Starbucks annual Coffee Ambassador has once again been crowned. The Coffee Ambassador Cup is a yearly event held by Starbucks Indonesia as it searches for the perfect barista that has the passion and desire to continue to improve their coffee making abilities. A total of 150 coffee masters ran the gauntlet and last September, 25 of the coffee masters were selected to become District Coffee Masters (DCM). From the DCM selection only 14 made it through to the finals going against two of last year’s DCM finalists. After a long night of answering questions and grinding and brewing coffee, in the end the Starbucks Coffee Ambassador was awarded to Yandi Maranto from Starbucks Cihampelas Walk Bandung and Ajeng Rindang from Starbucks Area 51 Pondok Indah. The two have rightfully won the honour to wear the special brown Coffee Ambassador apron and a trip to one of Starbucks coffee plantations.

DJ Bobby

HAIL FRoMJakarta, Indonesia

HAvE BEENDJ Bobby’s footsteps to DJ stardom began as a DJ instructor in Bandung. In the 90’s he moved away from his home town to the capital city, where his former students aided him in starting his musical career, helping him get gigs at clubs such as Manhattan, Atlanta, Ebony and M Club. Bobby now resides as one of Stadium’s head resident DJs, where he is highly prized by Stadium’s loyal following. Like Bobby, DJ Nash’s musical career also started academically - he was actually a music director for a modeling agency. His experience in combining tunes led him to learn the basic skills needed to become a DJ. He went on to improve his mixing abilities and spread his mastery of Progressive and Trance tunes to various clubs in Jakarta before calling Stadium his home.

ARE NoWThe two Stadium residents will be leaving their posts to hit things up at LUV’s Bar & Dine to celebrate RDJ’s anniversary on the 11th of November. The two will perform alongside LUV’s lovely resident DJs while livening things up with their specialty Progressive Trance.

HAIL FRoMJakarta, Indonesia

HAvE BEENRicky’s career started in modeling and acting, but he found his true calling after collecting vinyls of big name international DJs, and at the age of 19 decided to become a DJ. His early start led Ricky to a resident spot at Red Square Kuala Lumpur and Pharaoh Acasia Hotel Jakarta before finally calling Red Square Jakarta his resident DJ home. His hours behind the decks are undoubtedly extensive, spending most of his late nights spinning out beats for the crowd in Jakarta and even crossing the sea to stage his tracks for Zouk and Ministry of Sound in Singapore. Also a member of El’8Teen Record, Ricky was recently voted the 2nd ‘Favourite Indonesian DJ of the Year’ by Indoclubbers. As for Catherine Wilson, her natural beauty and stage presence were always going to get her a position as a model. Once signed to famed modeling agency Look Models, she has gone on to strut the catwalk, appear on the cover of various magazines, not to mention appearing on both the small and big screens. She is now developing her musical career.

ARE NoWRicky Chattaway and Catherine Wilson will combine their skills, not as models on the catwalk, but instead as a special duo with Ricky as DJ and Catherine on the mic as live PA. What will the collaboration be like? Don’t miss their performance on 11.11.11 at 11pm!

Here is just a fraction of Indonesian history and the struggle against colonization. The name Pangeran Diponegoro (Prince Diponegoro) is very famous among Indonesians as one of the nation’s

heroes from the 1800s. Born in Jogjakarta in 1785, Diponegoro is heroic for his opposition to the Dutch colonial rule and his role in the Java War.

To remember Pangeran Diponegoro and his efforts for Indonesia, an appreciation of culture and history titled ‘Java War, 1825-0000’ by Sardono W. Kusumo is going to be held from the 11th-13th of November (the birthday of the famous prince is the 11th), at Teater Jakarta in Taman Ismail Marzuki. This reinterpretation is going to show the other side of Diponegoro’s leadership towards Javanese people back then, and the rise against the Dutch colonization.

