The Bear River Tides A Monthly Presentation published by THINK FOR YOURSELF PUBLISHING – news, events and social notes for the community READ THE TIDES ON LINE AT www.thebearrivertides.com Volume II Issue 7 July 2011 BEAR RIVER FIRE DEPARTMENT During the month of June your Bear River Volunteer Fire Department responded to one vehicle fire & one power pole fire. 1 Be prepared for a fire - Know exactly what to do and where to go if there is a fire. 2 Smoke Alarms protect everyone – Have a smoke alarm installed on every level of your home, especially near sleeping area. Check alarm bat- teries once a month. 3 If you smoke – use large, deep ashtrays, always make sure cigarettes are out. Never smoke when you are lying down or in bed. 4 Don’t reach for danger – Wear tight fitting or roll up sleeves when cooking. If pot catches fire, cover it with lid & turn off burner. Never leave cooking unattended. 5 If your clothing catches fire – Lower yourself to the ground, cover your face with hands & roll over & over to put out flames. If you can’t do this, grab a towel or blanket and smother the flames. 6 Crawl low under smoke – most victims die from smoke, not flames. Smoke rises, so you must get on the floor where the air is cleaner. Crawl on your hands & knees to safety. 7 Give space heaters space – Keep them at least 1 metre (3 feet) away from anything, including you. A slight brush against a heater could set your clothing on fire. 8 Need assistance? Ask family or friends to test your smoke alarms if you are not able. Prepare a fire safety plan. If you have any questions about fire prevention & fire safety please contact your fire department who will be pleased to assist you. Duff Wilson is now in charge of the greenspace and waterfront committee of the Board of Trade,with help from Jon Welch and Rick Jacques. Our favourite was Georgia Trimper's rendition of Bear River. Everyone was great! Well done kids! MILL REMEMBRANCE DAY It's a big day down at the B.R. Millyard Recrea- tion, Sat., Aug. 6. In addition to the public market (10-3) visitors can enjoy photo displays of the three Clarke marsh sawmills, and several other mills of the area. At 11, a presentation of the list of known past mill associates will be made...if your ancestor was an owner, manager or worker in a mill, make sure their name is included. Enjoy real smoked southern bbq with Smokin' with Jeff. Also during the day there will be mill stories, and a tree identification contest. More than $500 value in prizes will be awarded. To top off the day a campfire will begin at 8 pm. For more info call 467-3648. This is an event that no one who is inter- ested in the history of Bear River will want to miss! BEAR RIVER FIRE DEPARTMENT

During the month of June your Bear River Volunteer Fire Department responded to one vehicle fire & one power pole fire. 1 Be prepared for a fire - Know exactly what to do

A new, Friday, door to door transportation service for Bear River (Digby County side) is now underway. Provided by the Transport de Clare Society, you get round trip service for only $10.00, leaving Bear River at 9 am for Digby and returning to Bear River at 1 pm. home of Glendean Parker in July. Aside from a great selection of goodies, the guests were en-tertained with music by Bob Snider, George Sloan, Carol White, and Greg MacEwan.

Speaking of barbeques, the seventh annual pig roast was held at the home of Carolyn and Robert Wagner. Once again, the weather was perfect and the pork sublime! Everyone went home with a big smile on their face, especially the pie winners.

Bob and Gertrude Benson entertained friends from Germany.

Darla Anderson enjoyed the company of a friend from Minnesota for two weeks in July, taking the opportunity to show her around the province and do some not-so- rough camping on the Atlantic shore.

Cecil Hooper hosted a barbeque at his home recently and everyone wished a Happy birthday to Sue Long. One of the guests was Donnie Walsh of Canada`s own,''Downchild Blues Band'', who was visiting Glynis Jones & Russell Quinn for a few days.

Of course, Mary and Drowsy Goodale did not miss their annual visit to Bear River for the Cherry Carnival. Always good to see them in town, even for a short visit.

Another arts-girls art weekend has come and gone, with Sharon Trueman, Cathy Peck, Sandy Leonard, Anne Zimmerman, Joey Thorpe and Joyce Peck all having a great time, making art and relaxing at their favourite Risser's Beach camp-spot.

Glynis Jones and Russell Quinn entertained guests from Ontario for a few days.

Jane Hammill went off to Saskatchewan for a week's visit with a friend.

Also off to Saskatchewan in late July are Linda Mae Findlay and Jane Kingston, who are driving to Ontario together before heading off separately to visit with family and friends. They'll meet up again in Ontario for the return drive home at the end of August.

Joan Smith has been staying in Halifax with her daughter and visiting with her new grand-baby.

Welcome back to Joe Zawko who has arrived back in town after being away for too long.

Pat Gamborg traveled to BC to visit with her daughter, son-in law and three grandchildren.

Francois Bellefontaine traveled around the prov-ince visiting with friends in mid-July. Both he and Susan Friend have been very busy landscaping their front yards.

Teresa, Tony and Matthew Dawson are having a great time with the visit of Teresa's parents from England.

It was great to see Arthur and Megan Isles enjoy-ing dinner with daughter Pam at the Changing Tides Diner recently. Arthur says he's "doing really well for a 91 year-old". It seemed that most of the Isles family was here visiting for the birthday event, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Dolores and Victor Spiteri enjoyed a visit to On-tario for a couple of weeks.

Gary and Susan Wambolt vacationed in Labrador

where they visited their son, Matthew and his wife, Meagan.

Carol Jefferson was home for a while from her job in Kandahar, where she will be working until it shuts down in November.

Susan Friend and George Sloane held a delightful pot luck party for all of their Bear River friends to mark their first anniversary of arriving in the village. They seem to have settled in quite nicely and everyone had a great time helping them celebrate!

Welcome to the village to Catherine Somers, Matthew Somers Evan Somers and Gerald Weinstein who are moving from Saskatchewan to the house on Pleasant St. most recently owned by Mike Corbett. Lucky for us, Mike continues to live on Pleasant St, just next door.

Bev Parker and Sharon Riley are happy to have the company of their sister Donna and her hus-band Bud, who are visiting from Ontario. there is a full scale reunion of the Bates family planned for the Digby Scallop weekend, at the Mountain Gap Inn.

And last but not least: welcome to the village Dan Lagan, Margaret Thompson and Angus Lagan-Thomson, who have moved here from Hamilton, Ontario. They are now residing in the former home of Evelyn Henshaw on Peck's Loop.

CONGRATULATIONS TO: Congratulations to Chris Eveleigh and Jen Fitzger-

ald who tied the knot on July 23, with a big party including lots of friends and relatives from away.

Also to Annapolis Highland Winery with a silver and bronze win at the Canadian Wine competition.

Burrell, on their 20th anniversary, August 10, … and to Leslie and Lynn Milbury who celebrate
