AIRsm line, made from ultra-fine fibers that regulate the circulation of air, giving you a cool and “sweat-free” effect when wearing it. I was so excited to know that the AIRism tank tops will be available here for 99k a piece! If you’re a fan of their UT line (stands for Uniqlo T-shirts), these will also be available in a wide range of choices; from Disney to Snoopy to Hello Kitty, and will start from 129k.

Now here comes the big question: when will it open and where is the store going to be located? The folks at Fast Retailing Group were quite mysterious about the answer. All we were told was that there will be a Uniqlo’s Fashion Night Out event on February 13 and the store location will be revealed then. However, rumor has it that Uniqlo’s first store will most likely be opened in Kota Kasablanka, though we are unable to confirm whether this is true or not.

Anyway, regardless of the “mystery”, are you excited about this news? Which items will you be getting first when Uniqlo finally opened its store?

A much anticipated brand has finally made its appearance here. I saw the construction, site plastered with “Victoria’s Secret Coming Soon”

in front of it months ago. So I was beyond ecstatic when I found out that it was open for the public since last Friday! If you have been to the United States, I’m sure Victoria’s Secret is one of the places you spend money to buy “oleh-oleh”. If you haven’t been there, I’m sure you’ve known about it or used the products by getting “oleh-oleh” from friends or buying them through pre-order in our forum.

The Victoria’s Secret in Plaza Senayan is actually the biggest in South East Asia. True, it doesn’t carry what it’s famous for: the bra, just like the other Victoria’s Secrets when they start in new markets. Maybe the cost of retail space here in South East Asia has something to do with that or maybe they want to keep the raciness down when they first begin. But don’t be sad, the store actually has a lot to offer.

The whole body care range is available for 149k. You can also find the perfume bar, and the panties! In addition to that, there are also all kinds of pouches, in every shape and size to store all of your travel toiletries and makeup stuff. Oh, it also has cute little goodies such as passport holders, key rings, iPhone/iPad/Blackberry cases, sunglasses, makeup, bags, and suitcases. Ok, the last two are not necessarily “little” but you get the idea. Next time you want to give yourself a little something something, or to buy gifts for any occasion or even for your “seserahan”, you know where to go. Victoria’s Secret is in the second floor of Plaza Senayan, between Ted Baker and Guess Accessories.

i t’s amazing how in some cases less equals so much more, and it would be hard to get any less than the sparse arrangements of Californian Joy Williams and Tennessee dandy John Paul White AKA The Civil Wars. It’s a suitably apt name for

a band where both members actually look like they have just time traveled forward from 1860s Kentucky, but according to their blog, the group’s name also refers to “the good, the bad, and the ugly of relationships”.

Released over a year ago but only recently finding its way into my music collection, the double Grammy-winning “Barton Hollow” is, for the most part, simply a case of two fantastically talented people modestly jamming to create an album that feels so much more than the sum of its parts. Their voices weave around each other in the kind of ‘are they/aren’t they together’ tension that worked so well for the White Stripes. (They’re not by the way, Williams is married to the band’s manager, but with exchanges like; “she’s the sea I’m sinkin’ in/he’s the ink under my skin” on “Birds of a Feather”, I’d imagine her hubby is watching them like a hawk.

With only the occasional plucked double bass and mournful fiddle for company to add subtle depth and texture, there’s otherwise no frills or over the top production tweaks - just two voices and a guitar that go together like whiskey in a tumbler – wistful introspective little ditties like “20 Years” and “Poison & Wine” are the prime examples. Only once do we see the pair bare their teeth with the foot stomping title track “Barton Hollow” providing a bit of racy grit to break up the proceedings. “I’m a dead man walkin’,” howls White, obviously relishing the chance to dust off his steel guitar and give it some welly.

Meanwhile, bonus track and album closer (and, if I may say so, Jacko’s best song EVER) “Billie Jean” is an inventive spin on the king of pop’s 1982 classic that shows just how effective it can be when a song is covered in a totally different style to the original. A stunning debut, I have a sneaky suspicion we’re going to hear a lot more great things from this pair in the very near future.

atifah Kodijat Marzoeki portrays an Indonesian pianist that has seen pretty much everything in her life. Born in 1928, she is a

pioneer in piano teaching in Indonesia and without her pedagogy books, Indonesia might not have as many pianists today. Not only that, but Latifah has also trained so many renowned pianists such as Oie Tjong Lie (Rudy Laban), Sutarno Sutikno, Iravati Soediarso and many others.

She was one of the piano teachers at the Music Education Foundation (Yayasan Pendidikan Music) – a 60-year-old music institution in Indonesia. This indo pianist (half Dutch and half Indonesian) is also known to have a “partner in crime” when performing on stage. It is another indo pianist called Charlotte Panggabean who always companied Latifah Kodijat on stage and together they give killer performance on four hands compositions on piano.