The creator of the show, Sardono W. Kusumo, is originally a classic Javanese dancer. For more than 30 years, Kusumo has been observing different cultures around the world, and on this basis, he has found his place in the world of international dance as a significant choreographer. Lately, his

interest in the changing of earth’s ecosystem has given birth to works that involve environmental awareness, such as ‘Meta Ekologi’ (1979), ‘Hutan Plastik’ (1983), ‘Hutan Yang Merintih’ (1987), and works on social and historical awareness such as ‘Detik-Detik Tempo’, ‘Passage Through the Gong’ (1993) and ‘Soloensis’ (1999). Kusumo has managed to get Iwan Fals involved in the show too, not just to sing, but also to be the storyteller and narrate Diponegoro’s autobiography.

Another interesting addition is that the opera is going to feature historian Peter Carey, the writer of ‘The Power of Prophecy: Prince Dipanagara’ and ‘The End of An Old Order In Java 1785-1855’ (2008). Carey is going to discuss a 7x14 metre copy of the painting ‘Penangkapan Diponegoro’ by Raden Saleh, which will be the background set of the opera.

Makin ke sini, keberadaan Jakarta tampaknya pelan namun pasti bertransformasi menjadi salah satu sentra konser dunia—atau minimal Asia

Tenggara.

Rapper kulit hitam asal New York, AS, gemilang berkali-kali meraih status multi platinum serta merenggut belasan penghargaan di berbagai ajang bergengsi.

• 15 November - Children of Bodom - Bulungan Outdoor• 16 November - Kenny G - Balai Sarbini• 18 November - Elton John - Sentul International Convention Centre• 6 Desember - Pitbull - Tennis Indoor Senayan• 10 Desember - Richard Marx - Gandaria City• 10 Desember - Anthrax dan Hellyeah - Pantai Karnaval, Ancol• 13 Desember - Chris Brown - Istora Senayan• 17 Januari - Simple Plan - Istora Senayan• 19 Januari - Katy Perry - (arena pertunjukan belum ditentukan)• 31 Januari - Rod Stewart - Mata Elang Stadium Ancol• 3 Maret - Roxette - (arena pertunjukan belum ditentukan)

So, Jakarta, put your hands in the air, and wave 'em like you just don't care!

Put Your Hands in tHe air, Jakarta! The prediction that Jakarta will transform into one of the main centres of music concerts in the world — or in South East Asia, at least — has turned out to become more sooner than later. Without mentioning the previous months or years, in October alone, many top quality artists came and played. Westlife, the boyband who have sold more than 44 million albums throughout their career played in Tennis Indoor Senayan on the 5th. Alice Cooper on the 7th. 50 Cent, one of the world's highest selling rappers, performed on the 8th. If Motley Crue could have made it on the 8th, the reputation of Jakarta will be rocketed even faster among global rock metropolitans.

The festivities don’t not stop there just yet. It continues. It gets bigger. And crazier. Check this list out yourself, November till next year, names of artists who already have confirmed to play.

• November 15 - Children of Bodom - Bulungan Outdoor• November 16 - Kenny G - Balai Sarbini• November 18 - Elton John - Sentul International Convention Centre• December 6 - Pitbull - Tennis Indoor Senayan• December 10 - Richard Marx - Gandaria City• December 10 - Anthrax and Hellyeah - Pantai Karnaval, Ancol• December 13 - Chris Brown - Istora Senayan• January 17 - Simple Plan - Istora Senayan• January 19 - Katy Perry - (venue to be confirmed)• January 31 - Rod Stewart - Mata Elang Stadium, Ancol• March 3 - Roxette - (venue to be confirmed)

What music are you into at the moment?LLW’s (Indra Lesmana, Barry Likumahuwa, Sandy Winarta) ‘Love, Life, Wisdom’ - cool jazz! And Kasabian’s Velociraptor! Still cosmic and psychedelic.

What was the first record you bought? Any interesting story behind it?The Police’s ‘Reggatta de Blanc’ & U2’s ‘War’. Can’t remember which one was bought first, but basically a teenage crush on Sting and Bono, and then to Brit Music.

What are your all-time favourite albums? Why?OMG! I have so many! To name but a few:Fiona Apple’s ‘When the Pawn’ - excellent music & vocals. Dark, vicious, yet deadly romantic and deep. The Dandy Warhols’ ‘Thirteen Tales from Urban Bohemia’ makes me feel Bohemian! The Million Dollar Hotel music from the motion picture featuring U2 and The Million Dollar Hotel Band. Not many people like this album, but I think it’s inventive & gives me that floating, flying feeling. The Beatles’ ‘Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band’. What can I say?And many many more!

