TIDAL INTERRUPTIONS The editor of the Bear River Tides is taking a very well deserved break from duties for a month and regrets that there will be no March Bear River Tides published this year.

BOARD OF TRADE NEWS. Is anyone surprised that nothing has been done once again by the Board of trade? Got ideas? Want to

help? Contact Larry Knox, president, Duff Wilson, vice-president, Rick Jacques, secretary, Chris Tibbs, treasurer, or directors: Jon Welch, Rob Buckland-Nicks, Noreen Miller, Kelly Foxton, Don Rice, Dan Lagan. They are sadly absent from the winter carnival schedule. There may or may not be an annual general meeting, keep your eyes peeled for notices. Remember, if you are not already a member, you can't vote. if you would like to ask questions, they must be submitted in writing in advance of the meeting.

THE STORY OF THE SS BEAR RIVER, continued from last month... The story is told that the new steamer ar-rived in Bear River on Sunday after-noon. Sunday school was in session, but when the sound of the ships whistle an-nounced her arrival, one teacher found him-self without his class. The boys dashed from the classroom and down the hill to see this new steam propelled means of transporta-tion ease into her berth. Capt. Woodworth's head protruded from the pilothouse window as he proudly sang out his docking instructions. The late Guy Morehouse who was later to become one of the most outstanding mail carriers of the Province, was in the engine room. We can imagine the excitement which greeted the arrival of the S.S. Bear River. It was assured that a weekly trip would be made to St. John and it would e possible for passengers to board the steamer and sail directly and with com-parative safety, and dispatch to the city. For fourteen years a weekly passenger service was carried on between St. John and Bear River by the sturdy little steam coaster. In addition to her ferry service, the S.S. Bear River was employed towing two and three masters through the two draw-bridges on their trips to and from the Vil-lage. During this period the schooner loaded their cargoes from the wharves at Bear River. But the disuse of sailing ships and the em-ployment of trucks have brought about the abandonment of the port as a sea outlet for lumber. The last ship consigned to Bear River ran foul of one of the bridges causing considerable damage to the structure. ...to be continued in the next issue.
