Fiddes the Poppy Appeal Organiser/Standard Bearer

for Timsbury, Camerton and Tunley thanked all the

individual volunteers and representatives from the

Parish Council, Timsbury School, Surgery, Cheshire

Home, Co-op, McColls and Our Plaice Chip Shop who

attended for making it a memorable evening. Timsbury

Royal British Legion thoroughly appreciate all the

hardwork and dedication given by the individual

volunteers and businesses in the village for their

support every year. Without you we would not be able

to raise the amazing amount of money we do every

year which was £3,866.43 in our area and a Somerset

total of £889,848.65, helping to make a Nationwide

total of over £44 million for 2016.

THIS YEARS COLLECTING PERIOD IS FROM SATURDAY 28TH

OCTOBER - SATURDAY 11TH NOVEMBER

Camerton will be holding their annual Remembrance

Service starting in the Church at 1050hrs and then at the

Memorial next to Church on Sunday the 12th November

BROADBAND IS COMING TO DUNKERTON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Last month a local business called Truespeed,

which supplies broadband to Priston, said that they would be prepared to install broadband connections to households in Dunkerton if we managed, along with Nailwell and Inglesbatch, to get 32 households to sign up for their service. Truespeed have just confirmed that we have exceeded the 32 target and as result, subject to confirmation at a meeting to be held by their Board of Directors later this month, Truespeed will send out their engineers to the households who have signed up in order to assess the logistics of installation for each household with a view to carrying out the installation sometime over the next few months. The exact timing is uncertain, but I will try and keep everyone informed of progress. For those of you who did not manage to attend the meetings with Truespeed, set out below are a few notes from the meeting:

Truespeed require 32 out of 106 properties in the 3 villages (30%) to sign their form for them to commit to start work

The installation takes the form of fibre optic cables run to each individual property carried through existing service routes using overhead cables and underground telecom ducts ie no digging up roads and vastly better speeds than BT who just put a box in the village and then use household copper wires for the final link

Truespeed currently have 500 subscribers in 6 villages and are rolling out to another 2 villages – they have had excellent feedback on their service

Truespeed are funded by and backed by Aviva i.e. they are well funded and a serious business

The servers are based in Newton St Loe and a new service office is opening in Keynsham ie they are a local business not a remote conglomerate

Recent surveys found that households with ultrafast broadband were worth up to 10% more than the equivalent without ultrafast broadband

The terms are on Truespeed’s website, but points to note are:

The installation cost is around £120 per household ie no massive fundraising required

Free installation to Dunkerton Parish Hall

The monthly cost is £47.50 per month for 18 months inclusive of VAT and line rental

They provide phone services so householders can stop all BT payments

There are options for more than 1 line for those who wish to work from home

The speed is 100mb/s via optic fibre cables direct to the household so no shared lines and extremely quick

There is unlimited data usage

At the end of the 18 month contract a household can revert to another provider

There were a host of questions raised at the meeting covering far more than the main points I have outlined here all of which were answered by the Truespeed presenter. For those of you interested in signing up please contact Truespeed directly. Their details are on their website. If you have already signed up and

would like to join an email group run by Simon Gibbs to keep you informed of dealings with Truespeed then please send an email to Simon Gibbs at [email protected] and he will create a "Dunkerton Broadband Group” email chain.

CHANGING TIMES

As many of you will know, Rev. Gordon Ripley

retires on 31st October, and he and Sylvia will

move to their new home in Gloucester. Dunkerton

and Camerton will be without their own Priest for

a few months while a new one is appointed, a

period known as an interregnum, and we are very

grateful to the team of visiting Priests and talented

Parishioners who will lead our services in the

meantime.

This is an important time for the parish, in which

we hope to shape our future, and your input is vital

to that task. Whether or not you are a regular

churchgoer, please give us your support and help

to keep the church going during this period in

whatever way you can. We will be making our

case very strongly for a new priest who can

provide the right combination of skills and

personal attributes to serve our community,

remembering that this includes young children

(fast growing up!), retired adults and all ages in

between.

Delivered with this edition of The Batch is our

annual Gift Day Appeal. Our regular income is

sadly lacking at the moment and will not look good

to prospective candidates. Anything you can

contribute, whether a one-off donation, however

small, or a monthly contribution, will be very

much appreciated, and the ability to demonstrate

support from across the parish will help to attract

the right person.

