It seemed only yesterday that we were at a New Year’s party somewhere, counting down to usher in the year 2013. And before you know it, we’re already at the start of the first “ber” months; September. For many, September is a wake-up call to get into high gear and accomplish those goals and dreams set out at the beginning of the year. After all, there are only four months left in 2013, so take a moment now to think back and reflect on what you have and haven’t done.

Here at The Beat we’re proud to have accomplished many exciting things so far this year, however we believe there is still much to do. One of the most important things we strive to improve is our personal relationship with you, our readers. We hope The Beat has done a good job in feeding our readership with information on all things entertainment in this city, and if you would like to see something in The Beat, simply drop us an email at [email protected] or tweet us at @thebeatmagazine. We want to hear from you and get to know what is important for your entertainment pleasure! After all we are nothing without our faithful readers. Here’s another idea; if you want to meet us and many Beat readers and believers in person, come join us at our monthly Beat BBQ Sunset Party - next one is at Liquid Exchange September 29. Simply like us on Facebook [The Beat Jakarta] to get the latest info on the BBQ and other Beat magazine contents! Or just go online to www.beatmag.com for the lot.

September this year also marks the return of the entertainment scene after a short pause during Ramadhan. One of the biggest shows this month is Korea’s hottest girl band export Girl’s Generation, or often called SNSD, who will be in town on the 14th - we received word that the most expensive ticket category was sold out in a matter of minutes.

Every year during Ramadan, the traditional market at Tanah Abang, Central Jakarta, spills out into the street as vendors seek the best pitches and buyers engage in a frenzied search for bargains in the lead-up to the biggest Muslim holiday of the year.

The result is a chaotic mish-mash of motorcyles, pedestrians, bajaj (three-wheeled motorized rickshaws), minivans and hapless motorists, all caught up in a black hole that becomes the traffic jam from hell. The photos show only the visuals but it doesn’t take too much to imagine the sweltering, fume-filled air and the cacophony of a thousand souls all competing for the same square metre of territory.

For some, this is Jakarta’s equivalent of Dante’s Inferno, for others, the ideal opportunity to shop at the last minute for an inexpensive Idul Fitri outfit or gifts for family or friends. The contrast with the relative peace and quiet that settles over the area after the Idul Fitri holiday could not be more stark.

Tanah Abang’s history as a traditional marketplace dates back three centuries and it is still the largest textile market in Southeast Asia. The area in general has acquired a reputation for lawlessness and the open flouting of regulations designed to create an element of order in the locality. Smuggled electronic items are openly sold from the pavement in broad daylight, for example.

Bringing some semblance of order to Tanah Abang will represent as big a challenge to Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo and his deputy Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama as dealing with the capital’s traffic congestion and flooding problems. They have made a start on the thorny problem of relocating unauthorised traders, so they deserve encouragement for each small success they might achieve on the long journey ahead of them. (Jim Read)

This very minute Adrian is juggling promos for his latest album Karat & Arang as well as performing, writing new songs, rehearsing and planning gigs with a punk rock band he joined a few months ago called Citizen Useless. He’s still working out plans with Raksasa, a hard rock band that he’s also involved in. Other than that? He’s cruising with his wife and their baby boy.

hat music are you into at the moment?Lately I've been dumb-struck whenever I'm asked this question but then I realise that it's because I don't actually listen to music anymore. It's partially because I don't have time to sit down and listen but I'm also finding that listening to music has become confusing. Do we listen for entertainment? Or do we measure ourselves against certain qualities in it? Try to draw inspiration from it? Or is it just background music while we wash the dishes or something? Most times I end up studying any music I listen to, and that's usually on YouTube and, whilst listening, I try to learn how other musicians do their job. Having said that, there are a rare few that directly resonate with me, get right to the core. Late as it may be, I've just gotten into Social Distortion again and through almost every album, I find myself realising that Mike Ness is soul-deep.

The last album I actually purchased was Burgerkill's Venomous, because once in a while, you get a metal album that has it all—brains, guts, and difference. Lana Del Rey is alright, she's fake soul, but well-thought out. Kinda reminds me of Marilyn Manson, drawing Americana references in a made-up personality. Not too crazy about her cover of Leonard Cohen's "Chelsea Hotel" though.

What was the first record you bought - any interesting story behind it?This would have to be a pirate-version of The Best of KISS, way back in the eighties. I must've been in the third grade or something and had just gotten into Western music after having graduated from the pre-requisite Beatles education that your parents feed you. I got curious about KISS when my mum told me they were just like the Beatles only crazier! That got me searching. Then I came across "I Was Made For Loving You" in some bootleg Top of the Pops video compilation. Wowed by their appearance, I bought the album, and discovered their music to actually be smoother than The Beatles' mono recordings. From then on, it was KISS all the way! ...until I discovered Queen.