In January 2012, maestro pianist Ananda Sukarlan invited Latifah Kodijat (now 85 years old) to participate in the recent Jakarta New Year’s Concert. The theme of “pianississimo” was chosen by Ananda Sukarlan to showcase an event on piano and pianists of three generations and is dedicated to all piano lovers in Indonesia. Below is TBJ recap on our quick chat with Indonesia’s oldest pianist:

What made you decide to be a pianist?Actually, I have never had any wish to be a pianist. I am not ambitious nor having the aspiration to be one. I just know that I have a big fondness to play the piano.

Who inspired you?It is none other then my teachers: Hennie Geist, Tine Droop and Jaap Spaanderman. However I was also much inspired from Karen Kushner (an internationally acclaimed pianist). I read her motto from Clavier magazine in 1999 and since then I realized I should spread my wisdom and teach.

Here is the quote of Karen Kushner: “I have often said that if one can teach, one is morally obligated to do so. We teachers are the guardians of the golden thread of the collective knowledge of those who taught us. We bear the responsibility of passing that knowledge on to further the growth of our art and keep it alive.”

What is your biggest challenge in your career during your time?My main challenge is to make all piano teachers who use my book (Piano Kawanku 1, 2 and 3) can understand the objectives and practice it accordingly. It is necessary to read all the introductions and suggestions given on each song as well as the footnote for teacher on every end of the book. The teacher here needs to be able to explain what it is all about before teaching how to do it.

What made you start writing these books of pedagogy? The fact is we need one to fill in the gap and to assist us teachers. Thus guidelines in piano education are no longer ignored.

Who are your favorite composers?Johan Sebastiaan Bach and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

What is the definition of a great pianist?A great pianist is one who can go “under the skin” of the composer and perform with such expression and interpretation that can touch the audience; it’s not only about technicalities or tempo!

Not long after finishing the Jakarta New Year’s Concert, Latifah Kodijat was hospitalized. Luckily

she is better now. Without a doubt, Latifah’s undying passion for piano and education in Indonesia is a true-life dedication. Indonesia is so fortunate to have Latifah Kodijat Marzoeki.

Meanwhile, Italian pianist Christian Leotta is coming to town. This award-winning Italian virtuoso pianist with a vast repertoire is recognized for being the youngest pianist since Daniel Barenboim to perform and record all 32 Beethoven Piano sonatas. Graduating from Milan Conservatory under Mario Patuzzi and Karl Ulrich Schanbel, Christian Leotta was invited by the Italian Institute of Culture Jakarta and will be performing at Gedung Kesenian Jakarta on this coming February 11th.

Make sure not to miss his piano recital.

a siblings’ Mission, an apollo’s Mission, a Young Couple’s Mission

Hansel and Gretel are back as adults and they’re no longer two children strewing bread crumbs along a path, they’re bounty hunters who exterminate witches. Along the way, they finally encounter a witch who is preparing for the Blood Moon ritual which could reveal some very interesting tales of their origins and why Hansel and Gretel have had such a different life.

Hansel (Jeremy Renner, The Bourne Legacy) dan Gretel (Gemma Arterton, Quantum of Solace) kini telah menjadi dewasa dan akan membalas dendam. Mereka berdua berjanji

Three astronauts who are on a mission to place sensors on the Moon are faced with life-threatening extraterrestrial life on their way back home to Earth. In this movie, it will be revealed why Apollo 18’s astronauts never came back. Having been infected by aliens, the three were instructed not to go home, only to find themselves facing inevitable death. This found-footage style movie is a must-watch!

A new year, a new found love and a new home. Well, that sounds pretty good, but what if new problems arise involving ghosts? Malcolm and Keisha, a young couple, find themselves in their new house with an unwelcome guest. The Wayans brothers are at it again and this film is sure to parody the multiple horrow flicks that find a new family in a haunted house. Expect some over the top laughs and shock humor which the Wayans brothers are famous for.

Sebuah pasangan muda, Malcolm Johnson (Marlon Wayans, G.I.

Jakarta already has tons of places serving Padang food, but this eatery takes it to another level!

“Maknyus” is a catchphrase invented by one of Indonesia’s leading food expert, Bondan Winarno (AKA Pak Bondan). Loosely translated, it means ‘outstandingly delicious’, as he often uses it while describing a dish on his TV program. After successfully opening his ‘Kopitiam Oey’ restaurants, he turned his focus to the popular Padang (West Sumatran) fare and created Bofet Maknyus.

The small eatery only has a handful of tables, with minimal décor. There’s no menu here; but you can see the signature dishes on the wall. While most Padang restaurants bring out a myriad of food to your table right after you are seated, at Bofet Maknyus the dishes are made to order and brought to your table fresh from the kitchen.

Padang food is famous for its rich taste of succulent coconut milk and spicy chili. Padang (and most of Sumatran) cuisine demonstrate influences from India and the Middle East, which are heavy in curry sauces with coconut milk, and also a heavy mix of spices.

