DUNKERTON QUIZ
Saturday 24 September
The very popular annual quiz night (quizmaster Michael de Grey) will take place on
Saturday 24 September in Dunkerton Parish Hall at 6.30pm.
As usual, there will be a cash bar, a raffle and a hot supper at half time. This is a great fundraiser for the Hall and the Church and it is most successful when people invite
friends from outside the parish to make up a team.
Teams can be 4, 5 or 6 people - 6 is the best number. If you can’t get a team together yourself,
do please register and we will team you up with others.
Tickets (including supper) are £10 per head. You must register yourself or your team in advance ( you are advised to book early, there is a limit to the number of teams we can accommodate in
the Hall).

THE MANDERS ORCHARD GROUP from Denis McCann The Manders Orchard Group would like to thank the Manders family and everyone who took the time to attend the mid-year pruning session on 23rd July. It was really great to see everyone there, and to see how everyone’s efforts made a huge difference to the Manders Orchard, helping to turn a community resource into a community collaboration and social event. Eighteen people of all ages there on the day, everyone playing their own important part, from advice and support, to hard graft, and some nifty acrobatics on the ladders, even the youngest chipped in raking grass and I also want to recognise that others have also done their part before and after the day too – especially Cllr Nick Patch for the mowing. A special thank you to Max Crofts who has had a great success pulling the day together, and I have to say had the great idea to add a BBQ and picnic into the day!
We have already started planning another day later in the autumn, and we will circulate details in the hope that we will see you there. If you would like to help - everyone welcome, especially those with green fingers - just call, text
or email [email protected] 07831 37035307831 370353. The Manders Orchard Group

From The Rectory
It seems incredible to us today that the Church of England did not have its own hymnbook until 1861 when Hymns Ancient and Modern was published. Indeed, hymn singing was not even an integral part of worship in the Church of England until the early nineteenth century, it was actually frowned on.
However, by 1830 regular singing of hymns in the dissenting churches (outside the Church of England) had become widely accepted due to
ISSUE 88

hymn writers like Isaac Watts and Charles Wesley
A further impetus to hymn singing in the Anglican Church came in the 1830s from the Oxford Movement. Being an ecclesiastical reform movement within the Anglican Church, the Oxford Movement wanted to recover the lost treasures of the ancient Greek and Latin churches and as a result Greek, Latin and even German hymns, in translation, were included in ‘Ancient and Modern’ this is, of course where the ‘Ancient’ comes from.
One of the editors of ‘Ancient and Modern’ and chief translators of these ancient hymns was John Mason Neale the 150th anniversary of whose death we will commemorate on the 7th August.
Neale was prolific writer – nearly one tenth of the hymns in the 1951 edition of Hymns Ancient and Modern are his, as either writer or translator.
John Mason Neale was born in London in 1818, educated at Sherborne School in Dorset and Trinity College, Cambridge, and was ordained in 1841.
Neale suffered from chronic ill health throughout his life, and a breakdown in health occurring in the short time between presentation and institution to the parish of Crawley resulted in three years’ recuperation in Madeira.
Physically unable to cope with the rigours of parish ministry, Neale became instead the warden of an almshouse, Sackville College at East Grinstead, in 1846, a position he held for the rest of his life. His studies of the practices of the Early Church gave him a particular interest in the Eastern Orthodox tradition in which many ancient practices had been preserved.
Neale began the study of Eastern Orthodoxy which had previously been ignored by Anglicans. At a time when the study and imitation of continental Catholicism was fashionable among Anglo-Catholics, Neale provided an important balance by pointing towards the Church’s largely forgotten Eastern heritage.
To Neale belongs the great credit for reminding Anglicans that the Church’s catholicity has an Eastern as well as a Roman dimension. His work of hymn translation reflected the worship and liturgical practice of the Early Church.
Nowadays, many Anglicans only recognise the name of J. M. Neale from the small print in the hymn book, Neale was the author of a number of well known and loved hymns: All glory laud and honour; Jerusalem the golden; O happy band of pilgrims; the Day of Resurrection; O come, O come Emmanuel; and Christ is made the sure foundation are among his best known. We owe him a great debt as we worship.
He died in 1866 at the age of 48.
Your friend, in Christ,
Gordon