What was the worst record you ever purchased?Ummm... none! My collection is pretty cool haha…

Who do you want to be, other than yourself, next time you reincarnate?A better version of me! (By the way, this is one of the titles of a Fiona Apple song).

What book are you reading now and what’s the score (1-10)? Borrow or buy?“The Girl Who Leapt Through Time” by Yasutaka TsuTsui. Can’t rate it yet, not finished.

What new movie should people see? Why?Not many good movies around lately. Maybe ‘PJ 20’ by Cameron Crowe because it’s always nice to watch a journey of a band in a feature documentary like this one of Pearl Jam.

What song do you choose to start your weekend?‘Moondance’ by Van Morrison.

And song you choose to end your weekend?‘Stretch N Pause’ by LLW.

Dominik Moll is a German-born French director who is well-known for his drama-mystery films such as ‘With A Friend Like Harry’ and ‘Lemming’, both of which got nominated in the Cannes Film Festival’s Palme d’Or category. ‘The Monk’ is a Faustian thriller starring Vincent Cassell as a monk named Ambrosio who gets seduced by the devilish Matilda, and has to sell his soul to gain his freedom.

One thing Hollywood horror films can never get right compared to Asian ones is the creepy ghost visualizations that give you goosebumps from start to end. This Korean horror movie might not be recommended the cat lovers out there - they may not be as fluffly and adorable as we thought. Mystic felines, a creepy mystery and scary ghosts all add up to a winner in our book.

This trippy sci-fi film is a creative labor out of famous band Angels & Airwaves’ album “Love”. It tells the story of a depressed astronaut who lost contact with Earth

inside his spaceship and started to discover strange things inside the ship itself. Especially for fans of Angels & Airwaves, you might want to sit through the loneliness and delusions of the outer space in INAFFF11!

“One of the best British thrillers in years” raved Empire magazine - certainly something to recommend this acclaimed dark thriller, praised even at SITGES and the Toronto Film Festival. The story of a seasoned contract killer fighting for conscience between his complicated job and marital/parenthood tensions, it is intriguing, gripping and bone-

chilling all at once. A must-watch on your INAFFF11 list!

C lassical music as we know it exists for various reasons. Back in an era where this music was the only type of music that you heard all around Europe,

people were using it for many purposes. At that time, classical music became a popular medium for all the emotions that one may experience. Sonatas were created by composers when in love, marches for national victories, operas for the ultimate entertainment, and masses for religious reasons.

Though classical music is not just Christian music, the connection between the two is undeniable. For centuries, even until now composers still have their spiritual calling to be religious composers or create liturgical compositions for the Church. One of the famous composers who was known for creating big mass compositions is none other than Joseph Haydn.

Considered to be one of the most prominent composers from the classical period along with Mozart, Haydn is also known as the father of the symphony and the father of the string quartet, for his important contributions to this form. Like other classical composers back then, Haydn was also moved to create some compositions based on biblical events. In his life, he is known to have composed 14 masses and two famous oratorios (‘The Creation’ and ‘The Seasons’).

On the upcoming 5th of November 2011, Jakarta is fortunate enough to be able to hear one of Haydn’s Masses presented by Gloriamus Philharmonia and Greenville Christian Singers at Aula Simfonia. For this special occasion, they have chosen Haydn’s famous ‘Missa in Angustis’ (Mass for Troubled Times) - also know as ‘Nelson’s Mass’. Composed in 1798, Haydn’s world was in turmoil as Napoleon had won four major battles with Austria within less then a year. What Haydn didn’t know when he

wrote the mass is that Napoleon had been recently dealt a stunning defeat in the battle of the Nile by British forces led by Admiral Horatio Nelson. Thus, this mass gradually acquired the nickname ‘Lord Nelson Mass’. The title was further cemented when in 1800, Lord Nelson himself visited the Palais Esterhazy and heard the mass performed. It is one of the six masses written near the end of Haydn’s life that are now seen as a culmination of his liturgical compositions.