What are your all-time favourite albums? Why?Oh, dude, this kills me. A lot of records have been a favourite of mine, and I really can't pick only a few. I can find the qualities in most music I listen to, then change my mind as soon as I'm turned on to something else. So I really don't know about all time. You gotta be bored with it once in a while, right? Besides, there is a lot more music out there that I haven't discovered yet, and any of that may be another hit with me. I really don't know.

What was the worst record you ever purchased?Well, there have been a few. There have been some from musician's I already knew, and some from unknown artists because I'd just go ahead and buy it thinking it'd be good. I bought Bjork's Gling-Gló, a recording of her in a swing-band format doing, if I'm not mistaken, some Jazz standards or Latin stuff. I don't know—it just didn't do it for

me. I love her other albums, though. And of course, there were a whole bunch of others, those albums you buy because they are on sale. I couldn't ever resist buying those and most have turned out as dust collectors, even though I occasionally found a gem.

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?I don't think I wanna think that far, I don't know how life's going to be after I die. Besides, I like my life now, good or bad. We need the bad times to know the good, right? If I could choose, maybe I'd like to be someone with more patience and less fear. Maybe I could go farther that way, but then again, I could end up in a cubical workspace sharpening pencils, who knows?

What book are you reading now and what's the score (1-10)? Jughead's Double Digest from Archie Comics. Pure easy-reading brain breeze. I kinda need it right now. It's just a light-weight comic with a lot of 50s settings and fashion. It's a five, but who cares?

What new movie should people see? Why?I haven't seen a new movie in a long while. Maybe Lawless, but I don't know if I'd recommend it to anyone. To me, a movie doesn’t have to be good, as long as it's got some sort of offbeat sense to it there's a chance that I'll like it. Appaloosa is one of them, I guess. And I usually like what the Coen Brothers do. Their remake of True Grit is pretty cool.

What music do you choose to start your weekend?Anything my wife puts on! Weekend is family time for me and I can't make them listen to Son House, or Marduk, or The Clash. If my son gets cranky, Mozart for babies it is.

And music you choose to end your weekend?Maybe some classical, or Ryuichi Sakamoto. The end of a weekend is actually a start for me. Then I'll browse YouTube for some gear knowledge or uploaded concerts.

TBJ: KEMANG

The Beat divides Jakarta into three main entertainment areas; Kemang, Kota and anything in between which we call Central. Amongst the three areas, the one that is it is the most centralised and convenient is Kemang, as visitors can very much roam

the streets by foot. Kemang is synonymous with expat and expat living, where on any given day or night many bule (white men or women) would walk the streets to walk their dog, jog or simply do groceries. This is a common fact as Kemang has become a favorable area for expats to live in. Some people would even associate the vibe in

Kemang to that in Kuta or Seminyak in Bali.

If thIs Is youR fIRst tIme to JakaRta, and hungRy foR enteRtaInment, you’Re defInItely at the RIght page.

so what to do heRe?

LunchAs we mentioned above Kemang is the home to many expats, which then attracts restaurateurs to open up a variety of international themed restaurants. Many of the restaurants in Kemang are owned, operated and cooked by people who know traditional gourmet cuisine be it Middle Eastern, Western or Asian. One of my favorites is the authentic Italian restaurant

Mamma Rosy in Jalan Kemang Raya 58. If you want to have a go at local cuisines, opt for Pawon Solo on Jalan Kemang Raya 75B. For delicious yet affordable seafood we recommend D’Cost seafood. One of Kemang’s finest gourmet western food is served in 2Mad Eatery in The Broadway Kemang at Jalan Benda Raya 46.

DinnerNightime is when Kemang really comes to life, with many bright neon lights lined up on main street Kemang. From lavish restaurants to street food, Kemang has a variety of dinner options. Toscana up Jl Kemang Raya has been there over 17 years serving excellent Italian and continues getting better. Splash and Kemang Food Festival, which essentially are open air food courts (both within walking distance) are fun. Then there’s the relatively new Casa Espana Spanish tapas bar in Piccadilly Suites that has been garnering much attention. Koi restaurant in Kemang has great food and atmosphere. For Bavarian flavors, head down to Die Stube, a tavern famous for its bratwursts. To have dinner in the midst of Jakarta’s most eclectic wine selection go to Vin+ in Jalan Kemang Raya 45.