'Sacristan', All Saints, Dunkerton
We have a vacancy coming up for this
role in the community based at All
Saints Church in Dunkerton. It is
currently filled by me, but I am moving house so will no longer be able to fulfil
these roles in the near future. The
sacristan in our church sets up the
church for services, clears away
afterwards, makes sure things are
secured and clean and notifies the
Churchwardens of any obvious
problems: light bulbs, church mice,
mislaid items, checking wine stocks and
so forth. Occasionally, if available, you
may be asked to show visitors, usually
Americans, around the church or
churchyard.
It is not very onerous and mostly can be
done on an end-of-week day, not just Sunday. It is a suitable job for a
member of the congregation or
someone who is not an attendee at
church as it does not require you to be
present for services.
If you would be willing to support your
local Church, whatever your religious
affiliation, then please contact me to be
given a tour to see if you would be
willing to take on this role or share it
with others.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH
from Richard Hopkins
ONLINE SCAM ALERT
A scam highlighted by the national fraud and
cyber-crime reporting centre Action Fraud in May
2016 is affecting people in the Bath and North East
Somerset area.
Recently, the Police had two reports from elderly
residents. They had both been distressed by calls
from people claiming to be from Her Majesty’s
Revenue and Customs (HMRC) in which they
were told they could go to prison if they did not
immediately pay an outstanding tax debt.
ISSUE 88
6
Thankfully, neither of the pensioners, from
Midsomer Norton and Bath, handed over any
money.
Action Fraud issued a warning about the scam, in
which people are sometimes told to pay their tax
with iTunes vouchers, in May 2016.
Neighbourhood Inspector Adrian Fallows said:
“HMRC will never ask for payment in vouchers. If
you get this sort of unexpected call end it
immediately. If you are concerned about your tax
status, contact HMRC directly using details from
http://www.gov.uk, the phone book, or HMRC
correspondence you know to be genuine.
“Never phone an unexpected caller back on the
number displayed when they call, or any number
they give you. Always check the correct number
for the organisation they claim to be from through
an accredited source like the phone book.”
If you believe you have been contacted by a
fraudster, report it and receive a police crime
reference number by calling Action Fraud on 0300
123 2040 or using their our online fraud reporting
tool http://www.actionfraud.police.uk/report_fraud

WI Report from Judy Chidlaw Dunkerton W.I. celebrated the July meeting in style as it was their 80th birthday party! By invitation some members from Peasedown, Radstock, Timsbury, Marksbury and Temple Cloud joined us together with the Federation Chairman, Donna Butcher and a member of the Board, Veronica Packham. The meeting commenced with musical entertainment by Black Sheep Harmony. A choir of ladies from Bristol and conducted by David Proud. They sang a medley of popular songs, and with their truly melodious and clever harmonies, gave the evening a happy start while members sipped their drinks sat at tables ,decorated with flower arrangements made by Valerie and surrounded with bunting around the hall, provided by Jan and Frances. On their departure, everyone settled down to listen to Judy read the inaugural report of the first monthly meeting of Dunkerton W.I. held on the 23rd July in Dunkerton Church schoolroom. Quoting from that report "Twenty two ladies were present and eight would-be members sent apologies. Two ladies were definitely against, but the rest were anxious to have a W.I. as there was nothing of common interest in the village". Mrs Holland was voted in as President and Miss Gwilliam as vice-president. Ten members were voted on to a committee by secret ballot, and Dunkerton W.I. was up and running. President, Sue Snook, read her Potted History, in which she had gleaned many an interesting and amusing anecdotes. Prize home-grown potatoes in October 1936 were donated to Bath ENT hospital, Knitting for the Forces, jam making, onion and tomato growing for the war effort, and an appeal for slippers to be made from old felt hats! Out tablecloth, which is used at every monthly

meeting, was made in 1956 by Mrs Mary Lewis from Tunley, helped by other members. In 1964 the monthly raffle prize was a pair of nylons! In the 70s there were jumble sales and regular craft entries to the Bath and West Show W>I> Exhibition. The history was brought up to 2006,so there were many more tales to numerous to mention. Sue's last written entry was Long live Dunkerton W.I. Jam and Jerusalem". A sumptuous cold buffet then followed, with several delicious homemade puddings. Marilyn, Nora and Audrey then cut the birthday cake, made by Sue Snook, as they were the longest serving members. As guests lingered chatting and subsequently departing, members kindly washed up and cleared away tables and chairs. No mean feat at 10.15 p.m. It had been a long day but very worthwhile one. Happy Birthday Dunkerton W.I.!