There is no doubt that Gloriamus Philharmonia under the direction of Adidharma are the right ensemble to bring Haydn’s music back to life. Founded in January 2003 as Gloriamus Symphony Orchestra, this group has an objective to be the center for young people who want to learn classical music and perform it in international standard concerts. During its development, the name changed into Gloriamus Philharmonia, and they have performed various concerts. Most members of the philharmonia are students and teaching staff of the Gloriamus Music School, but this doesn’t mean they are inexperienced. Far from it - in their almost nine year career, Gloriamus Philharmonia has shown Jakarta’s audience that they have an excellent quality and big range of repertories from Baroque to Romantic era skills.

For this coming performance, Gloriamus Philharmonia will perform together with Greenville Christian Singers conducted by Ndaru Darsono. They will also have four multinational soloists such as Korean soprano Monica Hwang Hwasook, Singaporean mezzo-soprano Anna Koor Chooi Choo, and Indonesian tenor Samuel Tandei as well as Indonesian Bass Ferry Chandra.

If you like classical music, then perhaps this concert is a good occasion to expand your horizons and experience the realm of heavenly music. Who knows, you might end up loving it!

Jackrabbit’s ‘Mad As A Hatter’ Autumn Madness

A couple of interesting new restaurants have opened in the Epicentrum area recently. This spacious zone with its Singapore-like planning is fast becoming the place to be in Jakarta and with the captive market of all those towers full of foreign and local people, is set to be even bigger and better in the near future. These two are just a couple of all the great restaurants and bars opening up there recently.

Otel Lobby is a cool concept with an even cooler delivery. According to chef Maya Aldy, formally from Hu’u Bar Bali and recently Y Grill and Y&Y, the idea is that the single level restaurant is a hotel lobby at the front, with a hotel bar to the left and hotel restaurant to the right. Drop your bags in the lobby and file in for great drinks and excellent comfort food. The prices are also very cool so there’s no reason not to give Otel Lobby a try. Next question is, “Can I book in for the night?”

What’s New in the Hood?

Over the road, and in a world of its own, is the new Bluegrass restaurant and bar. The American-esque styled restaurant is placed in one of the most favourable locations in town, with an enormous parking area and a parkland outlook. The restaurant features an open kitchen and one of the longest bars in Jakarta. The design is all warmth and oozing with class, and on the outside terrace guests can even order the BBQ pack and have it cooked right there in front of them. Bluegrass looks set to be a favorite watering hole in town for many and especially with the owner’s Stark beer on tap.

PARADISEDYNASTY

Page 57: The Beat Jakarta 50

057 beatmag.com

Paradise Dynasty is a Singapore-based eatery opened in Plaza Senayan last June, and already they’re giving other Chinese

restaurant chains a run for their money.

When you walk in, be mesmerized by the majestic décor, with some dramatic modern touches thrown in for good measure. An open kitchen is visible on one side, giving a buzzy, amicable atmosphere.

Before we go any further, please note that many of the dishes here are made of pork. There’s a plethora of Chinese fare on offer, but the real specialty here is the xiao long baos (dumplings). There are eight types of signature Dynasty xiao long baos (78k a set) to choose from, each of them with a different unique flavour and colour. For the best experience for your palate, you’re supposed to eat them in a certain order; from the smoothest flavour to the strongest. Don’t worry, there’s a flyer on your table to guide you. Start with the original flavour (white), then the ginseng (green), foie gras (light brown), black truffle (black), cheesy (yellow), crab roe (orange), garlic (grey), all the way to the Szechuan (red). These traditional dumplings with a twist are certainly pleasing to the eye, and to the tastebuds. The skin has just the right thickness, and the filling inside just oozes flavour.

Other specialty dishes here are the la mian or hand-pulled noodles. The la mian with sliced pork in signature pork bone soup (42k) is just sublime. The key is in the tasty thick broth, which is made by slowly cooking the pork bone for many hours. The thin and silky smooth noodles complemented the soup very well.

However, my own personal favourite is the la mian with poached marbled beef Szechuan style (58k). The broth is full with wonderful herbs and spices, with a good dose of chili pepper for an extra kick. Pure perfection!