What do you fancy? There are pubs to go to such as Murphy’s Irish Pub in Jalan Bangka Raya or the famous Eastern Promise - known by its initials “EP”- an expat bar that throws wild parties and has live music out the back. For a chilled ambiance hit up Umbra in Jalan Taman Kemang where the place is cosy, and acoustic music is played by various musicians of different genres. The sophisticated crowd gathers in SHY Rooftop, and as the name implies is a bar on the rooftop of the beautiful all-glass Papillion building in Kemang Raya 45AA. For clubbers Kemang is also a haven with many clubs in the vicinity. The go-to clubs in Kemang are Triple 9, Nu China and Second Floor (SF). College kids usually fill up Venue in Jalan Kemang Selatan 2. For a chilled game of pool and live music head up to Star Deli at Kemang Selatan Raya 5. For a run-down industrial feel kind of a bar head to 365 Eco bar in Jalan Kemang Raya 6.

After all of the partying, the best place to catch a late night snack at 4am has got to be Dim Sum Inc in Jalan Kemang Raya 20A.

As one of the most renowned orchestras in Indonesia, Jakarta Concert Orchestra under its

leader and conductor Avip Priatna continues to entertain classical music lovers in Jakarta regularly. Their Indonesian Independence Day concert is always a much anticipated show however, this year’s concert was put back a month due to Lebaran celebrations this year.

Under the title of “Simfoni Untuk Bangsa 2013” (Symphony for The Nation 2013), Jakarta Concert Orchestra and Avip Priatna will endeavour to nourish our national

pride through music composed by our own Indonesian composers with extra pieces from international composers. Popular national compositions including some rare finds will be presented in fresher orchestra arrangements during the concert.

From the information that we have received, the orchestra is planning to start with a composition by Ludwig Van Beethoven, before continuing with some popular national songs, folk songs, to even works from one of our great composers Mochtar Embut including the song “With The Deepest Love from Jakarta” – that received an award in Japan.

Here’s a scary thought: what if there was no more new music? Specifically, I mean new genres. Sure there’s new bands writing new songs, but when was the last time we had a real new genre of music come into existence? Once upon a time, blues music didn’t exist until a few dudes down in the delta invented it. Rock? Arguably an evolution of the blues but basically conceived in 1940 when Les Paul nailed a few electromagnets to his guitar in the shed. And so on and so forth until the amount of unexplored sonic terrain out there has become increasingly scarce.

Luckily, people these days really are getting rather good at taking old genres and making them sound brilliant again, even if they may be from seemingly different universes. Case in point: the baggy scene of mid 80’s Madchester vs. two scruffy youths from the Sydney suburbs – namely, Jagwar Ma.

Presumably still in nappies during the heyday of The Haçienda and Factory Records, you’d think it would be easy to write off Jono Ma and Gabriel Winterfield as attempting the kind of regurgitated pastiche of a long defunct golden age of music by people who just weren’t there. However, whether Tony Wilson would approve or not is a moot point, simply because Howlin couldn’t get any more baggy than if the album came with a free pair of flares and a strip of ‘happy tabs’ tucked in the pocket.

Party starters “Uncertainty” and “The Throw” may be the closest we’ll get to seeing what the inside of Shaun Ryder’s brain looks like, while the acid rave juggernaught “Four” is straight out of an early 90s Oakenfold set. Mid way through there’s a slight shift to take in some groovy 60s scenery - “That Loneliness” and “Come and Save Me” particularly, which play out like Primal Scream hosting a jam session in Austin Powers’ loft, but it’s not long before we’re back in Salford with the glow sticks and whistles again (“Exercise”, “Man I Need”).

“Backwards Berlin” and “Somersault” signify the end of the party and the beginning of the come down, but the fun doesn’t have to stop there, just play it again from the start. And you will, because all that’s missing from this magical Manchester revival is a pair of maracas and a Bez.

Dan Ashcroft is out to get you.

Modern Myths, futuristic class struggle, and a desert car accident

This film is based on the novel written by Rick Riordan entitled “The Sea of Monsters” (2006). Percy Jackson (Logan Lerman), the son of

Poseidon, sets out on an epic journey with Annabeth (Alexandra Daddario), Grover, and Tyson to the Sea of Monsters, situated within the Bermuda Triangle. Their aim is to search for the Golden Fleece (the fleece of the gold hair winged ram) in an effort to save Camp Half-Blood’s magical borders from monsters and cure Thalia (demigod daughter of Zeus)’s poisoned pine tree. If you’re a tween (or a parent) looking for a family movie, this is going to be your best bet.

adventure, family, fantasy. director: thor freudenthal. writer: marc guggenheim (screenplay), Rick Riordan (characters, based upon the novel “percy Jackson and the olympians: the sea of monsters” written by). Cast: logan lerman, Brandon t. Jackson, alexandra daddario, leven Rambin, Jake abel, stanley tucci, nathan fillion.