parish council is sad to lose this local well regarded business it fully supports the development of the site as it conforms with the relevant planning policies in the core strategy especially as no suitable buyer could be found for this site to continue in a similar commercial use. The parish council particular welcomes the nature of this development comprising three smaller properties rather than one large one. Planning Application 16/03313/FUL Parcel 2400 Fosseway Englishcombe Construction of cattle handling facilities and hard standing. The parish council unanimously opposed this application on highway safety concerns. HIGHWAYS, RIGHTS OF WAY AND ALLIED MATTERS
Update Highway Related Matters Signage The speed limit sign on Church Lane when entering Dunkerton from the A367 to be reinstated. The Hollow The drains are blocked and potholes on the Hollow. Both to be reported again by Cllr Patch to B&NES highways department. Update Rights of Way Matters The B&NES Highways Department has been requested to deal with the overgrown footpath on the A367 between the lay-by at the bottom of Dunkerton Hill on the left and the top of the hill approaching Peasedown, and also the overgrown hedge which is obstructing the view of traffic coming up Dunkerton Hill at the turn off to the B3115 on the bend. Parish Council Owned Street Lighting As the new energy efficient lights give out less light than the existing orange sodium ones it was decided in consultation with parishioners at the meeting to leave the Brooklands light in Dunkerton as is. It was agreed that the parish council would try and get B&NES to adopt the three parish council owned street lights at Brooklands, the Swan Bus Shelter Dunkerton and Hillgrove Cottages Stoneage Lane. Review of A367 including pedestrian safety in Dunkerton It was agreed that Cllrs would review the varying speed limits along the A367 from the Odd Down P&R to the PSJ roundabout and prepare a
submission to B&NES Highways in order to attempt to get a 30 mph limit in Dunkerton. Future Use of Cricket Field and Pavilion. The parish council unanimously agreed that the chair should continue negotiations with the Bath Exiles cricket club over them using the cricket ground and pavilion. It was agreed that the clerk would write to the proposers of the wildlife option stating that the parish council would still like to see their proposals but advise them of the talks with the cricket club and that the parish council would not pursue the Home Education Centre option. Dunkerton Green Consultation Responses The council noted the results of the consultation and expressed thanks to the Manders Orchard Group for their initial proposal and for conducting the consultation. Steve Murphy has been doing a splendid job maintaining The Green on behalf of the community and has kindly agreed to continue to do so. In view of the workload involved for the Manders Orchard Group with getting the orchard back into use, it was thought best if the group concentrated solely on the orchard in future. The clerk to write to the group accordingly. Meeting closed 9.20 pm. Next scheduled meetings 22 September Tunley Recreation Centre 7.30 pm and 27 October Dunkerton Parish Hall 7.30 pm.

YOUR LOCAL MUSEUM
As you go into Radstock down the A367 Bath New Road all of you must have noticed Radstock Museum, which is housed in the old Market Hall with its picturesque clock tower. It tells the story of the north Somerset coalfields, their infrastructure and communities. It has a wealth of displays full of artefacts, ranging from a typical miner’s cottage, complete with privy, a printing press, a Victorian schoolroom, a coalface and much more. There is plenty on offer to appeal to children of all ages, with quizzes always available and some special trails during the longer holidays. But not only does the Museum have its permanent displays it also has temporary exhibitions of local interest that usually last about 2 – 3 months. These are well publicised locally and on our website. Behind the scenes the Museum has a large collection of archive material and an extensive

reference library, so you can research about a relative or about what Dunkerton looked like many years ago. We publish a journal, called 5 Arches, 3 times a year, full of articles of local interest, some of which over the years have covered Dunkerton. Back copies are available in the shop. We also have regular evening talks over the winter months, one series entitled Science in Radstock brings in speakers who cover a huge range of subjects ranging from nuclear submarines to neuroscience. The other series, Bygone Days, is all about local history, for instance the Dunkerton riots. If you are at a loss for Christmas presents, and you can never start too early, then visit the Museum shop, which has a vast range of books about this area, catering for all interests. And while you are there have a cup of tea and a slice of cake in the tea room. For all the information you need about the Museum go to the website www.radstockmuseum.co.uk You can also sign up for our free monthly newsletter using the Subscribe button on the website front page. Or you can view us on Facebook. The Museum is run by a great team of dedicated volunteers who enjoy what they do, meet lots of other people, learn new skills and also gain knowledge of local history. If you think you would like to join the team then get in touch, all the details of the varied roles and how to join us are on the website. So when you are at a loss on a rainy afternoon or are looking after the grandchildren, drop in to see Radstock Museum. Your visit will help to keep the Museum running as we receive no funding from national or local government and rely almost totally on income from visitors. And remember that an entry ticket is valid for a year so you can go as often as you like.