Cool yourself down with their delectable desserts like the chilled aloe vera and osmanthus jelly in honey lemon juice (22K) or the chilled mango pudding (22K).

If you’re in a group, Paradise Dynasty also has four scrumptious set menus that’ll whet your appetites. First is the dragon set (128K for 2 pax): crispy spring rolls, Szechuan style poached chicken, ma po tofu, and steamed rice.

The second one is the golden set (178K for 2 pax): la mian with vegetable pork dumpling in signature pork bone soup, sautéed diced chicken with cashew nuts and dried chili, sautéed kai lan with ginger sauce, and pan fried pumpkin pastry.

For bigger groups, go for the legend set (298k for 4 pax): Cold tofu with century egg, sweet and sour chicken, sautéed beef with assorted mushrooms in szechuan bean sauce, sautéed Australian lettuce, pan fried pancake with red bean paste, and steamed rice.

And the last of these fantastic set menus is the dynasty set (318K for 4 pax): La mian with sliced pork in signature pork bone soup, pan fried pork and French bean dumpling, deep fried diced chicken in Szechuan style, braised tofu and sliced pork with mixed mushrooms in spicy sauce, sautéed French bean with minced pork, and glutinous rice ball topped with grated nut. These set menus are valid every Monday to Friday, dine-in only, and Chinese tea is included.

From delicate dumplings to fiery noodles and everything in between, Paradise Dynasty provides a superb dining experience with affordable Chinese cuisine in a mesmerizing setting, set at a prime location. This is one of the hippest Chinese restaurants in town.

The dishes on offer are an international affair, but we were more inclined to sample the Asian section of the menu. To whet our appetite and give us time to sort through the wide selection of dishes for our main course, we ordered an appetizer of boneless chicken thighs Thai style (58K) and prawn spring rolls (60K). The spring rolls were the usual deal but were chock full of shrimp, while the Thai style chicken was the winner on the table with its perfect blend of sweet, sour and spice adding to the tender texture of the chicken.

Finishing off our entrees we decided to move on to the main course, and went Chinese ordering up hipiaw cah (80K) - stir fried fish belly, gurame tahu tausi (80K) - fried gurame fish served with silken tofu and topped with mildly spicy Tausi sauce, plus the highly recommended fried oxtail soup (78K). The oriental flavors of the Tausi sauce with the crispiness of the fish and smoothness of the tofu was a perfect match, which left us wanting more. As for the hipiaw cah, its looks are truly deceiving as it just looks like a pile of fat on a plate but the way the sauce intertwines with the texture of the fish is a mouth watering sensation you must try.

We were quite full after our Chinese dishes, but forced our bellies to sample the fried oxtail soup and it sure wasn’t a letdown as we pretty much finished the whole bowl. The freshness of the broth and tender meat of the oxtail is probably the reason why it is a popular dish here.

Despite gaining a few kilos after our fill of food, we figured we couldn’t review a place properly without trying at least one of its deserts, and we opted for another Asian delicacy - the Thai coconut pudding (58K). Without a doubt, this was the perfect meal ender, made up of a gelatinous pudding filled with young Bangkok coconut served in a coconut shell with a scoop of vanilla and strawberry ice cream. How they got the jelly like pudding to fit in the coconut shell was a wonder to us, but however the chef did it, it only added more flavour to the dish.

Cocktails are also available on the menu at Illigals Resto and one of the signature drinks here is simply dubbed ‘long night’. Concocted from a mix of vodka, whiskey, brandy, tequila, rum, gin, blue curacao, peppermint, dry orange, sambuca, sherry brandy filled up with grenadine syrup to create a sweet mix that kicks like a mule so its best drunk in sips.

After our mini feast we were ready to set the night ablaze at Illigals’ many entertainment venues.

So if you want to enjoy a long weekend without having to go to too many places, just head to Illigals, everything you need to be entertained is under one roof!

tutorial: revlon Custom eYes Palette & masCara

Here’s a quick review of the Revlon Custom Eyes palette, in particular the Sweet Innocence palette where you can create a sultry purple look. The good thing about this palette is that it comes with a chart at the back on how to apply the product - a great deal of help for a beginner.