We have Percy Jackson’s return as a demigod as Greek mythology mashes up with modern times. We have Matt Damon taking on inequality in this sci-fi film on class warfare. We have a French film about a femme fatale trapped with her victim at a desert pile-up in Morocco. Which of these is worthy of your hard earned time? Lets take a look. You might want to visit a local DVD shop near you to watch them, or see it on the big screen of which the schedules are available on www.21cineplex.com!

This film is about an orbiting space station where only the wealthy live in the dystopian future. In 2154, Earth has become a slum full of diseases and other overpopulation-related miseries, a con man Max DeCosta (Matt Damon) is about to change things. This film is by Neill Blomkamp who did District 9 and seems to tackle social issues much like its predecessor did with apartheid. If you loved District 9, it’s a pretty safe bet that this film will be awesome.

elysiumaction, drama, sci-fi. director: neill Blomkamp. writer: neill Blomkamp. Cast: matt damon, Jody foster, sharlto Copley, alice Braga, diego luna, wagner moura, william fichtner.

When a New York hedge fund manager, Scott Dolan (Frank Grillo) is having a honeymoon with his wife, Taylor (Jaimie Alexander) in Sahara desert, little does he realize the murderous intent of his new bride until he finds her cheating with another guy. Following a car chase and a multi-car pile-up, new characters which include a diamond smuggler, a young French woman and her baby, as well as an enigmatic stranger, are being introduced to the

audience with the help of flashbacks. The game of survival begins. We’ll be honest here, this film had horrible reviews, so if you like films that people generally hate, this might be worth a peek.

An exploration of modern icons and technical lines yields a collection of statuesque beauty and forms. Held by the grace of the artisanal beading needle, creative director Dato’ Farah Khan shifts her vision towards towering beauties, diving deep into the consciousness of the architectural greats of the modern world. Graphic silhouettes return but with their ferocity tamed. Dresses are cut at the knee or lower, and sleeved, in-line with a burgeoning new sensuality. This collection points to a refined elegance, held by longer, more body

conscious dresses. The introduction of new separates, namely the jacket and cape, are the perfect additions to master autumn’s throw-on glamour.Abstract application of hard lines and smooth contours gives this collection an architectural intensity that is both modern and wearable. Buoyed by the use of metallic hues and earth tones, the brand returns to its DNA to create a highly-disciplined and concise collection, where the collection’s panache is most found in the richness of textures, the result of the brand’s famed beading techniques.Using both high-shine and matte embellishments, this hard-edged collection is contrasted with bursts of cranberry purple and white beside gold. The “We Love” concept is reflected throughout this Desigual collection and is a genuine declaration of love for all its present and future customers. This is what they said: “We want to add something positive to their lives so that when they enter our world they feel reassured and spoilt. We want to create an emotional bond with them so that they feel closer to us. Our love is unconditional, it’s just like love should be: blind. We don’t have a “type”. We love all kinds of people and we hope that all kinds of people love us; people with different styles, with different mentalities. We want non-judgemental love. We want them to echo our battle cry La Vida es Chula, a truly universal message reflected in the three concepts that bring everything together so that it all makes sense: Sex, Fun & Love. To achieve this we have changed direction and looked to our past to identify the real essence of Desigual that makes us unique and adds value.”

This Autumn/Winter a romantic folk story flows throughout the collection. Delicate Victoriana blouses and floaty floral maxi skirts are worn with oversized faux fur stoles and enchanting rose garland headbands. Floor length day dresses in vintage inspired prints and ethereal lace have a whimsical lingerie influence, yet given a tough edge by pairing with black chunky heeled biker boots.

Stand out evening dresses in shades of pastel pink, rose gold and greys are bejewelled with ornate beading and sequins, from floor length with tassel skirts to dainty mini slips worn with metallic chain sandals. Scallop hems and decorative necklines give a beautiful boudoir finish.

Girly tailoring is key, from structured mini dresses with jewelled collars in primary brights to flirty pinafores and wide legged

jumpsuits styled with tartan check shirts. This look is completed with cut out boots adorned with intricate metal buckles and simple leather satchels in brown and berry shades.

The classic LBD is still strong. For evening elegance the off the shoulder polka dot prom is perfect for any party and for a more versatile look the leather laser cut mini can be dressed up or down to suit the occasion. When it comes to jackets and coats, it’s all about rich colours and texture. From the androgynous evening crop with delectable heavy embellishment and metal work, to the Navaho print wool coat in Autumnal tones. The oxblood soft leather Mac is a stand out piece for the season.