There are only less than 10 dishes to choose from here, but you’d better believe that they are all mouth-watering! Let’s start with the Soto Padang (18k); a hearty soup with tiny pieces of beef jerky, with a broth rich with herbs and spices. This dish comes with a Perkedel (mashed potato patty, mixed with spices) and a fluorescent pink cracker!

Next up, the Pangek Baluik (12k). Made with eels, it’s a specialty from Batusangkar. The red hue of the curry adds a certain appetizing appeal.

The Dendeng Baraciak (22k) is another wonderful dish. A typical fare from Solok, the small pieces of beef jerky are cooked in oil, along with shallots, tomatoes, and chilies. It’s a

mouth-watering mélange of ingredients, and we noticed that the oil itself became really fragrant and tasty.

The Ayam Langkueh (14k) also made it to our table; deep fried chicken covered in a type of floss made mostly with lengkuas or galangal and other spices. It’s another dish from the city of Padang.

As for the vegetable dishes, the Sayur Pakis (7k) and the Gulai Cubadak (5k) are simply tasty. The former is made from fern leaves, while the latter is made with nangka or jackfruit.

There are a couple of standouts at Bofet Maknyus for us: First, the Sate Daguang Daguang (22k). It may look like a typical Sate Padang, but this one is from the town of Payakumbuh. The sate is made of beef, but you should also have the ones made with ox tongue! You can never go wrong with barbecued meat and when you add the rich and flavorsome sauce, it is just superb!

Second, the Gulai Itiak Lado Mudo (18k); a delectable duck curry dish from Kotogadang. The sauce is made with green chillies and other spices. No need for further explanations; to die for!

Whoa… We actually forgot to order the Rendang Kapau here! But then again, we already had tons of delicious food on our table. An online poll by CNN International in 2011 chose Rendang as the number one dish of their ‘World’s 50 Most Delicious Foods’ list. Well, that’s at least one reason to return to Bofet Maknyus!

This simple restaurant is an excellent addition to the many Padang joints in the capital. Maknyus, indeed! (Budi Iskandar)

365 Eco Bar is quite possibly Jakarta's one and only eco-friendly bar. The main

building structure and most of the furniture were built from recycled materials. Most of the building was made with discarded shipping containers, which makes a striking façade. And you just can’t miss the huge timer, counting down the number of days until the next New Year. Ozone-friendly air conditioning is also used, keeping things green. And speaking of which, the place is surrounded by a huge tree and lots of plants around, making it a nice escape from the hustle and bustle of the main road.

365 eco Bar JL. KEMANG RAYA NO. 6JAKARTA SELATANPH.: (021) 719 1032OPENING HOuRS: 5 PM – LATETWITTER: @365_ECOBAR

365 Eco Bar has a reputation as an eco friendly place to hang out and chill with a drink or two. The mix of DJs and live bands are also drawing the hip and happening young crowd by the hundreds on most evenings. And now they are putting an extra effort on the food items which is always a major plus point.

We visited 365 Eco Bar recently on an early evening after the rain. The traffic was rather horrid (as usual) around that time, so it was nice to be able to stop and just relax, especially on a balmy night. The cooler air seemed to invite us to sit on the comfy chairs outside.

We ordered some light bites to start with. The Fried Ravioli (50k) is a dish of little ravioli morsels filled with spinach, and accompanied by a tasty red dipping sauce. The Herbs and Spices Grilled Chicken Taco (50k) actually looks more like a tortilla wrap. But hey, what’s in a name? It was a delightful dish, we didn’t really want to be bothered with the details. We devoured these appetizers in no time flat!

The kitchen staff are really paying more attention to the food, and it clearly shows. The Thai Curry Shrimp (67k) really hit the bullseye. The scrumptious shrimps are covered with thick, tasty curry, and served with some mashed potato. Fabulously flavorsome! Other noteworthy dishes that you should try are the Grilled Salmon with Pineapple Chutney (85k) or the Beef Basil Bowl (70k).

As for dessert, the Dark Chocolate Mousse (40k) and the Coffee Tiramisu (40k) were pure indulgences.

Now, this place is known for some potent concoctions. The Home made infusions (75k each) are quite popular here. The Lychee Vodka and the Sweet Tea & Honey Vodka infusions were our picks that evening.

Some signature cocktails also made their way to our table. We particularly enjoyed the Royale Coffee (85k); black coffee with brandy, and the potent Adios M.F. (140k), the California style ‘Long Island’.

Another specialty here are the Cocktails by the Bottle (325k). There are ice-chilled classic favorites, made for four people, and include the Cosmopolitan, Mojito, or Long Island.

Teetotalers or designated drivers won’t be left out. The Virgin Cocktails (43k each) like the Virgin Mojito, Virgin Colada, or the Green Ice Blues Kiwi Smoothie are very refreshing.

At any day of the year, 365 Eco Bar is a great place to chill out and have a drink with friends. But with the food better than ever, it is now a cool foodie destination too! (Budi Iskandar)