Finances aside, the church is very much alive and

well. If you haven’t been to church for a while,

now is a good time to come and see what is going

on - it may be different from the last time you

came!

festivities but everyone present had a thoroughly enjoyable evening. Our President Sue opened the meeting by welcoming a prospective new member, Kate and a newly signed up member, Pauline. It's so heartening to see our group growing year on year. There was no Treasurer’s report as Jan is preparing the year’s accounts in readiness for the AGM in November. Nora spoke on behalf of the six members who attended the group meeting at Farrington Gurney, hosted by High Littleton and Hallatrow. We had a very enjoyable and entertaining evening with a delicious meal and a very informative talk by Ed Drewitt on Whales and Dolphins. Judy attended the Federation AGM in Filton where she delivered a cheque for £35 for the Coins of Friendship collection. We took a brief look at forthcoming events including an invitation to Radstock’s WI Christmas Carol Service at 7.30 on Tuesday, December 8th at Trinity Methodist Church. We also discussed the forthcoming AGM and possible changes in the new year. Frances has asked for anyone wishing to join us on the trip to Denman in March to bring the first payment of £30 to the November meeting. The cost of the coach will be confirmed when we have final numbers. Viv thanked everyone who attended her Macmillan Coffee Morning and made it such a roaring success. We’re entering a team into the Federation quiz on Friday 13th October. Following two unavoidable dropouts, Doris and Judy volunteered to make up the numbers with Di and Liz. We look forward to hearing about their success at the next meeting. Before we settled down to our delicious Harvest Supper, provided by the Committee, we said a very fond farewell to Sylvia. She will be leaving at the end of the month to move to pastures new with her husband Gordon, we wish them every happiness in their new home. From Judy Chidlaw (Secretary)

DUNKERTON QUIZ – Sept 2017

The 10th Dunkerton Quiz saw a record 56 quizzers

in 10 teams scratching their heads on Saturday

30th September in the face of Michael de Grey’s

questions. Subject matter included History, Sport,

Britain in Pictures, Arts and General Knowledge,

Spelling (a gambling round in which teams lost all

their points if they got one wrong, resulting in all

teams being defeated by the word ‘minuscule’ and

0 points being awarded!) and a map of the Middle

East, in which Ben Harris led his team to victory

by placing all 40 countries and seas in the correct

places. Supper of chilli con carne, baked potatoes

and salad followed by a wonderful array of

puddings kindly provided by the quizzers,

accompanied by wine, beer or soft drinks, and a

well supported draw, made for a very enjoyable

evening all round. The resulting, record profit was

£1,006, to be shared between Parish Hall and

church funds.

THIER DOGS. The Management Committee are sure you will all

aware by now the way we dispose of household

rubbish is changing dramatically due to a BANES

initiative which will be implemented on Monday

6th November 2017. This has meant that Tunley

Recreation Centre will be categorised as a

commercial waste producer and will therefore

need to pay for all future mixed and recycled

waste collections.

Having contacted several commercial waste collectors,

including BANES, it has been confirmed that we are

unable to dispose of dog faeces on a commercial

bases. To this end a decision has been made by the

management committee that all of the dog waste bins

currently located within the TRC grounds will be

removed forthwith, the bins will be replaced with signs

as below so - From this point, all dog owners

Crime Prevention Advice

Fraudulent car insurance - Peasedown St John

It has come to recent Police attention that a family in Peasedown St John received some car insurance policy documents for a vehicle they don't own and also for a person that does not live at their address. On receiving these documents they contacted the Police and handed over the documents and also reported the incident to Privilege Car Insurance who had sent the documents to their address. The Police completed some initial enquiries and established the intended insured vehicle was actually registered to an address in Birmingham, further enquiries were conducted with Privilege Car Insurance who stated " this has been a problem for sometime, people are giving low risk postcode areas as their home address even though they don't live there. These people are doing this to insure their vehicles' for a substantially lower price in order to defraud the insurance company and in the long run this could cost honest people more money for their premiums".

‘Sun Chemical: opposite the childrens

playground/bowling club. This is a single track

road - go along, road curves to the right, and just

past the bend is the entrance to SWALLOW (sign

on noticeboard at entrance). Go through the

gateway and the meeting room is straight ahead on

the far left. Plenty of parking.

Bristol Lions Cricket Club After the sad demise of Dunkerton Cricket Club I made personal efforts to contact potential cricketers in the

Cam Valley who would be interested in playing at Dunkerton. There were a number of positive responses,

including from young players, but insufficient to resurrect a viable club.

It is excellent that Bristol Lions will now be based here. The enthusiastic way they are tackling improvements and repairs to the ground is evidence of their

commitment to be ready for next season. In time they hope to be able to run a second team and

have told me that to do so they want to encourage and help coach young players. Until they become established I am happy to collect the names of anyone,

adult or junior, who would be interested in playing or simply attending net practice next season - [email protected] or 07831 370353.