This Autumn/Winter Dorothy Perkins showcases three key looks: modern and cleancut day wear, opulent, embellished casual wear and statement evening wear. Daywear is kept simple with clean lines and classic shapes. A-line and pencil skirts teamed with boxy jackets and bombers are key and tailored pieces are paired with crisp shirts for a smart look. Window-pane check and geometric prints are worn together for a sleek take on the head-to-toe print trend, while monochrome combines with hues of colbalt blue, burgundy and brilliant white to create a simple colour palette. Oversized totes and structured bowler bags finish the look. For casual wear cosy knits are mixed with winter whites. Simple knits in neutral tones are given an update with embellishment and military-style motifs while silhouettes are kept lady-like with full a-line skirts.

The long line biker jacket and fur bomber are this season’s outer wear must-haves and footwear classics like the biker boot and slingback heel get a sports luxe makeover in chalk white and nude. Occasion wear embraces all things textured as faux-furs are layered with PU, sequins, lace, jacquard and metallics. Animal print and monochrome combine to create the palette for this collection. The quilted PU bomber makes for the ultimate transitional wardrobe staple while the prom dress gets an update in gold jacquard for a glamorous evening look with a twist.

When I received the private launch invitation for the new Carolina Herrera fragrance, I knew I had to pencil in the date and make it a priority

to attend the event. Carolina Herrera perfumes and I go way back: Chic by Carolina Herrera was one of the things in my ‘seserahan‘ package. Sadly there are now only a few more sprays left in it, and I’m holding onto it with my life because I’m afraid I won’t be able to find it anymore.

But other than the memory capsule that is my bottle of Chic, I also happen to be a big fan of Carolina Herrera. I’ve said it before, I want to grow old gracefully like her. Being the big fan I am, I was happy to see her in person and managed to take a picture with her during the Asia Fashion Exchange event last May. Now on to the perfume. I didn’t immediately see the perfume when I stepped in to the Hotel Mulia’s Casablanca Room, but was given a tour of five rooms instead. Each room was decorated the Carolina Herrera

way, filled to the ceiling with her favorite artwork. And what was interesting was the way each room was decorated to showcase the notes presented in the bottle. It really builds up the excitement because we were all kept guessing on how the scent and bottle would be like.

The new perfume is called Sublime, the perfect name to describe the final product. The bottle and scent really go well together. I love how it has a hint of freshness from Bergamot and the sweetness of passion flower, followed by the exquisite smell of a rose. Patchouli and leather wrap everything up to culminate in the most emotional, sensual, and passionate aura of the scent.

I think it’s safe to say that this is my current favorite perfume. It blends well with my skin and has the potential to become my signature scent. As Carolina mentioned, the perfume embodies the magical blend of qualities that only a woman possesses, so what’s not to love about this perfume?

Here are a couple of things I hate: soggy fries, armed conflict, and being told what to wear. I once got incredibly angry when a guy told me that the dress I was wearing was too short (it wasn’t), and that I looked more “elegant” in trousers than dresses. He

had absolutely no business telling me what to wear and what not to wear, and I completely flipped out. I don’t appreciate unsolicited fashion advice, and I certainly don’t like telling people what to wear (or what not to wear). Adult women should be able to wear whatever we want without being reprimanded by some irrelevant third party! That being said, the list I’m presenting below is not a “what not to wear list”– it’s just a list of fashion trends that I don’t understand. I appreciate their existence the way I appreciate theoretical physics, but my appreciating theoretical physics is not the same as my understanding of it. Maybe you can help me out with this one?

I really don’t get this. Save for Royal weddings and costume parties, I can’t imagine why it would be necessary for anyone to walk around looking like some sort of enchanted topiary fairy. But fashion has never been about what’s necessary, so at least these cranial-specific floral arrangements have the last laugh on that one.

Pros: The floral industry is reporting healthy profits at the end of every fiscal quarter.Cons: All your friends with pollen allergies will stop hanging out with you.

No.Pros: High comedic value.Cons: It’s an item of clothing going through an identity crisis: is it a pair of leggings? Is it a pair of jeans? Why is it trying to be something it can never be? What happened in its childhood that traumatized it to the point of existential haplessness? I’m not opposed to jeans or leggings, but some things are just not meant to be together! I mean, I think fried chicken and donuts are delicious, but you wouldn’t eat them at the same time, would you? (Actually, don’t answer that)

Really? Balmain charged USD 1,625 for a slashed t-shirt? The cost of one t-shirt was enough to cover my university dormitory fees for one semester. in owning a shirt from a haute couture label that attempts to capture common plebeian hardship; in a way, they’re saying that you need a lot of money to look like you don’t have any. How avant-garde, daaaaaaahling.Cons: It is worth more than the GDP per capita of Kenya.

You know what? I think once I get my hands on one of each item above, I will wear them all at once and spend the day walking around in them until I understand why they are loved by so many. Are you a fan of anything mentioned above? Let’s hang out so you can enlighten me!