You get one deep crease colour, one liner colour, two more neutral colours and one highlighter colour. I see that this is the case with other palettes in the Custom Eyes series. The neutral colour might not look too pigmented at first, but

Amalia - editor of www.fashionesedaily.com – Style & Beauty with Attitude

evidently, as you will see below, they are made to complement each of the other colours within the palette to create a beautiful gradation. Follow the simple step by step tutorial and you’ll get a great sultry purple look.

In this tutorial, we use a mix of sponge tip applicators that you’ll get with the palette and brushes. You’ll need an eyeshadow brush, pencil or smaller eyeshadow brush for the outer corner and crease, blending brush and eyeliner brush.

Style

Page 61: The Beat Jakarta 50

Style

061 beatmag.com

1. Apply the white bone coloured eyeshadow all over your lid with dense eyeshadow brush or the sponge tip applicator. Don’t blend it yet, we just want to pile all the colour in the lid.

2. Put the deep purple on the crease. Don’t worry that it looks like a line on your lid. We’re going to work with the blending later.

3. Dust lightly the bone coloured eyeshadow from the crease line up to your browbone. Be a little bit light handed with this one, because we don’t want this part to appear too whiteish.

4. Draw a v-like shape on the outer corner of your eyes with pencil or small eyeshadow brush with the brown eyeshadow.

5. Now it’s time to blend, blend and blend. Use a blending brush and blend the colour together where you will make the separation of colours disappear. There should be no obvious trace of where one colour starts and one disappears.

6. This is roughly what the look should look like after you blend all the colours together. Remember! Be light handed or you’ll make all the colours disappear.

7. Line the half part of your lower lid with the chocolate eyeshadow using the pointy sponge tip applicator.

8. Use the light peach shadow for the inside corner of your eyes, this will brighten your eyes.

9. Here, we use the chocolate eyeshadow as eyeliner. Use an eyeliner brush and damp it a bit before you tap it into your shadow and draw the liner.

To finish off this look simply wiggle the Revlon Custom Eyes mascara from root to end to lengthen and voluminize your lashes. The great thing about this mascara is that it has a very flexible brush. You also get to choose between length & definition or length & drama.

Voila! This is the final look from the Revlon Custom Eyes palette and mascara combination. It’s so easy to do and this purple look can be applied to anyone without having that panda eye look.

How do you usually dress when you’re in love? Do you dress more cheerfully and sweet as your heart flutters with

the sound of your lover’s name? For Eddy Betty, love translates into a collection of colourful and dynamic garments that put batik back in center stage with a new collection titled ‘Love is In The Air’. Everyone who attended the fashion show, held at the Hotel Mulia ballroom clearly enjoyed Eddy Betty’s interpretation of love through the orchestration of daring patterns and bright colours in overlapping compositions.

As you look at the pictures of the fashion show, you’ll find that batik tulis is still the cornerstone of the collection, realised in cotton, rayon and black and white eyelet tenun. Garments made of colourful batik were presented in the first section of the show, which was then continued with a section that explored black and white fabrics.

Edbe’s philosophy is “mix don’t match”, which is clear from the unstructured patterns, unusual combination and details of the clothes. From all the 90 outfits presented at the show, you’ll find many jumpsuits, voluminous dresses or skirts, asymmetrical blouses and also sarouel pants. They are all casual without compromising style.

The Why Factory (T?F) is a global think-tank and research institute, led by Winy Maas/MVRDV at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). The Why Factory explores the possibilities for the future development of our cities, focusing on the production of models and visualizations for cities of the future. At the Erasmus Huis in Jakarta, The Why Factory would like to share 2 of its most exciting projects within the ‘Future Cities series’: Visionary Cities and Green Dream. In Visionary Cities, The Why Factory asks ‘What is an urban vision and why do we need one?’ and invites you to join them as they explore potential solutions for 12 urgencies that are threatening our cities today. Green Dream

approaches a contentious topic of environmental sustainability. It makes a series of alarming and sometimes contradictory observations on today’s state of Green as it plays out in architecture, politics, technology, economics and our personal lives. It explores the topic in an analytical, yet experimental way with the aim to provide a basis for a new argumentation.