The Future’s So BrightI Gotta Wear Shades(by dhnshrtn)

Anyone heading out to somewhere sunny this weekend? I’m sure you

beauty aficionados will have no trouble remembering to pack your sunscreen when you’re going to a destination with plenty of warm rays, but don’t forget that your eyes deserve the same protection from the glaring UV too! The best way to keep your peepers in primo condition is with a pair of really cute shades.

spektre

Lovingly designed and handmade in Italy since 2009, Spektre has quickly risen to become the spectacles of choice for their quirky colorful mirror lenses. They’re available in a wide variety of designs, depending o n whether you feel like channeling your inner surfer or biker. They stay true to the credo written on their website as well: “We don’t care about the market, we do what we like, and our customer has to have character and personality.”

A pair of sunglasses I’ve wanted for a really, really long time now are mirror-lensed Oakley Frogskins. I

mean, just look at these beauties:

Not only will they protect my eyes from the summertime sun, they’re also shiny and reflective enough to signal overhead aircraft and passing ships if I ever get lost at sea! What I like about Frogskins are how lightweight they are – they’re a lot lighter than their craft beer-sipping hipster cousin, the Ray-Ban Wayfarers. But we’re so spoilt for choice now there are so many sunglass manufacturers that come up with summer-ready acetate glasses with mirror lenses. Let’s go through some of my favorites!

Another Italian company with a cult following, Sunettes are wildly popular for their distinct

circular John Lennon-esque shades. A lot of people tend to shy away from circular shades because they’re unsure about the

Wow, so what is it with Italy and great shades? Is there some sort of secret sunglasses factory with a monopoly on cool glasses? Answer: Yes. A company called Luxottica is responsible for the manufacturing of so many massive eyewear brands, including Oliver Peoples, Ray-Ban, and Oakley; they also produce eyewear for designer houses such as Chanel, Miu Miu, Prada, Burberry, and much, much more. So despite being established by an Italian who already has access to a factory that churns out trendy eyewear by the truckload in his backyard, Sheriff & Cherry designer Mauro Massarotto decided to manufacture his glasses at a factory in Croatia. Their collection of wireframe and color-block acetate sunnies are great for moments on the surf or turf.

New York-based Warby Parker took the accessories world by storm when they started producing simple but stylish acetate sunglasses and optical glasses and then selling them at half the price of what people were paying for designer sunnies. Their fairly-priced wares are comparable in style and

quality to brand-name sunglasses we’re familiar with that are all produced by Luxottica. If you live Stateside, they also have a great

program where you can order the glasses you want online and try them out for free before you buy them! Wonder if something like that could ever work here in Indonesia? le specs

Here’s a brand that’s a little closer to home: Australian lensmaker Le Specs comes up with designs as cheeky as its Franglais namesake. Founded in 1979 and experiencing a red-hot comeback after a twenty-year hiatus, they come up with fresh styles that challenge conventional designs. They also frequently collaborate with fashion-forward publications, music events, and designers like Henry Holland to propagate its fun-loving youthful image.

Sariayu Martha Tilaar has released Solusi Organic Revolution Renewage, a new line offering a range of products including cleansers, toners, and foundation. Solusi is the first and so far, the

only Indonesian cosmetic line proclaiming to be organic. The purchasing power in our country is at a high, and lots of women are more aware of the importance of toxin-free cosmetics. Awareness of safe products is also widespread, encouraging us to be more cautious in selecting and purchasing our cosmetics.

The secret behind Solusi is organic grape seed extract. Grape seed contains oligomeric proanthocyanidins (OPC), an antioxidant compound that will protect the skin from free radicals and pollution. According to studies conducted at the Food Research Center in Canada, the antioxidant power of proanthocyanidins in grape seed is twenty times greater than vitamin E and fifty times greater than vitamin C. Antioxidants are great for maintaining collagen structure in the dermis for healthy, supple skin.

foundation, and two way foundation are included in the Solusi Organic Revolution Renewage range. I tried the Two Way Foundation: the product comes with a UV protector to cover hyperpigmentation on the face while moisturizing the skin and protecting it from the effects of UV rays. This two way foundation comes with a sponge in green packaging (the rest of Solusi products also have green packaging to symbolize the organic theme).

As with other two way foundations, it can be used as a powder with a dry sponge, or with a damp sponge for fuller coverage. I personally prefer using it as a powder to set liquid foundation. Since I still suffer from the occasional breakout, using this product as foundation will exacerbate my skin condition, but it’s totally fine as a powder: not too matte, not too shimmery.

Unfortunately, it comes in just two shades, Natural and Porcelain Beige. I hope in the future we will see Solusi provide a wider range of shades because Indonesian women have different skin tones and need more shades than these two. But it’s a great start to the organic revolution, and there’s no way from here but up.

Jun Njan has long established itself as one of the best restaurants in town for authentic Chinese cuisine. Since its humble beginning at Jalan Batu Ceper many, many years ago, this eatery now has more than a dozen outlets all over Jakarta, and has become a firm favorite for many of the city’s Chinese food aficionados. And right before the recent holy month of Ramadan, a new outlet was opened at Pondok Indah Mall 1. Before long, the place attracted flocks of foodies from South Jakarta and beyond with mouthwatering favorites. There are new items on the menu, too. A couple of standout dishes worth mentioning are the Sapo Kari Kepiting or Crab with Curry Sauce in a Claypot (33k/ounce), and the Ayam Rempah Wangi or Chicken with Asian Spices (58k/half chicken). These flavorful dishes celebrate the richness of Asia’s herbs and spices; both are definite must-try!

Welcome to a little piece of Hawaii in the suburbs!

Bintaro is a popular area on the edge of South Jakarta which seems to have a lot going on, especially in

the culinary department. Lots of eateries have opened up here, catering to foodies from the capital and beyond.

Aloha Terrace is a Hawaiian-influenced restaurant which opened its doors to the hungry public on May 1. As expected, the place has a laid back, beach-shack kind of vibe. Pictures of Hawaii adorn the walls of this two-storey eatery, and of course, you gotta have a surfboard or two to get that island ambiance. All that’s missing is the sea. But then again, the shoreline

in North Jakarta doesn’t exactly scream ‘tropical paradise’, does it?

The cuisine of Hawaii is a fusion of many influences brought by immigrants, particularly the American, Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, Korean, Polynesian and Portuguese. A couple of the most popular items in Hawaii are the Loco Moco and the Shaved Ice. We’ll get into them in a moment.

On a recent hot day, the place gave us a nice break from the scorching sun on our visit. And after enjoying the setting, we dived right into the starters. The Hawaiian

Poke Combo (38k) is a great sashimi-salad dish; it’s a combination of Lomi Lomi Salmon, Ahi (tuna) Poke, and Tako (squid) Poke. These three items can also be ordered on their own, if you feel like it. For a more conventional type of salad, the Aloha Terrace Special Cobb Salad (Small: 30k, Large: 50k) will do nicely.

Next up, we had the tasty Mochiko Chicken (35k) and Mahi Mahi Style Frito (40k). These are breaded chicken and mahi mahi, respectively, which can be appetizers, or accompaniments to your main course.

As we mentioned earlier, you can’t get more Hawaiian than a Loco Moco. The Original Loco Moco (48k) is a tasty combo of rice, a hamburger patty, sunny side up egg, pineapple slice, and served with your choice of Teriyaki sauce or tomato sauce. And if you feel like spicing it up a notch, go for the Loco Moco with Japanese-style Curry (60k).

The Steak Bowl (50k) is another favorite; rice and well-marinated grilled steak slices on a bed of rice and vegetables, as is the Beef Hamburger Steak (60k); hamburger steak with fried egg, sliced pineapple, and baked potato. Other notables are the grilled seafood and steak; so there is something for everyone!

As for drinks, try the Blue Hawaii (33k), Ice Green Tea Latte (23k), or Mango Frappuccino (25k). And don’t miss the Shaved Ice (7k) for dessert! You can have it with melon, strawberry, or orange syrup, or a combination of the three, called simply ‘The Hawaiian’. Simple, yet perfect!

Aloha Terrace is also open for breakfast. The Hawaiian Breakfast (38k) can provide a good start for your day; chicken or beef sausage, croissant, omelet, salad, and a choice of coffee, tea, or juice.

And another thing, ask for Hula Workshop! Yes, they do provide a nice class for you, should you want to channel the island girl (or boy) inside you.

This restaurant is a solid addition to the local food scene. No beach? No problem, ‘brah’! Just enjoy the island vibe. It’s worth the trip. (Budi Iskandar)

If you’re looking for swanky good views and fine cuisine,

this spot’s got it all.

Exodus

Located inside Kuningan City Mall on the Casablanca road, Exodus

is a new entertainment complex in Jakarta. A restaurant, a lounge, and a club occupy three floors on one side of the mall. At the time of our visit, the restaurant is the only one fully operational. We were, taken on a short tour of the other two floors. They are almost done, and based on what we saw, Exodus could become a triple threat of entertainment options in the capital. Watch this space.

Opened on July 27 this year, the restaurant is quite striking. A big wooden door

welcomes you, and once you step inside, you’ll see a large open kitchen area on your left and an elongated bar on the right. The room is dominated by the pale-colored wood of the furniture and gorgeous décor, contrasting nicely with the black ceiling. The space is bright and airy, with a stunning view of Jakarta’s skyline to boot. The huge window seating area will definitely be a hit with patrons.