Institut Français d’Indonesien (IFI) and Akademi Samali held ‘Histoire de la BandeDessinnée’, an exhibition that showcased comic history in Indonesia.

Since 1931 when the first episodes were put in the newspaper Sin Po, the Indonesian comic has developed and transformed following the artistic trends and political events taking place in its homeland. The Comic Community of Indonesia, in collaboration with the comic artists’ collective of Samali College, has brought together a valuable selection of resources documenting this evolution.

The highlight of the opening party was the appearance of DjairWarni, a living legend that created JakaSembung, an old comic series that features the adventures of a fictional local warrior. He also shared his experience during the New Order era when many of his other comics were banned by the government for being “a potential threat to national security.”

This exhibition’s archival pieces offer an excellent retrospective of the history of the comic in Indonesia. Highly recommended.

a lthough the main event is scheduled for the end of the year, the grand international event of Jakarta Biennale#14.2011 has already been holding parallel programs and

fringe events. With the theme ‘Maximum City: Survive or Escape’,they held ‘Hospital without Wall’ - an exhibition of paintings by schizophrenia patients.

Hospital without Wall itself is the concept of a hospital without walls or boundaries, bearing the plans and procedures of healthcare that involve all parties comprehensively and effectively. It was first established in a community health service centre in Palmares, Alajuela Provence, Costa Rica.

The concept was first designed to change access to hospitals that were once closed to the public to become open for anyone. In the end, the Hospital without Wall concept was adopted by other health centres in Alajuela such as in San Ramon, Alfaro Ruiz, Naranjo, and Valverde Vega. The local government supported it and made it a national movement, creating a knock on impact to the international world.

The concept of Hospital without Wall demands participation from all parties, including the government who has a key role. “The government has started the free from shackles program with 30,000 patients released last year and 20,000 more planned for this year. Yet it has not been so clear as to what activities regarding the movement have so far been made, and the public experiences difficulties in accessing the accuracy and the source of the data mentioned” stated Bagus Utomo, the head of The Indonesian Schizophrenia Awareness Community.

Together with PerhimpunanJiwaSehat (PJS), an association of families whose members have experienced or are experiencing mental problems, they have established Hospital without Wall by setting up support groups for mental patients. To date, they have adopted the concept into an art exhibition sponsored by the Jakarta Biennale#14.2011 committee and the Jakarta Arts Council.

Snapshot Techniques from the Past

Since 1991, British photographer Martin Westlake has traveled throughout Asia on magazine assignments and personal projects. From Beijing’s Forbidden City to the volcanic landscapes of Westlake’s home base of Java, his photographs document people and places in a part of the world that has changed rapidly over the last two decades. Rendered in muted, painterly tones, many of the pictures have a strong hint of nostalgia to them – a yearning for an Asia that is fast disappearing and a longing return to the photographic techniques of the past.Similar to 19th century photographers, Westlake opts to carry an ungainly large format plate camera on most of his journeys. The use of Polaroid films and lith printing darkroom processes recall an earlier era of image making and remind the viewer of the craft and aesthetic of the pioneers of travel photography.

CD review

069 beatmag.com

BjorkBiophilia

Never one to be pidgeonholed, Bjork has gained quite a reputation as an innovator in music, and

this ‘app album’ certainly sticks to that. Said to be partly recorded on an iPad, she combines music, apps, Internet, installations, and live shows into the album. Biophilia doesn’t come as a rush like 2007’s ‘Volta’, but it’s still a provoking experimental piece of electronica with minimal sounds and less loops. ‘Moon’ is a very quiet harmony, merging harps, harmonic singing, and a haunting almost subliminal choir - a beautiful anomalous song. The rest of the album is a similarly electronic adventure that is sure to both challenge and reward in equal measures.

An antidote to the often sterile sunset beats from DJs in Bali, Ron Kingston’s pop tunes come

from ‘Down Under’ with plenty of soul and Aussie optimism. It’s like listening to a white Babyface, and the tunes roll out the speakers effortlessly. ‘All You Need To Know’ on the whole is a simple and catchy affair, nicely exemplified by the upbeat ‘Make it Up To You’. A duet with Indonesian singer Mia called ‘My Friend’ reminds me of the old animation movie soundtracks of the 90’s. Perfectly polished soulful pop that will go down a treat on an easy Sunday morning.

Armed only with a text message giving no more than the vaguest instruction as to where the new Pavone restaurant is

(“somewhere in Padma, mate”), I’m expecting a lengthy mission around the back streets before actually finding the place. I needn’t have worried though - the striking white premises complete with buzzing neon pink sign that looks like something straight out of Miami Vice is not easy to miss amongst the throng of sports bars and DVD shops along Padma’s main strip.

Helpfully, a large parking area out back negates the ordeal of having to wedge the bike somewhere along the main road, and it’s not long before I’m sipping on a cool iced tea and perusing the rather swanky looking silver bound menu. It doesn’t just look pretty either, with a fully stacked lineup of breakfast options, lunch specials, appetisers, mains, tapas and desserts there’s something for everyone - from Mediterranean delights to Asian fare.

Enjoying the rare occasion of dining alone, I order up a tuna salad (45k++) and whip out the laptop to take advantage of the free WiFi Internet connection - perfect for a working lunch or an alternative to a sweaty ‘net cafe. The breezy interior is all palms and more neon lights that certainly has a style all of its own, with a buzzy feel and good vantage points for people watching. The salad promptly arrives and I duly set about demolishing the super tender sashimi quality chunks of tuna fillet and tangy salad leaves peppered with quail eggs and capers.

For the main, I’m torn between the Australian tenderloin with herb butter (150k++) and the seafood pasta (70k++), eventually deciding to go with the surf option, which is a delicious medley of creamy pasta with fat calamari chunks and tender prawns scattered throughout. I panic momentarily as a plate of incredibly tender looking red meat whizzes past my nose en route to another table, but the spotlessly empty plate in front of me reassures that I made the right choice.

To keep the old sweet tooth happy I opt for a creme caramel (25k++) for dessert - a huge portion it turns out, that is easily enough to share. As much as I’d love to stick around for the live piano performance (every night from 7pm onwards) it’s time to get a move on and I bid the friendly staff farewell, vowing to return again soon.

Despite only having been open for a month, Pavone looks well established and is sure to do a roaring trade around these parts, so next time you’re in Padma keep an eye out for the neon sign and enjoy a great dining experience at any time of the day.

Zouk Comes to Bali

Hu’u has always presented fantastic international club nights to Bali, and this time once again it was the turn of Singapore’s Zouk. To

complete the picture, Zouk Singapore resident DJ Ghetto was drafted in to command the decks with a hot compilation of hip hop, RnB and electro tunes that he regularly spins back at home base. It was the rockin’ first night of two that kept the hu’u weekend fired up on all cylinders.

Devine DJ Duo

Party heads were treated to a special performance at Deejay club as 1945MF master DJ Iman brought along FDJ Chantal to

rock the late night crowd. Hitting the DJ booth a few hours before sunrise, the duo went back-to-back supplying a high energy mix of dance tracks that had everyone dancing ‘til dawn.

A Night to Remember

Sapphire Blue club at The Stones Entertainment Center was moved into

raging mode as the crowds converged to dance to the tunes of renowned DJ Riri Mestica for an event titled ‘A Night to Remember’. Not only featuring the big name DJ, the pumped up crowd was also entertained by the resident DJs, sexy dancers and a very alluring fashion show.

Splash Finale

The final Splash of 2011 at Cocoon Beach Club last Sunday kicked off from 1pm and went till late, with DJ Fadi and Nina from Sweden on

the decks supplying the pool side vibes, and performances from girls in Hawaiian costumes dancing around hula-ing up a storm were an added twist. No doubt the Sunday pool bashes will be back in the future.

Traditional Entertainment

To entertain the many diners at Seminyak Square’s food corner, traditional Balinese dancing and a whole lot more were presented for an altogether

more cultured affair. From the traditional Balinese pendet or welcome dance to the fast paced kutilang dance that started the night’s entertainment, dancers took their place in the spotlight and invited guests to join in for a impromptu lesson in traditional dance. A fiery ending to the performance saw fire dancers heat up the night to the awe and applause of the crowd.