There’s also a big stage on one side of the restaurant with a DJ booth next to it. We were informed by the staff that there are bands that will perform jazzy materials for

guests, and the DJs will take over later in the evening. Call up for the details of Exodus’ entertainers, if you’re into it.

The food here leans more towards Western fares. We started with the Ribs Mini Burger (75k); a trio of bite-size burgers which could be a wonderful appetizer or snack. Next up, the Spicy Tuna (80k); seared fresh tuna served with smoked beef bacon, and warm egg white scallion and jalapeño.

For the main course, we chose a couple of noteworthy dishes here. First, the Chilean Sea Bass (240k), laid on a bed

of mashed mascarpone potato, topped with beans and spinach mix, and served with a tangy tomato salsa on the side.

The Veal Osso Bucco (210k) is another delicious dish; the tender veal is served with fried crisp mushroom risotto, melted cheese, and eggplant caviar balsamic in courgettes. Visually, it may not look like much, but taste-wise, it’s delightful! The fried risotto comes as a pleasant surprise.

All you carnivores can rejoice with Exodus’ options of grilled steaks. There are Wagyu Tenderloin and Sirloin to choose from, as well as Lamb Chop and Rib Eye. A small number of grilled seafood is also available.

But if there’s one dish that you should definitely go for, it’s the one that is only available by request! It’s a signature dish created by Exodus’ Executive Sous Chef; the Wagyu Rossini (450k). Indulge yourself with the premium grade Wagyu beef, topped with rich foie gras, served with a caramelized apple, special tamarind barbecue sauce. Exquisite. Just exquisite!

For the dessert, you can’t go wrong with the Twice Baked Bittersweet Chocolate (60k). And as for drinks, we chose the Blue Margarita (95k) and the Mint Cooler (70k) for cocktails, and the Coconut Kiss (75k) was our choice of mocktail.

Exodus is a new place in town certainly worth checking out. (Budi Iskandar).

T he area around the intersection of Jalan Raya Pondok Indah and Jalan TB Simatupang might be an unlikely spot for a nice restaurant. Yes, there are Poins Square

mall and a big Carrefour supermarket, but they don’t exactly invite Jakarta’s foodies to come for the chow.

Since the opening of Mercure Jakarta Simatupang Hotel in October last year, the two food outlets there are becoming the go-to places in the Southern part of the capital. There’s Slam Skybar & Lounge, which is a great place to dine and drink on top of the hotel. It’s a good escape from the busy world below.

And speaking of busy, we visited the hotel recently on an early evening. The traffic around that area can be a bit rough but we got there fine. The Graffiti Restaurant on the lobby level provides a nice respite from all the bustle and hustle.

At first, the restaurant may look like a run of the mill chain hotel coffee shop, but this one has a certain unique edge to it. When you walk in, you’ll notice old clocks and vintage phones playfully adorning the wall on one side of the room. And they don’t call this restaurant Graffiti for nothing. On the terrace at the back, a huge graffiti piece, made by a local artist, gives a colorful and edgy touch to the place. We kinda like it. Its a nice change to the usually boring designs and décor of a hotel’s eatery.

A couple of appetizers started us off nicely. The Smoked Salmon Carpaccio (75k) is a wonderful dish of dill marinated salmon in Gribichie vinaigrette. Another good starter here is the Avocado and Shrimp (70k), which is served on Marie Louise sauce with mesclun salad. A tasty homemade cheese stick adds a nice touch to both dishes.

The Crusty Salmon (100k) is a popular main dish at Graffiti; fresh salmon served with pasta with pesto sauce, vegetables, and white wine sauce. The pasta is adequately al dente, the pesto sauce is excellent, and the salmon is just superb!

We also opted for the delicious Gratined Lamb Chop (160k), served with herbs, rosemary sauce, mashed potato and a ratatouille mix of vege's.The Maryland Spring Chicken (90k) is also worth trying. The white wine sauce compliments it well.

The Buntut Bakar Rica (110k) is another wildly popular dish at Graffiti; grilled oxtail with Menado (North Sulawesi) spices, served with steamed white rice. There are quite a lot of local favorites here which certainly please many of the restaurant’s patrons.

As for dessert, the Apple Crumble (60k) and the Blueberry Cheese Cake (65k) are wonderful choices. The former is served with brandy snap and vanilla ice cream, while the latter being served with a strawberry and peach sauce.

And what better refreshing beverages to wash it all down than the Virgin Mojito (40k) and the Duke of Orange (45k)!

Graffiti Restaurant is a popular meeting point for many businesses around the area, but it is an equally great choice for a family get together, or even for a casual date. (Budi Iskandar)
